Abstract:Purpose of review To discuss the anesthetic considerations of various procedures now performed by the interventional pulmonologist. With recent technological advances, many of these procedures represent acceptable alternatives to the invasive surgical procedures. For example, the placement of endobronchial valves can substitute for lung reduction surgery and can greatly reduce the postoperative recovery period. However, many of these complex procedures require anesthesia services. The nature and indication for the procedure as well as the patient's overall health will have an impact on the anesthetic choice. Recent findings New studies have documented common complications from interventional pulmonology procedures and recent ways to avoid these complications have been suggested. Strategies to avoid obstruction, bleeding, pneumothorax and air embolism are discussed in this article. Potential benefits of high frequency jet ventilation in reducing airway pressures and, perhaps, barotraumas are cited. Novel interventional pulmonary procedures are described. Summary As the array of diagnostic and therapeutic pulmonary interventions is expanding, the types of anesthetic techniques and ventilatory modes are varying to fit the procedural requirements. Some pulmonary procedures are best accomplished in the lightly sedated patient, who is breathing spontaneously, whereas procedures that use the working channel of a rigid bronchoscope are better performed in the patient under general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation that often use jet ventilation to minimize respiratory movements.

Abstract:Separation distance between nodes is an important index in characterizing the optimum transmission range, the most probable Euclidean distance between two random selected nodes, the node degree and the network connectivity of wireless ad hoc networks. However, because nodes are randomly deployed, the separation distances between nodes in the wireless ad hoc networks are also random. Thus, in this paper, we present methodologies to analyze three distance-related probability distributions: the distribution of the distance to the k-th nearest neighbor, the distribution of the distance between two random selected nodes and the joint distribution of the distances between nodes and a common reference node

Abstract:This is a pedagogical account on reaction-diffusion systems and their relationship with integrable quantum spin chains. Reaction-diffusion systems are paradigmatic examples of non-equilibrium systems. Their long-time behaviour is strongly influenced through fluctuation effects in low dimensions which renders the habitual mean-field cinetic equations inapplicable. Starting from the master equation rewritten as a Schrödinger equation with imaginary time, the associated quantum hamiltonian of certain one-dimensional reaction-diffusion models is closely related to integrable magnetic chains. The relationship with the Hecke algebra and its quotients allows to identify integrable reaction-diffusion models and, through the Baxterization procedure, relate them to the solutions of Yang-Baxter equations which can be solved via the Bethe ansatz. Methods such as spectral and partial integrability, free fermions, similarity transformations or diffusion algebras are reviewed, with several concrete examples treated explicitly. An outlook on how the recently-introduced concept of local scale invariance might become useful in the description of non-equilibrium ageing phenomena is presented, with particular emphasis on the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics.

Diffusion Processes in Phase Spaces and Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:A diffusion process for charge distributions in a phase space is examined. The corresponding charge moves in a force field and under an action of a random field. There are the diffusion motions for coordinates and for momenta. In our model, an inner state of the charge is defined by a complex vector. The vector rotates with a great constant angular velocity with respect to the proper time of the charge. A state of the diffusion process is a (complex-valued) wave function on the phase space. As in quantum mechanics, we assume that, for the wave functions, the superposition principle holds. The diffusion process averages out vectors of inner states from different points of the phase space. A differential equation for this diffusion process is founded and examined. We demonstrate that the motion (described by this process) decomposes into a fast motion and a slow motion. The fast motion reduces an arbitrary wave function to a function from a subspace whose elements are parameterized by complex-valued functions of coordinates. The slow motion occurs in this subspace and it is described by the Schr\''odinger equation. The parameters of the suggested model are estimated. The duration of the fast motion is of order $10^{-11}$ s.

Scale invariance and dynamic phase transitions in diffusion-limited reactions

Abstract:Many systems that can be described in terms of diffusion-limited `chemical' reactions display non-equilibrium continuous transitions separating active from inactive, absorbing states, where stochastic fluctuations cease entirely. Their critical properties can be analyzed via a path-integral representation of the corresponding classical master equation, and the dynamical renormalization group. An overview over the ensuing universality classes in single-species processes is given, and generalizations to reactions with multiple particle species are discussed as well. The generic case is represented by the processes A <-> A + A, and A -> 0, which map onto Reggeon field theory with the critical exponents of directed percolation (DP). For branching and annihilating random walks (BARW) A -> (m+1) A and A + A -> 0, the mean-field rate equation predicts an active state only. Yet BARW with odd m display a DP transition for d <= 2. For even offspring number m, the particle number parity is conserved locally. Below d_c' = 4/3, this leads to the emergence of an inactive phase that is characterized by the power laws of the pair annihilation process. The critical exponents at the transition are those of the `parity-conserving' (PC) universality class. For local processes without memory, competing pair or triplet annihilation and fission reactions k A -> (k - l) A, k A -> (k+m)A with k=2,3 appear to yield the only other universality classes not described by mean-field theory. In these reactions, site occupation number restrictions play a crucial role.

Abstract:Many continuous reaction-diffusion models on $\mathbb{Z}$ (annihilating or coalescing random walks, exclusion processes, voter models) admit a rich set of Markov duality functions which determine the single time distribution. A common feature of these models is that their generators are given by sums of two-site idempotent operators. In this paper, we classify all continuous time Markov processes on $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{Z}}$ whose generators have this property, although to simplify the calculations we only consider models with equal left and right jumping rates. The classification leads to six familiar models and three exceptional models. The generators of all but the exceptional models turn out to belong to an infinite dimensional Hecke algebra, and the duality functions appear as spanning vectors for small-dimensional irreducible representations of this Hecke algebra. A second classification explores generators built from two site operators satisfying the Hecke algebra relations. The duality functions are intertwiners between configuration and co-ordinate representations of Hecke algebras, which results in a novel co-ordinate representations of the Hecke algebra. The standard Baxterisation procedure leads to new solutions of the Young-Baxter equation corresponding to particle systems which do not preserve the number of particles.

Abstract:We consider the quantum reaction-diffusion dynamics in $d$ spatial dimensions of a Fermi gas subject to binary annihilation reactions $A+A \to \emptyset$. These systems display collective nonequilibrium long-time behavior, which is signalled by an algebraic decay of the particle density. Building on the Keldysh formalism, we devise a field theoretical approach for the reaction-limited regime, where annihilation reactions are scarce. By means of a perturbative expansion of the dissipative interaction, we derive a description in terms of a large-scale universal kinetic equation. Our approach shows how the time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensemble assumption, which is often employed for treating low-dimensional nonequilibrium systems, emerges from systematic diagrammatics. It also allows to exactly compute -- for arbitrary spatial dimension -- the decay exponent of the particle density. The latter is based on the large-scale description of the quantum dynamics and it differs from the mean-field prediction even in dimension larger than one. We moreover consider spatially inhomogeneous setups involving an external potential. In confined systems the density decay is accelerated towards the mean-field algebraic behavior, while for deconfined scenarios the power-law decay is replaced by a slower non-algebraic decay.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum reaction-diffusion dynamics of fermionic particles which coherently hop in a one-dimensional lattice and undergo annihilation reactions. The latter are modelled as dissipative processes which involve losses of pairs $2A \to \emptyset$, triplets $3A \to \emptyset$, and quadruplets $4A \to \emptyset$ of neighbouring particles. When considering classical particles, the corresponding decay of their density in time follows an asymptotic power-law behavior. The associated exponent in one dimension is different from the mean-field prediction whenever diffusive mixing is not too strong and spatial correlations are relevant. This specifically applies to $2A\to \emptyset$, while the mean-field power-law prediction just acquires a logarithmic correction for $3A \to \emptyset$ and is exact for $4A \to \emptyset$. A mean-field approach is also valid, for all the three processes, when the diffusive mixing is strong, i.e., in the so-called reaction-limited regime. Here, we show that the picture is different for quantum systems. We consider the quantum reaction-limited regime and we show that for all the three processes power-law behavior beyond mean field is present as a consequence of quantum coherences, which are not related to space dimensionality. The decay in $3A\to \emptyset$ is further, highly intricate, since the power-law behavior therein only appears within an intermediate time window, while at long times the density decay is not power-law. Our results show that emergent critical behavior in quantum dynamics has a markedly different origin, based on quantum coherences, to that applying to classical critical phenomena, which is, instead, solely determined by the relevance of spatial correlations.

Anomalous reaction-diffusion equations for linear reactions

Abstract:Deriving evolution equations accounting for both anomalous diffusion and reactions is notoriously difficult, even in the simplest cases. In contrast to normal diffusion, reaction kinetics cannot be incorporated into evolution equations modeling subdiffusion by merely adding reaction terms to the equations describing spatial movement. A series of previous works derived fractional reaction-diffusion equations for the spatiotemporal evolution of particles undergoing subdiffusion in one space dimension with linear reactions between a finite number of discrete states. In this paper, we first give a short and elementary proof of these previous results. We then show how this argument gives the evolution equations for more general cases, including subdiffusion following any fractional Fokker-Planck equation in an arbitrary $d$-dimensional spatial domain with time-dependent reactions between infinitely many discrete states. In contrast to previous works which employed a variety of technical mathematical methods, our analysis reveals that the evolution equations follow from (i) the probabilistic independence of the stochastic spatial and discrete processes describing a single particle and (ii) the linearity of the integro-differential operators describing spatial movement. We also apply our results to systems combining reactions with superdiffusion.

Such reactions involve binary annihilation ($A + A \to \emptyset$) and coagulation ($A + A \to A$) of particles at distance $d$. We consider the reaction-limited regime, where dissipative reactions take place at a rate that is small compared to that of coherent hopping. In classical reaction-diffusion systems, this regime is correctly captured by the mean-field approximation. In quantum reaction-diffusion systems, for non-interacting fermionic systems, the reaction-limited regime recently attracted considerable attention because it has been shown to give universal power law decay beyond mean-field for the density of particles as a function of time. Here, we address the question whether such universal behavior is present also in the case of the non-interacting Bose gas. We show that beyond mean-field density decay for bosons is possible only for reactions that allow for destructive interference of different decay channels. Furthermore, we study an absorbing-state phase transition induced by the competition between branching $A\to A+A$, decay $A\to \emptyset$ and coagulation $A+A\to A$. We find a stationary phase-diagram, where a first and a second-order transition line meet at a bicritical point which is described by tricritical directed percolation. These results show that quantum statistics significantly impact on both the stationary and the dynamical universal behavior of quantum reaction-diffusion systems.

Abstract:Reaction-diffusion equations are widely used as the governing evolution equations for modeling many physical, chemical, and biological processes. Here we derive reaction-diffusion equations to model transport with reactions on a one-dimensional domain that is evolving. The model equations, which have been derived from generalized continuous time random walks, can incorporate complexities such as subdiffusive transport and inhomogeneous domain stretching and shrinking. A method for constructing analytic expressions for short time moments of the position of the particles is developed and moments calculated from this approach are shown to compare favourably with results from random walk simulations and numerical integration of the reaction transport equation. The results show the important role played by the initial condition. In particular, it strongly affects the time dependence of the moments in the short time regime by introducing additional drift and diffusion terms. We also discuss how our reaction transport equation could be applied to study the spreading of a population on an evolving interface.

Abstract:We consider the coagulation dynamics A+A -> A and the annihilation dynamics A+A -> 0 for particles moving subdiffusively in one dimension, both on a lattice and in a continuum. The analysis combines the "anomalous kinetics" and "anomalous diffusion" problems, each of which leads to interesting dynamics separately and to even more interesting dynamics in combination. We calculate both short-time and long-time concentrations, and compare and contrast the continuous and discrete cases. Our analysis is based on the fractional diffusion equation and its discrete analog.

Abstract:By means of laboratory experiment I examine the relation between fairness judgments made `behind the veil of ignorance' and actual behavior in a model situation of income inequality. As the evidence shows, when material self-interest is at stake vast majority of subjects tends to abandon the fairness norm. Rather small regard for efficiency is present in the data. Furthermore, as low income players go through a sequence of games against high earners and experience changes in income disparity, the history effect proves to override structural characteristics of the redistribution game.

Abstract:The study of chemical reactions in environments under nonequilibrium conditions has been of interest recently in a variety of contexts, including current-induced reactions in molecular junctions and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. In this work, we outline a fully quantum mechanical, numerically exact approach to describe chemical reaction rates in such nonequilibrium situations. The approach is based on an extension of the flux correlation function formalism to nonequilibrium conditions and uses a mixed real and imaginary time hierarchical equations of motion approach for the calculation of rate constants. As a specific example, we investigate current-induced intramolecular proton transfer reactions in a molecular junction for different applied bias voltages and molecule-lead coupling strengths.

Kinetics of Quantum Reaction-Diffusion systems

Abstract:We discuss many-body fermionic and bosonic systems subject to dissipative particle losses in arbitrary spatial dimensions $d$, within the Keldysh path-integral formulation of the quantum master equation. This open quantum dynamics represents a generalisation of classical reaction-diffusion dynamics to the quantum realm. We first show how initial conditions can be introduced in the Keldysh path integral via boundary terms. We then study binary annihilation reactions $A+A\to\emptyset$, for which we derive a Boltzmann-like kinetic equation. The ensuing algebraic decay in time for the particle density depends on the particle statistics. In order to model possible experimental implementations with cold atoms, for fermions in $d=1$ we further discuss inhomogeneous cases involving the presence of a trapping potential. In this context, we quantify the irreversibility of the dynamics studying the time evolution of the system entropy for different quenches of the trapping potential. We find that the system entropy features algebraic decay for confining quenches, while it saturates in deconfined scenarios.

Universal limiting behaviour of reaction-diffusion systems with conservation laws

Abstract:Making sense of complex inhomogeneous systems composed of many interacting species is a grand challenge that pervades basically all natural sciences. Phase separation and pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems have largely been studied as two separate paradigms. Here we show that in reaction-diffusion systems composed of many species, the presence of a conservation law constrains the evolution of the conserved quantity to be governed by a Cahn-Hilliard-like equation. This establishes a direct link with the paradigm of coexistence and recent "active" field theories. Hence, even for complex many-species systems a dramatically simplified but accurate description emerges over coarse spatio-temporal scales. Using the nullcline (the line of homogeneous steady states) as the central motif, we develop a geometrical framework through endowing chemical space with a basis and suitable coordinates. This framework allows us to capture and understand the effect of eliminating fast non-conserved degrees of freedom, and to explicitly construct coefficients of the coarse field theory. We expect that the theory we develop here will be particularly relevant to advance our understanding of biomolecular condensates.

Abstract:We study general linear transport-reaction systems on an arbitrary dimensional hypercube with periodic boundary conditions. Transport-reaction systems are often used to model the finite speed movement and interaction of particles, bacteria or animals. We first show a weak spectral mapping theorem and demonstrate its' application. Secondly, we introduce a certain class of so-called hyperbolic instabilities, which provide a natural framework for transport-driven instabilities on one-dimensional domains: They are either Turing patterns or increasingly oscillating hyperbolic instabilities. A new algebraic condition for the existence of Turing patterns is obtained as a side-product.

Abstract:Starting with the quantum Liouville equation, we write the density operator as the product of elements respectively in the left and right ideals of an operator algebra and find that the Schrodinger picture may be expressed through two representation independent algebraic forms in terms of the density and phase operators. These forms are respectively the continuity equation, which involves the commutator of the Hamiltonian with the density operator, and an equation for the time development of the phase operator that involves the anti-commutator of the Hamiltonian with this density operator. We show that this latter equation plays two important roles: (i) it expresses the conservation of energy in a system where energy is well defined and (ii) it provides a simple way to evaluate the gauge changes that occur in the Aharonov-Bohm, the Aharonov-Casher, and Berry phase effects. Both these operator (i.e. purely algebraic) equations also allow us to re-examine the Bohm interpretation, showing that it is in fact possible to construct Bohm interpretations in representations other than the x-representation. We discuss the meaning of the Bohm interpretation in the light of these new results in terms of non-commutative structures and this enables us to clarify its relation to standard quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We investigate three different methods to tackle the problem of diffusion-limited reactions (annihilation) of hard-core classical particles in one dimension. We first extend an approach devised by Lushnikov and calculate for a single species the asymptotic long-time and/or large distance behavior of the two-point correlation function. Based on a work by Grynberg et al., which was developed to treat stochastic adsorption-desorption models, we provide in a second step the exact two-point correlation function (both for one and two-time) of Lushnikov's model. We then propose a new formulation of the problem in terms of path integrals for pseudo-fermions. This formalism can be used to advantage in the multi-species case, specially when applying perturbative renormalization group techniques.
