Abstract:An experiment is described where a pendulum bob was allowed to roll back and forth across an inclined plane. The period of oscillation is larger than that for oscillation in a vertical plane, in part because the effective value of g is reduced on an inclined plane. The experiment highlights the differences between all three common forms of friction, namely sliding, rolling and static friction.

Abstract:An elastic rod, straight in its undeformed state, has a mass attached at one end and a variable length, due to a constraint at the other end by a frictionless sliding sleeve. The constraint is arranged with the sliding direction parallel to a gravity field, in a way that the rod can freely slip inside of the sleeve, when the latter is not moving. In this case, the free fall of the mass continues until the rod is completely injected into the constraint. However, when the sliding sleeve is subject to a harmonic transverse vibration, it is shown that the fall of the mass and the rod injection are hindered by the presence of a configurational force developing at the sliding sleeve and acting oppositely to gravity. During the dynamic motion, such a configurational force is varying in time because it is associated with the variable bending moment at the sleeve entrance. It is (experimentally, analytically, and numerically) demonstrated that, in addition to the states of complete injection or ejection of the elastic rod (for which the mass falls down or is thrown out), a stable sustained oscillation around a finite height can be realized. This 'suspended motion' is the signature of a new attractor, that arises by the constraint oscillation. This behaviour shares similarities with parametric oscillators, as for instance the Kapitza inverted pendulum. However, differently from the classical parametric oscillators, the 'suspended' configuration of the rod violates equilibrium and the stabilization occurs through a transverse mechanical input, instead of a longitudinal one. By varying the sliding sleeve oscillation amplitude and frequency within specific sets of values, the system spontaneously adjusts the sustained motion through a self-tuning of the rod's external length. This self-tuning property opens the way to the design of vibration-based devices with extended frequency range.

A Simple Discussion For Undamped Duffing Impact Oscillator

Abstract:Most vibro-impact oscillators in engineering applications appear to include nonlinear stiffness or damping, but little attention has been paid to this kind of oscillator. Thus, in present paper, a physical model for an undamped and periodically forced Duffing oscillator with a constraint which leads to motions impacts was analyzed. Computational method was used to solve the nonlinear governing equations. Rich dynamical behaviors including periodic motion, chaotic motion, chattering and grazing were observed in this simple system. Influence of non-dimensional system parameters including the nonlinear stiffness coefficient beta, the forced frequency Omega, the clearance Delta on motion character of the system were also discussed through corresponding bifurcation diagrams. It is supposed that: (a) chattering appears when Delta less than certain threshold. (b) chaotic motion arises when beta larger than certain threshold. (c) grazing bifurcation occurs when r larger than certain threshold.

Abstract:An inverted pendulum can be stabilised by hand or by a high frequency sinusoidal vertical oscillation of the bottom end or by feedback control if a horizontal force is applied at the bottom end. The pendulum is unstable if a sinusoidal force is applied in a horizontal direction at the bottom end. It is shown in the present paper that an inverted pendulum can be stabilised if a low frequency horizontal force is applied at the bottom end to right the pendulum after it falls through a small angle. The technique requires a measurement of the fall angle but is not not sensitive to the actual fall angle. The technique represents a simple example of feedback control and is more easily understood than vertical oscillation of the bottom end.

Abstract:A simple experiment is described where a metal ring was rotated by hand on a horizontal rod. The ring rotated about 100 times before coming to a stop, so the friction force on the ring remained very small. However, measurements of the rotation frequencies of the ring around the rod and around its centre of mass indicated that the ring was sliding rather than rolling, with an unusually low coefficient of sliding friction. The results can be explained if any given contact point on the ring slides to a stop when it first contacts the rod.

Abstract:The friction force on a circular object rolling without sliding down an inclined plane is due to static friction. If the object commences in a sliding mode at the top of the incline, and if the incline angle is small, then a small additional sliding friction force arises to reduce the sliding speed of the contact point to zero if the incline is sufficiently long. While the object is sliding, the total friction force is equal to the static friction force plus the sliding friction force. The effect is described theoretically and is supported by measurements of the linear and angular velocities of a ball that commences to slide down a smooth incline.

Oscillations of a suspended slinky

Abstract:This paper discusses the oscillations of a spring (slinky) under its own weight. A discrete model, describing the slinky by $N$ springs and $N$ masses, is introduced and compared to a continuous treatment. One interesting result is that the upper part of the slinky performs a triangular oscillation whereas the bottom part performs an almost harmonic oscillation if the slinky starts with "natural" initial conditions, where the spring is just pulled further down from its rest position under gravity and then released. It is also shown that the period of the oscillation is simply given by $T=\sqrt{32 L/g}$, where $L$ is the length of the slinky under its own weight and $g$ the acceleration of gravity independent of the other properties of the spring.

Abstract:The Foucault pendulum provides a demonstration of the turning of the Earth. The principle at work is that linear oscillations of a two-degree-of-freedom isotropic harmonic oscillator remain unchanged in an inertial frame of reference, so appear to precess in a rotating frame of reference. In recent work, we applied two-degree-of-freedom isotropic oscillators to mechanical timekeeping. In this paper, we note that the spherical oscillators we considered have qualitatively different behavior in a non-inertial frame. We show that when in a rotating frame, linear oscillations precess at one half the rotational speed of the rotating frame. We validate this result experimentally by designing and constructing a proof of concept demonstrator placed on a motorized rotating table. The demonstrator consists of a spherical isotropic oscillator, a launcher to place the oscillator on planar orbits, a motorized rotating table, video recording for qualitative observation, and a laser measurement setup for quantitative results. The experimental data recorded by the lasers strongly validate the physical phenomenon.

Abstract:The nonlinear mechanics of a flexible elastic rod constrained at its edges by a pair of sliding sleeves is analyzed. The planar equilibrium configurations of this variable-length elastica are found to have shape defined only by the inclination of the two constraints, while their distance is responsible only for scaling the size. By extending the theoretical stability criterion available for systems under isoperimetric constraints to the case of variable domains, the existence of no more than one stable equilibrium solution is revealed. The set of sliding sleeves' inclination pairs for which the stability is lost are identified. Such critical conditions allow the indefinite ejection of the flexible rod from the sliding sleeves, thus realizing an elastica sling. Finally, the theoretical findings are validated by experiments on a physical prototype. The present results lead to a novel actuation principle that may find application as a mechanism in energy harvesting, wave mitigation devices, and soft robotic locomotion.

A Jumping Cylinder on an Incline

Abstract:The problem of a cylinder of mass m and radius r, with its center of mass out of the cylinder axis, rolling on an incline that makes an angle with respect to the horizontal is analyzed. The equation of motion is partially solved to obtain the site where the cylinder loses contact with the incline (jumps). Several simplifications are made: the analyzed system consists of an homogeneous disc with a one dimensional straight line of mass parallel to the disc axis at a distance y < r of the center of the cylinder. To compare our results with experimental data, we use a Styrofoam cylinder to which a long brass rod was imbibed parallel to the disc axis at a distance y < r from it, so the center of mass lies at a distance d from the center of the cylinder. Then the disc rolls without slipping on a long wooden ramp inclined at 15, 30 and 45 degrees with respect to the horizontal. To determine the jumping site, the motion was recorded with a high-speed video camera (Casio EX ZR100) at 200 and 480 frames per second. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The notched stick, also known as the Gee-Haw-Whammy-Diddle, is a wooden toy able to convert linear vibration into rotational motion, whose behavior has been intriguing both children and physicists for decades. Here we derive an analytical model of the system, supported by experimental results. We predict the direction of rotation, and explain why the device is so easy to operate, even without fine control of the various parameters. The potential importance of the vertical displacement of the finger exerting the perturbation force is also highlighted. We finally discuss similarities between the mechanical system described here and the optical effect of birefringence.

Down-hill creep of a granular material under expansion/contraction cycles

Abstract:We investigate the down-hill creep of an inclined layer of granular material caused by quasi-static oscillatory variations of the size of the particles. The size variation is taken to be maximum at the surface and decreasing with depth, as it may be argued to occur in the case of a granular soil affected by atmospheric conditions. The material is modeled as an athermal two dimensional polydisperse system of soft disks under the action of gravity. The slope angle is below the angle of repose and therefore the system reaches an equilibrium configuration under static external conditions. However, under a protocol in which particles slowly change size in a quasistatic oscillatory way, the system is observed to creep down in a synchronized way with the oscillation. We measure the creep advance per cycle as a function of the slope angle and the degree of change in particle size. We also find that the creep rate is maximum at the surface and smoothly decreases with depth, as it is observed to occur in the field.

Abstract:International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education, Ahead of Print. The Lagrange method is applied to two dynamic models of a Slinky, one based on point masses and linear springs and a second where the Slinky is represented as a sequence of half hoops connected by torsion springs. For the first time, the use of Lagrange's method applied to a Slinky has produced a multi-body dynamic model that can potentially with minor modification reproduce all the interesting behaviour Slinkies are well known for; descending stairs, pseudo levitation, transmission of longitudinal and transverse waves. In this paper, the models are derived and a limited exploration of the two dynamic models' behaviour is considered. For unforced oscillation, the point mass model and torsion spring model produce a similar amplitude and frequency. When considering forced oscillations, the point mass model has a very different spectrum of natural frequencies than the torsion spring model. The torsion spring model is considered for different forcing conditions.

Abstract:A simple text book problem in mechanics\cite{klep}, describes a massive horizontal bar placed on two oppositely rotating rollers, kept at a fixed center to center distance. Subsequent motion is to be found out in presence of kinetic frictions at the point of contacts of the two rollers\cite{demo}. Introducing bulk rolling friction effects, through the contact planes and considering viscoelastic rollers, we find that the inverse of the square of the oscillation frequency of the bar has a linear relationship with the center to center distance. The gradient and intercept of the linear relation together with observations about two consecutive positions of the bar, determine the rolling friction coefficient of the viscoelastic materials of the two rollers fully.

Abstract:We report an instability of a slider slowly dragged at the surface of a granular bed in a quasistatic regime. The boat-shaped slider sits on the granular medium under its own weight and is free to translate vertically and to rotate around the pitch axis while a constant horizontal speed is imposed. For a wide range of parameters (mass, length, shape, velocity) a regular pattern of peaks and troughs spontaneously emerges as the slider travels forward. This instability is studied through experiments using a conveyor belt and by means of two-dimensional discrete elements method simulations. We show that the wavelength and amplitude of the pattern scale as the length of the slider. We also observe that the ripples disappear for low and high masses, indicating an optimal confining pressure. The effect of the shape, more specifically the inclination of the front spatula, is studied and found to drastically influence both the wavelength and the amplitude. Finally, we show that the mechanical details (friction, cohesion) of the contact point between the slider and the pulling device is critical and remains to be fully understood.

Abstract:A liquid meniscus, a bending rod (also called elastica) and a simple pendulum are all described by the same non-dimensional equation. The oscillatory regime of the pendulum corresponds to buckling rods and pendant drops, and the high-velocity regime corresponds to spherical drops, puddles and multiple rod loopings. We study this analogy in a didactic way and discuss how, despite this common governing equation, the three systems are not completely equivalent. We also consider the cylindrical deformations of an inextensible, flexible membrane containing a liquid, which in some sense interpolates between the meniscus and rod conformations.

Abstract:Investigated are sliding motions of a rigid body on a harmonically driven inclined plane. Coulomb’s law with a random coefficient of friction is assumed. The mean sliding velocity in a steady state of deterministic motions is taken as a measure to compare deterministic with stochastic behavior.
