Abstract:Eternal inflation is a term that describes a number of different phenomena which have been classified by Winitzki. According to Winitzki's classification these phases can be characterized by the topology of the percolating structures in the inflating, "white," region. In this paper we discuss these phases, the transitions between them, and the way they are seen by a "Census Taker"; a hypothetical observer inside the non-inflating, "black," region. We discuss three phases that we call, "black island," "tubular," and "white island." The black island phase is familiar, comprised of rare Coleman De Luccia bubble nucleation events. The Census Taker sees an essentially spherical boundary, described by the conformal field theory of the FRW/CFT correspondence. In the tubular phase the Census Taker sees a complicated infinite genus structure composed of arbitrarily long tubes. The white island phase is even more mysterious from the black side. Surprisingly, when viewed from the non-inflating region this phase resembles a closed, positively curved universe which eventually collapses to a singularity. Nevertheless, pockets of eternal inflation continue forever. In addition there is an "aborted" phase in which no eternal inflation takes place. Rigorous results of Chayes, Chayes, Grannan and Swindle establish the existence of all of these phases, separated by first order transitions, in Mandelbrot percolation, a simple model of eternal inflation.

Abstract:In generic models of cosmological inflation, quantum fluctuations strongly influence the spacetime metric and produce infinitely many regions where the end of inflation (reheating) is delayed until arbitrarily late times. The geometry of the resulting spacetime is highly inhomogeneous on scales of many Hubble sizes. The recently developed string-theoretic picture of the "landscape" presents a similar structure, where an infinite number of de Sitter, flat, and anti-de Sitter universes are nucleated via quantum tunneling. Since observers on the Earth have no information about their location within the eternally inflating universe, the main question in this context is to obtain statistical predictions for quantities observed at a random location. I describe the problems arising within this statistical framework, such as the need for a volume cutoff and the dependence of cutoff schemes on time slicing and on the initial conditions. After reviewing different approaches and mathematical techniques developed in the past two decades for studying these issues, I discuss the existing proposals for extracting predictions and give examples of their applications.

Abstract:The much-discussed swampland conjectures suggest significant constraints on the properties of string theory landscape and on the nature of the multiverse that this landscape can support. The conjectures are especially constraining for models of inflation; in particular, they exclude the existence of de Sitter (dS) vacua. If the conjectures are false and dS vacua do exist, it still appears that their construction in string theory requires a fair amount of fine-tuning, so they may be vastly outnumbered by AdS vacua. Here we explore the multiverse structure suggested by these considerations. We consider two scenarios: (i) a landscape where dS vacua are rare and (ii) a landscape where dS vacua do not exist and the dS potential maxima and saddle points are not flat enough to allow for the usual hilltop inflation, even though slow-roll inflation is possible on the slopes of the potential. We argue that in both scenarios inflation is eternal and all parts of the landscape that can support inflation get represented in the multiverse. The spacetime structure of the multiverse in such models is nontrivial and is rather different from the standard picture.

Abstract:The eternal inflation problem continues to be considered one of standard's cosmology most serious shortcomings. This arises when one considers the effects of "quantum fluctuations" on the zero mode of inflaton field during a Hubble time in the inflationary epoch. In the slow-roll regime it is quite clear that such quantum fluctuations could dwarf the classical rolling down of the inflaton, and with overwhelming probability this prevents inflation from ever ending. When one recognizes that quantum fluctuations can not be taken as synonymous of stochastic fluctuations, but rather intrinsic levels of indefiniteness in the quantities in question, one concludes that the eternal inflation problem simply does not exist. However, the same argument would serve to invalidate the account for the generation of the primordial seeds of cosmic structure as has been amply discussed elsewhere [1,2,3]. In order to do address that issue, one must explain the breaking of homogeneity and isotropy of the situation prevailing during the early inflationary epoch (at both the quantum and classical levels of the description). For that one needs to rely on some additional element, beyond those present in the traditional treatments. The so called spontaneous collapse theories offer a viable candidate for that element, namely the stochastic and spontaneous state reduction characteristic of those proposals possesses the basic features to break those symmetries. In fact, a version of the CSL theory adapted to the cosmological context has been shown to offer a satisfactory account for the origin the seeds of cosmic structure with an adequate power spectrum [2], and will serve as the basis of our analysis. However, once such stochastic collapse is introduced into the theoretical framework the eternal inflation problem has the potential reappear. In this manuscript we explore those issues in detail and discuss an avenue that seems to allow for a satisfactory account for the generation of the primordial inhomogeneities and anisotropies while freeing the theory from the eternal inflation problem.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the relationship between the existence of eternal inflation and the initial conditions leading to inflation. We demonstrate that past and future completion of inflation is related, in that past-incomplete inflation can not be future eternal. Bubble universes nucleating close to the initial conditions hypersurface have the largest Lorentz boosts and experience the highest anisotropy. Consequently, their probability to collide upon formation is one. Thus instead of continuing eternally inflation ends soon after it starts. The difficulty in actualizing eternal inflation originates from the breaking of two underlying symmetries: Lorentz invariance and the general covariance of the theory which lead to an inconsistency of Einstein equations. Eternal inflation may not be eternal.

Directed Percolation Criticality in Eternal Inflation

Abstract:False-vacuum eternal inflation can be described as a random walk on the network of vacua of the string landscape. In this paper we show that the problem can be mapped naturally to a problem of directed percolation. The mapping relies on two general and well-justified approximations for transition rates: 1.~the downward approximation, which neglects ``upward" transitions, as these are generally exponentially suppressed; 2. the dominant decay channel approximation, which capitalizes on the fact that tunneling rates are exponentially staggered. Lacking detailed knowledge of the string landscape, we model the network of vacua as random graphs with arbitrary degree distribution, including Erdös-Rényi and scale-free graphs. As a complementary approach, we also model regions of the landscape as regular lattices, specifically Bethe lattices. We find that the uniform-in-time probabilities proposed in our previous work favor regions of the landscape poised at the directed percolation phase transition. This raises the tantalizing prospect of deriving universal statistical distributions for physical observables, characterized by critical exponents that are insensitive to the details of the underlying landscape. We illustrate this with the cosmological constant, and show that the resulting distribution peaks as a power-law for small positive vacuum energy, with a critical exponent uniquely determined by the random graph universality class.

Eternal Hilltop Inflation

Abstract:We consider eternal inflation in hilltop-type inflation models, favored by current data, in which the scalar field in inflation rolls off of a local maximum of the potential. Unlike chaotic or plateau-type inflation models, in hilltop inflation the region of field space which supports eternal inflation is finite, and the expansion rate $H_{EI}$ during eternal inflation is almost exactly the same as the expansion rate $H_*$ during slow roll inflation. Therefore, in any given Hubble volume, there is a finite and calculable expectation value for the lifetime of the "eternal" inflation phase, during which quantum flucutations dominate over classical field evolution. We show that despite this, inflation in hilltop models is nonetheless eternal in the sense that the volume of the spacetime at any finite time is exponentially dominated by regions which continue to inflate. This is true regardless of the energy scale of inflation, and eternal inflation is supported for inflation at arbitrarily low energy scale.

Abstract:Seiberg and Witten have shown that the non-perturbative stability of string physics on conformally compactified spacetimes is related to the behaviour of the areas and volumes of certain branes as the brane is moved towards infinity. If, as is particularly natural in quantum cosmology, the spatial sections of an accelerating cosmological model are flat and compact, then the spacetime is on the brink of disaster: it turns out that the version of inflationary spacetime geometry with toral spatial sections is marginally stable in the Seiberg-Witten sense. The question is whether the system remains stable before and after Inflation, when the spacetime geometry is distorted away from the inflationary form but still has flat spatial sections. We show that it is indeed possible to avoid disaster, but that requiring stability at all times imposes non-trivial conditions on the spacetime geometry of the early Universe in string cosmology. This in turn allows us to suggest a candidate for the structure which, in the earliest Universe, forbids cosmological singularities.

Abstract:This report describes the case of a 21-year-old heroin user who presented with a 6-day history of decreased vision in her right eye, preceded by 1 week of headache and tender scalp nodules, neck stiffness, and photophobia. A broad infectious workup for acute vision loss was completed, and she was ultimately presumed to have acquired toxoplasmic chorioretinitis (ocular toxoplasmosis). We review the initial workup for chorioretinitis, and the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of ocular toxoplasmosis. Intravenous drug users may be at increased risk of acquired ocular toxoplasmosis.
Inflationary Butterfly Effect: Non-perturbative Dynamics From Small-Scale Features

Abstract:For the first time, we investigate the non-perturbative dynamics of single field inflation with a departure from slow-roll. Using simulations, we find that oscillatory features in the potential can drastically alter the course of inflation, with major phenomenological implications. In certain cases, the entire Universe gets trapped in a forever inflating de Sitter state. In others, only some regions get stuck in a false vacuum, offering an alternative channel for primordial black hole formation. Analogous to the flap of a butterfly, these results show that small-scale phenomena can have profound consequences on the evolution of the entire Universe. This demonstrates the necessity of a non-perturbative approach in the exploration of the small-scale physics of inflation, particularly in the regime relevant for gravitational-wave astronomy.

Abstract:General Relativity is extended into the quantum domain. A thought experiment is explored to derive a specific topological build-up for Planckian space-time. The presented arguments are inspired by Feynman's path integral for superposition and Wheeler's quantum foam of Planck mass mini black holes/wormholes. Paths are fundamental and prime 3-manifolds like T^3, S^1xS^2 and S^3 are used to construct quantum space-time. A physical principle is formulated that causes observed paths to multiply: It takes one to know one. So topological fluctuations on the Planck scale take the form of multiple copies of any homeomorphically distinct path through quantum space-time. The discrete time equation of motion for this topological quantum gravity is derived by counting distinct paths globally. The equation of motion is solved to derive some properties of dark energy and inflation. The dark energy density depends linearly on the number of macroscopic black holes in the universe and is time dependent in a manner consistent with current astrophysical observations, having an effective equation of state w=-1.1 for redshifts smaller than unity. Inflation driven by mini black holes proceeds over n=55 e-foldings, without strong inhomogeneity, a scalar-to-tensor ratio r=ln(7)/n=0.036 and a spectral index n_s=1-r=0.964. A discrete time effect visible in the cosmic microwave background is suggested.

Abstract:This paper extends the recent investigation of the string theory landscape in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0605266" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0605266">hep-th/0605266</a>, where it was found that the decay rate of dS vacua to a collapsing space with a negative vacuum energy can be quite large. The parts of space that experience a decay to a collapsing space, or to a Minkowski vacuum, never return back to dS space. The channels of irreversible vacuum decay serve as sinks for the probability flow. The existence of such sinks is a distinguishing feature of the string theory landscape. We describe relations between several different probability measures for eternal inflation taking into account the existence of the sinks. The local (comoving) description of the inflationary multiverse suffers from the so-called Boltzmann brain (BB) problem unless the probability of the decay to the sinks is sufficiently large. We show that some versions of the global (volume-weighted) description do not have this problem even if one ignores the existence of the sinks. We argue that if the number of different vacua in the landscape is large enough, the anthropic solution of the cosmological constant problem in the string landscape scenario should be valid for a broad class of the probability measures which solve the BB problem. If this is correct, the solution of the cosmological constant problem may be essentially measure-independent. Finally, we describe a simplified approach to the calculations of anthropic probabilities in the landscape, which is less ambitious but also less ambiguous than other methods.

Stability of the Einstein Static Universe in Zero-Point Length Cosmology with Topological Defects

Abstract:Non-singular cosmological models, particularly the idea of emergent cosmology have been explored to describe the non-singular origin of the Universe. Recently, zero-point length cosmology has shown some positive insights into some non-singular aspects of the early Universe. In addition, topological defects are well-known for their major impact on the early Universe and may play a significant role by its presence as a part of the energy content of the Universe. We investigate the stability of the Einstein static phase of the emergent Universe scenario in a generalized framework of zero-point length cosmology in the presence of topological defects in the very early Universe. We derive the modified Friedmann equations, where the energy momentum tensor includes an extra energy density term arising from $n$-dimensional topological defects. We study the possibility of graceful exit of the Einstein Static Universe (ESU) into the standard inflationary cosmology and its stability on the basis of dynamical system analysis. We also study the stability of the ESU against homogeneous scalar perturbation and also its possible graceful exit mechanism. We analyse the stability of the ESU against density, vector and tensor perturbations. Through the stability analysis, it has been shown that indeed the model parameters associated with zero-point length setting and $n$-dimensional topological defects play a visible role in the graceful exit mechanism of the ESU to the standard inflationary Universe. Also, interestingly it is found that there exists a mutual interplay between the zero-point length parameter, and the dimension of topological defect on the stability of the ESU on the basis of inhomogeneous density perturbation. Finally, the stability is also tested against vector and tensor perturbation, which shows that the ESU is stable against such perturbations.

Abstract:A multiverse can arise from landscapes without de Sitter minima. It can be populated during a period of eternal inflation without trans-Planckian field excursions and without flat potentials. This multiverse can explain the values of the cosmological constant and of the weak scale. In the process of proving these statements, we derive a few simple, but counterintuitive results. We show that it is easy to write models of eternal inflation compatible with the distance and refined de Sitter conjectures. Secondly, tunneling transitions that move fields from a lower-energy vacuum to a higher-energy vacuum and generate baby universes are possible, and occur during eternal inflation. Abstract:We present a framework in which well-defined predictions are obtained in an eternally inflating multiverse, based on the principles of quantum mechanics. We show that the entire multiverse is described purely from the viewpoint of a single "observer," who describes the world as a quantum state defined on his/her past light cones bounded by the (stretched) apparent horizons. We find that quantum mechanics plays an essential role in regulating infinities. The framework is "gauge invariant," i.e. predictions do not depend on how spacetime is parametrized, as it should be in a theory of quantum gravity. Our framework provides a fully unified treatment of quantum measurement processes and the multiverse. We conclude that the eternally inflating multiverse and many worlds in quantum mechanics are the same. Other important implications include: global spacetime can be viewed as a derived concept; the multiverse is a transient phenomenon during the world relaxing into a supersymmetric Minkowski state. We also present a theory of "initial conditions" for the multiverse. By extrapolating our framework to the extreme, we arrive at a picture that the entire multiverse is a fluctuation in the stationary, fractal "mega-multiverse," in which an infinite sequence of multiverse productions occurs. The framework discussed here does not suffer from problems/paradoxes plaguing other measures proposed earlier, such as the youngness paradox, the Boltzmann brain problem, and a peculiar "end" of time.

Abstract:We identify a minisuperspace of complex deformations of ABJM theory for which the partition function specifies the amplitude of an eternally inflating universe. The boundary theory predicts that the bosonic bulk is effectively in the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary state, with a subleading 'tunneling' contribution. This holographic model of inflation also reveals a close connection between the swampland distance and cobordism conjectures, and the condition for the asymptotic wave function to predict classical behavior in geometry and fields.

Abstract:We investigate the validity of the assertion that eternal inflation populates the landscape of string theory. We verify that bubble solutions do not satisfy the Klein Gordon equation for the landscape potential. Solutions to the landscape potential within the formalism of quantum cosmology are Anderson localized wavefunctions. Those are inconsistent with inflating bubble solutions. The physical reasons behind the failure of a relation between eternal inflation and the landscape are rooted in quantum phenomena such as interference between wavefunction concentrated around the various vacua in the landscape.
