Abstract:This memo documents version 2 of the OSPF protocol. OSPF is a link-state routing protocol. It is designed to be run internal to a single Autonomous System. Each OSPF router maintains an identical database describing the Autonomous System's topology. From this database, a routing table is calculated by constructing a shortest- path tree.

Routing Algorithm for AD Hoc Networks of LEO Satellites Based on OSPF

Abstract:The static routing protocol is difficult to apply in the Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellite network due to the large number of satellites, dense nodes in the same orbit plane and fast satellite motion speed. In order to solve the dynamic change problem of satellite topology, this paper proposes a routing algorithm for AD hoc networks of LEO satellites based on OSPF. On the basis of periodicity and predictability of satellite topology, network connectivity scenarios are established and routing table information is determined. For routing node loss, we dynamically compare the received predictive link state notification and LSDB to correct routing information. At the same time, we also design the route reconstruction mode to complete the reliable transmission of information. STK and NS3 are used for simulation verification, and the results show that: compared with OSPF, our algorithm can reduce the route convergence time by 94.22 % , reduce the end-to-end delay by 56.17%, and reduce the packet loss rate by 64%.

Abstract:Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) are leaving the confines of research laboratories, to find place in real-world deployments. Outside specialized domains (military, vehicular, etc.), city-wide communitynetworks are emerging, connecting regular Internet users with each other, and with the Internet, via MANETs. Growing to encompass more than a handful of "trusted participants", the question of preserving the MANET network connectivity, even when faced with careless or malicious participants, arises, and must be addressed. A first step towards protecting a MANET is to analyze the vulnerabilities of the routing protocol, managing the connectivity. By understanding how the algorithms of the routing protocol operate, and how these can be exploited by those with ill intent, countermeasures can be developed, readying MANETs for wider deployment and use. This paper takes an abstract look at the algorithms that constitute the Optimized Link State Routing Protocol version 2 (OLSRv2), and identifies for each protocol element the possible vulnerabilities and attacks -- in a certain way, provides a "cookbook" for how to best attack an operational OLSRv2 network, or for how to proceed with developing protective countermeasures against these attacks.

Abstract:We present two formal models for the OSPF routing protocol, designed for the model checker Uppaal. The first one is an optimised model of an existing model that allows to check larger network topologies. The second one is a specialised model for adjacency building, a complex subprocedure of OSPF, which is not part of any existing model and which is known to be vulnerable to cyber attacks. We illustrate how both models can be used to discover vulnerabilities in routing protocols.

Abstract:OSPF currently supports multi-area networking with two severe limitations, due to the distance vector approach taken in the inter-area routing protocol: (i) the multi-area topology is restricted to a two-level hierarchy, and (ii) globally optimal routing may not be achieved. In this letter, we propose an OSPF extension that overcomes these limitations by adopting a link state inter-area routing protocol. The extension applies to both OSPFv2 (IPv4) and OSPFv3 (IPv6), and is fully transparent to area-internal routers. Despite its simplicity, this extension may have a large impact in the operation of the current Internet.

Abstract:This paper proposes an formal approach to conformance testing for OSPF v2, a widely used distributed routing protocol in the Internet. The routing function is performed in a distributed system, thus the testing is more complex than the traditional peer-to-peer protocol. The concurrent TTCN is a test notation that can handle concurrent test behavior and it is suitable for the routing function testing. We first discuss a concurrent TTCN based OSPF test architecture. Then we formally define and implement a concurrent TTCN based test system based on an extension of the LTS (labelled transition system). Finally, we present a specification model, the CEBE, to specify an OSPF entity and to generate (combine the data and control flow) test suite.

Abstract:Traffic engineering is one of the most important applications of MPLS technology.IETF work group proposed QoS routing mechanisms and OSPF extensions(RFC2676) to support MPLS traffic engineering.The two routing algorithms recommended by RFC2676 were implemented in ns(network simulator).Simulation results were compared to show the advantages of the two new algo-rithms over traditional SPF algorithm.Disadvantages of the two algorithms were also pointed out.

Abstract:Multipath Optimized Link State Routing Protocol (MP-OLSR) is a multipath extension of OLSR, a well knows proactive routing protocol developed especially for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). To find multiple paths, MP-OLSR uses the multipath Dijkstra's algorithm. The algorithm obtains considerable flexibility and scalability by using the cost functions, route recovery and loop detection mechanisms in order to improve MANETs performances. However, MP-OLSR presents some drawbacks. First, data packets are distributed into different paths by using Round-Robin (RR) scheduling algorithm. RR is incapable to balance load among heterogeneous multiple paths. Second, the cost functions return fixed values without adaptability to network conditions. To overcome these drawbacks, we proposed, in this paper, to integrate Weighted Round-Robin (WRR) scheduling algorithm to MP-OLSR for supporting heterogeneous multiple paths with different hop count. And, we proposed also a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to adapt the cost functions as function of hop count metric. Implementation and simulation experiments with Network Simulator NS2 are presented in order to validate our proposed goals. The results show that our enhanced MP-OLSR outperforms original MP-OLSR in terms of packet delivery ratio, end to end delay, jitter and routing cost.

Abstract:This paper proposes a formal approach to conformance testing for OSPF v2, a widely used distributed routing protocol in Internet. Routing is performed in a distributed way, and, consequently, testing is more involved. For routing function testing concurrent TTCN handles concurrent test behaviors and is suitable for our needs. We first discuss a concurrent TTCN based OSPF test architecture. Then we present a specification model CEBE to specify an OSPF entity and to generate (combine the data and control flow) test suite. Finally, we design and implement a concurrent TTCN based test system to test OSPF implementations.
An Improved Version of the OSPF Routing Protocol Designed for Large-Scale Polar Orbit Constellations

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved version of the Open Shortest Path First routing protocol (OSPF) specially designed for large-scale polar orbit constellations. To make the protocol run with less overhead, we propose three modifications including the Orbit Area division, the Link State Database preset, and the Neighbor State Machine improvement. With these improvements, the limitation that the backbone areas must be logically continuous and non-backbone areas must be directly connected to the backbone area is removed, making the number of satellites inside each area smaller and reducing the computational overhead. In addition, redundant routing messages about the periodic motion of satellites are removed as much as possible. Simulation results show that the improved protocol can complete routing recalculation and convergence in less time, and the route stability is close to 100%. In large-scale polar orbit constellations, the improved protocol can still operate efficiently even with frequent link switching and route recalculation.

Abstract:Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a multi-vendor routing standard. Any routing protocol's goal is to discover the optimum path between source and destination addresses inside a computer network. Other routing protocols include Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), and IS-IS. which are also used in computer networking. Each routing protocol has different set of rules through which they calculate the best path selection. OSPF is often used with the combination of these routing protocol because of its flexible design. This research focuses on the implementation of OSPF network cost (metric) value for best path calculation using network simulation tool like GNS3 for getting correct outcome just like a real networking device working in a live production environment. This research would use the different combinations of OSPF cost calculation using metric-types for external routes learned from different routing protocols like RIP. Being able to accurately identify cost (metric) values obtain by testing for OSPF when used with other routing protocols, just like a real-world environment.

Abstract:Summary Connectivity in satellite networks is governed by the spacecraft nodes' orbital dynamics together with the planet's continuous rotation where ground nodes are located. The resulting time‐dynamic but predictable topology demands the design of specific distributed routing schemes. However, terrestrial Internet routing schemes' maturity, proven scalability, and efficiency shall be leveraged whenever possible to facilitate space‐terrestrial integration while reducing risk and costs. In line with this reflection, we introduce SATNET‐OSPF: a backward‐compatible satellite extension for the widely used Open Shortest Path First routing protocol. The key features of SATNET‐OSPF are (a) accurate routing interface mapping to inter‐satellite links and ground‐to‐satellite links, (b) accelerated link‐up/link‐down event detection adapted to space‐specific wireless technologies, (c) proactive routing and forwarding mechanism to take advantage of predicted link‐down events, and (d) low memory footprint topology model to efficiently propagate the forthcoming space connectivity events via constrained telecommand links. Leveraging existing IPv6 and OSPFv3 open‐source stacks, we implemented SATNET‐OSPF in an actual space router comprising a space‐grade SPARC V8 CPU and a radiation‐hardened FPGA. Furthermore, we present the details of an emulation test bench supporting various configurations with COTS terrestrial OSPF routers that enabled a realistic performance evaluation of the SATNET‐OSPF. Results show that SATNET‐OSPF reduced OSPFv3 routing protocol overhead by up to 31%; shortened the link event detection delay by four orders of magnitude; decreased the routing outage by a factor of 22; and ensured flooding control message generation and forwarding times, as well as routing computing time, satisfy the original requirements (192, 37, and 17 ms, respectively).

Abstract:Computer networks are based on technology that provides the technical infrastructure where routing protocols are used to transmit packets over the Internet. Routing protocols define how routers communicate with each other by distributing information. They are used to describe how routers communicate with each other, learn available routes, build routing tables, make routing decisions, and share information between neighbors. The main purpose of routing protocols is to determine the best route from source to destination. A particular case of a routing protocol operating within an autonomous system is called an internal routing protocol (IGP – Interior Gateway Protocol). The article analyzes the problem of correctly choosing a routing protocol. Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) are considered leading routing protocols for real-time applications. For this they are chosen to be studied. The main objective of the study is to compare the proposed routing protocols and to evaluate them based on different performance indicators. This assessment is carried out theoretically – by analyzing their characteristics and action, and practically – through simulation experiments. After the study of the literature, the simulation scenarios and quantitative indicators by which the performance of the protocols is compared are defined. First, a network model with OSPF is designed and simulated using the OPNET Modeler simulator. Second, EIGRP is implemented in the same network scenario and a new simulation is done. The implementation of the scenarios shall collect the necessary results and analyze the operation of the two protocols. The data shall be derived and an assessment and conclusion shall be made against the defined quantitative indicators.

Abstract:OSPFv3 is one of the widely used intra-area routing protocols in IPv6.Aiming the problem of the routing monitoring for OSPFv3,this paper designs and implements a routing monitor system based on passively listening OSPFv3 network.By collecting packets from the target network,it can statistic and analyze the OSPF packets,display current and history topology,compare current topology with standard or history topology.Experimental results show that this method can work effectively,and achieves the expected results.

Abstract:Currently, Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) has drawn great attention for being part of the ubiquitous network. Unlike the conventional network, MANETs have many unique features such as node resource constraint. That is why several efficient routing protocols have been proposed specifically for MANETs. Among these protocols, Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) is one of the four important routing protocol identified by IETF. The current OLSR protocol assumes that all nodes are trusted. However, in hostile environment, the OLSR is known to be vulnerable to various kinds of malicious attacks. In this paper, we propose a new Security Aware Optimized Link State Routing (SA-OLSR) which is a secured version of current OLSR. Our approach is based on exchanging acknowledgement between 2-hop neighbors when the control traffic is successfully received. The main advantage of our approach is that it can protect against many sophisticated attacks such as link spoofing, colluding misrelay attack, and wormhole attack without requiring any location information as well as the knowledge of complete network topology. Our simulation results show that the proposed solution can achieve higher packet delivery ratio compared to the network using the standard OLSR in the presence of malicious nodes.
Stress testing of OSPF protocol implementation based on large-scale routing simulation

Abstract:The stability and robustness of routing protocol implementations (RPI) in a router are becoming more and more important with the growth of the Internet. This paper proposes a novel approach named stress testing to evaluate routing protocols, which treats RPI as a black box without any assumptions. Compared with some traditional testing techniques, the architecture of stress testing is proposed. We use a stochastic Petri net model to describe the test process of OSPF RPI with the OSPF protocol emulation and the highspeed interaction of many simulated routes. Based on this model, we have developed an "integrated performance tester" as a test bed, with which we evaluated the running characteristics of a CISCO2600 router. Analyzing the test results with mathematical methods, we obtained that the computational complexity of OSPF RPI in this router is O((InN) 4) to the number of its routing table entries. We have also given the upper bound of the network scale it supports. This experiment shows that stress testing can be widely used to inspect the stability, scalability and adaptability of other RPI, e.g. RIP, BGP. © 2002 IEEE.

Abstract:Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging network control paradigm focused on logical centralization and programmability. At the same time, distributed routing protocols, most notably OSPF and IS-IS, are still prevalent in IP networks, as they provide shortest path routing, fast topological convergence after network failures, and, perhaps most importantly, the confidence based on decades of reliable operation. Therefore, a hybrid SDN/OSPF operation remains a desirable proposition. In this paper, we propose a new method of hybrid SDN/OSPF operation. Our method is different from other hybrid approaches, as it uses SDN nodes to partition an OSPF domain into sub-domains thereby achieving the traffic engineering capabilities comparable to full SDN operation. We place SDN-enabled routers as sub-domain border nodes, while the operation of the OSPF protocol continues unaffected. In this way, the SDN controller can tune routing protocol updates for traffic engineering purposes before they are flooded into sub-domains. While local routing inside sub-domains remains stable at all times, inter-sub-domain routes can be optimized by determining the routes in each traversed sub-domain. As the majority of traffic in non-trivial topologies has to traverse multiple sub-domains, our simulation results confirm that a few SDN nodes allow traffic engineering up to a degree that renders full SDN deployment unnecessary.
