Abstract:We have applied different analytical techniques for studying the size and metal composition of nanoparticles (NPs) and microparticles in tattoo inks. The morphology and size distribution of particles were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). These techniques allowed us to obtain size information on all particles in tattoo mixtures. Higher resolution characterization of the size distributions was achieved by means of asymmetric flow field fractionation (AF4) combined with multi-angle light scattering (MALS) detection, which allowed for particle fraction separation and sizing. The high sensitivity and multi-elemental capability of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) enabled the off-line determination of the metal concentration of the particles in the AF4 fractions. Counting and sizing of particles were also performed by single particle (SP)-ICP-MS. The TEM images of the tattoo inks indicated the presence of individual particles and of aggregates and agglomerates of different shapes; carbon black was recognized in black inks and TiO2 in lighter shades. The DLS measurements showed that the inks were polydispersed with particles continuously distributed from tens to hundreds of nanometers (the Z-average hydrodynamic diameter range was 31–421 nm). The use of AF4 revealed the presence of two different fractions of particles in colored inks and one fraction in black inks, with mean sizes ranging from ca. 50 nm to ca. 400 nm. AF4 and off-line ICP-MS analyses of these fractions showed micronic and sub-micronic Al and Ti particles and Cu at the nanometer level (<100 nm). SP-ICP-MS analysis confirmed these latter findings: the inks contained nanosized materials of Cu (such as CuO or Cu-phthalocyanine), while Al (as Al2O3) and Ti (as TiO2) were detected as larger sized particles. Overall, this work confirms the power of different analytical techniques in detecting and characterizing NPs and microparticles in tattoo inks. We show that tattoo ink suspensions unquestionably contain NPs, suggesting the need for an assessment of how they interact with human skin as well as if they can penetrate the derma to reach the bloodstream.

Abstract:This review presents an overview on the application of latent fingerprint development techniques in forensic sciences. At present, traditional developing methods such as powder dusting, cyanoacrylate fuming, chemical method, and small particle reagent method, have all been gradually compromised given their emerging drawbacks such as low contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity, as well as high toxicity. Recently, much attention has been paid to the use of fluorescent nanomaterials including quantum dots (QDs) and rare earth upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials (UCNMs) due to their unique optical and chemical properties. Thus, this review lays emphasis on latent fingerprint development based on QDs and UCNMs. Compared to latent fingerprint development by traditional methods, the new methods using fluorescent nanomaterials can achieve high contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity while showing reduced toxicity. Overall, this review provides a systematic overview on such methods.
Determination of the thermal and physical properties of black tattoo ink using compound analysis

Abstract:Despite the widespread use of laser therapy in the removal of tattoos, comparatively little is known about its mechanism of action. There is a need for an improved understanding of the composition and thermal properties of the tattoo ink in order that simulations of laser therapy may be better informed and treatment parameters optimised. Scanning electron microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry identified that the relative proportions of the constituent compounds of the ink likely to exist in vivo are the following: carbon black pigment (89 %), carvacrol (5 %), eugenol (2 %), hexenol (3 %) and propylene glycol (1 %). Chemical compound property tables identify that changes in phase of these compounds lead to a considerable reduction in the density and thermal conductivity of the ink and an increase in its specific heat as temperature increases. These temperature-dependent values of density, thermal conductivity and specific heat are substantially different to the constant values, derived from water or graphite at a fixed temperature, which have been applied in the simulations of laser therapy as previously described in the literature. Accordingly, the thermal properties of black tattoo ink described in this study provide valuable information that may be used to improve simulations of tattoo laser therapy.
Determining line-crossing sequences between laser printing and black ink using digital microscopy: The influence of writing tool and toner

Abstract:One of the recurring issues in forensic document analysis is determining the chronological order of line-crossing sequences. This seemingly simple but tricky task allows forensic laboratories to demonstrate the real order of events. The aim of this work is to analyse black ink/toner intersections using the digital microscope Hirox RH-2000. Five types of pens (ballpoint, gel, rollerball, fountain and fineliner) as well as five different laser printers were used to create the samples. Forensic examiners were tasked with assessing toner fractures, the bronzing effect, and gaps. The findings were analysed to determine the importance of each characteristic for each type of pen. Results indicate that observing the bronzing effect at high magnification (700x) is crucial for establishing the sequence order of application. In this regard, the fineliner pen is considered the most challenging type of pen to analyse in a black ink/toner intersection. The method was validated through a blind test. Based on this, a flow chart has been developed to assist the Forensic Document Examiners (FDEs) in their evaluations. The flow chart emphasises the significance of combining multiple observations and enables a more objective analysis for trained FDEs.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was tested for all of the relevant issues in forensic examinations of commercial inks, including classification of pen inks on one paper type and on different paper types, determination of the deposition order of layered inks, and analysis of signatures and toners on one questioned document. The scope of this work was to determine the potential of a single LIBS setup that is compatible with portable instruments for different types of ink analysis, rather than building a very large database for inks and papers. We identified up to seven metals characteristic for the examined inks, which allowed to fully discriminate all eight black inks on one type of printing paper. When the inks were tested on ten different papers, the correct classification rates for some of them were reduced for reasons thoroughly studied and explained. The replicated tests on three crossing points, each one involving a pair of blue or black inks, were successful in five cases out of six. In the test simulating documents of forensic interest (questioned documents), LIBS was able to correctly identify the differences in three inks used for signatures on one of the three pages and the use of different printing inks on each page of the document.

Abstract:Elemental analysis, using either LA-ICP-MS or LIBS, can be used for the chemical characterization of materials of forensic interest to discriminate between source materials originating from different sources and also for the association of materials known to originate from the same source. In this study, a tandem LIBS/LA-ICP-MS system that combines the benefits of both LIBS and LA-ICP-MS was evaluated for the characterization of samples of printing inks (toners, inkjets, intaglio and offset.). The performance of both laser sampling methods is presented. A subset of 9 black laser toners, 10 colored (CMYK) inkjet samples, 12 colored (CMYK) offset samples and 12 intaglio inks originating from different manufacturing sources were analyzed to evaluate the discrimination capability of the tandem method. These samples were selected because they presented a very similar elemental profile by LA-ICP-MS. Although typical discrimination between different ink sources is found to be >99% for a variety of inks when only LA-ICP-MS was used for the analysis, additional discrimination was achieved by combining the elemental results from the LIBS analysis to the LA-ICP-MS analysis in the tandem technique, enhancing the overall discrimination capability of the individual laser ablation methods. The LIBS measurements of the Ca, Fe, K and Si signals, in particular, improved the discrimination for this specific set of different ink samples previously shown to exhibit very similar LA-ICP-MS elemental profiles. The combination of these two techniques in a single setup resulted in better discrimination of the printing inks with two distinct fingerprint spectra, providing information from atomic/ionic emissions and isotopic composition (m/z) for each ink sample.

Abstract:An important requisite for the forensic analysis of inks on documents is that damage to the document is avoided or minimised. This paper describes a technique for dye identification in ballpoint pen inks using LDI-TOFMS on single ink bearing paper fibres and its application to a case. A single ink bearing paper fibre can be prised from the surface of the document under a stereo microscope and presented to the instrument for analysis without further treatment. This sampling process causes imperceptible damage to the surface of the document. Clear mass spectrometric identification of the ink dyes is obtained. A case example is provided to illustrate the practical application of the technique.

Abstract:Visible light reflectance spectra were taken from signatures inscribed with five different inks of five different ball-point pens by a modular portable Vis-NIR spectrophotometer with PC. The ink-analysis procedure was nondestructive, consisting of visible reflectance spectra acquisition from multiple designated sampling spots of each signature, using a customized reflection probe holder and a tungsten white light source. Sampling spots were preselected to partly cover the signature ink-line on the white background (paper). The repeatable reflectance spectra ( R %), recorded and plotted for each ink, which is subject of this study, appeared with typical spectral features (extrema) for each tested ink. To determine another characteristic spectral feature for ink discrimination, such as inflexion points specific to the absorption edges, a numerical derivative of the first order was calculated for the average R % spectrum of each ink. The wavelengths at which the typical features appear were used for Vis-NIR codification of each ink for discrimination purposes. A different code could be assigned for each ink, using the description of the "general feature," the extrema, and the inflexion points from the reflectance spectrum. This method can be used as a nondestructive tool for ink identification for forensic purposes.
Tattoo Pigments Are Localized Intracellularly in the Epidermis and Dermis of Fresh and Old Tattoos: In vivo Study Using Two-Photon Excited Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging

Abstract:Background: The knowledge about the location and kinetics of tattoo pigments in human skin after application and during the recovery is restricted due to the limitation of in vivo methods for visualizing pigments. Here, the localization and distribution of tattoo ink pigments in freshly and old tattooed human skin during the regeneration of the epidermis and dermis were investigated in vivo. Methods: Two-photon excited fluorescence lifetime imaging (TPE-FLIM) was used to identify tattoo ink pigments in human skin in vivo down to the reticular dermis. One subject with a freshly applied tattoo and 10 subjects with tattoos applied over 3 years ago were investigated in the epidermal and dermal layers in vivo. One histological slide of tattooed skin was used to localize skin-resident tattoo pigment using light microscopy. Results: The carbon black particles deposited around the incision have still been visible 84 days after tattoo application, showing delayed recovery of the epidermis. The TPE-FLIM parameters of carbon black tattoo ink pigments were found to be different to all skin components except for melanin. Distinction from melanin in the skin was based on higher fluorescence intensity and agglomerate size. Using TPE-FLIM in vivo tattoo pigment was found in 75% of tattoos applied up to 9 years ago in the epidermis within keratinocytes, dendritic cells, and basal cells and in the dermis within the macrophages, mast cells, and fibroblasts. Loading of highly fluorescent carbon black particles enables in vivo imaging of dendritic cells in the epidermis and fibroblasts in the dermis, which cannot be visualized in native conditions. The collagen I structures showed a higher directionality similar to scar tissue resulting in a greater firmness and decreased elasticity of the tattooed skin. Conclusions: Here, we show the kinetics and location of carbon black tattoo ink pigment immediately after application for the first time in vivo in human skin. Carbon black particles are located exclusively intracellularly in the skin of fresh and old tattoos. They are found within macrophages, mast cells, and fibroblasts in the dermis and within keratinocytes, dendritic cells, and basal cells in the continuously renewed epidermis even in 9-year-old tattoos in skin showing no inflammation.

Abstract:<p>In the present work, laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to differentiate between different black toners of printers and photocopiers based on their elemental composition. Measurements were performed on 23 toner samples of different printers and six different photocopiers (of different brands and models). The LIBS spectra were compared to characterize each toner type. Multivariate statistical analysis based on PCA and graph clustering was used to develop a discrimination model between the toners in questioned documents. Good discrimination of both brand and model toners was obtained. The results may be beneficial for forensic applications in the investigations of questioned documents.</p>

Abstract:This study investigated various chemical imaging methods for the forensic analysis of paints, tapes and adhesives, inks and firearm propellants (absorption and photoluminescence in the UV-vis-NIR regions). Results obtained using chemical imaging technology were compared with those obtained using traditional techniques. The results show that chemical imaging offers significant advantages in the forensic context, for example the ability to display visual and spectral results side by side and to reduce sample preparation, hence minimizing the risk of contamination. Chemical imaging produced a greater discriminating power than traditional techniques for most evidence types. Chemical imaging also eliminated different brands of ammunition based on the fluorescence characteristics of the propellant grains preserving the evidence for further analysis. It is expected that this technology will find broader forensic applications in the future.
Study of Vis-NIR and NIR spectral data of black inkjet prints using principal component analysis for forensic discrimination

Abstract:The aim of this work was to prepare spectral data for principal component analysis and to examine 19 samples of six different brands. Samples consisted of the same type of office paper with black areas printed in black ink only. The spectral data were acquired by fibre optics reflection spectroscopy in Vis-NIR and only NIR (Vis-NIR FORS) directly on paper. The black inkjet-printed samples were analysed with regard to the forensic analysis of documents. The method used is based on the combination of molecular spectroscopy in the visible (Vis) and near infrared region (NIR) combined with a chemometric method, – principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA method divides the inkjet inks sample into clusters. It was found out that by a combination of spectrum pre-processing methods and principal component analysis, it is possible to separate inks containing carbon black from the other inks using other organic colourants. This method appears to be a useful tool for forensic examination of printed documents containing inkjet inks. Spectra of inkjet inks were acquired without any destructive or invasive procedure, for example cutting sample or for extraction with the possibility to measure out of the laboratory.

Abstract:Tattoo-associated cutaneous reactions have become quite frequent given the increasing percentage of tattooed subjects globally and also in Italy. On the other hand, the increasing use of target therapy is showing the ability of these drugs to affect the immune system and also cause adverse tattoo-related reactions. In this paper, we report a case of a 42-year-old patient with stage-IIID melanoma undergoing treatment with Dabrafenib and Trametinib. The patient reported erythema, oedema and scaling in areas of the body containing a black tattoo, and, conversely, no signs and/or symptoms in areas with tattoos of a different color. Histopathological and immunohistochemical features indicated a lympho-histiocytic reaction with a granulomatous morphology, mainly distributed around the vessels and hair adnexa. By discussing the cases reported in the literature prior to ours, we concluded and provided the possible indications of the pathogenesis.

The challenges and limitations of chemical analysis of particulate pigments of very low solubility

Abstract:When performing a chemical analysis of colorants in tattoo products, specific degradation products as well as impurity patterns can be predicted. Mislabeling or false declarations can also be avoided using this test. It is notable that pigment identification in tattoo products may serve as a precursory technique to recognize the colorants contained in a patient's tattoo prior to laser removal therapy. In contrast to the analysis of banned pigments, positive identification of pigments will normally require few reference substances. Given the fact that tattoo pigments are nearly insoluble in water and many organic solvents, different chemical pigment analyses are outlined and evaluated. Related publications from the study of art are also mentioned. It is recommended that access to comprehensive pigment standards and spectroscopic databanks should be offered to laboratories dealing with tattoo product analysis in the future.

Abstract:The present study entitled “PROFILING OF INKJET PRINTER INKS FROM PRINTED DOCUMENTS BY USING INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUES” was conducted in the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (Hyderabad and Chandigarh), Forensic Science Laboratory (Hyderabad and Delhi), and Geological Survey of India (Hyderabad) to analyze the printed document samples printed from inkjet printers of four leading brands (HP, Canon, Epson and Brother) collected randomly from the local markets of Hyderabad, Allahabad, Agra and Delhi. Different techniques namely Video Spectral Comparator (VSC), Fourier Transform-Infra Red Spectrometry (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry (SEM-EDX), High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), UV-Vis Spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used to analyse the samples. Results of the study are summarized below:The scan of samples from VSC in the visible and partial NIR range (400-1000nm) for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black inks indicated characteristic spectral patterns. Among the same print colour inks of different manufacturer, variations were observed which may be taken into account for forensic comparison. It was observed that the inter manufacturer difference were more in the magenta colour and maximum in black colour. In conclusion the proposed VSC technique can be used for the comparison of various coloured print inks in general and more particularly the black inks. The samples were examined using FTIR Spectrometer in the IR beam ranging from 3500-400 cm -1 wavenumber using microscope and by preparing KBr pellet of ink extract of samples. The same functional groups in the different samples of either same or different brands suggest that the respective samples have a similar chemical composition. The difference between various samples of ink can be seen by observing at the intensity of main peak, the pattern of each spectrum and the absence or presence of some characteristic functional groups. The inorganic trace elemental profile (in weight percentage) of printer inks was obtained by using SEM-EDX. The presence and absence of elements as well as different weight percentage indicates that the respective samples have a similar/different elemental composition. The presence of potassium in few samples differentiate those samples from others. The components of magenta ink extracts were separated and scanned using the densitometer of HPTLC. The different inks from various manufacturers can be differentiated on the basis of retention factor of separated ink components along with their physical appearance under short wave and long wave ultraviolet and visible light. The number of spots obtained for each sample can also link the suspected document with the specimen or in the absence of the questioned printer some idea of the possible manufacturer can also be given. The proposed methodology can be successfully utilized for the examination of questioned colour prints and questioned printers successfully where magenta colour is involved. The absorbance profile of inkjet ink for the differentiation and comparative analysis was obtained by scanning the ink extracts under the wavelength range of 200-700 nm using UV-Visible Spectrophotometer. The various parameters of absorption studies of different components of printer ink formulation in the visible and UV region, after the extraction process enables us to differentiate and distinguish different document samples of distinct composition by their characteristic absorbance spectra and pattern profile. The analytical profiling of ink extracts of different brand of ink was obtained using ICPMS. The analytical profiling of computer inkjet inks for inorganic trace metallic contents can unequivocally differentiate various brands and also between batches because of the inherent differences and variations in raw materials/constituents formulation processes and contamination. The range of detected elements in samples was also given which may allow the easy discrimination of different samples. The discrimination and comparison between various brands of printer inks is possible for forensic document examination purposes with high degree of certainty as the printer inks are multicomponent, based on the proprietary nature for commercial considerations there is qualitative / quantitative variation, which enables discernation. The work carried out has given satisfactory results suitable for forensic document examination and suggests that the techniques are more suitable when the specimen comparison material is available.

The present work aimed to evaluate four synthetic analogues of curcumin as possible IDL developers, and to compare their results with those of carbon black developer, as well as to reach the most adequate parameters in the use of the LTQ and FT-ICR mass spectrometers with the paper spray ionization (PS) source to study the chemical composition of the endogenous substances contained in the IDL. For this, a 24-1 factorial design was developed, where it was verified that the distance and voltage factors were the most influential for the increase in the response of signals, in the analysis of latent fingerprints by PS. Among the detected substances we can mention around 20 fatty acids, and squalene. Finally, four potential developers, synthetic analogues of curcumin, were compared with carbon black developer. The revelation of latent fingerprints occurred efficiently, allowing the visualization of minutiae, such as bifurcation and end of line, making it possible to classify them, according to the Vucetich Fingerprint Classification System.

Abstract:The implementation of regulation for tattoo ink ingredients across Europe has generated the need for analytical methods suitable to identify prohibited compounds. Common challenges of this subject are the poor solubility and the lack of volatility for most pigments and polymers applied in tattoo inks. Here, we present pyrolysis coupled to online gas chromatography and electron impact ionization mass spectrometry (py-GC/MS) as quick and reliable tool for pigment identification using both purified pigments and tattoo ink formulations. Some 36 organic pigments frequently used in tattoo inks were subjected to py-GC/MS with the aim to establish a pyrogram library. To cross-validate pigment identification, 28 commercially available tattoo inks as well as 18 self-made pigment mixtures were analyzed. Pyrograms of inks and mixtures were evaluated by two different means to work out the most reliable and fastest strategy for an otherwise rather time-consuming data review. Using this approach, the declaration of tattoo pigments currently used on the market could be verified. The pyrolysis library presented here is also assumed suitable to predict decomposition patterns of pigments when affected by other degradation scenarios, such as sunlight exposure or laser irradiation. Thus, the consumers’ risk associated with the exposure to toxicologically relevant substances that originate from pigment decomposition in the dermal layers of the skin can be assessed. Differentiation between more or less harmful pigments for this field of application now will become feasible.

Abstract:This study represents a methodology to determine the falsified documents via a combined method of spectroscopic techniques and chemometrics. The techniques of UV-Vis and FTIR-ATR spectroscopies and principal component analysis methods have been applied to black, blue, and red ballpoint pens available in the Türkiye market. The analysis results of the applied spectroscopic techniques were found to be consistent with each other for the examined eleven ink samples from three different brands, and it was observed that FTIR-ATR spectroscopy had higher discriminative power. A dried sample preparation technique developed for small amounts of samples for FTIR-ATR measurements and the increased the sensitivity of FTIR-ATR technique was associated with this sample preparation method. Statistical techniques showed that the UV-Vis technique proves useful outcomes in distinguishing inks according to their colors, whereas the FTIR-ATR technique is valuable for identifying ink brands. Additional analysis of the sub-brand of black inks and falsified old-dated check sample analysis validated that our methodology has the potential to classify and identify ballpoint inks in forensic applications. Due to the limited sample quantity available for analysis in real samples, only FTIR-ATR analysis was possible, and the results demonstrated that document forgery could be detected from small parts of samples in the document. When we look at the overall outcome of this study, a comprehensive methodology enriched with statistical calculations has been proposed that can be applied even in a laboratory with limited resources, having only UV-Vis and FTIR-ATR capabilities.
