Abstract:A key issue in making precise predictions in QCD is the uncertainty in setting the renormalization scale $\mu_R$ and thus determining the correct values of the QCD running coupling $\alpha_s(\mu_R^2)$ at each order in the perturbative expansion of a QCD observable. It has often been conventional to simply set the renormalization scale to the typical scale of the process $Q$ and vary it in the range $\mu_R \in [Q/2,2Q]$ in order to estimate the theoretical error. This is the practice of Conventional Scale Setting (CSS). The resulting CSS prediction will however depend on the theorist's choice of renormalization scheme and the resulting pQCD series will diverge factorially. It will also disagree with renormalization scale setting used in QED and electroweak theory thus precluding grand unification. A solution to the renormalization scale-setting problem is offered by the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), which provides a systematic way to eliminate the renormalization scale-and-scheme dependence in perturbative calculations. The PMC method has rigorous theoretical foundations, it satisfies Renormalization Group Invariance (RGI) and preserves all self-consistency conditions derived from the renormalization group. The PMC cancels the renormalon growth, reduces to the Gell-Mann--Low scheme in the $N_C\to 0$ Abelian limit and leads to scale- and scheme-invariant results. The PMC has now been successfully applied to many high-energy processes. In this article we summarize recent developments and results in solving the renormalization scale and scheme ambiguities in perturbative QCD. [full abstract is in the paper].

Abstract:In any calculation in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) a choice needs to be made for the unphysical renormalisation scale, $\mu_R$. The Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie/Principle of Maximum Conformality (BLM/PMC) scale-setting procedure is one proposed method for selecting this scale. In this work we identify three ambiguities in the BLM/PMC procedure itself. Their numerical impact is studied using the example of the total cross-section for $t\bar{t}$ production through Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order in QCD. One ambiguity is the arbitrary choice of the value of the highest-order PMC scale. The numerical impact of this choice on the BLM/PMC prediction for the cross-section is found to be comparable to the impact of the choice of $\mu_R$ in the conventional scale-setting approach. Another ambiguity relates to the definitions of the other PMC scales and is similarly found to have a large impact on the cross-section.

Elimination of QCD Renormalization Scale and Scheme Ambiguities

Abstract:We present results for the thrust distribution in the electron positron annihilation to the three jet process at NNLO in the perturbative conformal window of QCD, as a function of the number of flavors $N_f$. Given the existence of an infrared interacting fixed point in this region, we can compare the Conventional Scale Setting (CSS) and the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC$_\infty$) methods along the entire renormalization group flow from the highest energies to zero energy. We then consider also the QED thrust, obtained as the limit $N_c \rightarrow 0$ of the number of colors and we show analogous comparison. QED in the low energy regime develops an infrared non-interacting fixed point. Using these quantum field theory limits as theoretical laboratories, we arrive at interesting results showing new features of the PMC$_\infty$.

Scaling Behavior of the Quark Propagator in Full Qcd

Abstract:We study the scaling behavior of the quark propagator on two lattices with similar physical volume in Landau gauge with 2 + 1 flavors of dynamical quarks in order to test whether we are close to the continuum limit for these lattices. We use configurations generated with an improved staggered ("Asqtad") action by the MILC collaboration. The calculations are performed on 28(3)x96 lattices with lattice spacing a=0.09 fm and on 20(3)x64 lattices with lattice spacing a = 0.12 fm. We calculate the quark mass function, M(q(2)), and the wave-function renormalization function, Z(q(2)), for a variety of bare quark masses. Comparing the behavior of these functions on the two sets of lattices we find that both Z(q(2)) and M(q(2)) show little sensitivity to the ultraviolet cutoff.

Abstract:A systematic study is made of the non-perturbative effects in quantum chromodynamics. The basic object is the two-point functions of various currents. At large Euclidean momenta q the non-perturbative contributions induce a series in (μ2/q2) where μ is some typical hadronic mass. The terms of this series are shown to be of two distinct types. The first few of them are connected with vacuum fluctuations of large size, and can be consistently accounted for within the Wilson operator expansion. On the other hand, in high orders small-size fluctuations show up and the high-order terms do not reduce (generally speaking) to the vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements of local operators. This signals the breakdown of the operator expansion. The corresponding critical dimension is found. We propose a Borel improvement of the power series. On one hand, it makes the two-point functions less sensitive to high-order terms, and on the other hand, it transforms the standard dispersion representation into a certain integral representation with exponential weight functions. As a result we obtain a set of the sum rules for the observable spectral densities which correlate the resonance properties to a few vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements. As the last bid to specify the sum rules we estimate the matrix elements involved and elaborate several techniques for this purpose.

Abstract:In this work, we give a detailed discussion for QCD factorization involved in the complete chirally enhanced power corrections in the heavy quark limit for B decays to two light pseudoscalar mesons. and present some detailed calculations of radiative corrections at the order of alpha (s). We point out that the infrared finiteness of the vertex corrections in the chirally enhanced power corrections requires twist-3 light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of the light pseudoscalar symmetric. However, even in the symmetric condition. there is also a logarithmic divergence from the end points of the twist-3 LCDAs in the hard spectator scattering. We point out that the decay amplitudes of B --> PP predicted by QCD factorization are really free of the renormalization scale dependence, at least at the order of alpha (s). At last, we briefly compare the QCD factorization with the generalized factorization and PQCD method.

Abstract:The chiral symmetry relation and scaling of the overlap fermions are studied numerically on the quenched lattices at 3 couplings with about the same physical volume. We find that the generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation is satisfied to better than 1% down to the smallest quark mass at m(0)a = 0.006. We also obtain the quark mass from the PCAC relation and the pseudoscalar masses. The renormalization group invariant quark mass is shown to be fairly independent of scale. The pi and p masses at a fixed m(pi)/m(rho) ratio indicate small O(a(2)) corrections. It is found that the critical slowing down sets in abruptly at a very small quark mass close to those of the physical it and d quarks.

The results indicate that the ratios of coupling constants to respective meson mass have a very small dependence on density. Then, an extended Brown-Rho scaling law is conjectured.

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Abstract:We provide the leading near conformal corrections on a cylinder to the scaling dimension of the lowest-lying fixed isospin charge Q operators defined at the lower boundary of the quantum chromodynamics conformal window, Δ ̃Q=Δ ̃Q*+(mσ4πν)2QΔ3B1+(mπ(θ)4πν)4Q23(1−γ)B2+O(mσ4,mπ8,mσ2mπ4). Here, Δ ̃Q/r is the classical ground state energy of the theory on R×Sr3 at fixed isospin charge while Δ ̃Q* is the scaling dimension at the leading order in the large charge expansion. In the conformal limit mσ=mπ=0 , the state-operator correspondence implies Δ ̃Q=Δ ̃Q* . The near-conformal corrections are expressed in powers of the dilaton and pion masses in units of the chiral symmetry breaking scale 4πν with the θ -angle dependence encoded directly in the pion mass. The characteristic Q -scaling is dictated by the quark mass operator anomalous dimension γ and the one characterizing the dilaton potential Δ . Abstract:Familiar factorized descriptions of classic QCD processes such as deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) apply in the limit of very large hard scales, much larger than nonperturbative mass scales and other nonperturbative physical properties like intrinsic transverse momentum. Since many interesting DIS studies occur at kinematic regions where the hard scale, $Q \sim$ 1-2 GeV, is not very much greater than the hadron masses involved, and the Bjorken scaling variable $x_{bj}$ is large, $x_{bj} \gtrsim 0.5$, it is important to examine the boundaries of the most basic factorization assumptions and assess whether improved starting points are needed. Using an idealized field-theoretic model that contains most of the essential elements that a factorization derivation must confront, we retrace the steps of factorization approximations and compare with calculations that keep all kinematics exact. We examine the relative importance of such quantities as the target mass, light quark masses, and intrinsic parton transverse momentum, and argue that a careful accounting of parton virtuality is essential for treating power corrections to collinear factorization. We use our observations to motivate searches for new or enhanced factorization theorems specifically designed to deal with moderately low-$Q$ and large-$x_{bj}$ physics.

Universal scaling and the asymptotic behaviour of Fourier coefficients of the baryon-number density in QCD

Abstract:We discuss the scaling of the Yang-Lee singularity (YLs) and show how the universal scaling can be used to locate phase transitions in QCD. We describe two complementary methods to extract the location of the Yang-Lee singularity from lattice QCD data of the baryon-number density and higher order cumulants of the baryon number, obtained at imaginary chemical potential. The first method (multi-point Padé resummation) is used to determine the Roberge-Weiss phase transition temperature. Our continuum extrapolated result is $T_{RW}=211.1\pm3.1$ MeV. The second method is based on the asymptotic behaviour of the Fourier coefficients of the baryon-number density. We discuss the derivation of a fitting function and demonstrate that the procedure can successfully locate the YLs in the Quark Meson model.

Probing the QCD Critical End Point with Finite-Size Scaling of Net-Baryon Cumulant Ratios

Abstract:The search for the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) critical end point (CEP) is a central focus in heavy-ion physics, as it provides insights into the phase structure of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions. Finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis is applied to explore the critical behavior of cumulant ratios $ C_2/C_1 $, $ C_3/C_2 $, $ C_4/C_2 $, $ C_3/C_1 $, and $ C_4/C_1 $, measured in Au+Au collisions across the Beam Energy Scan (BES) range of 7.7 to 200 GeV. The scaling functions for these ratios reveal non-monotonic patterns near the CEP, where critical fluctuations appear in distinct scaling behavior. A consistent scaling pattern emerges at $\sqrt{s}_{\text{CEP}} = 31.0 \, \text{GeV}$, corresponding to $ \mu_{B,\text{CEP}} \approx 134.3 \, \text{MeV} $ and $ T_{\text{CEP}} \approx 155 \, \text{MeV}$, derived from the freeze-out curve. The FSS analysis shows upward divergence of $ C_2/C_1 $ and $ C_4/C_1 $, and downward divergence of $ C_3/C_2 $ and $ C_4/C_2 $, consistent with theoretical expectations for critical dynamics. These findings validate the robustness of these cumulant ratios as probes for the CEP, offering structured evidence for critical behavior in QCD matter.

A QCD interpretation of the scaling observed in the LHC proton-proton elastic cross-sections at moderate transfer momentum

Abstract:A phenomenological scaling property of the LHC proton-proton elastic scattering cross sections at moderate transfer momentum has been recently observed. The theoretical QCD saturation framework for hard elastic scattering on the proton, which we recall, predicts a strikingly similar scaling property in the same configuration of energy and momentum transfer. This similarity favors a theoretical interpretation where the hard amplitude is the building block of the $pp$ amplitude via unitarization. The values of the scaling exponents favor two QCD saturation approaches where the saturation scale exponent is of order one half of that which is found for hard elastic scattering and deep inelastic processes on the proton.

Interplay of Chiral Transitions in the Standard Model

Abstract:We investigate nonperturbative aspects of the interplay of chiral transitions in the standard model in the course of the renormalization flow. We focus on the chiral symmetry breaking mechanisms provided by the QCD and the electroweak sectors, the latter of which we model by a Higgs-top-bottom Yukawa theory. The interplay becomes quantitatively accessible by accounting for the fluctuation-induced mixing of the electroweak Higgs field with the mesonic composite fields of QCD. In fact, our approach uses dynamical bosonization and treats these scalar fields on the same footing. Varying the QCD scale relative to the Fermi scale we quantify the mutual impact of the symmetry-breaking mechanisms, specifically the departure from the second order quantum phase transition of the pure Yukawa sector in favor of a crossover upon the inclusion of the gauge interactions. This allows to discuss the ``naturalness'' of the standard model in terms of a pseudo-critical exponent which we determine as a function of the ratio of the QCD and the Fermi scale. We also estimate the minimum value of the $W$ boson mass in absence of the Higgs mechanism.

Bridging a Gap Between Continuum-Qcd and Ab Initio Predictions of Hadron Observables

Abstract:Within contemporary hadron physics there are two common methods for determining the momentum-dependence of the interaction between quarks: the top-down approach, which works toward an ab initio computation of the interaction via direct analysis of the gauge-sector gap equations; and the bottom-up scheme, which aims to infer the interaction by fitting data within a well-defined truncation of those equations in the matter sector that are relevant to bound-state properties. We unite these two approaches by demonstrating that the renormalisation-group-invariant running-interaction predicted by contemporary analyses of QCD's gauge sector coincides with that required in order to describe ground-state hadron observables using a nonperturbative truncation of QCD's Dyson–Schwinger equations in the matter sector. This bridges a gap that had lain between nonperturbative continuum-QCD and the ab initio prediction of bound-state properties.

Abstract:The properties of the momentum space quark propagator in Landau gauge are examined for the overlap quark action in quenched lattice QCD. Numerical calculations are done on three lattices with different lattice spacings and similar physical volumes to explore the approach of the quark propagator towards the continuum limit. We have calculated the nonperturbative momentum-dependent wavefunction renormalization function Z(p(2)) and the nonperturbative mass function M(p(2)) for a variety of bare quark masses and extrapolate to the chiral limit. We find the behavior of Z (p(2)) and M(p(2)) are in good agreement for the two finer lattices in the chiral limit. The quark condensate is also calculated.

Abstract:On configurations with 2+1 -flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions, we calculate the RI/(S)MOM renormalization constants (RC) of overlap quark bilinears. Hypercubic (HYP) smearing is used to construct the overlap Dirac operator. We investigate the possible effects of the smearing on discretization errors in the RCs by varying the level of smearing from 0 to 1 and 2. The lattice is of size 323×64 and with lattice spacing 1/a=2.383(9) GeV . The RCs in the MS ̄ scheme at 2 GeV are given at the end, with the uncertainty of ZT reaching ≤1% for the tensor current.
