Abstract:Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services have experienced remarkable growth in recent years and have become particularly popular among younger consumers. Addressing these trends, this study aims to investigate the relationship between BNPL usage, consumer behavior, and financial well-being, with a specific focus on the mediating roles of demographic factors and financial literacy. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to collect comprehensive data from a varied consumer sample. Quantitative analysis identified significant correlations between BNPL usages and increased impulsive spending, which contributes to financial difficulties, particularly among younger individuals. Qualitative insights further revealed the decision-making processes and perceived long-term impacts of BNPL services. While financial literacy was found to serve as a mitigating factor, demographic variables such as income and age proved crucial in influencing financial outcomes. The findings have significant theoretical and practical implications, reinforcing behavioral finance theories related to cognitive biases in financial decision-making. These insights are vital for safeguarding consumers from potential risks associated with BNPL services. The study advocates for future research to explore the long-term effects of BNPL on financial stability and to investigate cultural differences in these impacts, thus providing a more nuanced understanding of the phenomenon.

Abstract:The Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) mechanism has emerged as a major force in the digital payments landscape, transforming consumers’ online transactions worldwide. With the rise of online shopping and the emergence of e-commerce, consumer purchase behaviour has shifted from rational to impulsive purchases. In addition, more and more online retailers and platforms are partnering with payment solution providers to offer their customers a simple and seamless payment experience. However, there are concerns about the potential negative effects of the user-friendly BNPL system, especially in terms of impulsive purchasing behaviour. This study focuses on Malaysian Millennials’ impulsive purchase behaviour using the BNPL system. It proposed a research model based on the Stimulus Organism Response (S-O-R) framework to investigate consumer response and behaviour.

Financial and credit activity problems of theory and practice

Abstract:This research investigates the impacts of financial technology (Fintech) on traditional financial services and the emergence of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) companies within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Fintech signifies a paradigmatic shift in the financial landscape, utilizing technology to transform banking, payment systems, investment strategies, and lending practices. The BNPL model, recognized for its disruptive nature, enables consumers to divide purchases into interest-free installments, thereby reshaping global consumer spending patterns. This study concentrates specifically on the Saudi Arabian context, where Fintech adoption is experiencing rapid growth. It scrutinizes the factors that influence BNPL adoption behavior among Saudi consumers, addressing a research void in localized studies. A sample of 100 consumer participants responded to an online survey. The statistical analysis underscores the strength, significance, and correlation between financial elements and the factors crucial to the decision-making process for BNPL adoption. The descriptive analysis of Independent Variables (IVs) encompassing Performance Expectancy (PE), Effort Expectancy (EE), Social Influence (SI), and Facilitating Conditions (FC) has provided significant insights into the perceptions of consumers regarding the adoption of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services. The analysis has revealed noteworthy patterns in the data. Performance Expectancy (PE) demonstrates moderate perceptions (Mean = 2.98), indicating a measured belief in the usefulness of BNPL. Furthermore, Facilitating Conditions (FC) registered moderate scores (Mean = 3.04), underscoring the significance of favorable external factors. Collectively, these findings depict a moderate inclination and a generally positive outlook among respondents towards BNPL adoption, providing insights into the factors influencing their adoption behaviors. The research findings contribute to academic comprehension, provide insights for industry stakeholders, and inform the development of policies and regulations within Saudi Arabia's dynamic Fintech ecosystem. Future studies may utilize longitudinal studies, conduct cross-cultural comparisons, and explore technological integration in exploring the BNPL consumer behavior studies.

Abstract:An Equated Monthly Instalment (EMI) is a fixed payment amount made by a borrower to a lender at a specified date each calendar month. The EMI consists of both the principal amount and the interest on the loan, which is spread over a predetermined period. EMIs are commonly used in home loans, personal loans, and auto loans, where the borrower repays the loan in regular instalments over time. Credit card companies typically offer this facility, but nowadays, it is also available with debit cards. Many banks are now providing a pre-approved credit limit for their debit card holders as well. BNPL stands for "Buy Now, Pay Later". It is a payment option that allows consumers to purchase goods and services and pay for them later, typically with no interest or fees. BNPL schemes offer customers the convenience of paying for purchases over time, without needing a credit card or traditional loan. This payment option has become increasingly popular among consumers, particularly among younger generations, to manage their finances and make larger purchases more affordable. However, it also has potential drawbacks, such as higher spending and risks of missed payments, that should be considered before utilizing this payment option. The objective of this study is to examine the factors that motivate consumers to choose EMI schemes and BNPL services as payment options, and to evaluate their perceived advantages and the risks associated with them. The study primarily relied on primary data collected from 100 samples using convenient sampling, along with secondary sources such as published research reports on BNPL.

Abstract:Over the last decade, the popularity of "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) in Indonesia has been increasing due to the various attractive offers available to consumers. However, the unwise use of BNPL may cause impulsive buying behavior, leading to excessive consumptions and waste productions that ultimately negatively affect the environment. Therefore, it is important to understand factors influencing the use of BNPL and impulsive buying behavior in order to help the BNPL users to use it more responsibly, ultimately control their consumption and reduce unnecessary wastes. This study explores the influence of BNPL users' digital financial literacy, self-control, and perceived risk on their impulsive buying behaviors. This study surveys BNPL users in Indonesia through various online channels. Using PLS Smart 3.0 on the survey data of 185 respondents of BNPL users, this study found that digital financial literacy and self-control influenced the impulsive buying behavior of BNPL users. However, the results also show that self-control has a greater influence than digital financial literacy on the impulsive buying behavior of BNPL users. In contrast, risk perception showed the opposite result. Hence, a policy strategy involving self-control and DFL in minimizing impulsive buying should be implemented to avoid overconsumption and waste crises.

Abstract:The growth of e-commerce in Indonesia has led to the rise of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services, offering convenience and flexibility to match consumers' spending habits. However, the perceived benefits and value of BNPL, including convenience, utility, and flexibility, can also tempt consumers into impulse purchases. This study aims to investigate the impact of the perceived usefulness and value of BNPL on Indonesian e-commerce consumers' satisfaction, impulse buying behavior, and post-purchase intentions. Data was collected through a random sampling method from 521 respondents in Indonesia and employed Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that the perceived utility and value of PayLater/BNPL positively influence satisfaction and post-purchase intention, while the perceived usefulness of PayLater/BNPL positively impacts impulsive buying behavior. The findings highlight the strong influence of perceived value and usefulness on customer satisfaction, post-purchase intention, and impulsive buying behavior. These insights have implications for marketers, retailers, and policymakers in effectively utilizing and regulating BNPL services to enhance customer satisfaction and responsible purchasing behavior. Future research can focus on objective behavioral measurement methods, cross-cultural research, the long-term effects of BNPL services, and the role of technology and innovation in shaping consumer behavior.

Abstract:E-commerce has profoundly altered the shopping behaviors of consumers in Indonesia. Additionally, fintech companies have introduced "paylater" services, revolutionizing the payment process for online purchases. Paylater operates on a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) system, allowing consumers to make purchases and defer payment. This innovation enhances the ease and security of online shopping, enticing users with enticing sales promotions. A survey targeting e-commerce users in Indonesia was conducted and subsequently analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM - PLS). Employing a quantitative descriptive approach with a cross-sectional design, data was collected offline over 14 days in DKI Jakarta, Indonesia, yielding a final dataset from 122 respondents out of 210 obtained. Research outcomes revealed that sales promotion, subjective norms, and e-commerce live streaming features significantly influence impulsive buying behavior among consumers. The use of paylater services moderates this relationship, indicating that frequent paylater users tend to exhibit more impulsivity in their purchasing patterns. Despite the convenience offered by paylater services, there are associated risks such as debt accumulation and financial mismanagement. The findings of this research can serve as an educational tool for potential paylater users, encouraging responsible use and financial management. This research substantially contributes to the growth of fintech companies and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), ultimately fostering economic development and providing a reference for future researchers exploring similar topics.

Abstract:Sustainable development has emerged as a paramount priority globally, with the fintech services playing a crucial role in achieving these goals. Although previous research has explored consumer perceptions of novel fintech services, including Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) applications, there remains a knowledge gap regarding the factors influencing adoption among young consumers. This study addresses this limitation by investigating the determinants of BNPL app usage among Saudi Arabian Generation Z consumers, integrating the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and DeLone and McLean's Information Systems Success model. A survey of 380 BNPL app consumers from Generation Z was conducted, and their responses were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence positively impact the intention to continue using BNPL apps. Furthermore, system quality, service quality, and information quality exhibit significant correlations with satisfaction within the IS Success model. The study's outcomes are expected to inform app developers in designing effective apps that engage digital-native consumers and provide policymakers with insights to enhance fintech services. This research contributes significantly to the existing body of knowledge on fintech adoption, intentions, and satisfaction.

Abstract:This study explores the liquidity insurance role of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL). As a complementary study to Bian et al. (2023), we provide institutional background and mechanism analysis of BNPL's consumption-boosting effects. Since a significant consumption boosting effect exists even for individuals who did not draw on the BNPL credit line, we argue that BNPL provides liquidity insurance by releasing preexisting precautionary liquidity reserves into consumption. We also explore several robustness checks and heterogeneity analyses.

Abstract:The Millennials and Generation Z use online shopping for a holistic experience and buy more expensive or better-quality products with buy now pay later payment methods for their highly demanding needs. The authors aimed to deepen understanding of this phenomenon by finding related knowledge fields and discovering the type of economy that will represent an increasing market share for the method of domestic e-commerce payments. The methodology used combined computer-assisted review, descriptive statistics, and linear regression to explain the market share of 23 economies worldwide. Student credit card use, myopic consumer law, buying tendencies. and dark financial triangles were identified as related topics. Logistics performance, ease of doing business, and postal development were found to be significant factors. Finally, economies with medium ranks are inclined to adopt this kind of payment easily. Hence, major implications, both managerial and academic, must be addressed. High responsibility should be borne by industry associations, which should run information campaigns by collaborating with public institutions. From the point of view of theoretical implications, studying the buy now and pay later concept and its outcomes might deepen understanding of consumer behaviour, decision-making processes, risk perception mitigation, debt behaviours, and credit adoption.

Abstract:This paper provides a dataset that thoroughly explores online impulsive buying behavior, offering a comparative analysis between Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) users and non- Buy Now Pay Later users in Indonesia. Utilizing the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, the research investigates the nuanced interplay of external stimuli, cognitive and emotional responses, and resulting in impulsive purchasing behaviour. The dataset, derived from a detailed survey of 810 online consumers, unveils distinctive patterns in the impulsive buying behaviors of these two user groups, shedding light on the impact of Buy Now Pay Later stimuli on consumer decision-making. The Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) are employ using SmartPLS 4.0 to assess the reliability and validity of the survey data. This research contributes valuable insights for understanding the dynamics of online impulsive buying in the context of emerging digital payment systems. This dataset can contribute to formulating strategic marketing and other crucial decisions by Buy Now Pay Later (E-Paylater) providers. Furthermore, this dataset can be utilized for data analysis by various stakeholders seeking information on the purchasing decisions of digital consumer groups based on age, gender, education, and income levels. Abstract:The use of new financial technologies, such as PayLater services, has grown rapidly in recent years. This service allows consumers to buy goods without paying directly at the time of purchase, but instead pay later within a certain period of time. Although this service provides convenience and flexibility in shopping, unwise use can increase the risk of impulsive purchasing behavior. The purpose of this study is to find out how to analyze the relationship between PayLater use and impulsive shopping behavior. The analytical method used is a quantitative method with descriptive analysis. To process the data, the author used Microsoft Excel 2019 and SPSS 26 For Windows. The survey method was carried out by distributing questionnaires to respondents who used PayLater services and measuring the level of their impulsive behavior in buying goods online. The study results show a strong relationship between impulsive buying behavior and pay-later users.

Abstract:The advancement of digitalization in the modern world has expedited the shift from traditional economies to digital economies, offering both advantages and obstacles. The rapid growth of digital transactions, notably due to the emergence of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services, has sparked worries about its impact on financial management behaviors. As the usage of digital platforms like Shopee PayLater, primarily by Generation Z, continues to increase, there is a critical need to enhance financial literacy and establish self-regulation mechanisms to mitigate the potential risks of excessive consumption. This study examines the relationship found between financial literacy and self-control in financial management behavior using education level as a mediating effect. Generation Z individuals who use Buy Now Pay Later service in Indonesia, namely Shopee PayLater, were targeted as research subjects. This research shows that financial literacy, self-control, and education level each have significantly influenced financial management behavior directly. On the other hand, education level could not mediate the relationship between financial literacy and self-control on financial management behavior since the impact is insignificant. Most Generation Z individuals in Malang, Indonesia who use Shopee PayLater have a high education level, good financial literacy, self-control, and financial management behavior.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed a phenomenal rise of digital wallets (e-wallets), and the COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated their adoption globally. The economic impact of e-wallets is unclear because they provide not only a conduit to external bank accounts but also internal payment options, including the ever-popular Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL). We open the black box of e-wallets by examining transaction-level data matched with merchant and consumer information from a world-leading e-wallet provider in China, the userbase of which is representative of the population. We document that internal payment options, especially BNPL, dominate both online and on-site transactions. BNPL has greatly expanded credit access at the extensive margin through its adoption in two-sided payment markets. While BNPL crowds out other e-wallet payment options, it complements credit cards as seen in the behavior of users with both e-wallet credit and bank credit cards. Exploiting a randomized experiment, we also find that e-wallet credit through BNPL substantially boosts consumer spending. Nevertheless, users, especially those relying on e-wallets as their sole credit source, carefully moderate usage when incurring interest charges, likely as an attempt to improve their credit score. Our findings reveal that e-wallets go beyond being a sole payment channel to expand FinTech-based credit to underserved consumers. The insights apply to many economies transitioning from cash-heavy into cashless societies where digital payments and FinTech credit see the largest growth and market potential.

Abstract:The article examines the digitalization trends of the financial services market in the field of personal consumption. Attention is paid to the spread of various financial services in the field of personal finance management and e-commerce. Examples of foreign financial institutions focused on servicing trade and investment personal financial transactions are given. The specificity of digital technologies makes financial services remote, but their availability is increasing. It is shown that users prefer those banks that provide the opportunity to remotely manage personal accounts and monitor their own financial situation using online platforms and mobile applications. Therefore, the number of digital financial services offered in the field of personal financial transactions becomes a factor in the modern competitiveness of a financial institution. The development of consumer finance (consumer finance) covering operations from investing in real estate to paying for college education is analyzed. Wellplanned consumer finance helps users securely purchase products and services by paying for them in installments over a fixed period of time. The peculiarities of the BNPL industry – "buy now, pay later" – which modernized deferred and installment payments, were studied. BNPL solutions are available in online stores and are immanent for e-commerce. Therefore, the growth of e-commerce sales by 44.4% in 2021 compared to the same year in 2020 stimulated the spread of BNPL's financial services. This increases the competition of firms in this segment of the financial services market. In order to strengthen their competitive positions, the companies offer a number of new approaches to the implementation of BNPL products and solutions. First, they are direct providers of new financial services that are at the heart of BNPL's US solution development. Second, there are facilitators, large payment companies with well-established commercial relationships that seek to capitalize on the growing interest in direct supplier solutions. Third, retroactive suppliers offering different financing options for all purchases made with their credit card after the fact of payment.

Abstract:Purpose Buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) services can put consumers into a debt trap by encouraging consumers to buy things they cannot afford, leading to a culture of materialism and consumerism. Therefore, this research aims to investigate how materialism can influence BNPL use and impulsive and compulsive buying. Additionally, the authors examine if BNPL use and impulsive buying mediate between materialism and compulsive buying. Design/methodology/approach Data from 556 participants were collected through a structured questionnaire via an online survey. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using SMART PLS 4 was employed to analyze the relationship between variables and to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings Materialism impact BNPL use and increases the inclination for impulse buying, precipitating compulsive buying behavior. However, BNPL use does not directly influence compulsive buying. The mediating relationship was identified, where BNPL use, and impulsive buying mediate the relationship between materialism and compulsive buying. Practical implications BNPL use alone does not inevitably lead to compulsive buying. The only way BNPL use could lead to compulsive buying is through impulsive buying. Therefore, BNPL service providers need to foster responsible buying habits due to the rise in impulsive buying, which, if not controlled, could lead to a debt trap resulting from compulsive buying. Originality/value This study contributes to the limited BNPL literature because there is speculation, but the scarcity of empirical evidence to substantiate, how materialism influences BNPL use and increases the inclination for impulse buying, precipitating compulsive buying behavior.

E-commerce capitalizes on this shift in consumer behavior by offering a "Buy Now, Pay Later" payment option during periods of diminishing purchasing power. This research was undertaken to investigate the influence of the Buy Now Pay Later option on the E-Commerce Indonesia platform's online purchasing decisions. This research employs a survey technique in the form of a Google forms-distributed questionnaire. All data comes from 240 samples consisting of 80 users of Shopee Pay Later, 80 users of Tokopedia Pay Later, and 80 users of Lazada Pay Later residing in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Bandung. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use have a positive influence on the intention to use Buy Now Pay Later, but impulsive buying, materialism, budget constraints, and compulsive purchasing do not have a positive effect on Buy Now Pay Later intentions. Online buying decision is influenced positively by the intention to use Buy Now Pay Later. This study's findings were derived via data processing using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)

Abstract:Consumers' option to default when purchasing retail goods is a pervasive and difficult problem for retailers to manage, especially with the growing popularity of "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) payment methods. The difficulty arises because constructing optimal targeting policies requires balancing demand and cost aspects, as well as accounting for the consumer return option. In this paper we develop a structural model with both default and return options included, that nests related discrete choice models as special cases. The model enables a firm to measure the option value of both defaults and returns, and to balance their costs and benefits. We find considerable heterogeneity in the value of defaults and returns, across consumers and categories; higher values of these options leads to increases in demand. We find that the firm will infer that customers have lower price sensitivity and higher transaction fit uncertainty if we ignore defaults, and show how these results can help optimize return policy. We simulate response to firm decisions regarding default and returns where actual return cost exceeds default cost to the firm, which is an understudied but quite common problem in relatively small ticket (per unit) items sales through BNPL and credit payments payment mechanisms.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to see the influence of perceived convenience, perceived benefits, and perceived risk on impulsive buying behavior among students at the Faculty of Economics and Islamic Business, UIN Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary Padangsidempuan. This study uses a quantitative approach. The results of this research are that simultaneously, convenience, benefits, and risks have a significant effect on impulsive buying behavior. Partially, convenience has a positive and insignificant effect on impulsive buying behavior. Partially, benefits do not have a significant effect on impulsive buying behavior. Partially, risk has a positive and significant effect on impulsive buying behavior.
