Abstract:We study raw coding of trajectories of a chaotic dynamical system by sequences of elements from a finite alphabet and show that there is a fundamental constraint on differences between codes corresponding to different trajectories of the dynamical system.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamics of elementary cellular automata rule 42 is investigated in the bi-infinite symbolic sequence space. Rule 42, a member of Wolfram's class II which was said to be simply as periodic before, actually defines a chaotic global attractor; that is, rule 42 is topologically mixing on its global attractor and possesses the positive topological entropy. Therefore, rule 42 is chaotic in the sense of both Li-Yorke and Devaney. Meanwhile, the characteristic function and the basin tree diagram of rule 42 are explored for some finite length of binary strings, which reveal its Bernoulli characteristics. The method presented in this work is also applicable to studying the dynamics of other rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules of the elementary cellular automata.

Abstract:Based on the word-lift technique of symbolic dynamics of one-dimensional unimodal maps, we investigate the relation between chaotic kneading sequences and linear maximum-length shift-register sequences. Theoretical and numerical evidence that the set of the maximum-length shift-register sequences is a subset of the set of the universal sequence of one-dimensional chaotic unimodal maps is given. By stabilizing unstable periodic orbits on superstable periodic orbits, we also develop techniques to control the generation of long binary sequences.

Abstract:Any continuous curve in a higher dimensional space can be considered a trajectory that can be parameterized by a single variable, usually taken as time. It is well known that a continuous curve can have a fractional dimensionality, which can be estimated using already standard algorithms. However, characterizing a trajectory from an entropic perspective is far less developed. The search for such characterization leads us to use chain coding to discretize the description of a curve. Calculating the entropy density and entropy-related magnitudes from the resulting finite alphabet code becomes straightforward. In such a way, the entropy of a trajectory can be defined and used as an effective tool to assert creativity and pattern formation from a Shannon perspective. Applying the procedure to actual experimental physiological data and modelled trajectories of astronomical dynamics proved the robustness of the entropic characterization in a wealth of trajectories of different origins and the insight that can be gained from its use.

Abstract:This paper presents a general method for signal coding and its applications based on the symbolic sequence: chaotic coding based on symbolic sequence (CCBSS). Theoretical analysis and typical simulation results are presented to show that the symbolic dynamics-based coding is potentially attractive in many engineering contexts. A novel method based on CCBSS, which is used for A/D with high precision resolution speed and robustness, is derived and discussed in this paper

Abstract:We introduce new machine-learning techniques for analyzing chaotic dynamical systems. The primary objectives of the study include the development of a new and simple method for calculating the Lyapunov exponent using only two trajectory data points unlike traditional methods that require an averaging procedure, the exploration of phase transition graphs from regular periodic to chaotic dynamics to identify "almost integrable" trajectories where conserved quantities deviate from whole numbers, and the identification of "integrable regions" within chaotic trajectories. These methods are applied and tested on two dynamical systems: "Two objects moving on a rod" and the "Henon-Heiles" systems.

Abstract:We present a universal algorithm for transforming chaotic sequences of either chaotic map systems or chaotic differential dynamic systems into uniform pseudo-random sequences. Theoretically，the algorithm is based on bit-operations represented by floating-point algorithm，not aiming at any definite physical chaotic systems. It has been proved that，any real random variable generally has a type of natural tendency of homogenization which exponentially increases bitwise with random variable. As a result，any real chaotic sequence can be completely transformed into the pseudo-random sequence having uniform identical independent distribution. Adopting logistic map，Hénon map and Lorenz system as examples to test the universal validity of the algorithm，respectively，the experiments demonstrate that the algorithm is correct. We can reasonably expect that the universally valid algorithm should become the technological basis of standardized modular design of chaotic pseudo-random sequence generator in hardware implementation.
A new chaotic image encryption algorithm based on dynamic DNA coding and RNA computing

Abstract:In order to improve the complexity of the chaotic system and ensure the relevant security indicators of the cryptographic algorithm, a new chaotic image encryption algorithm based on dynamic DNA coding and RNA computing is proposed. In this paper, we first construct a four-dimensional hyperchaotic system with more complex dynamics and then use the plaintext-related keystream generated by the hyperchaotic system to dynamically DNA encode the plaintext image, then perform RNA coding conversion and amino acid substitution box generation, and finally use an improved replacement sequence generator to generate pseudo-random sequences for replacement operations to generate the final ciphertext image. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has excellent performance in security indicators such as key space, the number of pixels change rate, the number average changing intensity, entropy, clipping attack, noise attack, and chosen plaintext attack. Therefore, the algorithm has higher security.

Abstract:Based on symbol dynamics in 1-D piecewise linear mapping chaotic systems, an arithmetic method processing chaotic signals is studied in the paper, including addition, subtraction and multiplication. The operational rules are calculated and proved according to a definition of the distance between two chaotic sequences. By computer simulation with convolution sum of FIR digital filter, the results show that the model is the same as traditional binary coding arithmetic, which can be used in chaotic signal processing systems.

Abstract:DNA sequences are fundamental for encoding genetic information. The genetic information may not only be understood by symbolic sequences but also from the hidden signals inside the sequences. The symbolic sequences need to be transformed into numerical sequences so the hidden signals can be revealed by signal processing techniques. All current transformation methods encode DNA sequences into numerical values of the same length. These representations have limitations in the applications of genomic signal compression, encryption, and steganography. We propose an integer chaos game representation (iCGR) of DNA sequences and a lossless encoding method DNA sequences by the iCGR. In the iCGR method, a DNA sequence is represented by the iterated function of the nucleotides and their positions in the sequence. Then the DNA sequence can be uniquely encoded and recovered using three integers from iCGR. One integer is the sequence length and the other two integers represent the accumulated distributions of nucleotides in the sequence. The integer encoding scheme can compress a DNA sequence by 2 bits per nucleotide. The integer representation of DNA sequences provides a prospective tool for sequence compression, encryption, and steganography. Abstract:In my book "Algorithmic Information Theory" I explain how I constructed a million-character equation that proves that there is randomness in arithmetic. My book only includes a few pages from the monster equation, and omits the software used to construct it. This software has now been rewritten in Mathematica. The Mathematica software for my book, and its input, are here in their entirety. The Mathematica code is remarkably compact, but it sometimes is slow. So one C program plus equipment for automatically generating another is also included in this software package.

Abstract:To investigate the mechanism of chaotic phenomena, we conduct a research on the dynamics of one-dimensional chaotic maps. In this paper, we construct a topological tool which applies to general multimodal maps for the first time. Then we analyze the dynamics of critical orbits with this tool, revealing that the critical orbits behave somewhat periodically. We analogize the iteration of maps to a one-sided shift, and give a probability explanation of Lyapunov exponent by Ergodic Theory, which provides a numerical computation method to calculate this exponent.

Abstract:The phenomenon of Chaos can be observed extensively in both nature and human society. The fundamental characteristic of chaotic behavior is its unstable trajectory, and the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, so it is also referred as the butterfly effect. How to exploit the beneficial aspect of Chaos has become an important part of nonlinear science. In this paper, the issues of application of Chaos theory to error control coding are addressed. As the interleaver and parity-check matrix respectively play a critical component in Turbo codes and LDPC codes, we conduct the research on the application of chaotic theory to the design of them. We present the improved designing methods of interleaver and parity check matrix according to the immanent randomness of the Henon chaotic model for Turbo codes and LDPC codes respectively. Simulation results show that the Henon method can yield higher coding gain compared with the traditional Turbo codes and LDPC codes, showing that Henon chaotic model a good tool for constructing good codes.
A Smoothed Analysis of the Space Complexity of Computing a Chaotic Sequence

Abstract:This work is motivated by a question whether it is possible to calculate a chaotic sequence efficiently, e.g., is it possible to get the $n$-th bit of a bit sequence generated by a chaotic map, such as $\beta$-expansion, tent map and logistic map in $\mathrm{o}(n)$ time/space? This paper gives an affirmative answer to the question about the space complexity of a tent map. We show that the decision problem of whether a given bit sequence is a valid tent code is solved in $\mathrm{O}(\log^{2} n)$ space in a sense of the smoothed complexity.

Abstract:This extended abstract presents a new class of codes, chaotic turbo codes, which can be used in chaotic secure communication for mobile systems. In our research, the conventional turbo codes and chaotic digital encoder are implemented together in an effective way. After a lot of simulation, we found that chaotic turbo codes bring some important properties to both turbo codes and chaotic secure communication. We have also made great efforts into developing and evaluating some practical chaotic iterative decoding algorithms for efficient exploitation.

Abstract:We study ergodic-theoretic properties of coded shift spaces. A coded shift space is defined as a closure of all bi-infinite concatenations of words from a fixed countable generating set. We derive sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of measures of maximal entropy and equilibrium states of Hoelder continuous potentials based on the partition of the coded shift into its concatenation set (sequences that are concatenations of generating words) and its residual set (sequences added under the closure). In this case we provide a simple explicit description of the measure of maximal entropy. We also obtain flexibility results for the entropy on the concatenation and residual sets. Finally, we prove a local structure theorem for intrinsically ergodic coded shift spaces which shows that our results apply to a larger class of coded shift spaces compared to previous works by Climenhaga, Climenhaga and Thompson, and Pavlov.

Abstract:This essay, derived from a lecture at "The Physics Modeling of Thought" workshop in Berlin in winter 2023, explores the mutually beneficial relationship between theoretical neuroscience and statistical physics through the lens of efficient coding and computation in cortical circuits. It highlights how the study of neural networks has enhanced our understanding of complex, nonequilibrium, and disordered systems, while also demonstrating how neuroscientific challenges have spurred novel developments in physics. The paper traces the evolution of ideas from seminal work on chaos in random neural networks to recent developments in efficient coding and the partial suppression of chaotic fluctuations. Abstract:The problem of statistical inference for open chaotic systems measured with error is complicated by the interaction of the uncertainty introduced by chaos, and the various sources of random or external variation. Here a method of representing measured data from large open chaotic systems subject to error as collections of threads of plausible pseudo future histories to enable statistical analysis is described. This representation provides asymptotically consistent predictive distributions, for use in developing predictive likelihood methods which: 1. provide a framework for variable selection, 2. provide a framework for Bayesian updating, so for example 4 season ahead predictions learn naturally as the 3rd season ahead is measured. 3. allows examination of conditional scenarios along the future histories for planning purposes. 4. allows the ranking of variable, delay combinations with higher signal to noise ratio.

Network analysis of chaotic dynamics in fixed-precision digital domain

Abstract:When implemented in the digital domain with time, space and value discretized in the binary form, many good dynamical properties of chaotic systems in continuous domain may be degraded or even diminish. To measure the dynamic complexity of a digital chaotic system, the dynamics can be transformed to the form of a state-mapping network. Then, the parameters of the network are verified by some typical dynamical metrics of the original chaotic system in infinite precision, such as Lyapunov exponent and entropy. This article reviews some representative works on the network-based analysis of digital chaotic dynamics and presents a general framework for such analysis, unveiling some intrinsic relationships between digital chaos and complex networks. As an example for discussion, the dynamics of a state-mapping network of the Logistic map in a fixed-precision computer is analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Numerical encoding plays an important role in DNA sequence analysis via computational methods, in which numerical values are associated with corresponding symbolic characters. After numerical representation, digital signal processing methods can be exploited to analyze DNA sequences. To reflect the biological properties of the original sequence, it is vital that the representation is one-to-one. Chaos Game Representation (CGR) is an iterative mapping technique that assigns each nucleotide in a DNA sequence to a respective position on the plane that allows the depiction of the DNA sequence in the form of image. Using CGR, a biological sequence can be transformed one-to-one to a numerical sequence that preserves the main features of the original sequence. In this research, we propose to encode DNA sequences by considering 2D CGR coordinates as complex numbers, and apply digital signal processing methods to analyze their evolutionary relationship. Computational experiments indicate that this approach gives comparable results to the state-of-the-art multiple sequence alignment method, Clustal Omega, and is significantly faster.
