Abstract:Function of Building control and analytics, as well as grid-interactive and energy-efficient building operations, rely on building load prediction. Furthermore, electric transmission lines must be sized for a specific maximum power, and overloading will lead towards blackouts or electrical mishaps. As we move closer to a smart grid system, short-term load forecasting has become even more important due to the increasing share of temperature dependent renewable energy sources. . In this work, we proposed a load forecast through the decomposition of the time series using python programming. Many computational models were compared with three different regression models, and the results exhibited the proposed work have improved results with enhanced accuracy levels compared with existing works along with way paves to solve peak load record problem.

Abstract:This paper reviews main forecasting techniques used for power system applications. Available forecasting techniques have been discussed with focus on electricity load and price forecasting as well as wind power prediction. Forecasting problems have been classified based on time frame, application specific area and forecasting techniques. Appropriate examples based on data pertaining to the Victorian electricity market, Australia and the PJM electricity market, U.S.A. are used to demonstrate the functioning of the developed neural network (NN) method based on similar days approach to predict hourly electricity load and price, respectively. The other important problem faced by power system utilities are the variability and non-schedulable nature of wind farm power generation. These inherent characteristics of wind power have both technical and commercial implications for efficient planning and operation of power systems. To address the wind power issues, this paper presents the application of an Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to very short-term wind forecasting utilizing a case study from Tasmania, Australia.

Abstract:Nowadays, the increment of energy demand in the world as well as the development of smart grids and the combination of different types of energy systems have led to the complexity of power systems. On the other hand, ever-expanding energy consumption, development of industry and technology systems, and high penetration of renewable energies have made electricity networks operating in more complex and uncertain conditions. Also, consumers and especially users of sensitive load tend to have access to a reliable and sustainable power supply. Therefore, power producers need a variety of long- and short-term planning methodologies for attaining to sustainable investment, production, and operation. Analysis of traditional power and energy systems requires physical modeling and extensive numerical computation. To analyze the behavior of these systems, advanced metering, and condition monitoring devices and systems are utilized, which generate a huge amount of data. Evaluation of these data is approximately impossible by conventional or numerical methods, and it requires powerful data mining procedures. Regression, classification, and clustering applications of machine learning and deep learning methods are powerful tools to use for dealing with such issues. These procedures can be utilized for load/demand forecasting, renewable energy generation forecasting, demand response evaluation, and power system analysis. Understanding the problem and functioning of each learning methods is, therefore, one of the most important issues in the application of such approaches to solve power system problems. Accordingly, in this chapter, the authors will introduce and discuss selected applications of machine learning and deep learning based on their learning, structure, mode of operation, and application in the load forecasting of power systems. Literature review on machine learning and deep learning applications in load forecasting will be presented in this chapter.

Abstract:Load forecasting has become a very important parameter in modem power systems. These smart power systems require flexibility, smooth operation, scalability, and better demand-side management. Thus, making load forecasting is an essential thing. However, accurate load forecasting is a very challenging task as it involves variables such as the number of devices in the residential household and their many types, time, season, area, and occupants' behavior. In this study, a comparative analysis has been performed between different machine learning and deep learning-based residential load forecasting models. These models are trained based on the dataset of an Estonian household and they are tested, and forecasting has been made for a day-ahead load. Based on the simulation results, it was observed that Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based algorithms give more accurate forecasting as it showed the lowest lower Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value compared to other algorithms.

Abstract:A thermal power plant is valuable in the current energy infrastructure because it provides power and heat to their respective consumers. The electrical industry must operate properly. Several machine learning methods have been developed to reduce the complexity of electric load. This paper reviews various electricity load forecasting models with machine learning methods. The researcher used ML techniques to predict the load demand and outcome before it happened. ML is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) focused on studying and developing mathematical algorithms for data understanding. It discusses various applications and the most popular techniques for enhancing the performance and accuracy of the models. This review paper will provide an effective solution for load forecasting in thermal power plants by hybrid machine learning methods. For this review, reference papers are selected from 2020 to 2023. This research identifies gaps in current ML applications and predicts future scope and development methods.

Abstract:The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into smart grids provides major issues and prospects for effective energy management. This research examines the actual utilization of machine learning models to forecast and manage EV demand in smart grids, intended to increase grid effectiveness and dependable operation. We acquire and preprocess different datasets, considering elements such as time of usage, characteristics of the environment, and user behaviors. Multiple machine learning models, combining neural networks, support vector machines, and forests that are random, are developed and rated for their projected accuracy. Our results imply that enhanced prediction algorithms may considerably raise all the level of detail of EV load forecasts. Furthermore, we recommend load management systems based on real-time forecasts to enhance energy distribution and lower peak demand. This study presents a potential of machine learning that would promote the integration of EVs into smart grids, that tie in to more capable and efficient energy systems.

Abstract:The main and pivot part of electric companies is the load forecasting. Decision-makers and think tank of power sectors should forecast the future need of electricity with large accuracy and small error to give uninterrupted and free of load shedding power to consumers. The demand of electricity can be forecasted amicably by many Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques among which hybrid methods are most popular. The present technologies of load forecasting and present work regarding combination of various ML, DL and AI algorithms are reviewed in this paper. The comprehensive review of single and hybrid forecasting models with functions; advantages and disadvantages are discussed in this paper. The comparison between the performance of the models in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values are compared and discussed with literature of different models to support the researchers to select the best model for load prediction. This comparison validates the fact that the hybrid forecasting models will provide a more optimal solution.

Abstract:Forecasting of load is essential for operating power systems. India recently witnessed one of the worst power crisis with the highest ever power demand of 207 GW on April 29, 2022. The demand in the month of May and June 2022 was estimated to reach 215 GW. The peak demand this year 2023, according to the electricity ministry, is predicted to be around 230 GW from April to June. The inability to meet certain fundamental issues as power can take a toll on any country's economy. Proper prediction helps in proper decision making and planning. The main objective of this paper is to predict day ahead electrical load demand for Assam. Statistical and Machine Learning Algorithms has been studied. The study has been carried out using real-time data for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. The paper presents a detailed analysis of the different hyper parameters of the deep learning models and their effect is seen on the learning efficiency. A novel stacked forecasting model is proposed using neural networks as base learners and CatBoost as the meta-learner. The performance of the proposed model has been evaluated and compared with individual models in terms of training time and accuracy using different error metrics namely MAE, MSE, RMSE, MAPE and R 2 score. A comparison of the proposed prediction model with the prediction models available in literature has been presented. The conclusion states that both the statistical and machine learning algorithms used in this study act as useful tools for daily load forecasting with considerable accuracy; yet machine learning algorithm outperforms the statistical methods. The entire work has been done in Google Colaboratory using Python as the programming language.

Abstract:<span>The evolution of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) has increased the electricity consumption data in real-time manifolds. Using this massive data, the load forecasting methods have undergone numerous transformations. In this paper, short-term and mid-term load forecasting (STLF and MTLF) is proposed using smart-metered data acquired from a real-life distribution grid at the NIT Patna campus with different classical and machine learning methods. Data pre-processing is done to transform the raw data into an appropriate format by removing the outliers present in the datasets. The influential meteorological variables obtained by correlation analysis along with the past load are used to train the load forecasting model. The proposed support vector regression (SVR) produces the best forecasting performance for the test system with a minimum mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean square error (RMSE). The proposed method outperforms the existing approaches for STLF and MTLF by an average MAPE of 3.60.</span>

Abstract:The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources tends to redirect the power systems community's interest from the traditional power grid model towards the smart grid framework. During this transition, load forecasting for various time horizons constitutes an essential electric utility task in network planning, operation, and management. This paper presents a novel mixed power-load forecasting scheme for multiple prediction horizons ranging from 15 min to 24 h ahead. The proposed approach makes use of a pool of models trained by several machine-learning methods with different characteristics, namely neural networks, linear regression, support vector regression, random forests, and sparse regression. The final prediction values are calculated using an online decision mechanism based on weighting the individual models according to their past performance. The proposed scheme is evaluated on real electrical load data sensed from a high voltage/medium voltage substation and is shown to be highly effective, as it results in R2 coefficient values ranging from 0.99 to 0.79 for prediction horizons ranging from 15 min to 24 h ahead, respectively. The method is compared to several state-of-the-art machine-learning approaches, as well as a different ensemble method, producing highly competitive results in terms of prediction accuracy.

Abstract:<p>With the ongoing integration of renewable energies into the electrical power grid, industrial energy flexibility gains importance. To enable demand response applications, knowledge about the future energy demand is necessary. This paper presents a machine learning process to forecast the very short term load of two machine tools, which can be utilized as a decision support basis for control schemes and measures to increase energy flexibility and decrease energy cost in manufacturing. The presented process is developed and evaluated on production machines in a research factory. The results indicate that the developed machine learning process is feasible and creates an accurate very short term load forecasting model for different production machines. It can be used as a blueprint to develop load forecasting models for other production machines using the historic load profile and various machine and process data. A combination of time series features and an Artificial Neural Network proves to be the most robust model regarding the presented machine tools with achieved coefficients of determination between 0.57 and 0.64 for a 100 step forecast. Improvements are still needed regarding the forecasting accuracy, especially of load peaks, for which different measures are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Short-term electric power load forecasting is a critical and essential task for utilities of the electric power industry for proper energy trading and that enable the independent system operator to operate the network without any technical and economical issues. In this paper, machine learning model such as linear regression model is used to forecast the active power load one hour and one day ahead. Real time active power load data to train and test the machine learning model is collected from a 33/11 kV substation located in Telangana State, India. Based on the simulation results, it is observed that linear regression model can forecast the load with less mean absolute error i.e. 0.042 with training data and 0.045 with testing data in comparison with support vector regressor model for an hour ahead operation. Whereas in the case of the day ahead operation, linear regression model can forecast the load with less mean absolute error i.e. 0.055 with training data and 0.057 with testing data in comparison with support vector regressor model. A platform independent web application is developed to help the operators of the 33/11 kV substation which is located in Godishala, Telangana State, India.

Abstract:Accurate electrical load forecasting is crucial for optimizing power system operations, planning, and management. As power systems become increasingly complex, traditional forecasting methods may fail to capture the intricate patterns and dependencies within load data. Machine learning (ML) techniques have emerged as powerful alternatives, offering superior prediction accuracy and the ability to model non-linear and complex temporal relationships. This study presents a comprehensive comparison of prominent ML models: feedforward neural networks, recurrent neural networks, long short-term memory networks, gated recurrent units, and the attention temporal graph convolutional network; for short-term load forecasting of the Energy Corridor distribution system in Houston, Texas. Using a 24-hour look-back window, we train the models on datasets spanning one and five years, to predict the load demand for the next hour and assess performance. Our findings aim to identify the most effective ML approach for accurate load forecasting, contributing to improved grid reliability and system optimization.

Abstract:The prediction of the load from a day ahead or a week ahead is called short-term load forecasting. STLF using ANN gives better results in the power grid because the construction of the model is precise, implementation is easy and the performances are good. The weight consisted neural model is a good whose optimal value was found by using various optimization techniques. This paper explains the effect of different machine learning techniques like genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, autoregressive integrated moving average, empirical mode decomposition-particle swarm optimization-adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system in STLF and fuzzy logy for the optimization of renewable energy sources, i.e. solar and wind which is also used for the training of the artificial neural network with the silent effect of backpropagation. The study of different machine learning techniques presented their ability to work to produce the results and their extended application in STLF. From the simulation results, we got an empirical mode decomposition-particle swarm optimization-adaptive network-based fuzzy interference system that provides minor error, which is very much permissible compared to other techniques.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity due to their fuel efficiency and ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Significant penetration of EVs with unregulated charging, which can have a substantial impact on power networks. Accurate load predictions, including the charging of EVs are crucial for ensuring the cost‐effective and dependable operation of power systems. In order to estimate short‐term load in the presence of EV load, the XG (extreme gradient) boost algorithm is proposed and the effectiveness of the performances are checked against other models. A variety of distinct meteorological parameters and the electrical load pattern for the years 2017 and 2018 for Northeast India are used to train the machine learning classifier models. R‐squared value analyses are also performed to identify the most correlated input parameters that influence the results of various models. Analysis shows that temperature, cloud cover, heat index, dew point, wind chill, and perceived temperature are substantially connected with electricity consumption. The performance of XG boost is outperformed by comparing prediction results with decision tree, random forest, K nearest neighbors, and logistic regression. Three separate case studies were employed for verification using the precision, F1 score, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy metrics. Our findings demonstrate that, in comparison to other forecasting models, XG Boost exhibits higher accuracy (83.84%, 81.51%, and 85.97%) and robust forecasts.

Abstract:This paper proposes a predictive techno-economic analysis in terms of voltage stability and cost using regression-based machine learning (ML) models and effectiveness of the analysis is validated. Predictive analysis of a power system is proposed to address the need for faster and accurate analyses that would aid in the operation and control of modern power system. Several methods of analyses including metaheuristic optimization algorithms, artificial intelligence techniques and machine learning algorithms are being developed and used. Predictive ML models for two modified IEEE 14-bus and IEEE-30 bus systems, integrated with renewable energy sources (solar and wind) and reactive power compensative device (STATCOM) are proposed and developed with features that include hour of the day, solar irradiation, wind velocity, dynamic grid price and system load. An hour-wise input database for the model development is generated from monthly average data and hour-wise daily curves with normally distributed standard deviations. The data feasibility tests and output database generation is performed using MATLAB. Linear and higher order polynomial regression models are developed for the 8760hr database using Python 3.0 in JupyterLab and a best-fit predictive ML model is identified by analysing the coefficients of determination. The voltage stability and cost predictive ML models were tested for a 24hr input profile. The results obtained and the comparison with the expected values are furnished. Prediction of the outputs for the test data validate the accuracy of the developed model.

Abstract:The energy sector heavily relies on a diverse array of machine learning algorithms for power load prediction, which plays a pivotal role in shaping policies for power generation and distribution. The precision of power load prediction depends on numerous factors that reflect nonlinear traits within the data. Notably, machine learning algorithms and artificial neural networks have emerged as indispensable components in contemporary power load forecasting. This study focuses specifically on machine learning algorithms, encompassing support vector machines (SVMs), long short-term memory (LSTM), ensemble classifiers, recurrent neural networks, and deep learning methods. The research meticulously examines short-term power load prediction by leveraging Chandigarh UT electricity utility data spanning the last 5 years. The assessment of prediction accuracy utilizes metrics such as normalized mean square error (NMSE), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and mutual information (MI). The prediction results demonstrate superior performance in LSTM compared to other algorithms, with the prediction error being the lowest in LSTM and 13.51% higher in SVMs. These findings provide valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of different machine learning algorithms. Validation experiments for the proposed method are conducted using MATLAB R2018 software.

Abstract:With the rapid increase in the world’s population, the global electricity demand has increased drastically. Therefore, it is required to adopt efficient energy management mechanisms. Since the energy consumption trends are rather dynamic. Therefore, precise energy demand estimation and short and/or long-term forecasting results with higher accuracy are required to develop the optimization and control mechanism. Consequently, the machine learning (ML) techniques along with distributed demand response programs are being adopted to predict the future energy demand requirement with satisfactory results. In this paper, different state-of-the-art ML algorithms such as logistic regression (LR), support vector machines (SVM), naive Bayes (NB), decision tree classifier (DTC), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and neural networks (NNs), have been implemented to analyze their performance. The main objective of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of ML algorithms for short-term load forecasting (STLF) regarding accuracy and forecast error. Based on the implementation and analysis, we have identified that, among other algorithms, the DTC provides comparatively better results. Therefore, we devised the enhanced DTC (EDTC) by integrating fitting function, loss function, and gradient boosting in DTC mathematical model for fine-tuning the control variables. The implementation results show that the proposed EDTC algorithm provides better forecast results (i.e., 99.9 % recall, 100% F1, 100% precision, 99.21 % training accuracy, and 99.70% testing accuracy.)
