Abstract:In recent years, the discussion of corporate social responsibilities triggered by social donation, environment pollution, haze, and food security etc.,are concerned in emerging market, but remained questions rank above verdict. Existing literatures suggest that the effects of social responsibility fulfillment fall short of expectation under reversed transmission of the pressure simply response to regulation. Environment protection and carbon reduction is the important component of corporate social responsibilities. In post-Copenhagen era,low carbonis the current catchword or global hot words. Occurrence of greenhouse effect triggered by carbon dioxide emission raise the attention of investor, consumer, government, media, etc. Meanwhile, majority governments in the world take active actions of binding commitment to carbon reduction and carbon regulation setting within framework of UNFCCC. However, carbon reduction doesn't reach aim in one move but need take time and efforts including both government reinforcing the policies for carbon regulation and corporate initiative response. In current uncertainty environment imposed by natural resource endowment constraints and increasing carbon regulations, enterprises are confronted with more and more carbon uncertainty in post-Copenhagen era. Carbon response to underlying risks and opportunities is becoming important strategic step for firms to promote social responsibility implementation and to improve competitive advantages. This paper is motivated by a growing body of research that examines the environment / carbon information disclosure and its impact on performance in largely carbon intensive firms. Carbon accounting literatures theoretically and empirically study the carbon disclosure in the perspective of legitimacy theory, economic theory and risk theory, and find that firm size is an important factor influencing carbon information disclosure, but do not identify the information usefulness of carbon risks or opportunities in non-financial report. Furthermore, current researches on the relation between environmental information and environmental performance are far away from reaching a clear conclusion. Especially, environmental performance measures are limited. Thus, the contribution of this paper enriches the traditional research area of social responsibility accounting and risk-oriented strategies literatures. Using a sample of SP 500 carbon intensive firms disclosed by CDP( Carbon Disclosure Project),this paper examines the firm's identity of carbon risks / opportunities, and among which the discrepancy of carbon response for various firm size. The result shows that firm's carbon awareness is raised apparently. Carbon risks and carbon opportunities confronted with firms are significantly related to carbon management response. Especially, firm size is one of the key driving factors which have impact on the carbon activities. That is,large firms focus more on carbon risks aversion to mitigate social and political pressures, while small firms care more about carbon opportunities taking to improve competitive advantages in carbon uncertainty environment. In addition, governance mechanisms as board committee responsible for carbon, individual carbon incentives, and carbon reduction target setting, play significantly positive role in improving carbon management response. The conclusions reached in this paper provide practical significance and policy suggestions for low carbon economy development in China, firm's climate change response, social responsibility promotion, carbon regulation, and improvement of Chinese figures in international climate negotiation, etc.
