Abstract:The effects of applied magnetic field on the system composed of polymer brushes and magnetic particles are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation. The direction of the applied magnetic field is chosen to be perpendicular to the substrate plane. Polymer brushes and magnetic particles are attracted to each other. The average heights of polymer brushes depend not only on the strength of applied magnetic field (H) but also on the brush grafting density (e) and the chain length (N). The applied magnetic field influences the arrangement of magnetic particles, and in turn, the arrangement of magnetic particles affects the spatial distribution of polymer brush monomers. When the strength of the magnetic field is increased, the average height of polymer brushes will be increased accordingly. The reason is that the orientations of the magnetic moments of particles must be along the mag-netic field direction, and this leads polymer brushes to rearrange along the magnetic field direction. At the same time, the chain length and the grafting density of polymer brushes have also effects on the properties of the magnetic particles, such as the magnetic particles distribution, magnetic susceptibility, and pair correlation functions. Comparisons with the experimental ones are also made, and this investigation can provide some insights into statistical properties of magnetic particle-loaded brushes induced by external magnetic field. Abstract:It is well established that weak applied magnetic fields of several tens of millitesla can lead to a change of several percent in the continuous-wave photocurrent in organic semiconductor devices. However, it remains to be determined whether the applied magnetic field modifies the photocarrier generation efficiency or its mobility or both. Abstract:This work describes the development of magnetic levitation (MagLev) to characterize the kinetics of free-radical polymerization of water insoluble, low-molecular-weight monomers that show a large change in density upon polymerization. Maglev measures density, and certain classes of monomers show a large change in density when monomers covalently join in polymer chains. MagLev characterized both the thermal polymerization of methacrylate-based monomers and the photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and made it possible to determine the orders of reaction and the Arrhenius activation energy of polymerization. MagLev also made it possible to monitor polymerization in the presence of solids (aramid fibers, and carbon fibers, and glass fibers). MagLev offers a new analytical technique to materials and polymer scientists that complements other methods (even those based on density, such as dilatometry), and will be useful in investigating polymerizations, evaluating inhibition of polymerizations, and studying polymerization in the presence of included solid materials (e.g., for composite materials).

Abstract:This paper reviews our recent work on the use of magnetic fields to the polymer processing. Polymers considered in this paper are not peculiar ones synthesized specially for the purpose of magnetic processing, but they are very usual ones including poly(ethylene terephthalate), polypropylene, etc. In this paper, two main magnetic effects on polymers are considered, i.e., alignment and levitation. In the first part, the magnetic torque causing the alignment is described. Then, examples of alignment in polymeric systems are presented, starting from simple cases such as magnetic alignment of fibers in a suspension to more complicated cases such as magnetic alignment of crystalline polymers in which mesophase formations and memory effects are involved. In the second part, the magnetic force acting on diamagnetic materials and its application to separation and processing of polymeric materials is described.

Abstract:Block copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate by photochemical initiation was carried out successfully in the water phase with a magnetic field. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with a naphthyl group at one end and a benzoyl benzyl group at the other end[GRAPHICS]was used as triplet sensitizer. The block copolymerization is dependent on the magnetic field and the concentration of PEG sensitizer. It was found that a magnetic field of 0.035 T is sufficient to influence block copolymerization proceeding in the micelles formed by the hydrophilic PEG chain and hydrophobic sensitizer end groups. The molecular weights of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) are in the range of 10(5)-10(6) and the molecular weight distribution is about 1.61-1.74.

Abstract:Using polarization and scanning electron microscopy and water vapor sorption the structure and properties of film composite nanomaterials based on hydroxyethyl cellulose and carbon nanotubes obtained in the magnetic field and outside the field have been studied. The films are anisotropic, which is associated with the formation of a liquid-crystalline phase during solvent evaporation from solution. Application of the magnetic field leads to the orientation of macromolecules and carbon nanotubess in the films, facilitating compaction of the structure of films and reduction in their ability to sorb water vapor. The Gibbs energies of the interaction of hydroxyethyl cellulose/carbon nanotube films obtained in the magnetic field and outside the field with water are calculated. For the films obtained in the magnetic field the negative values of the Gibbs energies decrease, indicating worsening of their interaction with water. With the introduction of carbon nanotubes into hydroxyethyl cellulose this effect becomes more pronounced.

Abstract:Magnetic ( B ) fields are an intriguing route for manipulating soft materials. While most research on B field manipulation of diamagnetic polymers has focused on alignment of ordered structures or anisotropic domains, our recent work uncovered a previously unrecognized effect: B fields alter hydration and hydrogen bonding in thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) solutions. Despite the well-known thermoreversible coil-to-globule transition and hydrogel formation upon heating, the impact of magnetic fields on these structural and rheological transitions has been largely unexplored. In this study, we thoroughly examined the temperature-dependent magnetorheology of PNIPAM solutions, varying B field strength, polymer content, and molecular weight. Linear magnetorheology reveals that increasing the B field intensity decreases the dynamic moduli of the resulting physical hydrogel, across polymer concentrations (5–20% wt) and molecular weights (30–108 kDa), by up to an order of magnitude. Conversely, the gelation onset temperature does not change substantially. This weakening effect is more pronounced at longer magnetization times and slower temperature ramp rates. Nonlinear magnetorheology following hydrogel formation reveals a two-step yielding process characteristic of attractive-driven glasses, suggesting that magnetization decreases both the stress and length scales associated with mesoglobule cage breaking. We propose that B fields impact the hydrogel rheology by altering the mesoglobule size and water content. This work uncovers essential understanding of how B fields alter hydrogel formation in PNIPAM solutions, broadening the scope of magnetic field manipulation of diamagnetic polymer solutions.

Abstract:The effect of magnetic field (MF) on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene initiated with benzoyl peroxide in supercritical (SC)CO2 was studied. The polymerization yields and the molecular weight of poly(methyl methacrylate) increased when a MF was employed. However, the MF did not noticeably affect the polymerization in cyclohexane. This unusual phenomenon may result from the special swelling power of SC CO2 for the polymers and the larger diffusivity of SC CO2 than the liquid solvent.

Abstract:<p>We investigate the properties of magnetic supracolliodal polymers – magnetic filaments (MFs) – with super-paramagnetic monomers, with and without Van der Waals (VdW) attraction between them. We employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to elucidate the impact of crosslinking mechanism on the structural and magnetic response of MFs to an applied external homogeneous magnetic field. We consider two models: plain crosslinking, which results in a flexible backbone; and constrained crosslinking, which provides significant stiffens against bending. We find that for plain crosslinking, even a slight increase of the central attraction leads to collapsed MF conformations. Structures that initially exhibit spherical symmetry evolve into cylindrically symmetric ones, with growing magnetic field strength. Plain crosslinking also allows for conformational bistability. MFs with constrained crosslinking tend to, instead, unravel in field. In both crosslinking scenarios, central attraction is able to hinder low-field magnetic response of MFs, albeit the bistability of plainly crosslinked MFs manifests itself also in the high-field region.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, the experimental results on the effects of a magnetic field on water are reported. Purified water was circulated at a constant flow rate in a magnetic field. After this treatment, the physicochemical properties of water were changed, shown as the decrease of surface tension and the increase of viscosity over the treatment time. The water is more stable by magnetic treatment with less molecular energy and more activation energy, as shown from the calculation based on the results. The correlation time τc was calculated in terms of spin–lattice relaxation time of proton NMR, which verified that the rotational motions got slow down after magnetic treatments. A two-phase model was set up to prove that the proportion of free water molecules was reduced. The results suggested that the average size of water clusters became larger by magnetic treatments.

Abstract:The water solubility of acrylonitrile (AN) and its effects on vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile/styrene (VDC/AN/St) suspension copolymerization were investigated in this study. It shows that the VDC/St ratio and the presence of suspending agent have no obvious influences on AN phase partition between the monomer and aqueous phases, whereas the water solubility of AN increases as temperature increases. Polymerization in the aqueous phase occurs extensively with azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as initiator, whereas with lauryl peroxide (LPO) as initiator, polymerization in the aqueous phase is negligible. Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that transport of the monomer molecule is possible during polymerization. Both VDC and AN transfer from the monomer phase to the aqueous phase when AIBN is used as initiator. AN transfers from the aqueous phase to the monomer phase for the polymerization system initiated by LPO. Sodium nitrite (NaNO2), but not sodium sulfide (Na2S), can be used to effectively inhibit polymerization in water and exerts less influence on the polymerization in the monomer phase. Abstract:Side-chain liquid crystal polymers have been mixed with ferromagnetic particles, and the formation of a monodomain in magnetic fields studied. At relatively low concentrations, the presence of ferroparticles substantially speeds up the rate of formation of a monodomain within the magnetic field, and, at a given concentration of ferroparticles, that rate is independent of the magnetic field's strength. In this way, the rapid formation of a monodomain is possible at magnetic field strengths far lower those required for the liquid crystal polymer alone. This is anticipated to be very helpful in the fabrication of devices based on monodomain liquid crystal elastomers. Wide-angle x-ray scattering has been used to monitor the formation of the monodomain and small-angle x-ray scattering gives some indication of the ferroparticles' behaviour. A model is developed to explain their behaviour. The alignment properties of the ferroparticles are related to their ability to form chains under the influence of very low magnetic fields; these chains are of relatively low stability and may become disrupted after long periods of time, high magnetic fields, or high concentrations. In general, the best results for alignment were at volume fractions below 1%, and under these conditions there is the potential for producing monodomain samples with improved properties; in particular, shape changes with temperature are significantly larger as a result of improved backbone orientation. Experiments involving monodomain formation and director realignment suggest that the presence of ferroparticles results in a modification of the mechanism for alignment development, driven by the organization of the polymer backbone, as a consequence of the constraints offered by the morphology of the chains of the ferroparticles.

Abstract:Diverse polymer crosslinking techniques allow the synthesis of linear polymer-like structures whose monomers are colloidal particles. In the case where all or part of these colloidal particles are magnetic, one can control the behaviour of these supracolloidal polymers, known as magnetic filaments (MFs), by applied magnetic fields. However, the response of MFs strongly depends on the crosslinking procedure. In the present study, we employ Langevin dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of the type of crosslinking and the distribution of magnetic particles within MFs on their response to an external magnetic field. We found that if the rotation of the dipole moment of particles is not coupled to the backbone of the filament, the impact of the magnetic content is strongly decreased.

Abstract:We report the effect of oleic acid-capped magnetic nanoparticles (mNPs, γ-Fe2O3) on the morphology and phase separation behavior of diblock copolymer thin film, polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate), PS-b-PMMA, under various experimental conditions such as the casting solvent, mNPs concentration, and the annealing time. If chloroform (CHCl3, slightly selective for PMMA) is selected as the casting solvent, the morphologies of the PS-b-PMMA thin film are affected by the embedded mNPs, while there will be no such effect when toluene (slightly selective for PS) is used. In toluene systems, at lower mNP concentration, lateral microphase separation occurred faster than that without mNPs, but at higher concentration, the underlying self-assembled diblock copolymer structure is no longer correlated with the mNPs assembly. Increasing the annealing time of the PS-b-PMMA/mNPs nanocomposite thin film causes a similar effect as that of increasing the concentration of mNPs.
Effects of magnetic field on polymerization of aniline and performance of polyaniline

Abstract:Polyaniline(PAn) was prepared by chemical oxidation in the system of microemulsion consisting of aniline,emulsifier,assistant emulsifier and water under the presence of constant magnetic field of different intensity.The effects of magnetic field on the polymerization rate,relative molecular mass and conductivity of PAn were studied.The structure of PAn was characterized by infrared spectrum.The results show that the polymerization rate,relative molecular mass and conductivity of PAn are enhanced in the presence of magnetic filed,and no effect of magnetic field on the basic structural units of PAn is observed;within the range of the magnetic induction intensity studied,the magnetic field of 0.4 T exerts a great influence on polymerization of aniline.The time of the polymerization decreases from 4 h to 1 h,the inherent viscosity increases from 53.4 mL/g to 72.6 mL/g and the conductivity of PAn increases by about one time at 0.4 T compared with that of PAn at 0 T.

Abstract:The conductive polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by microemulsion polymerization in the presence of magnetic field. The effects of the magnetic field and preparation conditions such as the oxidant concentration and the polymerization time on the electrochemical properties of PANI were discussed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using the carbon paper loaded with PANT as working electrode, and the reliability of CV characterization result was proved by the analysis of the FTIR spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and four-probe conductivity measurements. The experimental results showed that compared with the PANI synthesized in the absence of a magnetic field, the PANI synthesized in the presence of magnetic field exhibited significant improvement in the crystalline degree and the conductivity properties. FTIR results indicated that the interaction force between molecules reduced, the delocalization of molecular chain increased,and the main characteristic peaks of the PANI prepared in the presence of magnetic field had the trend of moving to low-frequency due to the orientation effect of magnetic field, but the influence of magnetization on the basic structural units of PANT was not observed. The results indicate that electrochemical behavior of the PANI synthesized by microemulsion polymerization can be real-time characterized efficiently by using the carbon paper loaded with PANT as working electrode.
