Abstract:The effective detection of formaldehyde is of great importance to people's daily life. Titanium oxide (TiO2) based nanomaterials have great promise for formaldehyde detection due to their wide availability, easy utilization and abundant surface reactions. However, currently their actual application is still limited by their relatively low sensitivity, high working temperature and poor selectivity. To address these issues, herein we develop a template-assisted self-assembly strategy to realize the simultaneous chemical doping and morphological control of TiO2 nanostructures. The resultant Co-doped TiO2 nanospheres show a cobalt content of up to 2.95 wt% and a unique raspberry-like mesoporous morphology composed of numerous superfine nanopores of 4.9-7.8 nm, which provides a large specific surface area (similar to 175 m(2) g(-1)) and high porosity (0.438 cm(3) g(-1)) to the product. The gas sensor device shows a sensitivity of similar to 84.8 for 10 ppm formaldehyde, which exceeds that of most of the similar metal oxides reported recently and likely stands for the state-of-the-art merit of formaldehyde sensors. Meanwhile, the sensor also shows significantly decreased working temperature (similar to 86 degrees C) and unique selectivity. All this makes our chemically doped raspberry-like mesoporous TiO2 product a very promising candidate for future formaldehyde sensors.
Highly Sensitive and Selective Room-Temperature Formaldehyde Sensors Using Hollow TiO2 Microspheres

Abstract:Room temperature chemoresistive gas sensors could significantly decrease the demand of power consumption and are thus highly desirable in self-sustained nanosensors. Here we report that chemoresistive sensors fabricated from mesoporous hollow TiO2 microspheres show high sensitivity and selectivity to sub-ppm level of formaldehyde at room temperature with the assistance of low powered UV LED photon energy (2.5mW). The sensor indicated excellent selectivity to other possible interferrents such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, ammonia and methylbenzene at low concentrations. These sensors have a much faster response (∼40s)/recovery (∼50s) characteristic, which significantly surpass the sensing properties shown by other types of nanostructured TiO2 reported in literature.

We herein demonstrate an efficient strategy of reducing the adsorption energy and improving the carrier mobility via bulk implanted TiO 2 nanocrystals (NCs) in LaFeO 3 porous structure. By implanting laser generated sub-3 nm TiO 2 NCs in LaFeO 3 samples, the response value (221.8 for 100 ppm formaldehyde) increases about 4 times comparing with that of pristine. Additionally, the sample exhibits high sensitivity and fast response/recovery speed toward formaldehyde steam. The detailed analyses and theoretical calculation proves that the TiO 2 NCs could cause the increase of adsorbed oxygen levels as well as the carrier mobility through forming the heterojunction with LaFeO 3 . This work verifies that TiO 2 NCs implanted LaFeO 3 is a promising formaldehyde sensing material, which provides a new approach to improve sensing ability of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) based gas sensors.

Synthesis of 1D LaFeO3 Nanofibers/2d MXene Heterostructures for Formaldehyde Detection at Low Temperature

Abstract:Gas sensors play an indispensable role in air quality monitoring. In this paper, the LaFeO3 nanofibers/Ti3C2TX MXene composite sensor composed of one-dimensional (1D) porous LaFeO3 nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2TX MXene nanosheets was prepared by electrospinning and electrostatic self-assembly technology. The morphology, structure and phase composition were analyzed by various techniques. The results show that the diameter of LaFeO3 nanofibers is about 150nm, and the fibers are evenly distributed on the surface of the accordion-like MXene multilayer nanosheets. Gas-sensing test data show that compared with pure LaFeO3, LaFeO3 nanofibers/Ti3C2TX MXene composite sensor has excellent response value (18.86) and better stability to formaldehyde gas. Besides, its optimal operating temperature is reduced from the original 180 ℃ to 60 ℃, which widens its practical application range. On this basis, the sensing mechanism is discussed in detail by surface oxygen adsorption and space charge model, and the density functional theory (DFT) is used to analyze the sensing mechanism. The improvement of the response value is mainly attributed to the unique morphology and structure, the increase of specific surface area and the formation of p-p heterojunction. This study provides a new idea and innovative way for LaFeO3-based gas sensors.
3D Porous Ti3C2Tx MXene/rGO/SnO2 Aerogel for Formaldehyde Detection at Room Temperature

Abstract:The high-performance formaldehyde sensor is an ideal choice for industrial gas detection and environmental gas analysis. In this article, the 3D Ti3C2Tx MXene/rGO/SnO2 aerogle was successfully fabricated via a simple one-step solvothermal route. The composite structures and morphology were characterized by an array of testing techniques. According to the gas measurement, the 3D Ti3C2Tx MXene/rGO/SnO2 sensor exhibited 54.97% sensing response in 10 ppm formaldehyde at room temperature (RT). Not only that, the 3D Ti3C2Tx MXene/rGO/SnO2-based sensor indicated an excellent sensing selectivity, short response and recovery times (2.9 and 2.2 s, separately), good repeatability and stability. A general formaldehyde sensing mechanism with a ternary architectural was proposed and supported through density functional theory (DFT) calculations data, which has been sufficiently shown to be a promising candidate for the design of efficient formaldehyde sensor. Abstract:Among the various hazardous substances, formaldehyde (HCHO), produced worldwide from wood furniture, dyeing auxiliaries, or as a preservative in consumer products, is harmful to human health. In this study, a sensitive room-temperature HCHO sensor, MTiNCs/Pd, has been developed by integrating Pd nanoclusters (PdNCs) into mesoporous MIL-125(Ti)-decorated TiO2 nanochannel arrays (TiNCs). Thanks to the enrichment effect of the mesoporous structure of MIL-125 and the large surface area offered by TiNCs, the resulting gas sensor accesses significantly enhanced HCHO adsorption capacity. The sufficient energetic active defects formed on PdNCs further allow an electron-extracting effect, thus effectively separating the photogenerated electrons and holes at the interface. The resulting HCHO sensor exhibits a short response/recovery time (37 s/12 s) and excellent sensitivity with a low limit of detection (4.51 ppb) under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. More importantly, the cyclic redox reactions of Pdδ+ in PdNCs facilitated the regeneration of O2-(ads), thus ensuring a stable and excellent gas sensing performance even under a high-humidity environment. As a proof-of-principle of this design, a wearable gas sensing band is developed for the real-time and on-site detection of HCHO in cigarette smoke, with the potential as an independent device for environmental monitoring and other smart sensing systems.
UV-Activated Au Modified TiO2/In2O3 Hollow Nanospheres for Formaldehyde Detection at Room Temperature

Abstract:Au modified TiO2/In2O3 hollow nanospheres were synthesized by the hydrolysis method using the carbon nanospheres as a sacrificial template. Compared to pure In2O3, pure TiO2, and TiO2/In2O3 based sensors, the Au/TiO2/In2O3 nanosphere-based chemiresistive-type sensor exhibited excellent sensing performances to formaldehyde at room temperature under ultraviolet light (UV-LED) activation. The response of the Au/TiO2/In2O3 nanocomposite-based sensor to 1 ppm formaldehyde was about 5.6, which is higher than that of In2O3 (1.6), TiO2 (2.1), and TiO2/In2O3 (3.8). The response time and recovery time of the Au/TiO2/In2O3 nanocomposite sensor were 18 s and 42 s, respectively. The detectable formaldehyde concentration could go down as low as 60 ppb. In situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to analyze the chemical reactions on the surface of the sensor activated by UV light. The improvement in the sensing properties of the Au/TiO2/In2O3 nanocomposites could be attributed to the nanoheterojunctions and electronic/chemical sensitization of the Au nanoparticles.

Abstract:A high-performance formaldehyde sensor based on nickel (Ni)-doped indium trioxide (In2O3)/tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanocomposite was demonstrated. An epoxy substrate served as matrix of the Ni-In2O3/WS2 nanocomposite sensor. The material properties of self-assembled Ni-In2O3/WS2 nanoheterostructure were fully characterized and confirmed. The formaldehyde-sensing properties of the Ni-In2O3/WS2 composite were tested at 25 °C. Compared to the In2O3, WS2, and their composite, the Ni-In2O3/WS2 sensor demonstrated significant improvement on the formaldehyde-sensing performance, including a low detection limit of 15 ppb, good selectivity, repeatability, fast detection rate, and a fair logarithmic function toward formaldehyde concentration. The dramatically enhanced sensing performance of Ni-In2O3/WS2 film sensor can be attributed to the Ni ion doping and synergistic interfacial incorporation of In2O3/WS2 heterojunction. The sensitive mechanism of the Ni-In2O3/WS2 film sensor toward formaldehyde is explored through density functional theory (DFT) simulation. This work verified that the synthesis of Ni-doped In2O3/WS2 nanofilm provides a new avenue to develop promising hybrids for formaldehyde sensing.

Abstract:In this work, nanocomposites of pre-oxidized Ti3C2Tx MXene and SnO2 nanosheets are prepared by facile synthesis and annealing process for formaldehyde sensors. The Ti3C2Tx MXene is pre-oxidized intentionally to avoid further degradation, which is verified with Raman, TEM and XPS. The morphology and structure of the SnO2/MXene nanocomposites are characterized with XRD, SEM and TEM. The gas sensor based on the nanocomposites with 1 wt% Ti3C2Tx MXene achieves high response, low limit of detection, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and superior long-term stability. An optimal response of 38.6 is reached at 160 °C to 20 ppm formaldehyde and a limit of detection as low as 50 ppb is successfully achieved. The sensing properties are dependent on the amount of Ti3C2Tx MXene, and a sensing mechanism has been proposed for the performance enhancement by the synergistic effect between the pre-oxidized Ti3C2Tx MXene and the SnO2 nanosheets.

Abstract:Au-decorated hollow TiO2 nanospheres were synthesized via a template method subsequently followed by the reduction of Au nanoparticles decorated on the surface of TiO2. The diameter of the hollow TiO2 nanospheres is 150-200 nm and the thickness of the shell layer is 10-15 nm. The particle size of Au nanoparticles on the surface of TiO2 nanospheres is about 15 nm. The 1 mol% Au-decorated hollow TiO2 nanospheres based chemiresistive-type sensor exhibited a much improved sensing performance to formaldehyde under Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at room temperature. The response of the sensor to 5 ppm formaldehyde is about 8.5, which is three times higher than that of the pure hollow TiO2 nanospheres based one. The response and recovery time of the sensor to 5 ppm formaldehyde is 36 s and 110 s, respectively. The mechanisms of both electronic and chemical sensitizations induced by Au nanoparticles and the hollow structure were proposed for the enhanced sensing properties.
Porous Ga-In Bimetallic Oxide Nanofibers with Controllable Structures for Ultrasensitive and Selective Detection of Formaldehyde

Abstract:The design of appropriate composite materials with unique surface structures is an important strategy to achieve ideal chemical gas sensing. In this paper, efficient and selective detection of formaldehyde vapor has been realized by a gas sensor based on porous GaxIn2-xO3 nanofibers assembled by small building blocks. By tuning the Ga/In atomic ratios in the materials, crystallite phase, nanostructure, and band gap of as-obtained GaxIn2-xO3 nanofibers can be rationally altered. This further offers a good opportunity to optimize the gas sensing performances. In particular, the sensor based on porous Ga0.6In1.4O3 nanofibers assembled by small nanoparticles (∼4.6 nm) exhibits best sensing performances. Toward 100 ppm formaldehyde, its highest response (Ra/Rg = 52.4, at 150 °C) is ∼4 times higher than that of the pure In2O3 (Ra/Rg = 13.0, at 200 °C). Meanwhile, it has superior ability to selectively detect formaldehyde against other interfering volatile organic compound gases. The significantly improved sensing performance makes the Ga0.6In1.4O3 sensor very promising for selective detection of formaldehyde.
Rational Design of SnO2 Hollow Microspheres Functionalized with Derivatives of Pt Loaded MOFs for Superior Formaldehyde Detection

Abstract:In this work, SnO2 hollow microspheres functionalized with different incorporated amounts of Pt@Co3O4 complex catalyst were innovatively designed by using an MOF template. The results show that sensor based on the optimal incorporated amount of Pt@Co3O4 not only greatly enhances the response value of SnO2 to formaldehyde (Rair/Rformaldehyde = 4240 toward 100 ppm) but also decreases the low detection limit (50 ppb), which is quite outstanding compared with other SnO2-based formaldehyde sensors. Further analysis proves that the content of oxygen vacancy and chemisorbed oxygen and the catalytic effect of ultra-small Pt play the key roles in improving the formaldehyde sensing performance. Meanwhile, this present work demonstrates that oxide semiconductors functionalized with the derivatives of MOF templated catalysts may lead to the discovery of new material systems with outstanding sensing performance.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a significant air pollutant that is extremely harmful to both the human health and environments. Therefore, it is necessary to detect HCHO gas concentration and leakage in special regions at RT. This paper reported a facile preparation of Au-In2O3/Ti(3)C(2)T(x )MXene composites by in-situ reduction strategy and subsequent electrostatic self-assembly technology. An array of characterizations were performed to analyze the structure of the as-synthesized sensing material. The formed Au-In2O3/Ti3C2Tx MXene based sensor exhibited a prominent sensitivity (31 %) to 5 ppm HCHO at RT of 25 ? (21 % relative humidity). Moreover, the composites sensor possesses excellent long-term stability, the response/recovery rate is very rapid (5/4 s) and notable reproducibility (three cycles). The enhanced sensing properties could be put down to the catalytic effect of Au NPs, and the heterojunction and the cooperative effect between In2O3 and Ti3C2Tx MXene. Meanwhile, the potential sensing mechanism of the composite sensor to HCHO was explored via density functional theory (DFT) simulations. This research provides an efficient tactic for the prepared of high-response HCHO-sensing material for actual application.

Abstract:A flexible gas sensor based on carbon quantum dot decorated TiO 2 nanofibers (CQD/TiO 2 ) was prepared by hydrothermal and electrostatic spinning methods to detect formaldehyde at room temperature. SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD and XPS were used to analyze the morphology, structure and composition of the composite. The gas sensing test results show that the working temperature of the material is reduced to room temperature by UV excitation, and subsequently, CQD/TiO 2 exhibits a lower detection limit and faster response/recovery time for formaldehyde by carbon material modification. The flexibility test of CQD/TiO 2 shows that the composite material of metal oxide and carbon material has a certain degree of flexibility. The enhanced sensing performance by UV excitation and CQD modification is attributed mainly to the photogenerated electron transfer and the formation of p-n heterojunctions. The modification of TiO 2 with carbon quantum dots provides an experimental reference for the development of room-temperature flexible MOS-based formaldehyde sensors.

Abstract:Here we present a class of formaldehyde (HCHO) gas sensors with strong responses based on ordered mesostructured In2O3 nanorod arrays, which are synthesized via the nanocastiniz route by directly using the solvent-extracted mesoporous silica as a hard template. By choosing mesoporous silica with different pore sizes and interconnectivity as templates and varying the loading of indium resource on the silica template, we have obtained a series of mesostructured In2O3 nanorod arrays with different textural parameters such as specific surface area, pore size, nanorod diameter, etc. The gas sensing properties for formaldehyde (HCHO) of the In2O3 specimens were examined. The results reveal those mesostructured In2O3 nanorod arrays possess much stronger responses to HCHO even at low concentrations than the bulk In2O3, and larger specific surface areas and pore sizes as well as smaller nanorod diameters would be beneficial for enhancing the sensing properties of In2O3.
High-performance Formaldehyde Sensing Realized by Alkaline-Earth Metals Doped In2O3 Nanotubes with Optimized Surface Properties

Abstract:Although many formaldehyde sensing materials have been developed, it is still a great challenge to get sensing materials with good selectivity. To achieve better sensing selectivity, tuning the chemical state and the amount of oxygen absorbed on the surface of semiconductor metal oxides are effective strategies. In this work, alkaline-earth elements doped In2O3 nanotubes are prepared by an electrospinning method. According to the XPS results, work function of the material and the chemical adsorption analysis, it can be concluded that the Fermi level, the basicity of the material, the activity and the amount of oxygen chemisorbed on In2O3 can be tuned by the additional alkaline-earth elements and enhance the sensing selectivity. The sensor based on 5% Ca-In2O3 shows the highest response of 116 to 100 ppm formaldehyde which is about 4.5 and 10 times higher than those of ethanol and acetone at 100 ppm and becomes the most selective among those products.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a harmful gas to human health. Here, the CaFe2O4 nanocubes have been successfully synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method. The characterizations of the CaFe2O4 have been carried out, such as XRD, BET, TEM and XPS, etc. The gas-sensing performance of the CaFe2O4 to HCHO has been investigated. The CaFe2O4 based sensor displays high gas response (16.50), fast response-recovery time (153 s, 54 s), excellent humidityresistance and longtime stability. This unique CaFe2O4 nanocube can be used as a hopeful HCHO gas sensing material.
