Abstract:In the semiconductor/molecule/metal system, enhancing the efficiency of the charge-transfer (CT) plays a pivotal role in improving the sensitivity of semiconductor-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this work, use of SERS for detection of an enhanced CT in a chemically-etched Al-doped ZnO (AZO), 4-mercaptopyridine (MPy) molecule, and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) (AZO/MPy/Ag) sandwich structure is reported. A series of CT routes are proposed in the energy level diagram of AZO/MPy/Ag assemblies under the excitation line at 633 nm. Very interestingly, for the first of its kind, a significant CT route from the conduction band (CB) of AZO to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of MPy molecule is detected. This route can remarkably improve the degree of CT in the AZO/MPy/Ag system by about 48% compared with that of the ZnO/MPy/Ag system. Furthermore, the uniquely enhanced CT route is also further confirmed by alternative probe molecules like p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA). The discovery of this extra CT route will inevitably play an irreplaceable role in SERS enhancement through its participating in the CT enhancement mechanism.

Charge-Transfer Process in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Based on Energy Level Locations of Rare-Earth Nd3+-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for semiconductor nanomaterial systems is limited due to weak Raman signal intensity and unclear charge-transfer (CT) processes for chemical enhancement. Here, rare-earth element neodymium-doped titanium dioxide (Nd-TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by the sol–gel method. The characterizations show that the doping of Nd ions causes TiO2 NPs to show an increase in the concentration of defects and change in the energy level structure. The CT process between Nd-TiO2 NPs substrate and probe molecule 4-Mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) was innovatively analyzed using the relative energy level location relationship of the Dorenbos model. The SERS signal intensity exhibits an exponential enhancement with increasing Nd doping concentration and reaches its optimum at 2%, which is attributed to two factors: (1) The increase in the defect concentration is beneficial to the CT process between the TiO2 and the probe molecule; (2) the introduction of 4f electron orbital energy levels of rare-earth ions created unique CT process between Nd3+ and 4-Mpy. Moreover, the Nd-TiO2 NPs substrate shows excellent SERS performance in Raman signal reproducibility (RSD = 5.31%), the limit of detection (LOD = 10−6 M), and enhancement factor (EF = 3.79 × 104). Our work not only improves the SERS performance of semiconductor substrates but also provides a novel approach to the development of selective detection of probe molecules.

Abstract:As a significant accompanying phenomenon of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the addition of foreign molecules to colloidal gold or silver nanoparticles results in a new abnormal optical absorption (AOA) band, which usually appears in the long-wavelength region. The assignment of this AOA band has long been debated as an important issue that is desired to be addressed in the SERS field, which is crucial for a clear understanding of the SERS enhancement mechanism and beneficial to surface plasmonics. In this study, both the calculated and measured optical absorptions of gold nanoparticle monomers and dimers as well as their interactions with adsorbed molecules, showed that the AOA band in the long-wavelength region which was assigned to the characteristic longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of gold nanoparticle chain aggregates in conventional SERS electromagnetic theory, should be attributed to the charge-transfer resonance absorption from gold nanoparticles to adsorbed molecules. This was further confirmed by the corresponding SERS effects. As the excitation wavelength at 785 nm was resonant with the broad AOA band centered at 750 nm, the SERS peaks of the adsorbed pyridine molecules could be dramatically enhanced due to the charge-transfer resonance effect. In contrast, under an excitation wavelength of 532 nm, the SERS peaks appeared very weak, although the excitation wavelength was resonant with the LSPR absorption band of the individual gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a fingerprint spectral technique whose performance is highly dependent on the physicochemical properties of the substrate materials. In addition to the traditional plasmonic metal substrates that feature prominent electromagnetic enhancements, boosted SERS activities have been reported recently for various categories of non-metal materials, including graphene, MXenes, transition-metal chalcogens/oxides, and conjugated organic molecules. Although the structural compositions of these semiconducting substrates vary, chemical enhancements induced by interfacial charge transfer are often the major contributors to the overall SERS behavior, which is distinct from that of the traditional SERS based on plasmonic metals. Regarding charge-transfer-induced SERS enhancements, this short review introduces the basic concepts underlying the SERS enhancements, the most recent semiconducting substrates that use novel manipulation strategies, and the extended applications of these versatile substrates.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful tool in charge transfer (CT) process research. By analyzing the relative intensity of the characteristic bands in the bridging molecules, one can obtain detailed information about the CT between two materials. Herein, we synthesized a series of Au nanorods (NRs) with different length-to-diameter ratios (L/Ds) and used these Au NRs to prepare a series of core–shell structures with the same Cu2O thicknesses to form Au NR–4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA)@Cu2O core–shell structures. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption bands were adjusted by tuning the L/Ds of Au NR cores in these assemblies. SERS spectra of the core-shell structure were obtained under 633 and 785 nm laser excitations, and on the basis of the differences in the relative band strengths of these SERS spectra detected with the as-synthesized assemblies, we calculated the CT degree of the core–shell structure. We explored whether the Cu2O conduction band and valence band position and the SPR absorption band position together affect the CT process in the core–shell structure. In this work, we found that the specific surface area of the Au NRs could influence the CT process in Au NR–MBA@Cu2O core–shell structures, which has rarely been discussed before.

Abstract:In recent years, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of a molecule/metal–semiconductor hybrid system has attracted considerable interest and regarded as the synergetic contribution of the electromagnetic and chemical enhancements from the incorporation of noble metal into semiconductor nanomaterials. However, the underlying mechanism is still to be revealed in detail. Herein, we report an irreversible accumulated SERS behavior induced by near-infrared (NIR) light irradiating on a 4-mercaptobenzoic acid linked with silver and silver-doped titanium dioxide (4MBA/Ag/Ag-doped TiO 2 ) hybrid system. With increasing irradiation time, the SERS intensity of 4MBA shows an irreversible exponential increase, and the Raman signal of the Ag/Ag-doped TiO 2 substrate displays an exponential decrease. A microscopic understanding of the time-dependent SERS behavior is derived based on the microanalysis of the Ag/Ag-doped TiO 2 nanostructure and the molecular dynamics, which is attributed to three factors: (1) higher crystallinity of Ag/Ag-doped TiO 2 substrate; (2) photo-induced charge transfer; (3) charge-induced molecular reorientation.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has outstanding merits in biochemical molecular analysis, and the development of new SERS substrates is the focus of research. Herein, In 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a high temperature pyrolysis method with cubic phase and small particle size at 10 nm. The structures and properties of In 2 O 3 NPs were characterized by X–ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and other characterization methods. Additionally, the SERS spectra of In 2 O 3 -MBA with the enhancement factor ( EF ) up to 1.22 × 10 4 is discussed. The results demonstrate that there is a charge transfer (CT) effect revealed between the adsorbed molecules of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and the substrates of In 2 O 3 NPs, and it could be excited by long wavelength energy. Based on the In 2 O 3 NPs, the study is beneficial to develop more potential semiconductor SERS substrates.

Abstract:Since the discovery of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERS), elucidating the charge-transfer (CT) mechanism has been a challenging and controversial process. Different theoretical models have been proposed to explain the effect of applied electrode potential on SERS-CT, but achieving a high-quality conserved trend of experimental observations and explaining the nature of the selective enhancement of the signals is not a trivial task and the results and conclusions are still in dispute. We investigated recently the performance of time-dependent excited-state gradient approximation under the effects of a uniform finite electric field in a simulation of the experimental spectra of pyridine on an Ag electrode. The singular patterns of the experimental spectra for symmetric and non-symmetric benzene-like derivative compounds and the consistent trends of enhancements of their signals under various electrode potentials motivated us to extend our simulation studies to 4-methylpyridine, pyrazine and pyrimidine molecules on silver metal clusters. For these molecules, selective enhancement and de-enhancement of totally symmetric (υ6a, υ9a and υ8a) and non-totally symmetric (υ6b and υ8b) modes upon changing the field were obtained and matched well with experimental observations. The selective enhancement of each signal in a zero field was explained by means of excited-state vector gradients and excited-state charge density difference for the S0→ SCT transition. On-field calculations showed slight perturbations of the geometries and electronic structures of the molecules. These on-field calculations also directly affected the magnitude of specific excited-state vector gradients and dimensionless displacements, and moreover the patterns of the spectra. The results of this investigation provided insight into the nature of the selective enhancements of signals and may help researchers propose the selection rules of SERS-CT.
Exploring the charge transfer enhancement mechanism in selective SERS detection with Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of poor sensitivity and selectivity of conventional SERS substrates, we synthesized Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets in this paper by a two-step hydrothermal method. The structure and morphology of the synthesized Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets were characterized by XRD and SEM,respectively. The results show that the Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheet has an irregular layered structure. Further, the SERS properties of Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets were tested by using rhodamine 6G (R6G), crystalline violet (CV), and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as probe molecules, respectively. The test results demonstrated that the nanosheets were specific to R6G and CV probe molecules, and the mechanism of selectivity was due to CT enhancement. In addition, Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity in R6G and CV, with the corresponding detection limit of both reached 10-8 M. And linear fitting of the peak intensities was carried out, with the R2 coefficient of 0.981 and 0.951, respectively. Finally, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of this Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets was obtained to be 8.56 % by test 1 × 10-4 M R6G at the characteristic peak 613 cm-1, which represents excellent detection repeatability. The Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets are rich in edge-active sites favorable for charge transfer, which can enhance the SERS signals of the target molecules better. Besides, the Raman detection of the surface of Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets using nitrofurantoin (NFT) also reached a detection limit of 10-8 M. Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets substrates can find applications in medicine and provide new strategies for improving the SERS performance.

Abstract:Semiconductor nanomaterials with the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensitivity are gradually attracting more and more attention due to their particular advantages. However, the wider applications of semiconductor SERS-active substrates still require considerable effort to improve their SERS sensitivity. An excellent enhancement of Raman scattering is achieved by Ta2O5 superstructures with a mean diameter of 29 nm. The Ta2O5 superstructure is constructed by crystallized Ta2O5 quantum dots with an average diameter of 2.39 nm and exhibits a very low detection limit of 10−7 M for both methyl violet and methylene blue molecules under the irradiation of 532 nm laser. The chemical enhancement, originating from the precise matching of energy levels and the facile charge transfer between Ta2O5 superstructures and dye molecules, predominantly contributes to the Raman enhancement. The detailed band structure analysis in this work does a good demonstration for achieving the energy level matching and charge transfer enhancement in semiconductor SERS-active substrates with the probed molecules.

Abstract:The surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)of P-Thioeresol adsorbed on colloidal silver at the incident light of 514.5 nm is reported experimentally and theoretically.The enhancement mechanisms of them are analyzed.The enhancement is mostly contributed from the electromagnetic enhancement.If the coupling effect of two Ag nanoparticles(diameter of 100 nm)with a distance of 2 nm is considered,in the center between two particles,electromagnetic enhancement of SERS is 7.16×107.The static chemical enhancement also plays a role and the enhancement is 6.So,the total enhancement of SERS,including the static chemical enhancement and the electromagnetic enhancement,is Gtotal=Gsc × GEm=4.4 × 108.The surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering(SERRS)of the system is also studied theoretically.When the incident light resonates with the excited state of P-Thioeresol-ag3 complex,the charge transfer mechanism(chemical enhancement)also plays an important role and the strongest charge transfer enhancement can reach up to 106.We visualize the orientation and result of charge transfer between P-Thiocresol and ig cluster on the excitation with charge difference density,which is the directly theoretical evidence for charge transfer.The enhancement of SERRS,including the charge transfer and electromagnetic mechanisms,can reach up to 1013.
Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Spectra of Adsorbates on Cu2o Nanospheres: Charge-Transfer and Electromagnetic Enhancement

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) have been investigated on the surface of Cu2O nanospheres. The SERS signals were believed to originate from the static chemical enhancement, resonant chemical enhancement and electromagnetic enhancement. The coupling between the adsorbates and the semiconductor, evidenced by the shift in absorption spectrum of modified Cu2O and the enhancement of non-totally symmetric modes of the 4-MBA and 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) molecules, were invoked to explain the experimental results. Furthermore, simulations were employed to investigate the nature of the enhancement mechanisms operative between the molecules and the semiconductor. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested a charge transfer (CT) transition process between the molecules and the Cu2O nanospheres. Three-dimensional finite-difference time domain (3D-FDTD) simulations were conducted to map out the electromagnetic field around the Cu2O nanospheres. The experimental and simulation results have revealed the promise of the Cu2O nanospheres as a good SERS substrate and the prospect of using the SERS substrate as a valuable tool for in situ investigation and assay of the adsorption behavior on semiconductor surfaces.
Interfacial Bonding Induced Charge Transfer in Two‐dimensional Amorphous MoO3‐x/Graphdiyne Oxide Non‐van der Waals Heterostructures for Dominant SERS Enhancement

Abstract:Two‐dimensional semiconductor‐based nanomaterials have shown to be an effective substrate for Surface‐enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. However, the enhancement factor (EF) tends to be relatively weak compared to that of noble metals and does not allow for trace detection of molecules. In this work, we report the successful preparation of two‐dimensional (2D) amorphous non‐van der Waals heterostructures MoO3‐x/GDYO nanomaterials using supercritical CO2. Due to the synergistic effect of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and the charge transfer effect, it exhibits excellent SERS performance in the detection of methylene blue (MB) molecules, with a detection limit as low as 10‐14 M while the enhancement factor (EF) can reach an impressive 2.55 × 1011. More importantly, the chemical bond bridging at the MoO3‐x/GDYO heterostructures interface can accelerate the electron transfer between the interfaces, and the large number of defective surface structures on the heterostructures surface facilitates the chemisorption of MB molecules. And the charge recombination lifetime can be proved by a ~1.7‐fold increase during their interfacial electron‐transfer process for MoO3‐x/GDYO@MB mixture, achieving highly sensitive SERS detection.

Surface Plasmon Resonance-Induced Charge Transfer in Ag/Mercaptobenzoic Acid/Polyaniline Sandwich Structures

Abstract:Tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of silver (Ag) films fabricated via magnetron sputtering technology was achieved. The experimental findings demonstrated that the thickness of the Ag film gradually increased with increasing sputtering time, resulting in a red shift of the SPR peak. To investigate the charge transfer (CT) induced by SPR in a metal/probe molecule/organic semiconductor system, a composite system composed of Ag nanoparticles, mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA), and polyaniline (PANI) was prepared by a layered assembly method. Notably, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensity of the Ag/MBA/PANI system increased significantly with the introduction of PANI. The contribution of CT was evaluated by using the CT degree of the Ag/MBA/PANI system. On the basis of these results, the CT direction was confirmed by 2D correlation spectroscopy, revealing that the Ag/MBA/PANI system had good stability and excellent SERS performance. This development opens up novel possibilities and perspectives for the fabrication of SERS-active substrates.

Study of Chemical Enhancement in SERS from Au Nanoparticles Assembly

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles were assembled on gold substrates with the self-assembled monolayer(SAM) of p-minothiophenol(PATP). AFM measurements disclose that gold nanoparticles are scattered over the surface of the substrate with a submonolayer coverage. The Raman signal of the coupling: layer, the SAM of PATP, can be well observed. Potential-dependent measurements were performed to study the chemical enhancement in SERS of such a system. Based on the supposition that the direction of charge transfer is from gold nanoparticles to PATP, it is deduced that Herzberg-Teller contribution has ruled in the SERS of such a system.

Abstract:The conduction band (CB) edge and surface state energy level of TiO2 nanoparticles shift downward with increasing Li+ concentration, which facilitates the charge‐transfer interaction between the molecules and the surface enhanced Raman scattering substrates. While the Lithium ion modification strategy is widely adopted in tuning the bandgap of semiconductors in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), such strategy is yet to be applied to semiconductor‐based surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which is also a photo‐induced charge‐transfer (CT) process. Here, a new DSSCs‐inspired modification method is proposed for TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs): through the adsorption of Li+, the surface states of TiO2 NPs are more abundant, so that the SERS intensity and charge transfer of the adsorbed molecule are significantly enhanced. Similar to DSSCs systems, it is found that the conduction band edge and surface state energy level of TiO2 NPs shift downward with increasing Li+ concentration, which facilitates the CT interaction between the molecules and the SERS substrates. The EF can reach to 104, 1–2 degrees higher than previously reported pure semiconductors. This is the first time to use the DSSCs‐inspired Li+ adsorption strategy on TiO2 NPs as SERS substrate to investigate its SERS enhancement effect, which may provide new ideas for the development of semiconductor nanomaterials in the research of SERS substrates.

The synergistic effect of nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide/mercaptobenzoic acid/silver nanocomplexes for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Abstract:We synthesized titanium dioxide (TiO2) and nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (N-TiO2 NPs) via a sol-hydrothermal method using ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) as the nitrogen (N) source. Furthermore, an N-TiO2/4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA)/silver (Ag) nanocomplex served as an active substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and was prepared by self-assembly. During SERS, the Raman signals of 4-MBA of the N-TiO2/MBA/Ag nanocomplexes exhibited higher intensity and sensitivity than pure TiO2/MBA/Ag, with 1% N doping in N-TiO2, producing the strongest Raman signals. We characterized the N-TiO2 hybrid materials by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra. N doping did not influence the phase of the TiO2 crystal. The doped N entered into the crystal lattice of the TiO2, replacing some oxygen (O) to form Ti-O-N or Ti-N-O linkage. The results indicated that an appropriate amount of N doping could enhance the SERS performance of the TiO2 SERS substrate via N substitution doping. These doping forms were beneficial to the molecular charge transfer (CT), and this resulted in improved SERS performance for N-doped TiO2 NPs. We attributed this improvement to the formation of N-doping energy levels that were beneficial to the process of TiO2 to MBA molecule CT. This work not only enriched the nonmetal-doped CT mechanism in SERS but also provided several reference values for practical applications.Graphical abstractN-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized. Whereafter, N-TiO2/MBA/Ag nanocomplexes were prepared and served as a SERS-active substrate. An appropriate amount of N doping can enhance the SERS properties of TiO2 SERS-active substrate by nitrogen substitution doping. The nonmetal doping TiO2-to-molecule CT mechanism and the synergistic effect in N-TiO2/MBA/Ag charge transfer systems have been studied.

Abstract:Charge-transfer enhancement of Raman scattering plays a crucial role in current-carrying molecular junctions. However, the microscopic mechanism of light scattering in such nonequilibrium systems is still imperfectly understood. Here, using low-temperature tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), we investigate how Raman scattering evolves as a function of the gap distance in the single C<sub>60</sub>-molecule junction consisting of an Ag tip and various metal surfaces. Precise gap-distance control allows the examination of two distinct transport regimes, namely tunneling regime and molecular point contact (MPC). Simultaneous measurement of TERS and the electric current in scanning tunneling microscopy shows that the MPC formation results in dramatic Raman enhancement that enables one to observe the vibrations undetectable in the tunneling regime. This enhancement is found to commonly occur not only for coinage but also transition metal substrates. We suggest that the characteristic enhancement upon the MPC formation is rationalized by charge-transfer excitation.

Abstract:This graphical abstract describes the role of conformational change in regulating the luminescence nature of twisted organic donor leading to the formation of rapid charge transfer complexation with an acceptor molecule that is further utilized as an efficient SERS substrate for methylene blue detection. Organic charge‐transfer (CT) co‐crystals have demonstrated remarkable physical properties and have found applications in numerous fields. Yet their utility as a Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) substrate, a powerful and versatile analytical tool, has never been explored. Herein, three twisted molecular donors are synthesized, that exhibit well‐controlled switchable optical properties including aggregation‐induced emission (AIE), mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), and color‐specific polymorphism. Rapid production of charge‐transfer co‐crystals is also established with a π‐acceptor TCNQ and utilized conceptually as a SERS substrate for methylene blue (MB) detection, exhibiting a very high enhancement factor of 109 and limit of detection of 10−13 m, respectively, due to the presence of low‐lying excited state, exhibit an 80% CT character, originating from the HOMO of the co‐crystal and interacting with the LUMO of the MB molecule. This approach using CT co‐crystals as a SERS substrate presents newer frontiers that require minuscule levels of rapid detection and impact allied areas, helping us understand and optimize the fascinating properties of such multicomponent materials for newer technologies.
