Abstract:We provide a pedagogical overview of defect models of structure formation. We first introduce the concept of topological defect, and describe how to classify them. We then show how defects might be produced in phase transitions in the Early Universe and approach non-pathological scaling solutions. A very heuristic account of structure formation with defects is then provided, following which we introduce the tool box required for high precision calculations of CMB and LSS power spectra in these theories. The decomposition into scalar vector and tensor modes is reviewed, and then we introduce the concept of unequal-time correlator. We use isotropy and causality to constrain the form of these correlators. We finally show how these correlators may be decomposed into eigenmodes, thereby reducing a defect problem to a series of ``inflation'' problems. We conclude with a short description of results in these theories and how they fare against observations. We finally describe yet another application of topological defects in cosmology: baryogenesis.

Abstract:Structure formation with topological defects is described. The main differences from inflationary models are highlighted. The results are compared with recent observations. It is concluded that all the defect models studied so far are in disagreement with recent observations of CMB anisotropies. Furthermore, present observations do not support 'decoherence', a generic feature of structure formation from topological defects.

Abstract:Many theories of the early universe predict the existence of a multiverse where bubbles continuously nucleate giving rise to observers in their interior. In this paper, we point out that topological defects of several dimensionalities will also be produced in de Sitter like regions of the multiverse. In particular, defects could be spontaneously nucleated in our parent vacuum. We study the evolution of these defects as they collide with and propagate inside of our bubble. We estimate the present distribution of defects in the observable part of the universe. The expected number of such nearby defects turns out to be quite small, even for the highest nucleation rate. We also study collisions of strings and domain walls with our bubble in our past light cone. We obtain simulated full-sky maps of the loci of such collisions, and find their angular size distribution. Similarly to what happens in the case of bubble collisions, the prospect of detecting any collisions of our bubble with ambient defects is greatly enhanced in the case where the cosmological constant of our parent vacuum is much higher than the vacuum energy density during inflation in our bubble.

Abstract:As a point of departure it is suggested that Quantum Cosmology is a topological concept independent from metrical constraints. Methods of continuous topological evolution and topological thermodynamics are used to construct a cosmological model of the present universe, using the techniques based upon Cartan's theory of exterior differential systems. Thermodynamic domains, which are either Open, Closed, Isolated, or in Equilibrium, can be put into correspondence with topological systems of Pfaff topological dimension 4, 3, 2 and 1. If the environment of the universe is assumed to be a physical vacuum of Pfaff topological dimension 4, then continuous but irreversible topological evolution can cause the emergence of topologically coherent defect structures of Pfaff topological dimension less than 4. As galaxies and stars exchange radiation but not matter with the environment, they are emergent topological defects of Pfaff topological dimension 3 which are far from equilibrium. DeRham topological theory of period integrals over closed but not exact exterior differential systems leads to the emergence of quantized, deformable, but topologically coherent, singular macrostates at all scales. The method leads to the conjecture that dark matter and energy is represented by those thermodynamic topological defect structures of Pfaff dimension 2 or less.
Cosmic Topological Defects from Holography

Abstract:This work investigates cosmic topological defects in gauge theories, focusing on models with an $SU(N)$ gauge group coupled with a single flavor, explored through a holographic framework. At low energies, the effective theory is described by an axion-like particle resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the axial $U(1)_A$ flavor symmetry. As the Universe cools below a critical temperature, the chiral symmetry is broken, and non-trivial vacuum configurations form, resulting in the creation of cosmic strings and domain walls. We provide a UV description of these defects in a particular holographic theory, the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, as probe D6-branes. We show the presence of a first-order phase transition separating string loop from domain wall solutions. String loops charged under the baryon symmetry and with angular momentum - vortons - can be understood as excitations of a topological phase of matter given by a Chern-Simons theory living on the D6-brane world volume. Finally, we provide an effective description of string loops and vortons in terms of degrees of freedom living on the flavor brane, i.e. mesonic modes.

Abstract:We point out that the moduli sector of the $(2,2)$ string compactification with its nonperturbatively preserved non-compact symmetries is a fertile framework to study global topological defects, thus providing a natural source for the large scale structure formation. Based on the target space modular invariance of the nonperturbative superpotential of the four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric string vacua, topologically stable stringy domain walls are found. They are supersymmetric solutions, thus saturating the Bogomolnyi bound. It is also shown that there are moduli sectors that allow for the global monopole-type and texture-type configurations whose radial stability is ensured by higher derivative terms.

Abstract:By making use of the complete decomposition of SO(3) spin connection, the topological defect in 3-dimensional Euclidean gravity is studied in detail. The topological structure of disclination is given as the combination of a monopole structure and a vortex structure. Furthermore, the Kac-Moody algebra generated by the monopole and vortex is discussed in three dimensional Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract:A bstract Formation and evolution of topological defects in course of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking phase transitions is of wide interest in many areas of physics, from cosmology through condensed matter to low temperature physics. Its study in strongly coupled systems, in absence of quasiparticles, is especially challenging. We investigate breaking of U(1) symmetry and the resulting spontaneous formation of vortices in a (2 + 1)-dimensional holographic superconductor employing gauge/gravity duality, a ‘first-principles’ approach to study strongly coupled systems. Magnetic fluxons with quantized fluxes are seen emerging in the post-transition superconducting phase. As expected in type II superconductors, they are trapped in the cores of the order parameter vortices. The dependence of the density of these topological defects on the quench time, the dispersion of the typical winding numbers, and the vortex-vortex correlations are consistent with predictions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Abstract:We study topological defect lines in the symmetric-product orbifolds $\mathrm{Sym}^N(X)$ for a generic seed CFT $X$. We focus on the defects which preserve the maximum of the $S_N$ symmetry. When $X$ is taken to describe the free theory of four fermions and four bosons on a $\mathbb{T}^4$, we construct holographically dual backgrounds describing propagation of tensionless closed strings in the presence of spacetime defects wrapping the conformal boundary. We find a precise match between the spectra of local on-shell closed-string vertex operators in the bulk and the spectra of non-local disorder fields in the spacetime theory.

Abstract:In this paper, a method of domain adaptation for clustered language models is developed. It is based on a previously developed clustering algorithm, but with a modified optimisation criterion. The results are shown to be slightly superior to the previously published 'Fillup' method, which can be used to adapt standard n-gram models. However, the improvement both methods give compared to models built from scratch on the adaptation data is quite small (less than 11% relative improvement in word error rate). This suggests that both methods are still unsatisfactory from a practical point of view.

Abstract:We demonstrate that field theories involving explicit breaking of continous symmetries, incorporate two generic classes of topological defects each of which is stable for a particular range of parameters. The first class includes defects of the usual type where the symmetry gets restored in the core and vacuum energy gets trapped there. We show however that these defect solutions become unstable for certain ranges of parameters and decay not to the vacuum but to another type of stable defect where the symmetry in not restored in the core. In the wall case, initially spherical, bubble-like configurations are simulated numerically and shown to evolve generically towards a planar collapse. In the string case, the decay of the symmetric core vortex resembles the decay of a semilocal string to a skyrmion with the important difference that while the skyrmion is unstable and decays to the vacuum, the resulting non-symmetric vortex is topologically stable.

Abstract:Topological defects are found in particles confined to planar disks interacting via the 1/r Coulomb potential. The total interior topological charge is found to monotonically converge to a negative value as the energy decreases during the relaxation process regardless of initial configurations; it is more negative in a larger cluster. The comparison with a uniform hyperbolic tessellation reveals an underlying hyperbolic structure in a low-energy configuration where the particle density increases from the center of the disk to its boundary. An elliptic structure is identified in an opposite particle distribution where the particle density decreases from the center to the edge of the disk. The novel mechanism of density inhomogeneity driven topological defects as well as the underlying geometric structure may shed light in understanding a wide variety of relevant systems.
Top Down Approach to Topological Duality Defects

Abstract:Topological duality defects arise as codimension one generalized symmetry operators in quantum field theories (QFTs) with a duality symmetry. Recent investigations have shown that in the case of 4D $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, an appropriate choice of (complexified) gauge coupling and global form of the gauge group can lead to a rather rich fusion algebra for the associated defects, leading to examples of non-invertible symmetries. In this work we present a top down construction of these duality defects which generalizes to QFTs with lower supersymmetry, where other 0-form symmetries are often present. We realize the QFTs of interest via D3-branes probing $X$ a Calabi-Yau threefold cone with an isolated singularity at the tip of the cone. The IIB duality group descends to dualities of the 4D worldvolume theory. Non-trivial codimension one topological interfaces arise from configurations of 7-branes "at infinity" which implement a suitable $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ transformation when they are crossed. Reduction on the boundary topology $\partial X$ results in a 5D symmetry TFT. Different realizations of duality defects, such as the gauging of 1-form symmetries with certain mixed anomalies and half-space gauging constructions, simply amount to distinct choices of where to place the branch cuts in the 5D bulk.

Topological symmetry in quantum field theory

Abstract:We introduce a framework for internal topological symmetries in quantum field theory, including "noninvertible symmetries" and "categorical symmetries". This leads to a calculus of topological defects which takes full advantage of well-developed theorems and techniques in topological field theory. Our discussion focuses on finite symmetries, and we give indications for a generalization to other symmetries. We treat quotients and quotient defects (often called "gauging" and "condensation defects"), finite electromagnetic duality, and duality defects, among other topics. We include an appendix on finite homotopy theories, which are often used to encode finite symmetries and for which computations can be carried out using methods of algebraic topology. Throughout we emphasize exposition and examples over a detailed technical treatment.

Abstract:There are two prominent applications of the mathematical concept of topology to the physics of materials: band topology, which classifies different topological insulators and semimetals, and topological defects that represent immutable deviations of a solid lattice from its ideal crystalline form. While these two classes of topological phenomena have generally been treated as separate topics, recent experimental advancements have begun to probe their intricate and surprising interactions, in real materials as well as synthetic metamaterials. Topological lattice defects in topological materials offer a platform to explore a diverse range of novel phenomena, such as topological pumping via topological defects, embedded topological phases, synthetic dimensions, and non-Hermitian skin effects. In this Perspective, we survey the developments in this rapidly moving field, and give an outlook of its impact on materials science and applications.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of topological defects in continuum theories governed by a free energy minimization principle, building on our recently developed framework (Romano et al 2023 J. Stat. Mech. 083211). We show how the equation of motion of point defects, domain walls, disclination lines and any other singularity can be understood with one unifying mathematical framework. For disclination lines, this also allows us to study the interplay between the internal line tension and the interaction with other lines. This interplay is non-trivial, allowing defect loops to expand, instead of contracting, due to external interaction. We also use this framework to obtain an analytical description of two long-lasting problems in point defect motion, namely the scale dependence of the defect mobility and the role of elastic anisotropy in the motion of defects in liquid crystals. For the former, we show that the effective defect mobility is strongly problem-dependent, but it can be computed with high accuracy for a pair of annihilating defects. For the latter, we show that at the first order in perturbation theory, anisotropy causes a non-radial force, making the trajectory of annihilating defects deviate from a straight line. At higher orders, it also induces a correction in the mobility, which becomes non-isotropic for the + 1 / 2 defect. We argue that, due to its generality, our method can help to shed light on the motion of singularities in many different systems, including driven and active non-equilibrium theories.

Abstract:We consider the topological defect lines commuting with the spectral flow and the = (4, 4) superconformal symmetry in two dimensional non-linear sigma models on K3. By studying their fusion with boundary states, we derive a number of general results for the category of such defects. We argue that while for certain K3 models infinitely many simple defects, and even a continuum, can occur, at generic points in the moduli space the category is actually trivial, i.e. it is generated by the identity defect. Furthermore, we show that if a K3 model is at the attractor point for some BPS configuration of D-branes, then all topological defects have integral quantum dimension. We also conjecture that a continuum of topological defects arises if and only if the K3 model is a (possibly generalized) orbifold of a torus model. Finally, we test our general results in a couple of examples, where we provide a partial classification of the topological defects.

The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations which differ in their assumptions about photon structure and parton evolution. Effects of the resolved processes of longitudinally polarized virtual photons at HERA are investigated for the first time.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Assuming spherical symmetry and weak field, it is shown that if one solves the Poisson equation or the Einstein field equations sourced by a topological defect, i.e. a singularity of a very specific form, the result is a localized gravitational field capable of driving flat rotation (i.e. Keplerian circular orbits at a constant speed for all radii) of test masses on a thin spherical shell without any underlying mass. Moreover, a large-scale structure which exploits this solution by assembling concentrically a number of such topological defects can establish a flat stellar or galactic rotation curve, and can also deflect light in the same manner as an equipotential (isothermal) sphere. Thus, the need for dark matter or modified gravity theory is mitigated, at least in part.
