Jade Snow Wong and the Fate of Chinese-American Identity

Abstract:Perhaps the most important obstacle to the preservation of personal se! determination by Asians in America is the threat of cultural extinction. Becaus Asians in America comprise only one-half of one percent of the American population in total, it is in theory only a matter of time before Asian American cultural identity disappears into what race relations expert Peter Rose adroitly terms “the cultural fondue . Immigration to the United States from Asia and the continuance of ethnic enclaves such as San Francisco and New York Chinatown will retard the speed of this progress. but they in themselves can neither reverse its inevitability nor mitigate the psychological anxiety and confusion that sometimes is engendered by being a member of a minority race in America. Assuming that the right to determine one’s own lifestyle and culture is a basic and inherent human right and that not all Asians in America desire to become fully assimilated, it is both logical and necessary to define the essential elements of Asian American cultures. Only with such definitions and a clear understanding of those forces working to preserve and subvert Asian American cultures will it be possible for the individual Asian American to evaluate the cultural alternatives available to him and to exercise his independent right to personal and cultural self-de tennina tion. It is far beyond the scope of this essay to propose a complex theory about the relationship between minority and majority cultures in a given society. Rather, by examining the life of one Chinese-American, it is hoped that some of the principal elements of Chinese-American identity can be specified and that some of the forces effecting its future can be suggested. Probably the best-known and most lucidly written autobiography for the study of Chinese-American identity is Jade Snow Wong’s classic account of a Chinese girlhood, Fifth Chinese Daughter. Published in 1950, it has enjoyed success as a best seller in America as well a s being translated into Chinese, Japanese, Thai, German. Austrian, Urdu, Burmese and Indonesian under the auspices of the United States State Department. Fifth Chinese Daughter is enlightening for a variety of reasons. It is an accurate and vivid account of growing-up in San Francisco Chinatown during the 1920’s, 193O’s, and 194O’s, an entertaining autobiography of a young woman, and the success story of an immigrant member of a minority race in America.
