Abstract:Recent follow-up observations of the 2004 December 27 giant flare of SGR 1806 - 20 have detected a multiple-frequency radio afterglow from 240 MHz to 8.46 GHz, extending in time from a week to about a month after the flare. The angular size of the source has also been measured for the first time. Here we show that this radio afterglow provides the first clear evidence of an energetic blast wave sweeping up its surrounding medium and producing a synchrotron afterglow, the same mechanism as has been established for gamma-ray burst afterglows. The optical afterglow is expected to have been intrinsically as bright as m(R) similar or equal to 13 at t less than or similar to 0.1 days after the flare, but very heavy extinction due to the low Galactic latitude of the source would have made detection difficult. Rapid infrared follow-up observations of giant flares are therefore crucial for low-latitude soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), while for high-latitude SGRs ( e. g., SGR 0526 - 66), rapid follow-up should result in the identification of possible optical afterglows. Rapid multiwavelength follow-up will also provide more detailed information on the early evolution of the fireball, as well as its composition.
Analysis of Short Bursts in SGR 1806-20, 1E 1048-5937 and SGR 0501+4516

Abstract:We analyzed temporal and spectral properties, focusing on the short bursts, for three anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), including SGR 1806-20, 1E 1048-5937 and SGR 0501+4516. Using the data from XMM-Newton, we located the short bursts by Bayesian blocks algorithm. The short bursts' duration distributions for three sources were fitted by two lognormal functions. The spectra of shorter bursts ($< 0.2~\rm s$) and longer bursts ($\geq 0.2~\rm s$) can be well fitted in two blackbody components model or optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung model for SGR 0501+4516. We also found that there is a positive correlation between the burst luminosity and the persistent luminosity with a power law index $\gamma = 1.23 \pm 0.18 $. The energy ratio of this persistent emission to the time averaged short bursts is in the range of $10 - 10^3$, being comparable to the case in Type I X-ray burst.

Abstract:Recently, BeppoSAX and ASCA have reported an unusual resurgence of soft X-ray emission during the afterglows of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828, together with marginal evidence for the existence of Fe-lines in both objects. We consider the implications of the existence of a torus of iron-rich material surrounding the sites of gamma ray bursts as would be expected in the SupraNova model; in particular, we show that the fireball will quickly hit this torus, and bring it to a temperature ~3x10^7 K. Bremsstrahlung emission from the heated up torus will cause a resurgence of the soft X-ray emission with all expected characteristics (flux level, duration and spectral hardening with time) identical to those observed during the reburst. Also, thermal emission from the torus will account for the observed iron line flux. These events are also observable, for instance by new missions such as SWIFT, when beaming away from our line sight makes us miss the main burst, as Fast (soft) X-ray Transients, with durations ~10^3 s, and fluences ~10^-7-10^-4 erg cm^-2. This model provides evidence in favor of the SupraNova model for Gamma Ray Bursts.
Teraelectronvolt emission from the γ-ray burst GRB 190114C

Abstract:Long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous sources of electromagnetic radiation known in the Universe. They arise from outflows of plasma with velocities near the speed of light that are ejected by newly formed neutron stars or black holes (of stellar mass) at cosmological distances<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR2">2</a>. Prompt flashes of megaelectronvolt-energy γ-rays are followed by a longer-lasting afterglow emission in a wide range of energies (from radio waves to gigaelectronvolt γ-rays), which originates from synchrotron radiation generated by energetic electrons in the accompanying shock waves<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR4">4</a>. Although emission of γ-rays at even higher (teraelectronvolt) energies by other radiation mechanisms has been theoretically predicted<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR8">8</a>, it has not been previously detected<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR8">8</a>. Here we report observations of teraelectronvolt emission from the γ-ray burst GRB 190114C. γ-rays were observed in the energy range 0.2–1 teraelectronvolt from about one minute after the burst (at more than 50 standard deviations in the first 20 minutes), revealing a distinct emission component of the afterglow with power comparable to that of the synchrotron component. The observed similarity in the radiated power and temporal behaviour of the teraelectronvolt and X-ray bands points to processes such as inverse Compton upscattering as the mechanism of the teraelectronvolt emission<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR11">11</a>. By contrast, processes such as synchrotron emission by ultrahigh-energy protons<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1750-x#ref-CR13">13</a> are not favoured because of their low radiative efficiency. These results are anticipated to be a step towards a deeper understanding of the physics of GRBs and relativistic shock waves.

Energy of Magnetic Vortices in Rotating Superconductor

Abstract:We carry out a systematic analytic investigation of stationary and cylindrically symmetric vortex configurations for simple models representing an incompressible non-relativistic superconductor in a rigidly rotating background. It is shown that although the magnetic and kinetic contributions to the energy per unit length of such a vortex are separately modified by the background angular velocity, its effect on the total energy per unit length cancels out. For a type II superconductor threaded by a parallel array of such vortices, this result implies that the relevant macroscopic magnetic field strength H will not be equal to the large scale average of the local magnetic induction B (as has previously been suggested) but instead that H will simply be equal to the external London field that characterizes the value of B outside the vortices.

Abstract:Radio afterglows have been detected following two giant flares from soft gamma repeaters (i.e. SGR1900+14, SGR 1806‐20). Abstract:We present the high-energy emission properties of GRB 160509A, from its prompt mission to late afterglow phase. GRB 160509A contains two emission episodes: 0–40 s and 280–420 s after the burst onset ( ). The relatively high fluence of GRB 160509A allows us to establish an evolving spectrum above 100 MeV. During the first emission episode, the >100 MeV spectrum is soft with Γ ≥ 3.0, which can be smoothly connected to keV energies with a Band function with or without a high-energy cutoff. The >100 MeV spectrum rapidly changes to a hard spectrum with Γ ≤ 1.5 after s. The existence of very energetic photons, e.g., a 52 GeV that arrives at s and a 29 GeV that arrives at ks, is hard to reconcile by the synchrotron emission from forward-shock electrons, but is likely due to an inverse-Compton (IC) mechanism (e.g., synchrotron self-Compton emission). A soft spectrum (Γ ∼ 2) between 300 and 1000 s after the burst onset is also found at a significance of about 2 standard deviations, which suggests a different emission mechanism at work for this short period of time. GRB 160509A represents the latest example where IC emission has to be taken into account in explaining the afterglow GeV emission, which had been suggested long before the launch of the Fermi Large Area Telescope.

Abstract:The γ-ray burst (GRB) 060218/SN 2006aj is a peculiar event, with the second lowest redshift, low luminosity, long duration, chromatic lightcurve features, and in particular, the presence of a thermal component in the X-ray and UVoptical spectra. Thanks to detailed temporal and spectral coverage of the Swift observatory, the abundant data allow the GRB prompt emission to be modelled in great detail for the first time. The low flux of prompt UV/optical emission disfavors the conventional internal shock/synchrotron radiation models, which generally predict strong UV/optical emission. Here we show that the unusual prompt emission of GRB 060218 can be produced by inverse-Compton scattering of shock-accelerated relativistic electrons off the detected thermal photons. A pair of (forward plus reverse) shocks form when a relativistic outflow interacts with a preexisting slower shell. The observed γ-ray emission and X-ray emission arise from the reverse-shocked and forward-shocked regions, respectively. A fit to the data requires an initially increasing outflow luminosity, which is consistent with the prediction of the popular collapsar model. Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotube network field effect transistors were fabricated and studied as humidity sensors. Sensing responses were altered by changing the gate voltage. At the open channel state (negative gate voltage), humidity pulse resulted in the decrease of the source-drain current, and, vice versa, the increase in the source-drain current was observed at the positive gate voltage. This effect was explained by the electron-donating nature of water molecules. The operation speed and signal intensity was found to be dependent on the gate voltage polarity. The positive or negative change in current with humidity pulse at zero-gate voltage was found to depend on the previous state of the gate electrode (positive or negative voltage, respectively). Those characteristics were explained by the charge traps in the gate dielectric altering the effective gate voltage, which influenced the operation of field effect transistor.
The first observation of optical pulsations from a soft gamma repeater: SGR 0501+4516

Abstract:We present high-speed optical photometry of the soft gamma repeater SGR 0501+4516, obtained with ULTRACAM on two consecutive nights approximately 4 months after the source was discovered via its gamma-ray bursts. We detect SGR 0501+4516 at a magnitude of i' = 24.4+/-0.1. We present the first measurement of optical pulsations from an SGR, deriving a period of 5.7622+/-0.0003 s, in excellent agreement with the X-ray spin period of the neutron star. We compare the morphologies of the optical pulse profile with the X-ray and infrared pulse profiles; we find that the optical, infrared and harder X-rays share similar double-peaked morphologies, but the softer X-rays exhibit only a single-peaked morphology, indicative of a different origin. The optical pulsations appear to be in phase with the X-ray pulsations and exhibit a root-mean-square pulsed fraction of 52+/-7%, approximately a factor of two greater than in the X-rays. Our results find a natural explanation within the context of the magnetar model for SGRs.

Energy Sources of Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters

Abstract:Quiescence and burst emission and relativistic particle winds of soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) have been widely interpreted to result from ultrastrongly magnetized neutron stars. In this magnetar model, the magnetic energy and gravitational energy of the neutron stars are suggested as the energy sources of all the emission and winds. However, Harding, Contopoulos Kazanas (1999) have shown that the magnetic field should be only 3 x 10^13 G in order to match the characteristic spin-down timescale of SGR 1806-20 and its SNR age. Here we argue that if the magnetic field is indeed so weak, the previously suggested energy sources seem problematic. We further propose a plausible model in which SGR pulsars are young strange stars with superconducting cores and with a poloidal magnetic field of 3 x 10^13 G. In this model, the movement of the flux tubes not only leads to crustal cracking of the stars, giving rise to deconfinement of crustal matter to strange matter, but also to movement of internal magnetic toruses with the flux tubes. The former process will result in burst and quiescence emission and the latter process will produce steady relativistic winds which will power the surrounding supernova remnants.
The Early High-Energy Afterglow Emission from Short GRBs

Abstract:We calculate the high energy afterglow emission from short Gamma-Ray Bursts (SGRBs) in the external shock model. There are two possible components contributing to the high energy afterglow: electron synchrotron emission and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission. We find that for typical parameter values of SGRBs, the early high-energy afterglow emission in 10 MeV-10 GeV is dominated by synchrotron emission. For a burst occurring at redshift z = 0.1, the high-energy emission can be detectable by Fermi LAT if the blast wave has energy E ⩾ 1051 ergs and the fraction of electron energy ɛ e ⩾ 0.1. This provides a possible explanation for the high energy tail of SGRB 081024B.

Abstract:Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) are "magnetars", a small class of slowly spinning neutron stars with extreme surface magnetic fields, ~10^15 gauss. On 2004 December 27, a giant flare was detected from the magnetar SGR 1806-20, the third such event ever recorded. This burst of energy was detected by a variety of instruments and even caused an ionospheric disturbance in the Earth's upper atmosphere recorded around the globe. Here we report the detection of a fading radio afterglow produced by this outburst, with a luminosity 500 times larger than the only other detection of a similar source. From day 6 to day 19 after the flare from SGR 1806-20, a resolved, linearly polarized, radio nebula was seen, expanding at approximately a quarter the speed of light. To create this nebula, at least 4x10^43 ergs of energy must have been emitted by the giant flare in the form of magnetic fields and relativistic particles. The combination of spatially resolved structure and rapid time evolution allows a study in unprecedented detail of a nearby analog to supernovae and gamma-ray bursts.

Semiconductor quantum dot - a quantum light source of multicolor photons with tunable statistics

Abstract:We investigate the intensity correlation properties of single photons emitted from an optically excited single semiconductor quantum dot. The second order temporal coherence function of the photons emitted at various wavelengths is measured as a function of the excitation power. We show experimentally and theoretically, for the first time, that a quantum dot is not only a source of correlated non-classical monochromatic photons but is also a source of correlated non-classical \emph{multicolor} photons with tunable correlation properties. We found that the emitted photon statistics can be varied by the excitation rate from a sub-Poissonian one, where the photons are temporally antibunched, to super-Poissonian, where they are temporally bunched.

Very high-energy gamma rays from GRB 180720B and GRB 190829A with external Compton emission

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) comprise of short, bright, energetic flashes of emission from extragalactic sources followed by a longer afterglow phase of decreased brightness. Recent discoveries of very-high-energy (VHE, $\gtrsim 100$ GeV) afterglow emission from GRB 180720B and GRB 190829A by H.E.S.S. have raised questions regarding the emission mechanism responsible. We interpret these observed late-time emission to be the result of inverse Compton emission of ultra-relativistic electrons in the GRB blastwave in an external radiation field, i.e., external Compton (EC), considering both the wind and interstellar medium scenarios. We present predictions of multiwavelength light curves and energy spectra, ranging from optical to VHE, and include the synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) radiation mechanisms as well. We corrected the EC and SSC model for the $\gamma$-ray attenuation by absorption of photons through their interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL). We compared our results to multiwavelength data and found that EC gives a satisfactory fit for a given set of fixed model parameters for GRB 180720B, whereas SSC result in a better fit for GRB 190829A. For both GRBs a wind environment is preferred over constant density inter-stellar medium, and the Cosmic Microwave Background as the external radiation field. However, with more data and an effective optimisation tool we can find a more robust fit of the model, implying better constraints on the GRB environment and the particle energy requirements for the emission observed at late times. This has consequences for future observations of GRBs at these extreme energies.

XMM-Newton discovery of 2.6 s pulsations in the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1627-41

Abstract:After nearly a decade of quiescence, the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1627-41 reactivated on 2008 May 28 with a bursting episode followed by a slowly decaying enhancement of its persistent emission. To search for the still unknown spin period of this SGR taking advantage of its high flux state, we performed on 2008 September 27-28 a 120 ks long X-ray observation with the XMM-Newton satellite. Pulsations with P = 2.594578(6) s were detected at a higher than 6-sigma confidence level, with a double-peaked pulse profile. The pulsed fraction in the 2-12 keV range is 19% +/- 3% and 24% +/- 3% for the fundamental and the second harmonic, respectively. The observed 2-10 keV flux is 3.4E-13 erg/cm^2/s, still a factor of ~ 5 above the quiescent pre-burst-activation level, and the spectrum is well fitted by an absorbed power law plus blackbody model (photon index Gamma = 0.6, blackbody temperature kT = 0.5 keV, and absorption nH = 1.2E+23 cm^-2). We also detected a shell of diffuse soft X-ray emission which is likely associated with the young supernova remnant G337.0-0.1.

Nature and Nurture: a Model for Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters

Abstract:During supernova explosions, strange stars with almost bare quark surfaces may be formed. Under certain conditions, these stars could be rapidly spun down by the torque exerted by the fossil disks formed from the fallback materials. They may also receive large kicks and hence have large proper-motion velocities. When these strange stars pass through the spherical "Oort" comet cloud formed during the presupernova era, they will capture some small-scale comet clouds and collide with some comet-like objects occasionally. These impacts can account for the repeating bursts as observed from the soft gamma repeaters. According to this picture, it is expected that SGR 1900+14 will become active again during 2004-2005.
Prompt Ultraviolet-to-Soft-X-Ray Emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Application to GRB 031203?

Abstract:We discuss the prompt emission of GRBs, allowing for $\gamma\gamma$ pair production and synchrotron self-absorption. The observed hard spectra suggest heavy pair-loading in GRBs. The re-emission of the generated pairs results in the energy transmission from high-energy gamma-rays to long-wavelength radiation. Due to strong self-absorption, the synchrotron radiation by pairs is in optically thick regime, showing a thermal-like spectral bump in the extreme-ultraviolet/soft X-ray band, other than the peak from the main burst. Recently, the prompt soft X-ray emission of GRB 031203 was detected thanks to the discovery of a delayed dust echo, and it seems to be consistent with the model prediction of a double-peak structure. The confirmation of the thermal-like feature and the double-peak structure by observation would indicate that the dominant radiation mechanism in GRBs is synchrotron rather than inverse-Compton radiation.

Abstract:On 19 March 2008, the northern sky was the stage of a spectacular optical transient that for a few seconds remained visible to the naked eye. The transient was associated with GRB 080319B, a gamma-ray burst at a luminosity distance of about 6 Gpc (standard cosmology), making it the most luminous optical object ever recorded by human kind. We present comprehensive sky monitoring and multi-color optical follow-up observations of GRB 080319B collected by the RAPTOR telescope network covering the development of the explosion and the afterglow before, during, and after the burst. The extremely bright prompt optical emission revealed features that are normally not detectable. The optical and gamma-ray variability during the explosion are correlated, but the optical flux is much greater than can be reconciled with single emission mechanism and a flat gamma-ray spectrum. This extreme optical behavior is best understood as synchrotron self-Compton model (SSC). After a gradual onset of the gamma-ray emission, there is an abrupt rise of the prompt optical flux suggesting that variable self-absorption dominates the early optical light curve. Our simultaneous multi-color optical light curves following the flash show spectral evolution consistent with a rapidly decaying red component due to large angle emission and the emergence of a blue forward shock component from interaction with the surrounding environment. While providing little support for the reverse shock that dominates the early afterglow, these observations strengthen the case for the universal role of the SSC mechanism in generating gamma-ray bursts.
