Abstract:We apply the monodromy method for the calculation of the functional determinant of a special second order differential operator $F=-d^2/d\tau^2+{\ddot g}/g$, $\ddot g= d^2g/d\tau^2$, subject to periodic boundary conditions with a periodic zero mode $g=g(\tau)$. This operator arises in applications of the early Universe theory and, in particular, determines the one-loop statistical sum for the microcanonical ensemble in cosmology generated by a conformal field theory (CFT). This ensemble realizes the concept of cosmological initial conditions by generalizing the notion of the no-boundary wavefunction of the Universe to the level of a special quasi-thermal state which is dominated by instantons with an oscillating scale factor of their Euclidean Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric. These oscillations result in the multi-node nature of the zero mode $g(\tau)$ of $F$, which is gauged out from its reduced functional determinant by the method of the Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing procedure. The calculation is done for a general case of multiple nodes (roots) within the period range of the Euclidean time $\tau$, thus generalizing the previously known result for the single-node case of one oscillation of the cosmological scale factor. The functional determinant of $F$ expresses in terms of the monodromy of its basis function, which is obtained in quadratures as a sum of contributions of time segments connecting neighboring pairs of the zero mode roots within the period range.

Abstract:Distinct quantum vacua of topologically ordered states can be tunneled into each other via extended operators. The possible applications include condensed matter and quantum cosmology. We present a straightforward approach to calculate the partition function on various manifolds and ground state degeneracy (GSD), mainly based on continuum/cochain topological quantum field theories (TQFTs), in any dimension. This information can be related to the counting of extended operators of bosonic/fermionic TQFTs. On the lattice scale, anyonic particles/strings live at the ends of line/surface operators. Certain systems in different dimensions are related to each other through dimensional reduction schemes, analogous to (de) categorification. Examples include spin TQFTs derived from gauging the interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological states (with fermion parity Z(2)(f)) of symmetry groups Z(4)xZ(2) and (Z(4))(2) in 3+1D, also Z(2) and (Z(2))(2) in 2+1D. Gauging the last three cases begets non-Abelian spin TQFTs (fermionic topological order). We consider situations where a TQFT lives on (1) a closed spacetime or (2) a spacetime with a boundary, such that the bulk and boundary are fully gapped and short- or long-range entangled (SRE/LRE). Anyonic excitations can be deconfined on the boundary. We introduce newexotic topological interfaces on which neither particle nor string excitations alone condense, but only fuzzy-composite objects of extended operators can end (e.g., a string-like composite object formed by a set of particles can end on a special 2 1D boundary of 3+1D bulk). We explore the relations between group extension constructions and partially breaking constructions (e.g., 0-form/higher-form/"composite" breaking) of topological boundaries, after gauging. We comment on the implications of entanglement entropy for some such LRE systems.
Solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation on manifolds with variable geometry including dimensional reduction

Abstract:We develop the recent proposal to use dimensional reduction from the four-dimensional space-time D=(1+3) to the variant with a smaller number of space dimensions D=(1+d), d < 3, at sufficiently small distances to construct a renormalizable quantum field theory. We study the Klein-Gordon equation on a few toy examples ("educational toys") of a space-time with variable special geometry, including a transition to a dimensional reduction. The examples considered contain a combination of two regions with a simple geometry (two-dimensional cylindrical surfaces with different radii) connected by a transition region. The new technique of transforming the study of solutions of the Klein-Gordon problem on a space with variable geometry into solution of a one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger-type equation with potential generated by this variation is useful. We draw the following conclusions: (1) The signal related to the degree of freedom specific to the higher-dimensional part does not penetrate into the smaller-dimensional part because of an inertial force inevitably arising in the transition region (this is the centrifugal force in our models). (2) The specific spectrum of scalar excitations resembles the spectrum of the real particles; it reflects the geometry of the transition region and represents its "fingerprints". (3) The parity violation due to the asymmetric character of the construction of our models could be related to violation of the CP symmetry.

Notes on peculiarities of Schwinger--DeWitt technique: one-loop double poles, total-derivative terms and determinant anomalies

Abstract:We discuss peculiarities of the Schwinger--DeWitt technique for quantum effective action, associated with the origin of dimensionally regularized double-pole divergences of the one-loop functional determinant for massive Proca model in a curved spacetime. These divergences have the form of the total-derivative term generated by integration by parts in the functional trace of the heat kernel for the Proca vector field operator. Because of the nonminimal structure of second-order derivatives in this operator, its vector field heat kernel has a nontrivial form, involving the convolution of the scalar d'Alembertian Green's function with its heat kernel. Moreover, its asymptotic expansion is very different from the universal predictions of Gilkey-Seeley heat kernel theory because the Proca operator violates one of the basic assumptions of this theory -- the nondegeneracy of the principal symbol of an elliptic operator. This modification of the asymptotic expansion explains the origin of double-pole total-derivative terms. Another hypostasis of such terms is in the problem of multiplicative determinant anomalies -- lack of factorization of the functional determinant of a product of differential operators into the product of their individual determinants. We demonstrate that this anomaly should have the form of total-derivative terms and check this statement by calculating divergent parts of functional determinants for products of minimal and nonminimal second-order differential operators in curved spacetime.

On the finite basis topologies for multi-loop high-multiplicity Feynman integrals

Abstract:In this work, we systematically analyse Feynman integrals in the `t Hooft-Veltman scheme. We write an explicit reduction resulting from partial fractioning the high-multiplicity integrands to a finite basis of topologies at any given loop order. We find all of these finite basis topologies at two loops in four external dimensions. Their maximal cut and the leading singularity are expressed in terms of the Gram determinant and Baikov polynomial. By performing an Integration-By-Parts reduction without any cut constraint on a numerical probe for one of these topologies, we show that the computational complexity drops significantly compared to the Conventional Dimensional Regularization scheme. Formally, our work implies an upper bound on the rigidity of special functions appearing in the iterated integral solutions at each loop order in perturbative Quantum Field Theory. Phenomenologically, the integrand-level reduction we present will substantially simplify the task of providing high-precision predictions for future high-multiplicity collider observables.

Abstract:A bstract A remarkable result at the intersection of number theory and group theory states that the order of a finite group G (denoted |G| ) is divisible by the dimension d R of any irreducible complex representation of G . We show that the integer ratios $$ {\left|G\right|}^2/{d}_R^2 $$ G 2 / d R 2 are combinatorially constructible using finite algorithms which take as input the amplitudes of combinatoric topological strings ( G -CTST) of finite groups based on 2D Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories ( G -TQFT2). The ratios are also shown to be eigenvalues of handle creation operators in G -TQFT2/ G -CTST. These strings have recently been discussed as toy models of wormholes and baby universes by Marolf and Maxfield, and Gardiner and Megas. Boundary amplitudes of the G -TQFT2/ G -CTST provide algorithms for combinatoric constructions of normalized characters. Stringy S-duality for closed G -CTST gives a dual expansion generated by disconnected entangled surfaces. There are universal relations between G -TQFT2 amplitudes due to the finiteness of the number K of conjugacy classes. These relations can be labelled by Young diagrams and are captured by null states in an inner product constructed by coupling the G -TQFT2 to a universal TQFT2 based on symmetric group algebras. We discuss the scenario of a 3D holographic dual for this coupled theory and the implications of the scenario for the factorization puzzle of 2D/3D holography raised by wormholes in 3D.

Abstract:The topological Rényi and entanglement entropies depend on the bipartition of the manifold and the choice of the ground states. However, these entanglement quantities remain invariant under a coordinate transformation when the bipartition also undergoes the identical transformation. In topological quantum field theories (TQFTs), these coordinate transformations reduce to representations of the mapping class group on the manifold of the Hilbert space. We employ this invariant property of the Rényi and entanglement entropies under coordinate transformations for TQFTs in (2 + 1) dimensions on a torus with various bipartitions. By utilizing the replica trick and the surgery method to compute the topological Rényi and entanglement entropies, the invariant property results in Verlinde-like formulas. Furthermore, for the bipartition with interfaces as two non-intersecting torus knots, an SL(2 , Z) transformation can untwist the torus knots, leading to a simple bipartition with an effective ground state. This invariant property allows us to demonstrate that the topological entanglement entropy has a lower bound −2 ln D , where D is the total quantum dimensions of the system.

Abstract:We consider topological groupoids in finite and also in a compact settings. In the initial sections, we introduce definitions of typical observables and we studied them in the context of statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. We exhibit explicit examples and one of them will be the so-called quantum ratchet. This is related to Schwinger's algebra of selective measurements. Here we consider $\mathcal{G}$-kernels, transverse functions, modular functions, and quasi-invariant measures for Haar systems. Later we present our main result which is a version of Tannaka's theorem for Hausdorff compact groupoids - extending the original proof of T. Tannaka.

Abstract:Bordered and framed Toeplitz/Hankel determinants have the same structure as Toeplitz/Hankel determinants except in small number of matrix rows and/or columns. We review these structured determinants and their connections to orthogonal polynomials, collecting well-known and perhaps less well-known results. We present some applications for these structured determinants to ensembles of non-intersecting paths and the six-vertex model, with an eye towards asymptotic analysis. We also prove some asymptotic formulae for the probability of non-intersection for an ensemble of continuous time random walks for certain choices of starting and ending points as the number of random walkers tends to infinity.

Geometries in perturbative quantum field theory

Abstract:In perturbative quantum field theory one encounters certain, very specific geometries over the integers. These perturbative quantum geometries determine the number contents of the amplitude considered. In the article `Modular forms in quantum field theory' F. Brown and the author report on a first list of perturbative quantum geometries using the $c_2$-invariant in $\phi^4$ theory. A main tool was denominator reduction which allowed the authors to examine graphs up to loop order (first Betti number) 10. We introduce an improved quadratic denominator reduction which makes it possible to extend the previous results to loop order 11 (and partially orders 12 and 13). For comparison, also non-$\phi^4$ graphs are investigated. Here, we extend the results from loop order 9 to 10. The new database of 4801 unique $c_2$-invariants (previously 157) -- while being consistent with all major $c_2$-conjectures -- leads to a more refined picture of perturbative quantum geometries. In the appendix, Friedrich Knop proves a Chevalley-Warning-Ax theorem for double covers of affine space.

Combinatorial decompositions for deformed or decorated classes of maps

Abstract:The perturbative expansion of tensorial field theories in Feynman graphs can be interpreted as weighted generating series of some piecewise linear varieties. This simple fact establishes a link between two a priori distinct fields: the combinatorics of discrete manifolds on one hand and tensorial field theories on the other hand. In this thesis, we study different aspects revolving around this connection between combinatorics and field theory. First, we consider constellations model, which generalize maps and their algebraic properties. This makes them suited to probe the b-deformation, a deformation of the algebra of symmetric functions. We will study the constraints satisfied by the generating series of cubical b-deformed constellations. Second, we analyze the double scaling limit of particular tensor models of order 3. For tensor of order greater than two, the nature of the 1/N-expansion is qualitatively different from the matrix case of order 2. In particular, only the leading order graphs are fully characterized. Despite this fact, it is possible to identify graphs of subleading orders contributing to the double scaling limit by implementing the scheme decomposition for Feynman graphs of these theories. An analysis of the singularity of the schemes then allows us to give a complete characterization of the graphs contributing to the double scaling limit. Finally, we investigate a particular link between a tensor and a vector field theory which both admit a melonic limit. Namely, we will show that we can obtain the vectorial Amit-Roginski model by considering perturbations around a classical solution of the Boulatov model, a tensorial theory. We give sufficient conditions on the classical solution so that the effective action for the perturbation around this solution takes the form of the Amit-Roginski action.

Abstract:The recent developments in the study of topological multi-boundary entanglement in the context of 3d Chern-Simons theory (with gauge group $G$ and level $k$) suggest a strong interplay between entanglement measures and number theory. The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we conjecture that the 'sum of the negative powers of the quantum dimensions of all integrable highest weight representations at level $k$' is an integer multiple of the Witten zeta function of $G$ when $k \to \infty$. This provides an alternative way to compute these zeta functions, and we present some examples. Next, we use this conjecture to investigate number-theoretic properties of the Rényi entropies of the quantum state associated with the $S^3$ complement of torus links of type $T_{p,p}$. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit of $k \to \infty$, these entropies converge to a finite value. This finite value can be written in terms of the Witten zeta functions of the group $G$ evaluated at positive even integers.

Abstract:We define the combinatorial Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and establish a gluing formula for determinants of discrete Laplacians using a combinatorial Gaussian quantum field theory. In case of a diagonal inner product on cochains we provide an explicit local expression for the discrete Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. We relate the gluing formula to the corresponding Mayer–Vietoris formula by Burghelea, Friedlander and Kappeler for zeta-determinants of analytic Laplacians, using the approximation theory of Dodziuk. Our argument motivates existence of gluing formulas as a consequence of a gluing principle on the discrete level.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the relationship between noninvertible topological operators, one-form symmetries, and decomposition of two-dimensional quantum field theories, focusing on two-dimensional orbifolds with and without discrete torsion. As one component of our analysis, we study the ring of dimension-zero operators in two-dimensional theories exhibiting decomposition. From a commutative algebra perspective, the rings are naturally associated to a finite number of points, one point for each universe in the decomposition. Each universe is canonically associated to a representation, which defines a projector, an idempotent in the ring of dimension-zero operators. We discuss how bulk Wilson lines act as defects bridging universes, and how Wilson lines on boundaries of two-dimensional theories decompose, and compute actions of projectors. We discuss one-form symmetries of the rings, and related properties. We also give general formulas for projection operators, which previously were computed on a case-by-case basis. Finally, we propose a characterization of noninvertible higher-form symmetries in this context in terms of representations. In that characterization, non-isomorphic universes appearing in decomposition are associated with noninvertible one-form symmetries.

Abstract:In this thesis, we take a journey through two different but not dissimilar stories with an underlying theme of combinatorics emerging from scattering amplitudes in quantum field theories. The first part tells the tale of the $c_2$-invariant, an arithmetic invariant related to the Feynman integral in $\phi^4$-theory, which studies the zeros of the Kirchoff polynomial and related graph polynomials. Through reformulating the $c_2$-invariant as a purely combinatorial problem, we show how enumerating certain edge bipartitions through fixed-point free involutions can complete a special case of the long sought after $c_2$ completion conjecture. The second part tells the tale of the positive Grassmannian and a combinatorial T-duality map on its cells, as related to scattering amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory. In particular, T-duality is a bridge between triangulations of the hypersimplex and triangulations of the amplituhedron, two objects that appear as images of the positive Grassmannian. We give an algorithm for viewing T-duality as a map on Le diagrams and characterize a nice structure to the Le diagrams (which can then be used in lieu of the algorithm). Through this Le diagram perspective on T-duality, we show how the dimensional relationship between the positroid cells on either side of the map can be directly explained.

From quantum curves to topological string partition functions II

Abstract:We propose a geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions associated to the local Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds used in the geometric engineering of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. A quantisation of these CY manifolds defines differential operators called quantum curves. The partition functions are extracted from the isomonodromic tau-functions associated to the quantum curves by expansions of generalised theta series type. It turns out that the partition functions are in one-to-one correspondence with preferred coordinates on the moduli spaces of quantum curves defined using the Exact WKB method. The coordinates defined in this way jump across certain loci in the moduli space. The changes of normalisation of the tau-functions associated to these jumps define a natural line bundle playing a key role in the geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions proposed here.

From Feynman integrals to quantum algorithms: the Loop-Tree Duality connection

Abstract:In the context of high-energy particle physics, a reliable theory-experiment confrontation requires precise theoretical predictions. This translates into accessing higher-perturbative orders, and when we pursue this objective, we inevitably face the presence of complicated multi-loop Feynman integrals. There are serious bottlenecks to compute them with classical tools: the time to explore novel technologies has arrived. In this work, we study the implementation of quantum algorithms to optimize the integrands of scattering amplitudes. Our approach relies on the manifestly causal Loop-Tree Duality (LTD), which re-casts the loop integrand into phase-space integrals and avoids spurious non-physical singularities. Then, we codify this information in such a way that a quantum computer can understand the problem, and build Hamiltonians whose ground state are directly related to the causal representation. Promising results for generic families of multi-loop topologies are presented.

Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.
