Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the $4$-dimensional $SU(N)$ $2$-index chiral gauge theories and investigate their faithful global symmetries and dynamics. These are a finite set of theories with fermions in the $2$-index symmetric and anti-symmetric representations, with no fundamentals, and they do not admit a large-$N$ limit. We employ a combination of perturbative and nonperturbative methods, enabling us to constrain their infrared (IR) phases. Specifically, we leverage the 't Hooft anomalies associated with continuous and discrete groups to eliminate a few scenarios. In some cases, the anomalies rule out the possibility of fermion composites. In other cases, the interplay between the continuous and discrete anomalies leads to multiple higher-order condensates, which inevitably form to match the anomalies. Further, we pinpoint the most probable symmetry-breaking patterns by searching for condensates that match the full set of anomalies resulting in the smallest number of IR degrees of freedom. Higher-loop $\beta$-function analysis suggests that a few theories may flow to a conformal fixed point.

Six-Dimensional Gauge Theory on the Chiral Square

Abstract:We construct gauge theories in two extra dimensions compactified on the chiral square, which is a simple compactification that leads to chiral fermions in four dimensions. Stationarity of the action on the boundary specifies the boundary conditions for gauge fields. Any six-dimensional gauge field decomposed in Kaluza-Klein modes includes a tower of heavy spin-1 particles whose longitudinal polarizations are linear combinations of the extra-dimensional components, and a tower of heavy spin-0 particles corresponding to the orthogonal combinations. These linear combinations depend on the Kaluza-Klein numbers, and are independent of the gauge fixing. If the gauge symmetry is broken by the vacuum expectation value of a six-dimensional scalar, at each Kaluza-Klein level three spinless fields in the adjoint representation mix to provide the longitudinal polarization of the spin-1 mode, leaving the orthogonal states as two spin-0 particles. We derive the interactions of the Kaluza-Klein modes for generic gauge theories, laying the groundwork for the Standard Model in two universal extra dimensions, and more generally for future model building and phenomenological studies.

Abstract:Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions have been receiving much attention recently. Though quantum field theories with gauge field coupling to chiral fermion suffer from the loss of gauge invariance, it can be consistently quantized[1]. A proper quantum treatment of the gauge degrees of freedom in chiral gauge theories uncovers the presence of the Wess-Zumino effective action exactly[2]. In view of these interests in chiral gauge theories, the study of two-dimensional chiral gauge model on the lattice should prove useful. It is well-known that there will appear the species dubling when we naively discretize a fermion on the lattice[3]. In our approach we shall use Wilson fermion[4] which copes the problem[5]. The Wilson term, however, will break not only the chiral invariance but also the gauge invariance when the chiral gauge field is introduced. Aoki[6] had redrived the nonabelian anomaly with consideration of chiral gauge theory on the lattice and thought the existence of the anomaly may be related with the gauge symmetry breaking due to the Wilson term. It will be shown in follows that the Wess-Zumino effective action and the vector-boson mass as the anomalous generation terms appear due to a nontrivial change in the Wilson term under the chiral transformation in fermion.

Abstract:Classical two-dimensional Liouville gravity is often considered in conformal gauge which has a residual left and right Virasoro symmetry algebra. We consider an alternate, chiral, gauge which has a residual right Virasoro Kac-Moody algebra, and no left Virasoro algebra. The Kac-Moody zero mode is the left-moving energy. Dirac brackets of the constrained Hamiltonian theory are derived, and the residual symmetries are shown to be generated by integrals of the conserved chiral currents. The central charge and Kac-Moody level are computed. The possible existence of a corresponding quantum theory is discussed.

Abstract:We study 𝒩=( N,0) super-Poincaré invariant six-dimensional massless and five-dimensional massive on-shell amplitudes. We demonstrate that in six dimensions, all possible three-point amplitudes involving self-dual tensor multiplets are necessarily embedded in gravitational theories. To obtain non-gravitational amplitudes, we study instead five-dimensional chiral massive amplitudes which can be considered as the KK reduction of six-dimensional chiral theories. We indeed find non-gravitational amplitudes whose on-shell degrees of freedom are shown to match those of the massive particle states that arise from self-dual strings wrapping a circle. Along the way we find interesting hints of a fermionic symmetry in the (2 , 0) theory, which accompanies the self-dual tensor gauge symmetry. We also discuss novel theories with (3 , 0) and (4 , 0) supersymmetry.
Chiral gauge theories, generalized anomalies and breaking of the color-flavor-locked center symmetry

Abstract:We study the strong-interaction dynamics of a class of $4D$ chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories with a fermion in a symmetric second-rank tensor representation and a number of fermions in an anti-antisymmetric tensor representation, extending the previous work on chiral gauge theories such as the Bars-Yankielowicz and the generalized Georgi-Glashow models. The main tool of our analysis is the anomalies obstructing the gauging of certain 1-form color-flavor-locked center symmetry, together with some flavor symmetries. The matching requirement for these mixed-anomalies strongly favors dynamical Higgs phases caused by bifermion condensate formation, against a confinement phase with no condensates and no symmetry breaking, or a confinement phase with multifermion color-singlet condensates only. Dynamical gauge symmetry breaking and the spontaneous breaking of a $U(1)$ symmetry caused by such condensates mean that the color-flavor-locked 1-form center symmetry itself is lost in the infrared. One is led to a solution, if not unique, which satisfies fully the conventional as well as the new, generalized 't Hooft anomaly matching requirements.

Abstract:We use algebraic geometry to study the anomaly-free representations of an arbitrary gauge Lie algebra for 4-dimensional spacetime fermions. For irreducible representations, the problem reduces to studying the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{su}_n$ for $n\geq 3$. We show that there exist equivalence classes of such representations that are in bijection with the rational points on a projective variety that are dense in a region of the underlying real variety diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^{n-3}$. It follows that the chiral ones overwhelm the non-chiral ones for $n \geq 5$. We present an efficient algorithm to find explicit anomaly-free irreducible representations and discuss the generalization to reducible representations.

Chiral gauge theory at the boundary between topological phases

Abstract:I demonstrate how chiral fermions with an exact gauge symmetry can appear on the d-dimensional boundary of a finite volume (d+1)-dimensional manifold, without any light mirror partners. The condition for the d-dimensional boundary theory to be local is that gauge anomalies cancel and that the volume be large. This can likely be achieved on a lattice and provides a new paradigm for the lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories.

Abstract:We consider a special double scaling limit, recently introduced by two of the authors, combining weak coupling and large imaginary twist, for the $\gamma$-twisted $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. We also establish the analogous limit for ABJM theory. The resulting non-gauge chiral 4D and 3D theories of interacting scalars and fermions are integrable in the planar limit. In spite of the breakdown of conformality by double-trace interactions, most of the correlators for local operators of these theories are conformal, with non-trivial anomalous dimensions defined by specific, integrable Feynman diagrams. We discuss the details of this diagrammatics. We construct the doubly-scaled asymptotic Bethe ansatz (ABA) equations for multi-magnon states in these theories. Each entry of the mixing matrix of local conformal operators in the simplest of these theories - the bi-scalar model in 4D and tri-scalar model in 3D - is given by a single Feynman diagram at any given loop order. The related diagrams are in principle computable, up to a few scheme dependent constants, by integrability methods (quantum spectral curve or ABA). These constants should be fixed from direct computations of a few simplest graphs. This integrability-based method is advocated to be able to provide information about some high loop order graphs which are hardly computable by other known methods. We exemplify our approach with specific five-loop graphs.

Abstract:Chiral bosons, or self-dual p-form fields, are ubiquitous in string theoretic contexts but are challenging to treat. Lagrangian constructions invariably introduce a complexity be it auxiliary fields or sacrificing Lorentz invariance. In this note we show how to pass between such different approaches to chiral bosons starting from a Chern Simons point of view to recover formulations of Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin and of Mkrtchyan. This leads to a novel generalisation of the latter to include non-Abelian chiral bosons in 2-dimensions, and generalisations to include twisted self-duality which are relevant in T-duality symmetric approaches to string theory. Our approach also shows how global affine symmetries of two- and higher-dimensional chiral bosons emerge from broken Chern-Simons gauge transformations on the boundary.

Abstract:The chiral algebra of a 4D $N\geq2$ superconformal field theory is a vertex operator algebra generated by the Schur subsector of the 4D theory and its rigid (yet rich) structure has been useful in constraining and classifying 4D N=2 SCFTs. We study how the chiral algebra arises from the worldsheet perspective. In the worldsheet CFT dual of 4D N=4 SYM at the free point, we extract the subsector that corresponds to the spacetime Schur operators at generic coupling, and show how they generate the chiral algebra. The result can be easily generalized to 4D N=2 superconformal field theories that arise as orbifolds of 4D N=4 SYM.

Abstract:We study chiral algebra in the reduction of 3D $\mathcal{N} = 2 $ supersymmetric gauge theories on an interval with the $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Dirichlet boundary conditions on both ends. By invoking the 3D ``twisted formalism'' and the 2D $\beta\gamma$-description we explicitly find the perturbative $\overline{Q}_+$ cohomology of the reduced theory. It is shown that the vertex algebras of boundary operators are enhanced by the line operators. A full non-perturbative result is found in the abelian case, where the chiral algebra is given by the rank two Narain lattice VOA, and two more equivalent descriptions are provided. Conjectures and speculations on the nonperturbative answer in the non-abelian case are also given.

Abstract:We study the non-perturbative corrections generated by exotic instantons in U(N) gauge theories in eight and four dimensions. As it was shown previously, the eight-dimensional prepotential can be resummed using a plethystic formula showing only a dependence from the center of mass and from a U(1) gauge factor. On the contrary, chiral correlators in eight and four dimensions display a non-trivial dependence from the full gauge group. Furthermore the resolvent, the generating function for the eight and four dimensional correlators, can be written in a compact form both in the eight and four dimensional cases.

Abstract:Some time ago, Seiberg and Witten solved for moduli spaces of vacua parameterized by scalar vacuum expectation values in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. More recently, new vacua associated to soft theorems and asymptotic symmetries have been found. This paper takes some first steps towards a complete picture of the infrared geometry of $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theory incorporating both of these infrared structures.

Abstract:This review provides a detailed introduction to chiral gauge theories, renormalization theory, and the application of dimensional regularization with the non-anticommuting BMHV scheme for $\gamma_5$. One goal is to show how chiral gauge theories can be renormalized despite the spurious breaking of gauge invariance and how to obtain the required symmetry-restoring counterterms. A second goal is to familiarize the reader with the theoretical basis of the renormalization of chiral gauge theories, the theorems that guarantee the existence of renormalized chiral gauge theories at all orders as consistent quantum theories. Relevant topics include BPHZ renormalization, Slavnov-Taylor identities, the BRST formalism and algebraic renormalization, as well as the theorems guaranteeing that dimensional regularization is a consistent regularization/renormalization scheme. All of these, including their proofs and interconnections, are explained and discussed in detail. Further, these theoretical concepts are illustrated in practical applications with the example of an Abelian and a non-Abelian chiral gauge theory. Not only the renormalization procedure for such chiral gauge theories is explained step by step, but also the results of all counterterms, including the symmetry-restoring ones, necessary for the consistent renormalization are explicitly provided.

A gauge-invariant measure for gauge fields on $\mathbb{CP}^2$

Abstract:We consider four-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory living on a complex projective space $\mathbb{CP}^2$ as a way of gaining insights into (3+1)-dimensional QCD. In particular, we use a complex parametrization of gauge fields on which gauge transformations act homogeneously. This allows us to factor out the gauge degrees of freedom from the volume element leading to a manifestly gauge-invariant measure for the gauge-orbit space (the space of all gauge potentials modulo gauge transformations). The terms appearing in the measure that are of particular interest are mass-like terms for the gauge-invariant modes of the gauge fields. Since these mass terms come with dimensional parameters they are significant in the context of dimensional transmutation. Moreover, the existence of local gauge-invariant mass terms on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ could be related to Schwinger-Dyson calculations of the soft gluon mass. Finally, we argue that there is a kinematic regime in which the theory can be approximated by a 4d Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory. This result can be used to draw similarities between the mechanism of confinement in four and (2+1) dimensions.

Abstract:The fermion four-point functions and condensates as the chiral symmetry order parameters are calculated analytically in U(1) gauge theory in the massless phase. It is shown that in leading order of the loop expansion of the effective action, there is a critical coupling for the nonperturbative parity-invariant chirality-changing four-fermion functions; this critical coupling however is the same as that for dynamical mass generation. Therefore there is no breaking of chiral symmetry through the condensation of four-fermion functions below the critical coupling for dynamical mass generation for the fermions.

Abstract:We show that Seiberg-like duality of 𝒩=1 gauge theory coupledwith tensor chiral fields and fundamental chiral fields works if the mesonspectrum built from the tensor fields takes particular form: a) It should betruncated; b) The R charges of tensor fields {R_a} and the truncatedmesons {R_j} take very special values.
