Abstract:The recently discussed notion of geometric entropy is shown to be related to earlier calculations of thermal effects in Rindler space. The evaluation is extended to de Sitter space and to a two-dimensional black hole.

Abstract:We study different entropies for coherent states representing the geometry of spherically symmetric compact systems. We show that the thermodynamic entropy reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking result in the presence of thermal modes at the Hawking temperature if the object is a black hole and saturates the Bekenstein bound for more general compact objects. We also analyse the information entropy of the quantum coherent state without radiation and find further support against the singular Schwarzschild geometry.

Abstract:We discuss the logic of, and some puzzles in, the various approaches to thermodynamics of gravitational systems. In particular the blackhole, deSitter (dS), black hole in dS (SdS) and in Anti-deSitter SAdS backgrounds are considered. After reviewing the original calculations of Hawking and Gibbons we discuss an alternative Hamiltonian method. This justifies the lowest order Euclidean calculation but is free of the problems associated with the latter when going to higher orders. To conclude we address the sign issue in dS thermodynamics.

Abstract:We calculate the vacuum entanglement entropy of Maxwell theory in a class of curved spacetimes by Kaluza-Klein reduction of the theory onto a two-dimensional base manifold. Using two-dimensional duality, we express the geometric entropy of the electromagnetic field as the entropy of a tower of scalar fields, constant electric and magnetic fluxes, and a contact term, whose leading-order divergence was discovered by Kabat. The complete contact term takes the form of one negative scalar degree of freedom confined to the entangling surface. We show that the geometric entropy agrees with a statistical definition of entanglement entropy that includes edge modes: classical solutions determined by their boundary values on the entangling surface. This resolves a long-standing puzzle about the statistical interpretation of the contact term in the entanglement entropy. We discuss the implications of this negative term for black hole thermodynamics and the renormalization of Newton’s constant.

De Sitter entropy as holographic entanglement entropy

Abstract:We review the results of refs. [1,2], in which the entanglement entropy in spaces with horizons, such as Rindler or de Sitter space, is computed using holography. This is achieved through an appropriate slicing of anti-de Sitter space and the implementation of a UV cutoff. When the entangling surface coincides with the horizon of the boundary metric, the entanglement entropy can be identified with the standard gravitational entropy of the space. For this to hold, the effective Newton's constant must be defined appropriately by absorbing the UV cutoff. Conversely, the UV cutoff can be expressed in terms of the effective Planck mass and the number of degrees of freedom of the dual theory. For de Sitter space, the entropy is equal to the Wald entropy for an effective action that includes the higher-curvature terms associated with the conformal anomaly. The entanglement entropy takes the expected form of the de Sitter entropy, including logarithmic corrections.

Black hole geometrothermodynamics and critical phenomena: a look from Tsallis entropy-based perspective

Abstract:We analyze geometrothermodynamics of charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes with a global monopole in the framework of Tsallis statistics. The latter arises from a non-additive generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy, which is still recovered as a particular sub-case. We examine the effects of Tsallis entropy on small-large black holes phase-transitions and critical exponents, comparing the results with the liquid-gas change of phase occurring in van der Waals fluids. We also discuss some physical constraints on Tsallis parameter and the impact on sparsity of BH radiation. Thermodynamic curvature behavior is then explored from a geometric perspective within Ruppeiner formalism on the $S-P$ coordinate space. Similar considerations are extended to charged $(2+1)$-dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes by computing the entropy-pressure and entropy volume corrected curvatures. Our analysis shows that Tsallis prescription has non-trivial implications on black hole geometrothermodynamics, emphasizing the role of non-additive entropy on the correspondence between black holes and van der Waals systems.

Entropy Bounds in $R\times S^3$ Geometries

Abstract:Exact calculations are given for the Casimir energy for various fields in $R\times S^3$ geometry. The Green's function method naturally gives a result in a form convenient in the high-temperature limit, while the statistical mechanical approach gives a form convenient for low temperatures. The equivalence of these two representations is demonstrated. Some discrepancies with previous work are noted. In no case, even for ${\cal N}=4$ SUSY, is the ratio of entropy to energy found to be bounded. This deviation, however, occurs for low temperature, where the equilibrium approach may not be relevant. The same methods are used to calculate the energy and free energy for the TE modes in a half-Einstein universe bounded by a perfectly conducting 2-sphere.

Abstract:We compute the gravitational entropy of 'spherical Rindler space', a time-dependent, spherically symmetric generalization of ordinary Rindler space, defined with reference to a family of observers traveling along non-parallel, accelerated trajectories. All these observers are causally disconnected from a spherical region H (a 'hole') located at the origin of Minkowski space. The entropy evaluates to S = A/4G, where A is the area of the spherical acceleration horizon, which coincides with the boundary of H. We propose that S is the entropy of entanglement between quantum gravitational degrees of freedom supporting the interior and the exterior of the sphere H.

Abstract:Motivated by the known mathematical and physical problems arising from the current mathematical formalization of the physical spatio-temporal continuum, as a substantial technical clarification of our earlier attempt, the aim in this paper is twofold. Firstly, by interpreting Chaitin's variant of Gödel's first incompleteness theorem as an inherent uncertainty or fuzziness present in the set of real numbers, a set-theoretic entropy is assigned to it using the Kullback--Leibler relative entropy of a pair of Riemannian manifolds. Then exploiting the non-negativity of this relative entropy an abstract Hawking-like area theorem is derived. Secondly, by analyzing Noether's theorem on symmetries and conserved quantities, we argue that whenever the four dimensional space-time continuum containing a black hole is modeled by the set of real numbers in the mathematical formulation of general relativity, the hidden set-theoretic entropy of this latter structure reveals itself as the entropy of the black hole (proportional to the area of its ``instantaneous'' event horizon), indicating that this apparently physical quantity might have a pure set-theoretic origin, too.

Abstract:We analyze the equilibrium space of an ideal gas using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics. We introduce the concept of thermodynamic geodesics to show that the equilibrium space around a particular initial state can be divided into two regions, one that can be reached using thermodynamic geodesics and the second one forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, we show that, along thermodynamic geodesics, entropy is a linear function of the affine parameter, indicating that it can be used as a time parameter with a particular arrow of time determined by the direction in which entropy increases. We argue that entropy can also be interpreted locally as time in the case of any thermodynamic system in equilibrium and systems described within the scope of linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:Chandrasekaran, Penington and Witten (CPW) used the crossed product construction in modular theory to associate an entropy with the algebra of observables in the Schwarzschild black hole exterior. This entropy was shown to equal the generalized entropy modulo a constant. They also proved a version of the generalized second law (GSL) in Einstein gravity. We summarize these developments and our generalization of these results to static black holes in an arbitrary diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity [1] — this article is a summary of that work and is based on a talk at the QGatRRI conference in Sep.2023. The algebra entropy again equals the generalized entropy modulo a constant where the generalized entropy now contains the Wald entropy. A version of the GSL follows by employing the arguments of CPW to this case.

Geometry-Information Duality: Quantum Entanglement Contributions to Gravitational Dynamics

Abstract:We propose a fundamental duality between the geometric properties of spacetime and the informational content of quantum fields. Specifically, we establish that the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the entanglement entropy of quantum states, with geometric invariants mapping to informational measures. This framework modifies Einstein's field equations by introducing an informational stress-energy tensor derived from quantum entanglement entropy. Our findings have implications for black hole thermodynamics, cosmology, and quantum gravity, suggesting that quantum information fundamentally shapes the structure of spacetime. We incorporate this informational stress-energy tensor into Einstein's field equations, leading to modified spacetime geometry, particularly in regimes of strong gravitational fields, such as near black holes. We compute corrections to Newton's constant (G) due to entanglement entropy contributions from various quantum fields and explore the consequences for black hole thermodynamics and cosmology. These corrections include explicit dependence on fundamental constants (h-bar, c, and k_B), ensuring dimensional consistency in our calculations. Our results indicate that quantum information plays a crucial role in gravitational dynamics, providing new insights into the nature of spacetime and potential solutions to long-standing challenges in quantum gravity.

Abstract:Here the Weyl curvature hypothesis is examined using the gravitational entropy (GE). We have considered the family of C-metric accelerating black holes and evaluated their corresponding gravitational entropy. Then we studied the GE in some isotropic and anisotropic cosmologies utilizing the definition proposed by Clifton, Ellis, and Tavakol, where the Bel-Robinson tensor is used to determine the energy-momentum tensor of the free gravitational field. We checked whether, in the vicinity of the initial cosmic singularity, the ratio of the energy density of free gravity to that of matter density goes to zero or not. We showed that whenever this is true, the gravitational entropy increases monotonically with the structure formation of the universe and discussed the conditions of validity for the Weyl curvature hypothesis. Subsequently, the next part of the thesis deals with the validity of two different proposals of gravitational entropy (GE) in traversable wormhole systems. We found that the GE proposals do provide us with a consistent measure of GE in several wormhole solutions. In the later portion of the thesis, we examined the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) in an expanding FRW universe filled with different variants of the Chaplygin gas. Lastly, we studied the evolution of the FRW universe in the presence of variable modified Chaplygin gas and obtained its temperature and other parameters as a function of the redshift. Finally, the thesis is concluded.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the thermal properties of black holes using a new class of generalized entropy functions [K. Ourabah, Class. Quantum Grav., 41, 015010 (2024)]. At the fundamental level, these entropic forms are associated with alternative gravitational laws, within an entropic gravity framework. Our investigation revolves around three distinct entropy functions associated with the Yukawa Potential Correction, Non-local Gravity Correction, and Gradient Field Gravity Correction. Through comparative analysis, we study how such entropic constructs impact the thermodynamic behavior of black holes. For each case, we derive the stability thermodynamic conditions associated with the respective entropic constructs.

Relative Entropy from Coherent States in Black Hole Thermodynamics and Cosmology

Abstract:The aim of this work is to study the role of relative entropy in the thermodynamics of black holes and cosmological horizons. We adapt some recent results on the relative entropy of coherent excitations of the vacuum, to find the variation of generalised entropy of static and dynamical black holes and for cosmological horizons. We review the argument for static black holes by Hollands and Ishibashi (2019) with simple modifications. We link the variation of relative entropy to the growth of the horizon using a conservation law for the stress-energy tensor, and we recover the known results. We then study the application of the same framework to the case of dynamical horizons. We study in detail the case of Vaidya spacetime, and we find that a notion of black hole entropy naturally emerges, equals to one-fourth of the area of the dynamical horizon. In the case of dynamical black holes we find an additional term, which is not present in the static case, and that represents the work done on the black hole. We finally show in a simple case that it is possible to follow the same scheme to assign an entropy to the horizons emerging in cosmological scenarios.

On the Hausdorff dimension of geodesics that diverge on average

Abstract:In this article we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of geodesic directions that are recurrent and diverge on average coincides with the entropy at infinity of the geodesic flow for any complete, pinched negatively curved Riemannian manifold. We derive an interesting consequence from this result, we prove that the entropy of a {\sigma}-finite, ergodic and conservative infinite invariant measure is bounded from above by the entropy at infinity of the geodesic flow.

Abstract:Geometric quantum mechanics, through its differential-geometric underpinning, provides additional tools of analysis and interpretation that bring quantum mechanics closer to classical mechanics: state spaces in both are equipped with symplectic geometry. This opens the door to revisiting foundational questions and issues, such as the nature of quantum entropy, from a geometric perspective. Central to this is the concept of geometric quantum state -- the probability measure on a system's space of pure states. This space's continuity leads us to introduce two analysis tools, inspired by Renyi's information theory, to characterize and quantify fundamental properties of geometric quantum states: the quantum information dimension that is the rate of geometric quantum state compression and the dimensional geometric entropy that monitors information stored in quantum states. We recount their classical definitions, information-theoretic meanings, and physical interpretations, and adapt them to quantum systems via the geometric approach. We then explicitly compute them in various examples and classes of quantum system. We conclude commenting on future directions for information in geometric quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We study thermodynamic geometry of certain black holes and black branes with and without generalized uncertainty principle or stringy $ \alpha^{\prime} $-corrections to the entropy. From this perspective, we analyze Ruppenier geometry of Reissner-Nordström black holes and show that it is well defined and corresponds to a non-interacting statistical system. We investigate that the Weinhold geometry of dilatonic black holes is regular everywhere and that of large mass Reissner-Nordström black holes in the Poincaré patch of $ AdS_4 $ contains certain narrow range of thermodynamically unstable regions in the statespace. We obtain that the generalized uncertainty principle corrected Ruppenier geometry of Reissner-Nordström black holes correspond to a non-interacting statistical system unlike the magnetically charged black holes. We show that the stringy $ \alpha^{\prime} $-corrections do not introduce singularity in the statespace geometry of non-supersymmetric extremal black holes in $ D= 4 $. Interestingly, the degree of scalar curvature and that of the determinant of this Ruppenier geometry can be written as an integer multiple of the order of $ \alpha^{\prime} $-correction. We further show that the statespace geometry of Gauss- Bonnet corrected supersymmetric extremal black holes in $ D=4 $ as well as non-extremal $D_1D_5$ and $D_2D_6NS_5$ black branes in $ D=10 $ is regular everywhere. Furthermore, the thermodynamic geometry of four dimensional rotating Kerr-Newman extremal black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory is everywhere ill-defined and that of the Kaluza-Klein black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory or the one arrising from heterotic string compactification is ill-defined only at the points of the ergo-branch.
