Abstract:We present an exposition of our ongoing project in a new area of applicable mathematics: practical computation with finitely generated linear groups over infinite fields. Methodology and algorithms available for this class of groups are surveyed. We illustrate the solution of hard mathematical problems by computer experimentation. Possible avenues for further progress are discussed.

Abstract:There has been substantial investigation in recent years of subdirect products of limit groups and their finite presentability and homological finiteness properties. To contrast the results obtained for limit groups, Baumslag, Bridson, Holt and Miller investigated subdirect products (fibre products) of finitely presented metabelian groups. They showed that, in contrast to the case for limit groups, such subdirect products could have diverse behaviour with respect to finite presentability. We show that, in a sense that can be made precise, `most' subdirect products of a finite set of finitely presented metabelian groups are again finitely presented. To be a little more precise, we assign to each subdirect product a point of an algebraic variety and show that, in most cases, those points which correspond to non-finitely presented subdirect products form a subvariety of smaller dimension.

Abstract:We establish a general criterion for the finite presentability of subdirect products of groups and use this to characterize finitely presented residually free groups. We prove that, for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, a residually free group is of type ${\rm{FP}}_n$ if and only if it is of type ${\rm{F}}_n$. New families of subdirect products of free groups are constructed, including the first examples of finitely presented subgroups that are neither ${\rm{FP}}_\infty$ nor of Stallings-Bieri type. The template for these examples leads to a more constructive characterization of finitely presented residually free groups up to commensurability. We show that the class of finitely presented residually free groups is recursively enumerable and present a reduction of the isomorphism problem. A new algorithm is described which, given a finite presentation of a residually free group, constructs a canonical embedding into a direct product of finitely many limit groups. The (multiple) conjugacy and membership problems for finitely presented subgroups of residually free groups are solved.

Abstract:Let G \mathcal {G} denote the space of finitely generated marked groups. For any finitely generated group G G , we construct a continuous, injective map f f from the space of subgroups S u b ( G ) Sub(G) to G \mathcal {G} that sends conjugate subgroups to isomorphic marked groups; in addition, if G G is finitely presented and H ≤ G H\le G is finitely generated, then f ( H ) f(H) is finitely presented. This result allows us to transfer various topological phenomena occurring in S u b ( G ) Sub(G) to G \mathcal {G} . In particular, we provide the first example of a finitely presented group whose isomorphism class in G \mathcal {G} has no isolated points.

Abstract:Motivated by a theorem of Groves and Wilton, we propose the study of the lattice of numberings of isomorphism classes of marked groups as a rigorous and comprehensive framework to study global decision problems for finitely generated groups. We establish the Rice and Rice-Shapiro Theorems for recursive presentations, and establish similar results for co-recursive presentations. We give an algorithmic characterization of finitely presentable groups in terms of semi-decidability of two decision problems: the word problem and the marked quotient problem, which we introduce. We explain how this result can be used to define algorithmic generalizations of finite presentations. Finally, we discuss how the Adian-Rabin Theorem provides incomplete answers in several respects.

Abstract:The isomorphism problem for infinite finitely presented groups is probably the hardest among standard algorithmic problems in group theory. Classes of groups where it has been completely solved are nilpotent groups, hyperbolic groups, and limit groups. In this short paper, we address the problem of isomorphism to particular groups, including free groups. We also address the algorithmic problem of embedding a finitely presented group in a given limit group.

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Abstract:In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other. This leads to many new examples of groups not presentable by products, including all groups with infinitely many ends, the (outer) automorphism groups of free groups, Thompson's groups, and even some elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:In this paper we describe an algorithm for computing the left, right, or 2-sided congruences of a finitely presented semigroup or monoid with finitely many classes, and alternative algorithm when the finitely presented semigroup or monoid is finite. We compare the two algorithms presented to existing algorithms and implementations. The first algorithm is a generalization of Sims' low index subgroup algorithm for finding the congruences of a monoid. The second algorithm involves determining the distinct principal congruences, and then finding all of their possible joins. Variations of this algorithm have been suggested in numerous contexts by numerous authors. We show how to utilise the theory of relative Green's relations, and a version of Schreier's Lemma for monoids, to reduce the number of principal congruences that must be generated as the first step of this approach. Both of the algorithms described in this paper are implemented in the GAP package Semigroups, and the first algorithm is available in the C++ library libsemigroups and in its python bindings libsemigroups_pybind.

Abstract:The set of finitely generated subgroups of the group $PL_+(I)$ of orientation-preserving piecewise-linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval includes many important groups, most notably R.~Thompson's group $F$. In this paper we show that every finitely generated subgroup $G<PL_+(I)$ is either soluble, or contains an embedded copy of Brin's group $B$, a finitely generated, non-soluble group, which verifies a conjecture of the first author from 2009. In the case that $G$ is soluble, we show that the derived length of $G$ is bounded above by the number of breakpoints of any finite set of generators. We specify a set of `computable' subgroups of $PL_+(I)$ (which includes R. Thompson's group $F$) and we give an algorithm which determines in finite time whether or not any given finite subset $X$ of such a computable group generates a soluble group. When the group is soluble, the algorithm also determines the derived length of $\langle X\rangle$. Finally, we give a solution of the membership problem for a family of finitely generated soluble subgroups of any computable subgroup of $PL_+(I)$.

Abstract:Finite index subgroups of the modular group are of great arithmetic importance. Farey symbols, introduced by Ravi Kulkarni in 1991, are a tool for working with these groups. Given such a group $\Gamma$, a Farey symbol for $\Gamma$ is a certain finite sequence of rational numbers (representing vertices of a fundamental domain of $\Gamma$) together with pairing information for the edges between the vertices. They are a compact way of encoding the information about the group and they provide a simple way to do calculations with the group. For example: calculating an independent set of generators and decomposing group elements into a word in these generators, finding coset representatives, elliptic points, and genus of the group, testing if the group is congruence, etc. In this expository article, we will discuss Farey Symbols and explicit algorithms for working with them.

Abstract:The Galois/monodromy group of a family of geometric problems or equations is a subtle invariant that encodes the structure of the solutions. We give numerical methods to compute the Galois group and study it when it is not the full symmetric group. One algorithm computes generators, while the other studies its structure as a permutation group. We illustrate these algorithms with examples using a Macaulay2 package we are developing that relies upon Bertini to perform monodromy computations.

Abstract:We prove two results on some special generators of finite simple groups and use them to prove that every non-abelian finite simple group $S$ admits a non-congruence presentation (as conjectured in [CLT24]), and that if $S$ has a non-trivial Schur multiplier, then it admits a smooth cover (as conjectured in [CFLZ]).

Abstract:We prove that every finitely presented self-similar group embeds in a finitely presented simple group. This establishes that every group embedding in a finitely presented self-similar group satisfies the Boone-Higman conjecture. The simple groups in question are certain commutator subgroups of Röver-Nekrashevych groups, and the difficulty lies in the fact that even if a Röver-Nekrashevych group is finitely presented, its commutator subgroup might not be. We also discuss a general example involving matrix groups over certain rings, which in particular establishes that every finitely generated subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q})$ satisfies the Boone-Higman conjecture.

In this paper, by introducing some computational methods and using theoretical approaches together, we not only solve several problems but also pave the way to study the topic. Abstract:We consider semigroup algorithmic problems in finitely generated metabelian groups. Our paper focuses on three decision problems introduced by Choffrut and Karhum\"{a}ki (2005): the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain a neutral element?), the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) and the Inverse Problem (does a semigroup contain the inverse of a generator?). We show that all three problems are decidable for finitely generated sub-semigroups of finitely generated metabelian groups. In particular, we establish a correspondence between polynomial semirings and sub-semigroups of metabelian groups using an interaction of graph theory, convex polytopes, algebraic geometry and number theory. Since the Semigroup Membership problem (does a semigroup contain a given element?) is known to be undecidable in finitely generated metabelian groups, our result completes the decidability characterization of semigroup algorithmic problems in metabelian groups.

Abstract:This survey paper concerns mainly with some asymptotic topological properties of finitely presented discrete groups: quasi-simple filtration (QSF), geometric simple connectivity (GSC), topological inverse-representations, and the notion of easy groups. As we will explain, these properties are central in the theory of discrete groups seen from a topological viewpoint at infinity. Also, we shall outline the main steps of the achievements obtained in the last years around the very general question whether or not all finitely presented groups satisfy these conditions.

Abstract:We investigate decision problems for finitely generated groups described by word problem algorithms. This is equivalent to studying groups described by computable labelled Cayley graphs. We relate these problems to the study of computable analysis on the space of marked groups, and point out several results of computable analysis that can be directly applied to obtain group theoretical results. Those results, used in conjunction with the version of Higman's Embedding Theorem that preserves solvability of the word problem, provide powerful tools to build finitely presented groups with solvable word problem but with various undecidable properties. Interestingly, the only results of computable analysis that can be applied together with Higman's Embedding Theorem are those of what is known as ``Markov's school of computable analysis''. We thus focus on articles which predate most of what is seen as the modern corpus of research in computable analysis. The presented results show that these older results are still very relevant. We also place group properties in the first levels of the arithmetical hierarchy for decision problems about groups given by word problem algorithms, and show that on many group properties usually considered, this effective hierarchy corresponds sharply to the Borel hierarchy. Finally, we prove that the space of marked groups is a Polish space that is not \emph{effectively Polish}. Because of this, many of the most important results of Markovian computable analysis cannot be applied to the space of marked groups. This includes the Kreisel-Lacombe-Schoenfield-Ceitin Theorem and a theorem of Moschovakis. The space of marked groups constitutes the first natural example of a Polish space that is not effectively Polish.
