Abstract:Bosonic string theory with the possibility for an arbitrary number of strings - i.e. a string field theory - is formulated by a Hilbert space (a Fock space), which is just that for massless noninteracting scalars. We earlier presented this novel type of string field theory, but now we show that it leads to scattering just given by the Veneziano model amplitude. Generalization to strings with fermion modes would presumably be rather easy. It is characteristic for our formulation /model that: 1) We have thrown away some null set of information compared to usual string field theory, 2)Formulated in terms of our \objects" (= the non-interacting scalars) there is no interaction and essentially no time development(Heisenberg picture), 3) so that the S-matrix is in our Hilbert space given as the unit matrix, S=1, and 4) the Veneziano scattering amplitude appear as the overlap between the initial and the final state described in terms of the \objects". 5) The integration in the Euler beta function making up the Veneziano model appear from the summation over the number of \objects" from one of the incoming strings which goes into a certain one of the two outgoing strings. A correction from Weyl anomaly is needed to get the correct form of the Veneziano amplitude and it only fits for 26 dimensions.

Abstract:Recently, an infinite family of one-parameter generalizations of the Veneziano amplitude were bootstrapped using as input assumptions an integer mass spectrum, crossing symmetry, high-energy boundedness, and exchange of finite spins. This new result was dubbed the hypergeometric Veneziano amplitude, with a real-valued deformation parameter r. Virtual color-kinematics duality: 6-pt 1-loop MHV amplitudes

Abstract:We study 1-loop MHV amplitudes in 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills theory and in 𝒩 = 8 supergravity. For Yang-Mills we find that the simple form for the full amplitude presented by Del Duca, Dixon and Maltoni naturally leads to one that has physical residues on all compact contours. After expanding the simple form in terms of standard scalar integrals, we introduce redundancies under certain symmetry considerations to impose the color-kinematics duality of Bern, Carrasco and Johansson (BCJ). For five particles we directly find the results of Carrasco and Johansson as well as a new compact form for the supergravity amplitude. For six particles we find that all kinematic dual Jacobi identities are encapsulated in a single functional equation relating the expansion coefficients. By the BCJ double-copy construction we obtain a formula for the corresponding 𝒩 = 8 super-gravity amplitude. Quite surprisingly, all physical information becomes independent of the expansion coefficients modulo the functional equation. In other words, there is no need to solve the functional equation at all. This is quite welcome as the functional equation we find, using our restricted set of redundancies, actually has no solutions. For this reason we call these results virtual color-kinematics duality. We end with speculations about the meaning of an interesting global vs. local feature of the functional equation and the situation at higher points.
Veneziano and Shapiro-Virasoro amplitudes of arbitrarily excited strings

Abstract:We extend the Veneziano and Shapiro-Virasoro amplitudes to four arbitrarily excited states in bosonic string theory. We use the formalism of coherent string states based on the Di Vecchia-Del Giudice-Fubini construction. Within the same formalism, we also analyze the three string scattering finding the covariant version of the three reggeon interaction. Then studying the factorization properties of the extended four string scattering amplitudes we identify the covariant version of the three string interaction. Finally we obtain generalized Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations connecting the scattering of four open and closed arbitrarily excited states.

Scattering on the Worldvolume: Amplitude Relations in Brower-Goddard String Models

Abstract:We investigate the Brower-Goddard extension of the Veneziano and Virasoro-Shapiro four-point amplitudes obtained by generalizing the Koba-Nielsen integrals to $d$-dimensional conformally invariant integrals. The amplitudes derived from this framework exhibit polynomial residues and can be shown to adhere to polynomial bounds at high energies. In odd dimensions, the amplitudes decompose into sums of three partial amplitudes, enabling the formulation of general amplitude relations that subsume the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) formula as a particular case. The amplitudes contain multiple tachyons in their spectra. Still, we demonstrate that their residues comply with the positivity conditions mandated by unitarity for spacetime dimensions at or below critical values $D_\text{crit}(d)$, where $D_\text{crit}(6)=26$ and $D_\text{crit}(\infty)=10$. In closing, we contemplate physical applications for membranes and potential extensions of the formalism.

An excursion into the string spectrum

Abstract:We propose a covariant technique to excavate physical bosonic string states by entire trajectories rather than individually. The approach is based on Howe duality: the string's spacetime Lorentz algebra commutes with a certain inductive limit of $sp(\bullet)$, with the Virasoro constraints forming a subalgebra of the Howe dual algebra $sp(\bullet)$. There are then infinitely many simple trajectories of states, which are lowest-weight representations of $sp(\bullet)$ and hence of the Virasoro algebra. Deeper trajectories are recurrences of the simple ones and can be probed by suitable trajectory-shifting operators built out of the Howe dual algebra generators. We illustrate the formalism with a number of subleading trajectories and compute a sample of tree-level amplitudes.

Abstract:Dual resonance is one of the great miracles of string theory. At a fundamental level, it implies that the particles exchanged in different channels are subtly equivalent. Furthermore, it is inextricably linked to the property of exceptionally tame high-energy behavior. In this paper, we present explicit, closed-form expressions for a new class of dual resonant amplitudes describing an infinite tower of spins for an arbitrary mass spectrum. In particular, the input of our construction is a user-defined, fully customizable choice of masses. The resulting "bespoke" amplitudes are well behaved in the ultraviolet and analytic except at simple poles whose residues are polynomial in the momentum transfer, in accordance with locality. The absence of branch cuts can be seen using Newton's identities, but can also be made manifest by expressing the amplitudes as a simple dlog integral of the Veneziano amplitude that remaps the linear Regge trajectories of the string to a tunable spectrum. We identify open regions of parameter space that firmly deviate from string theory but nevertheless comport with partial wave unitarity. Last but not least, we generalize our construction to the scattering of any number of particles in terms of a dlog transform of the Koba-Nielsen worldsheet integral formula.

The Stringy S-matrix Bootstrap: Maximal Spin and Superpolynomial Softness

Abstract:We explore the space of meromorphic amplitudes with extra constraints coming from the shape of the leading Regge trajectory. This information comes in two guises: it bounds the maximal spin of exchanged particles of a given mass; it leads to sum rules obeyed by the discontinuity of the amplitude, which express the softness of scattering at high energies. We assume that the leading Regge trajectory is linear, and we derive bounds on the low-energy Wilson coefficients using the dual and primal approaches. For the graviton-graviton scattering in four dimensions, the maximal spin constraint leads to slightly more stringent bounds than those that follow from general constraints of analyticity, crossing, and unitarity. The exponential softness at high energies is manifest in our primal approach and is not used in our implementation of the dual approach. Nevertheless, we observe the agreement between the bounds obtained from both. We conclude that high-energy superpolynomial softness does not leave an obvious imprint on the low-energy observables. We exhibit a unitary three-parameter deformation of the Veneziano amplitude for the open string case. It has a novel, exponentially soft behavior at high energies and fixed angles. We generalize the previous analysis of this regime and present a stringy version of the lower bound on high-energy, fixed-angle scattering by Cerulus and Martin.

On Unitarity of the Hypergeometric Amplitude

Abstract:The hypergeometric amplitude is a one-parameter deformation of the Veneziano amplitude for four-point tachyon scattering in bosonic string theory that is consistent with $S$-matrix bootstrap constraints. In this article we construct a similar hypergeometric generalization of the Veneziano amplitude for type-I superstring theory. We then rule out a large region of the $(r,m^2,D)$ parameter space as non-unitary, and establish another large subset of the $(r, m^2, D)$ parameter space where all partial wave coefficients are positive. We also analyze positivity in various limits and special cases. As a corollary to our analysis, we are able to directly demonstrate positivity of a wider set of Veneziano amplitude partial wave coefficients than what has been presented elsewhere.

On the number of Regge trajectories for dual amplitudes

Abstract:Regge poles connect the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes, analytically continued in spin, to the high-energy limit in momentum space. Dual models are expected to have only Regge poles, and string theory suggests there should be an infinite number of them. In this study, we investigate the number of Regge trajectories these models may have. We prove, based solely on crossing symmetry and unitarity, that meromorphic amplitudes, with or without subtractions, cannot produce a reggeizing amplitude if they contain any finite number of Regge trajectories. We argue that this should exclude the existence of such amplitudes altogether. Additionally, we develop and apply a linear programming dual bootstrap method to exclude these amplitudes directly in momentum space.

Abstract:We show that the Veneziano amplitude of string theory is the unique solution to an analytically solvable bootstrap problem. Uniqueness follows from two assumptions: faster than power-law falloff in high-energy scattering and the existence of some infinite sequence in momentum transfer at which higher-spin exchanges cancel. The string amplitude$\unicode{x2013}$including the mass spectrum$\unicode{x2013}$is an output of this bootstrap. If the amplitude merely vanishes at high energies, the solution is a three-parameter family containing the Veneziano, Coon, and hypergeometric amplitudes, and more.

Abstract:A factorized Regge-pole model for deeply virtual Compton scattering is suggested. The use of an effective logarithmic Regge-Pomeron trajectory provides for the description of both ``soft'' (small $|t|$) and ``hard'' (large $|t|$) dynamics. The model contains explicitly the photoproduction and the DIS limits and fits the existing HERA data on deeply virtual Compton scattering.

Abstract:String scattering amplitudes are typically expressed in formal integrals which diverge in physical kinematic regions. Recently the problem of divergence was cured by redefining integration contours. In this paper, we apply the new integration contour to evaluate time-delay of the Veneziano amplitude. Thimble analysis of the new integration contour tells us that infinitely many complex saddles contribute to the new integral. Each complex saddle is interpreted as a string path which enters into the scattering region at different Lorentzian time.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present the α′ -exact background equations of motion of the bosonic chiral string (also known as Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach model), with the spin-two ghost fields integrated out. This is the first instance of a world sheet model in which all corrections are fully determined in a generic curved spacetime. As a concrete cross-check, we find complete agreement between all three-point and a sample of four-point tree-level scattering amplitudes computed using field theory methods and the chiral string prescription. Higher Spin Gravity Amplitudes From Zero-form Charges

Abstract:We examine zero-form charges in Vasiliev's four-dimensional bosonic higher spin gravities. These are classical observables given by integrals over noncommutative twistor space of adjoint combinations of the zero-form master fields, including insertions of delta functions in the deformed oscillators serving as gauge invariant regulators. The regularized charges admit perturbative expansions in terms of multi-linear functionals in the Weyl zero-form, which are Bose symmetric and higher spin invariant by construction, and that can be interpreted as basic building blocks for higher spin gravity amplitudes. We compute two- and three-point functions by attaching external legs given by unfolded bulk-to-boundary propagators, and identify the result with the two- and three-current correlation functions in theories of free conformal scalars and fermions in three dimensions. Modulo assumptions on the structure of the sub-leading corrections, and relying on the generalized Hamiltonian off-shell formulation, we are thus led to propose an expression for the free energy as a sum of suitably normalized zero-form charges

Abstract:Ambitwistor-strings are chiral strings whose targets are spaces of complex massless particles, and whose correlation functions directly lead to simple, compact formulae for scattering amplitudes and loop integrands for massless gauge and gravity theories. This article extends the framework to massive particles in 4d, obtained via a symmetry reduction of higher dimensional massless models based on twistors. The target space of the resulting models turns out to be the phase space of 4d massive particles in a twistorial representation, and the worldsheet theory agrees with the two-twistor string previously introduced by the authors. The paper has been written so as to be largely self-contained. We discuss two interesting classes of massive theories in detail. For gauge theories, the reduction procedure is explicitly adapted to supersymmetric gauge theories on the Coulomb branch. For supergravity theories, the reduction is adapted to give theories obtained via Cremmer, Scherk & Schwartz (CSS) reduction, with broken supersymmetry and massive multiplets. The reduction procedure gives explicit and systematic rules to obtain amplitudes for all these theories and their amplitudes from two compact master formulae that have their origins in 6d based on the polarized scattering equations; in the CSS case the formulae are new, and in both cases their derivation is systematic. The freedom to include mass allows the definition of a loop insertion operator, thereby extending the formulae to 1-loop. Unlike the massless 4d twistorial models, these all display a perfect double copy structure, here incorporating massive particles in the relationship between gauge theory and CSS supergravity amplitudes.
