Abstract:Extreme continuum variability in extragalactic nuclear sources can indicate extreme changes in accretion flows onto supermassive black holes. We explore the multiwavelength nature of a continuum flare in the Seyfert LCRS B040659.9$-$385922. The all-sky X-ray surveys conducted by the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG)/extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) showed that its X-ray flux increased by a factor of roughly five over six months, and concurrent optical photometric monitoring with the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) showed a simultaneous increase. We complemented the eROSITA and ATLAS data by triggering a multiwavelength follow-up monitoring program (X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission: XMM-Newton Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer: NICER; optical spectroscopy) to study the evolution of the accretion disk, broad-line region, and X-ray corona. During the campaign, X-ray and optical continuum flux subsided over roughly six months. Our campaign includes two XMM-Newton observations, one taken near the peak of this flare and the other taken when the flare had subsided. The soft X-ray excess in both XMM-Newton observations was power law-like (distinctly nonthermal). Using a simple power law, we observed that the photon index of the soft excess varies from a steep value of $ 2.7$ at the flare peak to a relatively flatter value of $ 2.2$ as the flare subsided. We successfully modeled the broadband optical/UV/X-ray spectral energy distribution at both the flare peak and post-flare times with the AGNSED model, incorporating thermal disk emission into the optical/UV and warm thermal Comptonization in the soft X-rays. The accretion rate falls by roughly 2.5, and the radius of the hot Comptonizing region increases from the flaring state to the post-flare state. Additionally, from the optical spectral observations, we find that the broad He ii lambda 4686 emission line fades significantly as the optical/UV/X-ray continuum fades, which could indicate a substantial flare of disk emission above 54 eV. We also observed a redshifted broad component in the H$ beta $ emission line that is present during the high flux state of the source and disappears in subsequent observations. A sudden strong increase in the local accretion rate in this source manifested itself via an increase in accretion disk emission and in thermal Comptonized emission in the soft X-rays, which subsequently faded. The redshifted broad Balmer component could be associated with a transient kinematic component distinct from that comprising the rest of the broad-line region.

AstroSat investigation of X-ray flares on two active K-M systems: CC Eri and AB Dor

Abstract:We present an X-ray and UV investigation of five X-ray flares detected on two active systems, CC Eri and AB Dor, using the AstroSat observatory. The peak X-ray luminosities of the flares in the 0.3$-$7.0 keV band are found to be within 10$^{31-33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Preliminary spectral analysis indicates the presence of three and four-temperature corona for CC Eri and AB Dor, respectively, where the highest temperature is found to vary with flare. The flare temperatures peaked at 51$-$59 MK for CC Eri and 29$-$44 MK for AB Dor. The peak emission measures of the flaring loops are estimated to be $\sim$10$^{54}$ for CC Eri and $\sim$10$^{55}$ cm$^{-3}$ for AB Dor. Global metallic abundances were also found to increase during flares.

Investigation of non-equilibrium ionization plasma during a giant flare of UX Arietis triggered with MAXI and observed with NICER

Abstract:We detected a giant X-ray flare from the RS-CVn type binary star UX Ari using MAXI on 2020 August 17 and started a series of NICER observations 89 minutes later. For a week, the entire duration of the flare was covered with 32 snapshot observations including the rising phase. The X-ray luminosity reached 2$\times$10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and the entire energy release was $\sim 10^{38}$ erg in the 0.5--8.0~keV band. X-ray spectra characterized by continuum emission with lines of Fe XXV He$\alpha$ and Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$ were obtained. We found that the temperature peaks before that of the flux, which suggests that the period of plasma formation in the magnetic flare loop was captured. Using the continuum information (temperature, flux, and their delay time), we estimated the flare loop size to be $\sim 3 \times 10^{11}$ cm and the peak electron density to be $\sim 4\times10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$. Furthermore, using the line ratio of Fe XXV and Fe XXVI, we investigated any potential indications of deviation from collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE). The X-ray spectra were consistent with CIE plasma throughout the flare, but the possibility of an ionizing plasma away from CIE was not rejected in the flux rising phase.

Understanding the Radio Emission from $ε$ Eridani

Abstract:Some solar-type stars are known to present faint, time-variable radio continuum emission whose nature is not clearly established. We report on Jansky Very Large Array observations of the nearby star $\epsilon$ Eridani at 10.0 and 33.0 GHz. We find that this star has flux density variations on scales down to days, hours and minutes. On 2020 Apr 15 it exhibited a radio pulse at 10.0 GHz with a total duration of about 20 minutes and a peak four times larger than the plateau of 40 $\mu$Jy present in that epoch. We were able to model the time behavior of this radio pulse in terms of the radiation from shocks ramming into the stellar wind. Such shocks can be produced by the wind interaction of violently expanding gas heated suddenly by energetic electrons from a stellar flare, similar to the observed solar flares. Because of the large temperature needed in the working surface to produce the observed emission, this has to be non thermal. It could be gyrosynchrotron or synchrotron emission. Unfortunately, the spectral index or polarization measurements from the radio pulse do not have enough signal-to-noise ratio to determine its nature.

EI Eridani: a star under the influence -- The effect of magnetic activity in the short and long term

Abstract:We use our photometric time series of more than forty years to analyze the long-term behaviour of EI Eri. Flare activity is investigated using space-borne photometric data obtained with TESS. The MUSICOS campaign aimed to achieve high-resolution spectroscopic observations from many sites around the globe, so that uninterrupted phase coverage of EI Eri became available. We use these data to reconstruct successive surface temperature maps of the star in order to study the changes of starspots on a very short timescale. We use long-term, seasonal period analysis of our photometric time series to study changes in the rotational period. Short-term Fourier-transform is also applied to look for activity cycle-like changes. We also study the phase and frequency distribution of hand-selected flares. We apply our multi-line Doppler imaging code to reconstruct four consecutive Doppler images. These images are also used to measure surface differential rotation by our cross-correlation technique. In addition, we carry out tests to demonstrate how Doppler imaging is affected by the fact that the data came from several different instruments with different spectral resolutions. Seasonal period analysis of the light curve reveals a smooth, significant change in period, possibly indicating the evolution of active latitudes. Temperature curves from $B-V$ and $V-I$ show slight differences, indicating the activity of EI Eri is spot dominated. Short-term Fourier transform reveals smoothly changing cycles between 4.5--5.5 and 8.9--11.6 years. The time-resolved spotted surface of EI Eri from Doppler imaging enabled us to follow the evolution of the different surface features. Cross-correlating the consecutive Doppler maps reveal surface shear of $\alpha=0.036\pm0.007$. Our tests validate our approach and show that the surface temperature distribution is adequately reconstructed by our method.

Submillimeter and X-ray observations of an X Class flare

Abstract:The GOES X1.5 class flare that occurred on August 30,2002 at 1327:30 UT is one of the few events detected so far at submillimeter wavelengths. We present a detailed analysis of this flare combining radio observations from 1.5 to 212 GHz (an upper limit of the flux is also provided at 405 GHz) and X-ray. Although the observations of radio emission up to 212 GHz indicates that relativistic electrons with energies of a few MeV were accelerated, no significant hard X-ray emission was detected by RHESSI above ~ 250 keV. Images at 12--20 and 50--100 keV reveal a very compact, but resolved, source of about ~ 10" x 10". EUV TRACE images show a multi-kernel structure suggesting a complex (multipolar) magnetic topology. During the peak time the radio spectrum shows an extended flatness from ~ 7 to 35 GHz. Modeling the optically thin part of the radio spectrum as gyrosynchrotron emission we obtained the electron spectrum (spectral index delta, instantaneous number of emitting electrons). It is shown that in order to keep the expected X-ray emission from the same emitting electrons below the RHESSI background at 250 keV, a magnetic field above 500 G is necessary. On the other hand, the electron spectrum deduced from radio observations >= 50 GHz is harder than that deduced from ~ 70 - 250 keV X-ray data, meaning that there must exist a breaking energy around a few hundred keV. During the decay of the impulsive phase, a hardening of the X-ray spectrum is observed which is interpreted as a hardening of the electron distribution spectrum produced by the diffusion due to Coulomb collisions of the trapped electrons in a medium with an electron density of n_e ~ 3E10 - 5E10 cm-3.

Superflare on a rapidly-rotating solar-type star captured in X-rays

Abstract:In this work, we studied X-ray source SRGe~J021932.4$-$040154 (SRGe J021932), which we associated with a single X-ray active star of spectral class G2V-G4V and the rotational period $\rm P_{rot} < 9.3$ days. Additional analysis of TESS light-curves allowed for the rotational period estimation of $3.2 \pm 0.5$ days. SRGe J021932 was observed with the SRG/eROSITA during eUDS survey in 2019 in a much dimmer state compared to the XMM-Newton catalogue 4XMM-DR12. Detailed analysis revealed that the archival XMM-Newton observations captured the source during a flaring event in 2017. The XMM-Newton light curve demonstrates a strong flare described with the Gaussian rise and exponential decay, typical for stellar flares, characterized by timescales of ${\sim}400$~s and ${\sim}1300$~s, respectively. The spectral analysis of the quiescent state reveals ${\sim}10$~MK plasma at luminosity of $(1.4\pm0.4) \times 10^{29}$ erg/s (0.3-4.5 keV). The spectrum of the flare is characterized by temperature of ${\sim}40$ MK and luminosity $(5.5\pm0.6)\times 10^{30}$ erg/s. The total energy emitted during the flare ${\sim}1.7 \times 10^{34}$ erg exceeds the canonical threshold of $10^{33}$ erg, allowing us to classify the observed event as a superflare on a rapidly-rotating solar-type star. Additionally, we present the upper limit on the surface starspot area based on the brightness variations and consider the hypothesis of the object being a binary system with G-type and M-type stars, suggested by two independent estimations of radial velocity variations from APOGEE-2 and Gaia.

Abstract:We present X-ray imaging and spectral analysis of all microflares the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) observed between March 2002 and March 2007, a total of 25,705 events. These microflares are small flares, from low GOES C Class to below A Class (background subtracted) and are associated with active regions. They were found by searching the 6-12 keV energy range during periods when the full sensitivity of RHESSI's detectors was available (see paper I). Each microflare is automatically analyzed at the peak time of the 6-12 keV emission: the thermal source size is found by forward-fitting the complex visibilities for 4-8 keV, and the spectral parameters (temperature, emission measure, power-law index) are found by forward fitting a thermal plus non-thermal model. The combination of these parameters allows us to present the first statistical analysis of the thermal and non-thermal energy at the peak times of microflares.

Abstract:The eROSITA instrument on board Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma has completed four scans of the X-ray sky, leading to the detection of almost one million X-ray sources in eRASS1 only, including multiple new X-ray binary candidates. We report on analysis of the X-ray binary 1eRASS J085039.9-421151, using a ~55\,ks long NuSTAR observation, following its detection in each eROSITA scan. Analysis of the eROSITA and NuSTAR X-ray spectra in combination with X-shooter data of the optical counterpart provide evidence of an X-ray binary with a red supergiant (RSG) companion, confirming previous results, although we determine a cooler spectral type of M2-3, owing to the presence of TiO bands in the optical and near infrared spectra. The X-ray spectrum is well-described by an absorbed power law with a high energy cutoff typically applied for accreting high mass X-ray binaries. In addition, we detect a strong fluorescent neutral iron line with an equivalent width of ~700\,eV and an absorption edge, the latter indicating strong absorption by a partial covering component. It is unclear if the partial absorber is ionised. There is no significant evidence of a cyclotron resonant scattering feature. We do not detect any pulsations in the NuSTAR lightcurves, possibly on account of a large spin period that goes undetected due to insufficient statistics at low frequencies or potentially large absorption that causes pulsations to be smeared out. Even so, the low persistent luminosity, the spectral parameters observed (photon index, $\Gamma<1.0$), and the minuscule likelihood of detection of RSG-black hole systems, suggest that the compact object is a neutron star.

An X-ray activity cycle on the young solar-like star $ε\ \rm Eridani$

Abstract:In 2015 we started the XMM-Newton monitoring of the young solar-like star Epsilon Eridani (440 Myr), one of the youngest solar-like stars with a known chromospheric CaII cycle. By analyzing the most recent Mount Wilson S-index CaII data of this star, we found that the chromospheric cycle lasts 2.92 +/- 0.02 yr, in agreement with past results. From the long-term X-ray lightcurve, we find clear and systematic X-ray variability of our target, consistent with the chromospheric CaII cycle. The average X-ray luminosity results to be 2 x 10^28 erg/s, with an amplitude that is only a factor 2 throughout the cycle. We apply a new method to describe the evolution of the coronal emission measure distribution of Epsilon Eridani in terms of solar magnetic structures: active regions, cores of active regions and flares covering the stellar surface at varying filling fractions. Combinations of these magnetic structures can describe the observed X-ray emission measure of Epsilon Eridani only if the solar flare emission measure distribution is restricted to events in the decay phase. The interpretation is that flares in the corona of Epsilon Eridani last longer than their solar counterparts. We ascribe this to the lower metallicity of Epsilon Eridani. Our analysis revealed also that the X-ray cycle of Epsilon Eridani is strongly dominated by cores of active regions. The coverage fraction of cores throughout the cycle changes by the same factor as the X-ray luminosity. The maxima of the cycle are characterized by a high percentage of covering fraction of the flares, consistent with the fact that flaring events are seen in the corresponding short-term X-ray lightcurves predominately at the cycle maxima. The high X-ray emission throughout the cycle of Epsilon Eridani is thus explained by the high percentage of magnetic structures on its surface.

Six Large Coronal X-ray Flares Observed With Chandra

Abstract:A study of the six largest coronal X-ray flares in the Chandra archive is presented. The flares were observed on II Peg, OU And, Algol, HR 1099, TZ CrB and CC Eri, all with the High Energy Transmission Grating spectrometer (HETG) and the ACIS detectors. We reconstruct an Emission Measure Distribution EMD(T), using a spectral line analysis method, for flare and quiescence states separately and compare the two. Subsequently, elemental abundaces are obtained from the EMD. We find similar behaviour of the EMD in all flares, namely a large high-T component appears while the low-T (kT < 2 keV) plasma is mostly unaffected, except for a small rise in the low-T Emission Measure. In five of the six flares we detect a First Ionization Potential (FIP) effect in the flare abundances relative to quiescence. This may contradict previous suggestions that flares are the cause of an inverse FIP effect in highly active coronae.

Serendipitous detection of an intense X-ray flare in the weak-line T Tauri star KM Ori with SRG/eROSITA

Abstract:Weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) exhibit X-ray flares, likely resulting from magnetic reconnection that heats the stellar plasma to very high temperatures. These flares are difficult to identify through targeted observations. Here, we report the serendipitous detection of the brightest X-ray flaring state of KM Ori in the eROSITA DR1 survey. Observations from SRG/eROSITA, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and XMM-Newton are analysed to assess the X-ray properties of KM Ori, thereby establishing its flaring state at the eROSITA epoch. The long-term (1999-2020) X-ray light curve generated for the Chandra observations confirmed that eROSITA captured the source at its highest X-ray flaring state recorded to date. Multi-instrument observations support the X-ray flaring state of the source, with time-averaged X-ray luminosity ($L_{0.2-5keV}$) reaching $\sim 1.9\times10^{32}{erg~s^{-1}}$ at the eROSITA epoch, marking it the brightest and possibly the longest flare observed to date. Such intense X-ray flares have been detected only in a few WTTS. The X-ray spectral analysis unveils the presence of multiple thermal plasma components at all epochs. The notably high luminosity ($L_{0.5-8~keV}\sim10^{32}{erg~s}^{-1}$), energy ($E_{0.5-8~keV}\sim10^{37}$erg), and the elevated emission measures of the thermal components in the eROSITA epoch indicate a superflare/megaflare state of KM Ori. Additionally, the H$\alpha$ line equivalent width of $\sim$-5Åfrom our optical spectral analysis, combined with the lack of infrared excess in the spectral energy distribution, were used to re-confirm the WTTS (thin disk/disk-less) classification of the source. The long-duration flare of KM Ori observed by eROSITA indicates the possibility of a slow-rise top-flat flare. The detection demonstrates the potential of eROSITA to uncover such rare, transient events, thereby providing new insights into the X-ray activity of WTTS.

Abstract:We report results from a multi-wavelength study of the 3B/X1.2 tworibbon disk flare (S15E44), which was well observed by both ground-based and space-borne instruments. Two pairs of conjugate kernels - K1 and K4, and K2and K3 - in the Hα images are identified. These kernels are linked by two different systems of EUV loops. K1 and K4 correspond to the two 17 GHz and 34 GHz microwave sources observed by the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH), while K2and K3 have no corresponding microwave sources. Optical spectroscopic observations suggest that all the four kernels are possible precipitating sites of non-thermal electrons. Thus the energy of electron deposited in K2 and K3 should be less than 100 keV. Two-dimensional distributions of the full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the Hα profiles and the line-of-sight (LOS) velocities derived from the Ca Ⅱ 8542 (A) profiles indicate that the largest FWHM and LOS velocity tends to be located near the outer edges of Hα kernels, which is consistent with the scenario of current two-ribbon flare models and previous results. When non-thermal electron bombardment is present, the observed Hα and Ca Ⅱ 8542 A profiles are similar to previous observational and theoretical results, while the He Ⅰ 10830 (A) profiles are different from the theoretical ones. This puts some constraints on future theoretical calculation of the He Ⅰ 10830 (A) line.
A Peculiar Flaring Episode of Cygnus X-1

Abstract:Recent monitoring of Cyg X-1 with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) revealed a period of intense flaring, which started in 2000 October and lasted until 2001 March. The source exhibited some quite unusual behaviors during this period. The soft X-ray flux of the source went up and down 3 times on a timescale of about 1 month, as discovered by the All-Sky Monitor aboard RXTE, before finally returning to the normal level (of the hard state). The observed spectral and temporal X-ray properties of Cyg X-1 are mostly intermediate between the canonical hard and soft states. This is known previously for strong X-ray flares; however, we show that the source did enter a period that resembles, in many ways, a sustained soft state during the last of the three flares. We make detailed comparisons between this flare and the 1996 state transition in terms of the observed X-ray properties, such as the flux-hardness correlation, X-ray spectrum, and power density spectrum. We point out the similarities and differences, and discuss possible implications of the results on our understanding of the phenomena of flares and state transitions associated with Cyg X-1.
Radio and X-ray Observations of Short-lived Episodes of Electron Acceleration in a Solar Microflare

Abstract:Solar flares are sudden energy release events in the solar corona, resulting from magnetic reconnection, that accelerates particles and heats the ambient plasma. During a flare, there are often multiple, temporally and spatially separated individual energy release episodes that can be difficult to resolve depending on the observing instrument. We present multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy observations of multiple electron acceleration episodes during a GOES B1.7-class two-ribbon flare on 2012 February 25, observed simultaneously with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 1--2 GHz, the Reuven Ramatay High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) in X-rays, and the Solar Dynamics Observatory in extreme ultraviolet (EUV). During the initial phase of the flare, five radio bursts were observed. A nonthermal X-ray source was seen co-temporal, but not co-spatial, with the first three radio bursts. Their radio spectra are interpreted as optically thick gyrosynchrotron emission. By fitting the radio spectra with a gyrosynchrotron model, we derive the magnetic field strength and nonthermal electron spectral parameters in each acceleration episode. Notably, the nonthermal parameters derived from X-rays differ considerably from the nonthermal parameters inferred from the radio. The observations are indicative of multiple, co-temporal acceleration episodes during the impulsive phase of a solar microflare. The X-ray and radio burst sources likely originate from separate electron distributions in different magnetic loops.

Multi-wavelength analysis of high energy electrons in solar flares: a case study of August 20, 2002 flare

Abstract:A multi-wavelength spatial and temporal analysis of solar high energy electrons is conducted using the August 20, 2002 flare of an unusually flat (gamma=1.8) hard X-ray spectrum. The flare is studied using RHESSI, Halpha, radio, TRACE, and MDI observations with advanced methods and techniques never previously applied in the solar flare context. A new method to account for X-ray Compton backscattering in the photosphere (photospheric albedo) has been used to deduce the primary X-ray flare spectra. The mean electron flux distribution has been analysed using both forward fitting and model independent inversion methods of spectral analysis. We show that the contribution of the photospheric albedo to the photon spectrum modifies the calculated mean electron flux distribution, mainly at energies below 100 keV. The positions of the Halpha emission and hard X-ray sources with respect to the current-free extrapolation of the MDI photospheric magnetic field and the characteristics of the radio emission provide evidence of the closed geometry of the magnetic field structure and the flare process in low altitude magnetic loops. In agreement with the predictions of some solar flare models, the hard X-ray sources are located on the external edges of the Halpha emission and show chromospheric plasma heated by the non-thermal electrons. The fast changes of Halpha intensities are located not only inside the hard X-ray sources, as expected if they are the signatures of the chromospheric response to the electron bombardment, but also away from them.

Energetics of a solar flare and a coronal mass ejection generated by a hot channel eruption

Abstract:Hot channels (HCs) are prevalent in the solar corona and play a critical role in driving flares and CMEs. In this paper, we estimate the energy contents of an X1.4 eruptive flare with a fast CME generated by a HC eruption on 2011 September 22. Originating from NOAA AR11302, the HC is the most dramatic feature in 131 and 94 Å images observed by SDO/AIA. The flare is simultaneously observed by SDO/AIA, RHESSI, and STEREO-B/EUVI. The CME is simultaneously detected by the white-light coronagraphs of SOHO/LASCO and STEREO-B/COR1. Using multiwavelength and multiview observations of the eruption, various energy components of the HC, flare, and CME are calculated. The thermal and kinetic energies of the HC are (1.77$\pm$0.61)$\times10^{30}$ erg and (2.90$\pm$0.79)$\times10^{30}$ erg, respectively. The peak thermal energy of the flare and total radiative loss of SXR-emitting plasma are (1.63$\pm$0.04)$\times10^{31}$ erg and (1.03$-$1.31)$\times10^{31}$ erg, respectively. The ratio between the thermal energies of HC and flare is 0.11$\pm$0.03, suggesting that thermal energy of the HC is not negligible. The kinetic and potential energies of the CME are (3.43$\pm$0.94)$\times10^{31}$ erg and (2.66$\pm$0.49)$\times10^{30}$ erg, yielding a total energy of (3.69$\pm$0.98)$\times10^{31}$ erg for the CME. Continuous heating of the HC is required to balance the rapid cooling by heat conduction, which probably originate from intermittent magnetic reconnection at the flare current sheet. Our investigation may provide insight into the buildup, release, and conversion of energies in large-scale solar eruptions.

Investigation of a small X-ray flaring event in NLS1 galaxy NGC 4051

Abstract:We performed a detailed broadband spectral and timing analysis of a small flaring event of ~120 ks in a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 using simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations. The ~300 ks long NuSTAR observation and the overlapping XMM-Newton exposure were segregated into pre-flare, flare, and post-flare segments. During the flare, the NuSTAR count rate peaked at 2.5 times the mean count rate before the flare. Using various physical and phenomenological models, we examined the 0.3-50 keV X-ray spectrum, which consists of a primary continuum, reprocessed emission, warm absorber and ultra-fast outflows in different timescales. The mass of the central black hole is estimated to be >1.32*10^5 solar mass from the spectral analysis. The absence of correlation between flux in 6-7 keV and 10-50 keV bands suggests different origins of the iron emission line and the Compton hump. From the spectral analysis, we found that the reflection fraction drops significantly during the flare, accompanied by an increase in the coronal height above the disc. The spectrum became soft during the flare supporting the "softer when brighter" nature of the source. After the alleviation of the flare, the coronal height drops and the corona heats up. This indicates that there could be inflation of the corona during the flare. We found no significant change in the inner accretion disc or the seed photon temperature. These results suggest that the flaring event occurred due to the change in the coronal properties rather than any notable change in the accretion disc.
