Abstract:In this paper we investigate the gravothermal instability of spherical stellar systems endowed with a radially anisotropic velocity distribution. We focus our attention on the effects of anisotropy on the conditions for the onset of the instability and in particular we study the dependence of the spatial structure of critical models on the amount of anisotropy present in a system. The investigation has been carried out by the method of linear series which has already been used in the past to study the gravothermal instability of isotropic systems. We consider models described by King, Wilson and Woolley-Dickens distribution functions. In the case of King and Woolley-Dickens models, our results show that, for quite a wide range of amount of anisotropy in the system, the critical value of the concentration of the system (defined as the ratio of the tidal to the King core radius of the system) is approximately constant and equal to the corresponding value for isotropic systems. Only for very anisotropic systems the critical value of the concentration starts to change and it decreases significantly as the anisotropy increases and penetrates the inner parts of the system. For Wilson models the decrease of the concentration of critical models is preceded by an intermediate regime in which critical concentration increases, it reaches a maximum and then it starts to decrease. The critical value of the central potential always decreases as the anisotropy increases.

Abstract:We present results from a suite of eight direct N-body simulations, performed with nbody6++ GPU, representing realistic models of rotating star clusters with up to 1.1 x 10(5) stars. Our models feature primordial (hard) binaries, a continuous mass spectrum, differential rotation, and tidal mass-loss induced by the overall gravitational field of the host galaxy. We explore the impact of rotation and stellar evolution on the star cluster dynamics. In all runs for rotating star clusters, we detect a previously predicted mechanism: an initial phase of violent relaxation followed by the so-called gravogyro catastrophe. We find that the gravogyro catastrophe reaches a finite amplitude, which depends in strength on the level of the bulk rotation, and then levels off. After this phase, the angular momentum is transferred from high-mass to low-mass particles in the cluster (both stars and compact objects). Simultaneously, the system becomes gravothermally unstable and collapses, thus undergoing the so-called gravothermal-gravogyro catastrophe. Comparing models with and without stellar evolution, we find an interesting difference. When stellar evolution is not considered, the whole process proceeds at a faster pace. The population of heavy objects tends to form a triaxial structure that rotates in the cluster centre. When stellar evolution is considered, we find that such a rotating bar is populated by stellar black holes and their progenitors. The triaxial structure becomes axisymmetric over time, but we also find that the models without stellar evolution suffer repeated gravogyro catastrophes as sufficient angular momentum and mass are removed by the tidal field.
Rotation and Relaxation in Dense Star Clusters and Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:The concept of two-body relaxation in systems consisting of initially uncorrelated point masses, which drives core collapse and gravothermal core oscillations in (globular) star clusters and generates steady-state density cusps around massive black holes in galactic nuclei is a simple, traditional but very successful concept to understand the physical behaviour of many gravitating N-body systems, despite of its obvious lack of realism (finite size of stars, dynamics coupled to stellar evolution processes, primordial binaries). It is shown how a moderate amount of initial rotation and a certain initial fraction of binaries ("primordial binaries") change the standard evolutionary features even on that fundamental theoretical level. Two-dimensional projected profiles of densities, velocity dispersions, and rotational velocities can be deduced from our self-consistent evolutionary models. For the first time self-consistent distributions of a large number of primordial binaries, evolving self-consistently in and with a surrounding star cluster are presented. A review of further refinements of star cluster models from other work in the field will be given, which are necessary steps on the road to realistic astrophysical star cluster simulations, with a comparative assessment of the different physical models used in the field.
Gravothermalizing into primordial black holes, boson stars, and cannibal stars

Abstract:Very little is known about the cosmological history from after the end of inflation until Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Various well-motivated models predict that the universe could have undergone a period of matter domination in this early epoch. We demonstrate that if the particles causing matter domination have self-interactions, they can form halos that undergo a gravothermal collapse. This scenario, in principle, provides a novel way to produce primordial black holes within the mass range of $1$ to $10^{26}$ g. We also find that it is not only black holes that can form in the aftermath of a gravothermal evolution. In particular, we show that number-changing annihilations of the particles can create sufficient heat to halt the gravothermal evolution, thus forming a "cannibal star". Likewise, the pressure from the particle's repulsive self-interactions can form a boson star during a gravothermal evolution. Thus, our study highlights that structure formation in the early universe can have a rich complexity.

Gravitational Waves from Axisymmetric, Rotational Stellar Core Collapse

Abstract:We have carried out an extensive set of two-dimensional, axisymmetric, purely-hydrodynamic calculations of rotational stellar core collapse with a realistic, finite-temperature nuclear equation of state and realistic massive star progenitor models. For each of the total number of 72 different simulations we performed, the gravitational wave signature was extracted via the quadrupole formula in the slow-motion, weak-field approximation. We investigate the consequences of variation in the initial ratio of rotational kinetic energy to gravitational potential energy and in the initial degree of differential rotation. Furthermore, we include in our model suite progenitors from recent evolutionary calculations that take into account the effects of rotation and magnetic torques. For each model, we calculate gravitational radiation wave forms, characteristic wave strain spectra, energy spectra, final rotational profiles, and total radiated energy. In addition, we compare our model signals with the anticipated sensitivities of the 1st- and 2nd-generation LIGO detectors coming on line. We find that most of our models are detectable by LIGO from anywhere in the Milky Way.

Abstract:The evolution of spherical single-mass star clusters driven by two-body relaxation was followed beyond core collapse by numerically solving the orbit-averaged Fokker-Planck equation in energy--angular momentum space. The heating effect by three-body binaries was incorporated in the Fokker-Planck models. The development of velocity anisotropy after the core collapse is discussed in detail. The anisotropy in the outer regions continues to increase slowly after the collapse. In clusters comprising a relatively small number of stars ($N \ltsim 10000$), the post-collapse expansion is nearly self-similar and the anisotropy at each of inner Lagrangian radii is nearly constant. In clusters comprising a larger number of stars ($N \gtsim 10000$), gravothermal oscillations occur and the anisotropy at each of the inner radii oscillates with the core oscillations. There is no qualitative difference in the nature of the gravothermal oscillations between the isotropic and anisotropic Fokker-Planck models.

Abstract:Theoretical and numerical studies have shown that large-scale vortices in Protoplanetary discs can result from various hydrodynamical instabilities. Once produced, such vortices can survive nearly unchanged over a large number of rotation periods, slowly migrating towards the star. In the outer disc, self-gravity may affect the vortex evolution and must be included in models. We performed 2D hydrodynamic simulations using the RoSSBi3D code. The outline of our computations was limited to Euler's equations assuming a non-homentropic and non-adiabatic flow for an ideal gas. A series of 45 runs were carried out starting from a Gaussian vortex-model; the evolution of vortices was followed during 300 orbits for various values of the vortex parameters and the Toomre parameter. Two simulations, with the highest resolution (HR) thus far for studies of vortices, were also run to better characterise the internal structure of the vortices and for the purpose of comparison with an isothermal case. We find that SG tends to destabilise the injected vortices, but compact small-scale vortices seem to be more robust than large-scale oblong vortices. Vortex survival critically depends on the value of the disc's Toomre parameter, but may also depend on the disc temperature at equilibrium. Disc SG must be small enough to avoid destruction in successive splitting and an approximate `stability' criterion is deduced for vortices. The self-gravitating vortices that we found persist during hundreds of rotation periods and look like the quasi-steady vortices obtained in the non-self-gravitating case. A number of these self-gravitating vortices are eventually accompanied by a secondary vortex with a horseshoe motion. These vortices reach a new rotational equilibrium in their core, tend to contract in the radial direction, and spin faster.

Abstract:We have performed hydrodynamic simulations of relativistic rotational supernova core collapse in axisymmetry and have computed the gravitational radiation emitted by such an event. Details of the methodology and of the numerical code have been given in an accompanying paper. We have simulated the evolution of 26 models in both Newtonian and relativistic gravity. Our simulations show that the three different types of rotational supernova core collapse and gravitational waveforms identified in previous Newtonian simulations (regular collapse, multiple bounce collapse, and rapid collapse) are also present in relativistic gravity. However, rotational core collapse with multiple bounces is only possible in a much narrower parameter range in relativistic gravity. The relativistic models cover almost the same range of gravitational wave amplitudes and frequencies as the corresponding Newtonian ones. For a given model, relativistic gravity can cause a large increase of the characteristic signal frequency of up to a factor of five, which may have important consequences for the signal detection. The gravitational wave signals obtained in our study are within the sensitivity range of the first generation laser interferometer detectors if the source is located within the Local Group.

Abstract:Massive stars die in catastrophic explosions, which seed the interstellar medium with heavy elements and produce neutron stars and black holes. Predictions of the explosion's character and the remnant mass depend on models of the star's evolutionary history. Models of massive star interiors can be empirically constrained by asteroseismic observations of gravity wave oscillations. Recent photometric observations reveal a ubiquitous red noise signal on massive main sequence stars; a hypothesized source of this noise is gravity waves driven by core convection. We present the first 3D simulations of massive star convection extending from the star's center to near its surface, with realistic stellar luminosities. Using these simulations, we make the first prediction of photometric variability due to convectively-driven gravity waves at the surfaces of massive stars, and find that gravity waves produce photometric variability of a lower amplitude and lower characteristic frequency than the observed red noise. We infer that the photometric signal of gravity waves excited by core convection is below the noise limit of current observations, so the red noise must be generated by an alternative process.

Observational Diagnostics of Self-Gravitating MHD Turbulence in Giant Molecular Clouds

Abstract:We study the observable signatures of self-gravitating MHD turbulence by applying the probability density functions (PDFs) and the spatial density power spectrum to synthetic column density maps. We find that there exists three characterizable stages of the evolution of the collapsing cloud which we term "early," "intermediate," and "advanced." At early times, i.e. $t<0.15t_{ff}$, the column density has a power spectral slope similar to nongravitating supersonic turbulence and a lognormal distribution. At an intermediate stage, i.e. $0.15t_{ff}< t \leq 0.35t_{ff}$, there exists signatures of the prestellar cores in the shallower PDF and power spectrum power law slopes. The column density PDF power law tails at these times have line of sight averaged slopes ranging from -2.5 to -1.5 with shallower values belonging to simulations with lower magnetic field strength. The density power spectrum slope becomes shallow and can be characterized by $P(k)=A_1k^{\beta_2}e^{-k/k_c}$, where $A_1$ describes the amplitude, $k^{\beta_2}$ describes the classical power law behavior and the scale $k_c$ characterizes the turn over from turbulence dominated to self-gravity dominated. At advanced stages of collapse, i.e. $\approx t>0.35t_{ff}$, the power spectral slope is positive valued, and a dramatic increase is observed in the PDF moments and the Tsallis incremental PDF parameters, which gives rise to deviations between PDF-sonic Mach number relations. Finally, we show that the imprint of gravity on the density power spectrum can be replicated in non-gravitating turbulence by introducing a delta-function with amplitude equivalent to the maximum valued point in a given self-gravitating map. We find that the turbulence power spectrum restored through spatial filtering of the high density material.

Gravothermal collapse and the diversity of galactic rotation curves

Abstract:The rotation curves of spiral galaxies exhibit a great diversity that challenge our understanding of galaxy formation and the nature of dark matter. Previous studies showed that in self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models with a cross section per unit mass of $\sigma/m\approx{\cal O}(1)~{\rm cm^2/g}$, the predicted dark matter central densities are a good match to the observed densities in galaxies. In this work, we explore a regime with a larger cross section of $\sigma/m\approx20-40~{\rm cm^2/g}$ in dwarf galactic halos. We will show that such strong dark matter self-interactions can further amplify the diversity of halo densities inherited from their assembly history. High concentration halos can enter the gravothermal collapse phase within $10~{\rm Gyr}$, resulting in a high density, while low concentration ones remain in the expansion phase and have a low density. We fit the rotation curves of $14$ representative low surface brightness galaxies and demonstrate how the large range of observed central densities are naturally accommodated in the strong SIDM regime of $\sigma/m\approx20-40~{\rm cm^2/g}$. Galaxies that are outliers in the previous studies due to their high halo central densities, are no longer outliers in this SIDM regime as their halos would be in the collapse phase. For galaxies with a low density, the SIDM fits are robust to the variation of the cross section. Our findings open up a new window for testing gravothermal collapse, the unique signature of strong dark matter self-interactions, and exploring broad SIDM model space.

Abstract:A re-investigation of linear perturbation theory is presented, which examines the hydrostatic re-adjustment of an isolated self-gravitating gas sphere to a redistribution of energy. Such a model describes a stellar system by the common equations of gas in hydrostatic equilibrium but with the effect of the anisotropic velocity distribution on the pressure gradient. We take as equilibrium models the singular isothermal solution with and without anisotropy. The total variation of the Boltzmann entropy resulting from a perturbation of the system caused by a redistribution of heat (i.e. rms kinetic energy of the stars) is calculated for anisotropic solutions to first order as well as to second order for the isotropic equilibrium. The extremized eigenfunctions which represent the entropy and anisotropy perturbation functions, are determined analytically. They exhibit gravothermal behaviour in the central region where heat is removed. It is also found that the anisotropy re-adjusts non-thermally in the sense that the system departs from isotropy although the total entropy increases.

Abstract:Using controlled numerical N -body experiments, we show how, in the collapse dynamics of an initially cold and uniform distribution of particles with a generic asymmetric shape, finite N fluctuations and perturbations induced by the anisotropic gravitational field compete to determine the physical properties of the asymptotic quasi-stationary state. When finite N fluctuations dominate the dynamics, the particle energy distribution changes greatly and the final density profile decays outside its core as r −4 with an N -dependent amplitude. On the other hand, in the limit where the anisotropic perturbations dominate, the collapse is softer and the density profile shows a decay as r −3 , as is typical of halos in cosmological simulations. However, even in this limit, convergence with N of the macroscopic properties of the virialized system, such as the particle energy distributions, the bound mass, and the density profile, is very slow and not clearly established, including for our largest simulations (with N ∼ 10 6 ). Our results illustrate the challenges of accurately simulating the first collapsing structures in standard-type cosmological models.

Abstract:Gaseous models have proven to be a computationally cheap and reliable tool to investigate the dynamical behaviour of globular clusters. But to compete with other approaches for modelling the evolution of star clusters various important effects have to be taken into account. These are for example the dynamical effects of a stellar mass spectrum, stellar evolution, a consistent treatment of the tidal field of the galaxy, or primordial binaries. Here we report on the effects of a mass spectrum and stellar evolution on the dynamical evolution of the cluster's post-collapse evolution (gravothermal oscillations) and show how only small changes in the mass loss rate can change the internal dynamics of the cluster.

Abstract:Effective models of gravitational collapse in loop quantum gravity for the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi spacetime predict that collapsing matter reaches a maximum finite density, bounces, and then expands outward. We show that in the marginally bound case, shell-crossing singularities commonly occur for inhomogeneous initial profiles of the dust energy density; this is the case in particular for all profiles that are continuous and of compact support, including configurations arbitrarily close to the Oppenheimer-Snyder model. Abstract:ABSTRACT Recent photometric observations of massive stars have identified a low-frequency power excess which appears as stochastic low-frequency variability in light-curve observations. We present the oscillation properties of high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of a $25\,\,{\rm{M}_\odot }$ star performed with the PPMstar code. The model star has a convective core mass of $\approx 12\,\,{\rm{M}_\odot }$ and approximately half of the envelope simulated. From this simulation, we extract light curves from several directions, average them over each hemisphere, and process them as if they were real photometric observations. We show how core convection excites waves with a similar frequency as the convective time-scale in addition to significant power across a forest of low and high angular degree l modes. We find that the coherence of these modes is relatively low as a result of their stochastic excitation by core convection, with lifetimes of the order of 10s of days. Thanks to the still significant power at higher l and this relatively low coherence, we find that integrating over a hemisphere produces a power spectrum that still contains measurable power up to the Brunt–Väisälä frequency. These power spectra extracted from the stable envelope are qualitatively similar to observations, with the same order of magnitude yet lower characteristic frequency. This work further shows the potential of long-duration, high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations for connecting asteroseismic observations to the structure and dynamics of core convection and the convective boundary.

Instability and warping in vertically oscillating accretion discs

Abstract:Many accretion discs have been found to be distorted: either warped due a misalignment in the system, or non-circular as a result of orbital eccentricity or tidal deformation by a binary companion. Warped, eccentric, and tidally distorted discs are not in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, and thus exhibit vertical oscillations in the direction perpendicular to the disc, a phenomenon that is absent in circular and flat discs. In extreme cases, this vertical motion is manifested as a vertical `bouncing' of the gas, potentially leading to shocks and heating, as observed in recent global numerical simulations. In this paper we isolate the mechanics of vertical disc oscillations by means of quasi-2D and fully 3D hydrodynamic local (shearing-box) models. To determine the numerical and physical dissipation mechanisms at work during an oscillation we start by investigating unforced oscillations, examining the effect of initial oscillation amplitude, as well as resolution, boundary conditions, and vertical box size on the dissipation and energetics of the oscillations. We then drive the oscillations by introducing a time-dependent gravitational potential. A key result is that even a purely vertically oscillating disc is (parametrically) unstable to developing inertial waves, as we confirm through a linear stability analysis. The most important of these has the character of a bending wave, whose radial wavelength depends on the frequency of the vertical oscillation. The nonlinear phase of the instability exhibits shocks, which dampen the oscillations, although energy can also flow from the bending wave back to the vertical oscillation.

Abstract:Abstract Evolution of rotating globular clusters with embedded black holes is presented. The interplay between velocity diffusion due to relaxation and black hole star accretion is followed together with cluster rotation, using 2-dimensional, in energy and z-component of angular momentum, Fokker Planck numerical methods. Gravogyro and gravothermal instabilities drive the system to a faster evolution leading to shorter collapse times and a faster cluster dissolution in the tidal field of a parent galaxy. Angular momentum transport and star accretion support the development of central rotation in relaxation time scales. Two-dimensional distribution (in the meridional plane) of kinematical and structural parameters (density, dispersions, rotation) are reproduced, with the aim to enable the use of set of models for comparison with observational data.
