Abstract:An aromatic isocynide-substituted diiron complex 5 has been synthesized as amimic for the active site of Fe-only hydrogenases. Its structure has been fully characterised by X-ray crystallography. The 4-iodophenylisocyanide ligands in 5 are in the basal positions and are nearly parallel to each other, with pi-pi stacking interactions. Four isomeric geometries of complex 5 have been optimized by DFT calculations, and the electrochemical properties of 5 have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry in the absence and presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid (HOTs). Analysis of the cyclic voltammetric curve indicates that the reduction event at about -1.43 V is electrocatalytically active to proton reduction. This potential is more positive than that of any functionalized propanedithiolatidiiron complex. (c) Woley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Abstract:To further develop the biomimetic chemistry of [FeFe]- and [NiFe]-hydrogenases for catalytic proton reduction to hydrogen (H2), two serials of dinuclear diiron and trinuclear NiFe2 dithiolate complexes with chelating PCNCP ligands, namely, Fe2(μ-edt)(CO)4{κ2-(Ph2PCH2)2NR} (1a–1c) and Fe2(CO)6(μ3-S)2Ni{(Ph2PCH2)2NR} (2a–2c) where edt = SCH2CH2S and PCNCP = (Ph2PCH2)2NR [R = Bui (CH2CHMe2), But (CMe3), and Bun (CH2CH2CH2Me)], have been synthesized in moderate yields. All the new complexes 1a–1c and 2a–2c have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. More importantly, to explore the influence of transition metal cores (i.e., nickel and iron) on the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of hydrogenase-inspired molecular catalysts for H2 evolution, the cyclic voltammetries (CVs) of 1a–1c and 2a–2c are studied and compared in nBu4NPF6/DMF solution without and with acetic acid (HOAc) as a proton source. This finding suggests that (i) complexes 1a–1c and 2a–2c are all found to be active for electrocatalytic H2 evolution, but (ii) they display the distinct redox behaviors and electrocatalytic proton reduction abilities.

Abstract:Significance Hydrogen production is central to a solar fuel paradigm, and a variety of metabolic processes use H 2 as an electron donor or protons as an electron acceptor. Hydrogenases mediate the biological redox interconversion of protons and H 2 , with FeFe hydrogenases among the most active. This reactivity occurs at the “H cluster,” which features an organometallic subcluster that is synthesized and inserted in a complex series of steps. The accessory protein HydG generates an [Fe(CO) 2 (CN)] intermediate en route to the H cluster, and the mechanism of this process is under intensive investigation. We now report that free l -cysteine serves as the ligand platform on which the [Fe(CO) 2 (CN)] synthon is built and plays a role in both Fe 2+ binding and synthon release.

Abstract:Structural and functional biomimicking of the active site of [NiFe]-hydrogenases can provide helpful hints for designing bioinspired catalysts to replace the expensive noble metal catalysts for H2 generation and uptake. Treatment of dianion [Ni(phma)]2― [H4phma = N,N'-1,2-phenylenebis(2-mercaptoacetamide)] with [NiCl2(dppp)] (dppp = bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) yielded a dinickel product [Ni(phma)(μ-S,S')Ni(dppp)] (1) as the model complex relevant to the active site of [NiFe]-H2ases. The structure of complex 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. From cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis studies, complex 1 was found to be a moderate electrocatalyst for the H2-evoluting reaction using ClCH2COOH as the proton source.

Modelling metalloenzymes: Nickel-iron and Di-iron hydrogenases

Abstract:The catalytic cycles for H-2 oxidation in [NiFe] and [FeFe] hydrogenases have been investigated through density functional theory (DFT) for a wide variety of redox and protonated structures of the active site models, (CO)(CN)(2)Fe(mu-SMe)(2)Ni(SMC)(2) and L(CO)(CN)Fe((mu-SCH2)(2)X)(mu-CO)Fe(CO)(CN)(SMe), respectively. By combining a calibration curve for the calculated CO bond distances and frequencies and the measured IR stretching frequencies from related complexes with the DFT calculations on the [NiFe] model, the redox states and structures of the active site are predicted. Dihydrogen activation on the Fe(II)-Ni(III) species is more favorable than on the corresponding Ni(II) or Ni(I) species. Our final proposed structures are consistent with IR, EPR, and ENDOR measurements and the correlation coefficient between the measured CO frequency in the enzyme and the CO distance/frequency calculated for the model species is excellent. The unconstrained optimized geometries for high-spin Ni(II) species and for the Ni(III) species involved in the H-2-cleavage reaction, especially the transition state, show remarkable structural resemblance to the active site in the enzyme crystal structure. For the [FeFe] modeling, full frequency calculations on models for the active site and for well-characterized complexes show that observed and catalytically active redox species in the enzyme must correspond to Fe(II)-Fe(II), Fe(II)-Fe(I), and Fe(I)-Fe(I). Furthermore, when X is NH rather than CH2, a single Fe and this N create a very favorable thermodynamic path for the heterolytic cleavage of H-2. The H-2-cleaved species shows an unusually short "dihydrogen bond", Fe-H ---- H-N.
Electrocatalytic proton reduction by a model for [NiFeSe] hydrogenases

Abstract:Two new heterodinuclear nickel-iron complexes [Ni(pbSmSe)FeCpCO]PF6 and [Ni(xbSmSe)FeCpCO]PF6 were synthesized as mimics of the [NiFeSe] hydrogenase active site (HCp = cyclopentadiene; H2pbSmSe = 1,9-diselenol-3,7-dithia-2,2,8,8-tetramethylnonane; H2xbSmSe = 1,2,-bis(2-thiabutyl-3,3-dimethyl-4-selenol)benzene). The compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry. X-ray structure determinations showed that in both NiFe complexes the nickel(ii) center is in a square-planar S2Se2 environment; the two selenolate donors are bridging to the iron(ii) center that is further coordinated to an η5-cyclopentadienyl group and a carbon monoxide ligand. Electrochemical studies showed that the complex [Ni(pbSmSe)FeCpCO]PF6 is an electrocatalyst for the production of H2 in DMF in the presence of acetic acid at -2.1 V vs. Fc+/Fc; a foot-of-the-wave (FOWA) analysis of the catalytic currents yielded an estimation of kobs of 24 s-1.
Nickel-ruthenium-based complexes as biomimetic models of [NiFe] and [NiFeSe] hydrogenases for dihydrogen evolution

Abstract:The two heterodinuclear nickel-ruthenium complexes [Ni(xbSmS)RuCp(PPh3)]PF6 and [Ni(xbSmSe)RuCp(PPh3)]PF6 (H2xbSmS = 1,2-bis(4-mercapto-3,3-dimethyl-2-thiabutyl)benzene, H2xbSmSe = 1,2,-bis(2-thiabutyl-3,3-dimethyl-4-selenol)benzene, Cp = cyclopentadienyl) were synthesized as biomimetic models of [NiFe] and [NiFeSe] hydrogenases. The X-ray structural analyses of the complexes show that the two NiRu complexes are isomorphous; in both NiRu complexes the nickel(ii) centers are coordinated in a square-planar environment with two thioether donor atoms and two thiolate or selenolate donors that are bridging to the ruthenium(ii) center. The Ru(ii) ion is further coordinated to a η5-cyclopentadienyl group and a triphenylphosphane ligand. These complexes catalyze hydrogen evolution in the presence of acetic acid in acetonitrile solution at around -2.20 V vs. Fc+/Fc with overpotentials of 810 and 830 mV, thus they can be regarded as functional models of the [NiFe] and [NiFeSe] hydrogenases.
Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by Robust Square Planar Nickel Complexes in a S 2 P 2 Coordination Environment

Abstract:Stimulated by the structural feature of the [NiFe]-hydrogenases active sites, five new heteroleptic 1,2-bis(p-substitutedphenyl)ethylene-1,2-dithiolate nickel complexes containing N-(p-methoxyphenyl)-bis(diphenylphosphine)-amine ligand, [p-CH3OC6H4N(PPh2)2]Ni[S2C2(C6H4R-p)2)] (R = CH3O (1), CH3 (2), H (3), Br (4), and F (5)), were synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure analysis of 2 and 4CH2Cl2 indicates the two complexes have almost perfect S2P2 square planar coordination environment defined by the 1,2-diarylethylene-1,2-dithiolate and bis(diphenylphosphine)amine ligands. The electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic hydrogen-evolving activity were investigated using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as the proton source in combination with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and controlled potential electrolysis (CPE). The turnover frequencies (TOF) and overpotentials () for hydrogen evolution by 1 - 5 (0.25 mM) in DMF are estimated to be 423-894 s-1 and 0.91-1.02 V with 67.32 mM TFA, respectively. The faradaic efficiencies (FE) of 66.15-98.20 % and turnover numbers (TON) of 13.16-35.92 are achieved under the CPE experiments over 18 h periods at −2.00 V vs Fc+/Fc, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations display that the electron-withdrawing substituent on the 1,2-diarylethylene-1,2-dithiolate ligand can reduce the energy levels of highest occupied molecular oribital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular oribital (LUMO) of the complex, leading lower negative redox and catalytic potentials. On the basis of experiment and theoretical calculations, an ECEC electrocatalytic mechanism for hydrogen production is proposed. Intriguingly, excellent electrochemical stability of 1 - 5 in hydrogen generation is observed, which can be acted as potential candidates of electrocatalysts with high tolerance. These research findings confirm that the synthesized heteroleptic complexes can be served as homogeneous molecular electrocatalysts of hydrogen production with high tolerance.

Abstract:As a further exploration of the desirable diiron subsite models of [FeFe]-hydrogenases for hydrogen (H2) evolution, the asymmetrically PNP-chelate diiron ethanedithiolate complexes Fe2(μ-edt)(CO)4{κ2-(Ph2P)2NR} (1–3) can be synthesized in good yields through the substitution reactions of diiron all-carbonyl complexes Fe2(μ-edt)(CO)6 (A, edt = SCH2CH2S) with different PNP ligands (PNP = (Ph2P)2NR, R = (CH2)2CHMe2, (CH2)3OMe, (CH2)3SMe) in the presence of Me3NO·2H2O as decarbonylating agent. These new complexes 1–3 have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and particularly for 1 by X-ray crystallography. Further, the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of complexes 1–3 and their precursor A as a reference compound are studied and compared through cyclic voltammetry (CV) in the absence and presence of HOAc as a proton source, suggesting that they are all found to be electrochemically active but show the distinct electrocatalytic abilities for proton reduction to H2.

Abstract:As the [2Fe](H) subsite models of [FeFe]-hydrogenases, a series of PNP-chelated and -bridged diiron dithiolate complexes 1a-f and 2a-f together with the three related monophosphine complexes 3a-c were prepared by the selective substitutions of the all-carbonyl complex Fe-2(mu-pdt)(CO)(6) (A, pdt = SCH2CH2CH2S) with aminodiphosphines (Ph2P)(2)NR (denoted as PNP) under different reaction conditions. The first UV irradiation of the toluene solutions of A with different PNP ligands (PNP = (Ph2P)(2)NR; R = (CH2)(3)Me, (CH2)(3)NMe2, (CH2)(3)Si(OEt)(3), C6H5, C6H4OMe-p, C6H4CO2Me-p) readily afforded the target PNP-chelated complexes Fe-2(mu-pdt)(CO)(4){(kappa(2)-Ph2P)(2)NR} (1a-f), while the reflux of xylene solutions of A with the aforementioned PNP ligands produced the PNP-bridged complexes Fe-2(mu-pdt)(CO)(4){(mu-Ph2P)(2)NR} (2a-f). Comparatively, treatments of A and one type of PNP ligand with N-aryl substituents R (R = C6H5, C6H4OMe-p, C6H4CO2Me-p) in MeCN at room temperature in the presence of the decarbonylating agent Me3NO center dot 2H(2)O formed the unexpected monophosphine complexes Fe-2(mu-pdt)(CO)(5){kappa(1)-Ph2P(NHR)} (3a-c) and the minor chelated complexes 1d-f. All of the complexes 1a-f, 2a-f, and 3a-c have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and particularly for 1a,b,d-f, 2b,d-f, and 3b by X-ray crystallography. Additionally, the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of complexes la and 2a as a pair of representative isomers have been evaluated and compared by cyclic voltammetry in MeCN as solvent in the absence and presence of HOAc as a proton source.

Abstract:Diiron azadithiolate complexes are considered as important biomimetic models for the diiron subsite of [FeFe]-hydrogenases. Here, the diiron azadithiolate complex Fe-2[(mu-SCH2)(2)NCH2CCH](CO)(6) (1), produced by the condensation reaction of Fe-2[(mu-SCH2OH)(2)(CO)(6) and NH2CH2CCH, is described. Meanwhile, the corresponding phosphine-substituted diiron azadithiolate complexes Fe-2[(mu-SCH2)(2)NCH2CCH](CO)(5)L (2-6) = PPh3, P(C6H4-4-CH3)(3), P(C6H4-4-OCH3)(3), P(-2-C4H3O)(3), PPh2C6H11] have been successfully prepared by the reactions of Fe-2[(mu-SCH2OH)(2)(CO)(5)L and NH2CH2CCH. All the new complexes 1-6 were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV/Vis, NMR spectroscopy, and for 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 by X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. Heteroleptic dmit nickel complexes with bis(diphenylphosphanyl)amine ligands as robust molecular electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Four new neutral heteroleptic dmit nickel complexes bearing bis(diphenylphosphanyl)amine ligands, [RN (PPh2)2Ni(dmit)] (where dmit2− = 1,3‐dithiole‐2‐thione‐4,5‐dithiolate; R = (CH2)4CH3 [1], (CH2)3OCH3 [2], (CH2)2CH(CH3)2 [3], and CHPhCH3 [4]), have been synthesized in moderated yields by the reactions between (n‐Bu)2Sn(dmit) and RN (PPh2)2NiCl2 at room temperature. The complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy (Fourier transform infrared [FTIR], ultraviolet–visible [UV–vis], 1H, 13C{1H}, and 31P{1H} nuclear magnetic resonance [NMR]), thermogravimetric analysis, and single crystal X‐ray diffraction. In the crystal structures of 1–3 and 4·2CH2Cl2, every nickel atom adopts a slightly distorted square‐planar coordination by two phosphorus atoms of the RN (PPh2)2 ligand and two sulfur atoms of the dmit ligand. Furthermore, the electrochemical behaviors and electrocatalytic activities of 1–4 for hydrogen evolution have also been investigated by the cyclic voltammetry using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as the proton source. With the addition of 120‐mM trifluoroacetic acid to 0.5‐mM 1–4 in MeCN, the turnover frequency values of these catalysts were estimated to be 2827–5149 s−1, and the relevant overpotentials were 0.72–0.79 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical investigations suggest that H2 production proceeds via a key hydride intermediate [NiH (SH)] with an adjacent protonated sulfur atom of the dmit ligand in which the chelating sulfur atoms serve as proton relays. These findings demonstrate that these heteroleptic dmit nickel complexes could serve as robust and effective molecular electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Reaction of the parent complex ( μ -PDT)Fe 2 -(CO) 6 ( A ) (PDT = 1,3-SCH 2 CH 2 CH 2 S 2− ) with the bidentate N/P ligand [(Ph 2 P) 2 N(C 6 H 4 Cl- p )] in the presence of Me 3 NO as decarbonylating agent produced an unexpected iron–sulfur complex [( μ -PDT)Fe 2 (CO) 5 {PPh 2 (NHC 6 H 4 Cl- 1,4 )}] ( 1 ). Extending this chemistry further, two similar complexes [( μ -PDT)Fe 2 (CO) 5 {PPh 2 (NHC 6 H 4 NO 2 - 1,4 )}] ( 2 ) and [( μ -PDT)Fe 2 (CO) 5 {PPh 2 (NHC 6 H 4 CO 2 Et- 1,4 )}] ( 3 ) could be prepared from the simple substitution reactions of the precursor A with the monodentate N/P ligands Ph 2 P(NHC 6 H 4 NO 2 - 1,4 ) and Ph 2 P(NHC 6 H 4 CO 2 Et- 1,4 ), respectively. These new complexes, which can be considered as active site models of [FeFe] hydrogenases, have been characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, and NMR ( 1 H, 13 C, 31 P) spectroscopies, as well as by X-ray crystallography for complex 1 .

Abstract:Five new heteroleptic nickel complexes containing O‐methyldithiophosphate and aminodiphosphine monosulfide ligands, [Ni((PPh2)({S}PPh2)NR)(S2P{O}OCH3)] (R = (CH2)4CH3 (1), (CH2)3OCH3 (2), (CH2)3SCH3 (3), (CH2)2CH(CH3)2 (4) and C6H4CH3‐4 (5)), were synthesized by two different methods at room temperature. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 31P NMR and UV‐vis), single crystal X‐ray diffraction as well as thermogravimetric analysis. In the crystal structures of 1‐4 and 5⋅CH2Cl2, the nickel atom locates in a slightly distorted square‐planar coordination by one phosphorous atom and three sulfur atoms from the aminodiphosphine monodulfide and O‐meyldithiophosphate ligands. Furthermore, their electrochemical behaviors and electrocatalytic performances for the reduction proton to hydrogen have also been evaluated by the cyclic voltammetry using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as the proton source. With the addition of 120 mM TFA to MeCN solution of 1‐5 (1.0 mM), the turnover frequencies are estimated to be 494‐706 s‐1 and the corresponding overpotentials are 0.61‐0.70 V vs Fc+/Fc, respectively. This finding diagnoses that the heteroleptic nickel complexes can serve as robust and effective molecular electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Six aromatic dithiolate nickel complexes bearing N-substituted bis(diphenylphosphanyl)amine (RN (PPh2)(2)) ligands, IRN(PPh2)(2)Ni(bdt)] (bdt = 1,2-benzenedithiolate; R= (CH2)(3)OCH3 (1), (CH2)(3)SCH3 (2), CH(CH3)C6H5 (3)) and IRN(PPh2)(2)Ni(tdt)] (tdt = 3,4-toluenedithiolate; R = (CH2)(3)OCH3 (4), (CH2)(3)SCH3 (5), CH(CH3)C6H5 (6)), have been synthesized in moderated yields by condensations of RN(PPh2)(2)NiCl2 with 1,2-benzenedithiol or 3,4-toluenedithiol in the presence of Et3N at room temperature. All the complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR (H-1, C-13, and P-31) spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrum, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The crystal structures of complexes 1, 2, 3, and 5 have been investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The nickel atom adopts a slightly distorted square-planar coordination by two phosphorus atoms of RN(PPh2)(2) and two sulfur atoms of aromatic dithiolate ligands in their structures. Furthermore, the electrochemical behaviors of complexes 1-6 and their catalytic activities for electrochemical hydrogen evolution in CH2Cl2 solution with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as a proton source have been studied by cyclic voltammetry. Abstract:The combined structural and functional modeling study of [Fe]-H2ase has remained a great challenge, to date. Now, we report a series of new structural and functional [Fe]-H2ase models (1-6) that contain a mono-, di- or tetrasubstituted pyridine ligand with a biomimetic fac-C, N, S ligation. While models 1-3, 5 and 6 are conveniently prepared by a novel flexible pyridine ligand (FPL)-based method, model 4 is prepared simply by intramolecular CO replacement reaction of model 3. More interestingly, the structural study by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography proves that these new models include a biomimetic fac-acyl (or methylene) C, pyridyl N, thioether S ligation to an Fe(II) center and the C-Fe(II) σ bond is trans to an iodo ligand. In addition, the chemical reactivity study proves that they all have the enzyme-like H2 activation and hydride transfer function in the presence of imidazolium Im+, AgBF4 and Et3N. Particularly interesting is that a possible pathway for such H2 activation and hydride transfer reactions catalyzed by a representative model 4 is proposed and the existence of the highly unstable 5-coordinate intermediate M4 and Fe-H species M5 is supported by isolation and characterization of their MeCN-coordinated derivative 7 and chloro-substituted derivative 8, respectively.

Abstract:An azadithiolate bridged CN - bound pentacarbonyl bis-iron complex, mimicking the active site of [Fe-Fe] H 2 ase is synthesized. The geometric and electronic structure of this complex is elucidated using a combination of EXAFS analysis, infrared and Mössbauer spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The electrochemical investigations show that complex 1 effectively reduces H + to H 2 between pH 0-3 at diffusion-controlled rates (10 11 M -1 s -1 ) i.e. 10 8 s -1 at pH 3 with an overpotential of 140 mV. Electrochemical analysis and DFT calculations suggest that a CN - ligand increases the pK a of the cluster enabling hydrogen production from its Fe(I)-Fe(0) state at pHs much higher and overpotential much lower than its precursor bis-iron hexacarbonyl model which is active in its Fe(0)-Fe(0) state. The formation of a terminal Fe-H species, evidenced by spectro-electrochemistry in organic solvent, via a rate determining proton coupled electron transfer step and protonation of the adjacent azadithiolate, lowers the kinetic barrier leading to diffusion-controlled rates of H 2 evolution. The stereo-electronic factors enhance its catalytic rate by 3 order of magnitude relative to a bis-iron hexacarbonyl precursor at the same pH and potential.

Abstract:Five monophosphine‐substituted diiron propane‐1,2‐dithiolate complexes as the active site models of [FeFe]‐hydrogenases have been synthesized and characterized. Reactions of complex [Fe2(CO)6{μ‐SCH2CH(CH3)S}] (1) with a monophosphine ligand tris(4‐methylphenyl)phosphine, diphenyl‐2‐pyridylphosphine, tris(4‐chlorophenyl)phosphine, triphenylphosphine, or tris(4‐fluorophenyl)phosphine in the presence of the oxidative agent Me3NO·2H2O gave the monophosphine‐substituted diiron complexes [Fe2(CO)5(L){μ‐SCH2CH(CH3)S}] [L = P(4‐C6H4CH3)3, 2; Ph2P(2‐C5H4N), 3; P(4‐C6H4Cl)3, 4; PPh3, 5; P(4‐C6H4F)3, 6] in 81%–94% yields. Complexes 2–6 have been characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy, and X‐ray crystallography. In addition, electrochemical studies revealed that these complexes can catalyze the reduction of protons to H2 in the presence of HOAc.
