Abstract:We show that the gluon distribution function for very large nuclei may be computed for small transverse momentum as correlation functions of an ultraviolet finite two dimensional Euclidean field theory. This computation is valid to all orders in the density of partons per unit area, but to lowest order in $\alpha_s$. The gluon distribution function is proportional to $1/x$, and the effect of the finite density of partons is to modify the dependence on transverse momentum for small transverse momentum.

Recent Developments of Small-$x$ Evolution for Quark and Gluon Helicity

Abstract:Helicity of quarks and gluons inside the proton at small Bjorken $x$ is one of the missing pieces of the proton spin puzzle, with limited experimental results due to various challenges. To address the problem, we derive under the framework of color glass condensate (CGC) effective theory a renormalization group equation in rapidity for the parton helicity distributions, which resums double-logarithmic factor, $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, with $\alpha_s$ being the strong coupling constant. With running coupling, the equation produces results at Bjorken $x\leq 0.1$ that are consistent with the world polarized scattering data. There is an evidence for a significant parton helicity contribution from the small-$x$ region. However, the helicity estimate still contains a large uncertainty that will dramatically reduce with the upcoming measurements from the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Ongoing attempts to reduce the uncertainty of our helicity prediction in the medium term will also be discussed.

Abstract:The current status of global QCD analysis of parton distribution functions of the nucleon is reviewed. Recent progress made in determining various features of the parton structure of the nucleon, as well as outstanding open questions are discussed. These include: the small-$x$ and large-$x$ behavior of the partons, particularly the gluon; the differentiation of $u$ and $d$ quarks; the strangeness sea ($s+\bar{s}$), the strangeness asymmetry ($s-\bar{s}$); and the heavy quark distributions $c$ and $b$. Important issues about assessing the uncertainties of parton distributions and their physical predictions are considered. These developments are all critical for the physics programs of HERA II, Tevatron Run II, RHIC, and LHC.
Helicity of Quarks and Gluons at Small Bjorken $x$

Abstract:The proton spin puzzle is a longstanding problem in high-energy nuclear physics: how the proton spin distributes among the spin and orbital angular momenta of the quarks and gluons inside. Two of the unresolved pieces of the puzzle are the contributions to quark and gluon spins from the region of small Bjorken $x$. This dissertation fills the gap by constructing the evolution of these quantities into the small-$x$ region using a modified dipole formalism. The dominant contributions to the evolution equations resum powers of $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, where $\alpha_s$ is the strong coupling constant. In general, these evolution equations do not close. However, once the large-$N_c$ or large-$N_c\& N_f$ limit is taken, they turn into a system of linear integral equations that can be solved iteratively. At large $N_c$, the evolution equations are shown to be consistent with the gluon sector of the polarized DGLAP evolution in the small-$x$ limit. We numerically solve the equations in the large-$N_c$ and large-$N_c\& N_f$ limits and obtain the exponential growth in $\ln(1/x)$ for $N_f \leq 5$, with the intercept decreasing with $N_f$. For the large-$N_c$ limit, we have $\alpha_h = 3.66$, which agrees up to the uncertainty with the earlier work by Bartels, Ermolaev and Ryskin. Furthermore, at $N_f=6$, the asymptotic form attains an oscillation in $\ln(1/x)$ on top of the exponential growth, with the period spanning several units of rapidity. Finally, parts of the single-logarithmic corrections to the small-$x$ helicity evolution is also derived, resumming powers of $\alpha_s\ln(1/x)$. There, the effects of the unpolarized small-$x$ evolution and the running coupling are also included for consistency. The complete single-logarithmic corrections can be derived based on the framework established here. Altogether, these equations will provide the most precise small-$x$ helicity evolution to date.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the heavy quark structure functions from the kt factorization scheme, using unifying the color dipole picture and double asymptotic scaling approaches at small x . The gluon distribution is obtained from the Golec-Biernat-Wüsthoff and Bartels, Golec-Biernat and Kowalski models. The main elements are based on the color dipole picture and the generalized double asymptotic scaling approach for usual parton distribution functions. The comparisons with the HERA data are made and predictions for the proposed LHeC and FCC-he colliders are also provided in a wide range of the transverse separation r . In particular, the ratio Rh=FLh/F2h,h=c,b,t is well described by the dipole models and is sensitive to the collider energies from HERA until FCC-he. We derive correlated bounds on the ratio F2c/F2 and F2b/F2 and compared them with the BGK and impact-parameter dependent saturation models. The uncertainties are due to the renormalization and factorization scales at large and low r values. An analysis of the gluon distribution with next-to-leading order splitting function in small-$x$

Abstract:An approximated solution for gluon distribution from DGLAP evolution equations with NLO splitting function in the small-$x$ limit is presented. We first obtain the simplified forms of LO and NLO splitting functions in the small-$x$ limit. With these approximated splitting functions, we obtain the analytical gluon distribution by using the Mellin transform. The free parameters in the boundary conditions are obtained by fitting the CJ15 gluon distribution data. We find that the asymptotic behavior of gluon distribution are consistent with the CJ15 data, however, the NLO results with the consideration of ``ladder'' structure of gluon emission are slightly better than those from LO. These results indicate that the corrections from NLO is significant and is necessary for a better description of the behavior of the gluon distribution in small-$x$ region. In addition, we investigate the DGLAP evolution of the proton structure function by using the analytical solution of the gluon distribution. The differential structure function shows that our results have a similar tendency with CJ15 at small-$x$.

Physical-Continuum Limit of the Nucleon Gluon Parton Distribution from Lattice QCD

Abstract:We present the key results from the first study of the $x$-dependent nucleon gluon distribution from lattice QCD extrapolated to the physical-continuum limit. We use ensembles with $2+1+1$ flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) generated by the MILC Collaboration with clover fermions for the valence action on three different lattice spacings and three different pion masses. We took up to $O(10^6)$ measurements of two-point correlators, obtaining good signal at boost momenta up to 3~GeV. We extrapolated the reduced pseudo-ITD matrix elements to the physical-continuum limit before extracting $xg(x)/\langle x \rangle_g$. Then using the gluon momentum fraction $\langle x \rangle_g$ calculated on the same configurations, we determine the unpolarized nucleon gluon PDF $xg(x)$ and compare results with other lattice and selected global fits.

Abstract:The behavior of the charm and bottom structure functions ($F_{k}^{i}(x,Q^{2})$, i=c,b; k=2,L) at small-$x$ is considered with respect to the hard-Pomeron and saturation models. Having checked that this behavior predicate the heavy flavor reduced cross sections concerning the unshadowed and shadowed corrections. We will show that the effective exponents for the unshadowed and saturation corrections are independent of $x$ and $Q^{2}$, and also the effective coefficients are dependent to $\ln{Q^{2}}$ compared to Donnachie-Landshoff (DL) and color dipole (CD) models.

Abstract:Abstract. An up-to-date global QCD analysis of high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron interactions is performed to better determine the gluon and quark parton distributions in the nucleon. Improved experimental data on inclusive jet production, in conjunction with precise deep inelastic scattering data, place good constraints on the gluon over a wide range of x; while new data on asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes contribute to better determine the d/u ratio. Comparisons with results of other recent global analyses are made, and the differences are described. Open issues and the general problem of determining the uncertainties of parton distributions are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we made a statistical approach on the thermodynamic structure of the nucleon and its quark distributions. We assume that the nucleon is a thermodynamic system of quarks and gluons. After we derived the quark density of states from the Dirac Equation, we calculated each quark's chemical potential, associating it with the quark's spin distribution. By using the sum rule of the longitudinal momentum, we obtain a function showing the relation between the temperature, radius and mass of the nucleon. The nucleon's radius is determined by the total energy minimal principle, and thus the temperature is also known. Finally, we deduced the quark distribution functions near x=1, and the results are in agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:An experimental and theoretical perspective is provided on the behavior of unpolarized distribution functions for the nucleon and pion on the valence-quark domain, namely, Bjorken x greater than or similar to 0.4. This domain is a key to much of hadron physics; e. g., a hadron is defined by its flavor content and that is a valence-quark property. Furthermore, its accurate parametrization is crucial to the provision of reliable input for large collider experiments. The focus is on experimental extractions of distribution functions via electron and muon inelastic scattering, and from Drell-Yan interactions; and on theoretical treatments that emphasize an explanation of the distribution functions, providing an overview of major contemporary approaches and issues. Valence-quark physics is a compelling subject, which probes at the heart of our understanding of the standard model. There are numerous outstanding and unresolved challenges, which experiment and theory must confront. In connection with experiment, an explanation that an upgraded Jefferson Laboratory facility is well suited to provide new data on the nucleon is provided, while a future electron-ion collider could provide essential new data for the mesons. There is also great potential in using Drell-Yan interactions, at FNAL, CERN, J-PARC, and GSI, to push into the large-x domain for both mesons and nucleons. Furthermore, it is argued that explanation, in contrast to modeling and parametrization, requires a widespread acceptance of the need to adapt theory: to the lessons learnt already from the methods of nonperturbative quantum-field theory and a fuller exploitation of those methods.
Light Cone Dynamics and EMC Effects in the Extraction of F_{2n} at Large Bjorken x

Abstract:We discuss theoretical issues related to the extraction of deep inelastic~(DIS) structure function of neutron from inclusive DIS scattering off the deuteron at large Bjorken x. Theoretical justification is given to the consideration of only $pn$ component of the deuteron wave function and consistency with both the baryonic number and light-cone momentum conservation sum rules. Next we discuss the EMC type effects and argue that in all cases relevant to the nuclear DIS reactions at large x the main issue is the medium modification of the properties of bound nucleon rather than the non-nucleonic components like pions. We give brief description of the color screening model of EMC and within this model we estimate uncertainties in the extraction of the neutron DIS structure function at large x. We emphasize also that these uncertainties are rather "model independent" since any theoretical framework accounting for the medium modification is proportional to the magnitude of the virtuality of bound nucleon which increases with an increase of x.

Abstract:The basic approximations leading to non-relativistic and relativistic nuclear y and x scaling are recalled. The general and systematic features of y-scaling structure functions are pointed out, and a recently proposed novel approach to y-scaling, based on a global scaling variable, y_G, which incorporates the effect of the momentum dependence of the nucleon removal energy, and therefore allows the establishment of a direct link between scaling functions and momentum distributions, is illustrated and applied to the analysis of a large body of data. The phenomenon of nuclear x-scaling, based on a proper analysis of nuclear quasi-elastic data in terms of the Bjorken scaling variable x_B, is shown to occur at high values of the four-momentum transfer Q^2; the usefulness of nuclear x scaling is pointed out.

Abstract:We revisit the problem of small Bjorken-$x$ evolution of the gluon and flavor-singlet quark helicity distributions in the shock wave ($s$-channel) formalism. Earlier works on the subject in the same framework resulted in an evolution equation for the gluon field-strength $F^{12}$ and quark "axial current" ${\bar\psi}\gamma^+\gamma^5\psi$ operators (sandwiched between the appropriate light-cone Wilson lines) in the double-logarithmic approximation (DLA: summing powers of $\alpha_s\,\ln^2(1/x)$ with $\alpha_s$ the strong coupling constant). In this work, we observe that an important mixing of the above operators with another gluon operator, $\overleftarrow{D}^i\,{D}^i$, also sandwiched between the light-cone Wilson lines (with the repeated index $i=1,2$ summed over), was missing in the previous works. This operator has the physical meaning of the sub-eikonal (covariant) phase: its contribution to helicity evolution is shown to be proportional to another sub-eikonal operator, $D^i-\overleftarrow{D}^i$, which is related to the Jaffe-Manohar polarized gluon distribution. In this work we include this operator into small-$x$ helicity evolution, and construct a novel evolution mixing all three operators ($D^i-\overleftarrow{D}^i$, $F^{12}$, and ${\bar\psi}\gamma^+\gamma^5\psi$), generalizing the previous results. We also construct closed DLA evolution equations in the large-$N_c$ and large-$N_c\& N_f$ limits, with $N_c$ and $N_f$ the numbers of quark colors and flavors, respectively. Solving the large-$N_c$ equations numerically we obtain the following small-$x$ asymptotics of the quark and gluon helicity distributions $\Delta \Sigma$ and $\Delta G$, along with the $g_1$ structure function, \[\Delta\Sigma(x,Q^2)\sim\Delta G(x,Q^2)\sim g_1(x,Q^2)\sim\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)^{3.66\,\sqrt{\frac{\alpha_s\,N_c}{2\pi}}},\] in complete agreement with the earlier work by Bartels, Ermolaev and Ryskin.

Bjorken variable and scale dependence of quark transport coefficient in semi-inclusive lepton-production of hadron off nuclei

Abstract:Nuclear modification of hadron production in deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering can be applied to study the parton propagation mechanism in cold nuclear matter. By means of the analytic parameterization of quenching weight based on BDMPS formalism with the target nuclear geometry effect, the leading-order computations for hadron multiplicity ratios are performed with comparison to the HERMES charged pions production data on the quarks hadronization occurring outside the nucleus. The relation is discovered between quark transport coefficient and the measurable kinematic variables in deep inelastic scattering. Four models are proposed on the quark transport coefficient. The constant model, the power-law model and the double power-law model can be ruled out because of the experimental fact that the transverse momentum broadening increases as a function of the photon virtuality $Q^2$. The quark transport coefficient is determined as a function of the Bjorken variable $x$ and scale $Q^2$. The trend of quark transport coefficient in respect of Bjorken variable $x$ and scale $Q^2$ is qualitatively in partial agreement with HERMES experimental data on transverse momentum broadening. It is hoped that our effort is conducive to understanding of jet quenching phenomenon in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:We revisit the problem of the small Bjorken- x asymptotics of the quark and gluon orbital angular momentum (OAM) distributions in the proton utilizing the revised small- x helicity evolution derived recently in [1]. We relate the quark and gluon OAM distributions at small x to the polarized dipole amplitudes and their (first) impact-parameter moments. To obtain the OAM distributions, we derive novel small- x evolution equations for the impact-parameter moments of the polarized dipole amplitudes in the double-logarithmic approximation (summing powers of α s ln 2 (1/ x ) with α s the strong coupling constant). We solve these evolution equations numerically and extract the leading large- N c , small- x asymptotics of the quark and gluon OAM distributions, which we determine to be

The Proton Gluon Distribution from the Color Dipole Picture

Abstract:Employing the representation of the experimental data on deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) in the color-dipole picture (CDP), we determine the gluon distribution of the proton at small Bjorken $x$. At sufficiently large momentum transfer, $Q^2$, the extracted gluon distribution fulfills the standard evolution equation for the proton structure function. For low values of $Q^2$, e.g. for $Q^2 = 1.9 {\rm GeV}^2$, the evolution equation for the proton structure function is violated. The standard procedure of adopting a low-$Q^2$ starting scale for the extraction of the gluon density is questionable and requires further investigations.
