Abstract:The evolution of single-particle strengths as the neutron-to-proton asymmetry changes informs us of the importance of short- and long-range correlations in nuclei and has therefore been extensively studied for the last two decades. Surprisingly, the strong asymmetry dependence of these strengths and their extreme values for highly-asymmetric nuclei inferred from knockout reaction measurements on a target nucleus are not consistent with what is extracted from electron-induced, transfer, and quasi-free reaction data, constituting a two-decade old puzzle. This work presents the first consistent analysis of one-nucleon transfer and one-nucleon knockout data, in which theoretical uncertainties associated with the nucleon-nucleus effective interactions considered in the reaction models are quantified using a Bayesian analysis. Our results demonstrate that, taking into account these uncertainties, the spectroscopic strengths of loosely-bound nucleons extracted from both probes agree with each other and, although there are still discrepancies for deeply-bound nucleons, the slope of the asymmetry dependence of the single-particle strengths inferred from transfer and knockout reactions are consistent within $1\sigma$. Both probes are consistent with a small asymmetry dependence of these strengths. The uncertainties obtained in this work represent a lower bound and are already significantly larger than the original estimates.

Spin Symmetry in the Anti-Nucleon Spectrum

Abstract:We discuss spin and pseudo-spin symmetry in the spectrum of single nucleons and single anti- nucleons in a nucleus. As an example we use relativistic mean field theory to investigate single anti-nucleon spectra. We find a very well developed spin symmetry in single anti-neutron and single anti-proton spectra. The dominant components of the wave functions of the spin doublet are almost identical. This spin symmetry in anti-particle spectra and the pseudo-spin symmetry in particle spectra have the same origin. However it turns out that the spin symmetry in anti-nucleon spectra is much better developed than the pseudo-spin symmetry in normal nuclear single particle spectra.
High-energy Behavior of the Nuclear Symmetry Potential in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

Abstract:Using the relativistic impulse approximation with empirical NN scattering amplitude and the nuclear scalar and vector densities from the relativistic mean-field theory, we evaluate the Dirac optical potential for neutrons and protons in asymmetric nuclear matter. From the resulting Schrodinger-equivalent potential, the high-energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential is studied. We find that the symmetry potential at fixed baryon density is essentially constant once the nucleon kinetic energy is greater than about 500 MeV. Moreover, for such a high-energy nucleon, the symmetry potential is slightly negative below a baryon density of about rho = 0.22 fm(-3) and then increases almost linearly to positive values at high densities. Our results thus provide an important constraint on the energy and density dependence of nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter.

Abstract:The Gottfried sum-rule violation reported by the New Muon Collaboration was interpreted as an indication for a flavor asymmetry of the sea quark in the nucleon. We investigate the alternative possibility that isospin symmetry between the proton and the neutron is breaking. We examine systematically the consequences of this possibility for several processes, namely, neutrino deep inelastic scattering, the charged pion Drell-Yan process, the proton Drell-Yan process, and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, and conclude that a decision between the two alternative explanations is possible.
Conformal symmetry and light flavor baryon spectra

Abstract:The degeneracy among parity pairs systematically observed in the N and Delta spectra is interpreted to hint on a possible conformal symmetry realization in the light flavor baryon sector in line with AdS_5/CFT_4. The case is made by showing that all the observed N and Delta resonances with masses below 2500 MeV distribute fairly well each over the first levels of a unitary representation of the conformal group, a representation that covers the spectrum of a quark-diquark system, placed directly on the AdS_5 cone, conformally compactified to R^1*S^3. The free geodesic motion on the S^3 manifold is described by means of the scalar conformal equation there, which is of the Klein-Gordon type. The equation is then gauged by the "curved" Coulomb potential that has the form of a cotangent function. Conformal symmetry is not exact, this because the gauge potential slightly modifies the conformal centrifugal barrier of the free geodesic motion. Thanks to this, the degeneracy between P11-S11 pairs from same level is relaxed, while the remaining states belonging to same level remain practically degenerate. The model describes the correct mass ordering in the P11-S11 pairs through the nucleon spectrum as a combined effect of the above conformal symmetry breaking, on the one side, and a parity change of the diquark from a scalar at low masses, to a pseudoscalar at higher masses, on the other. The quality of the wave functions is illustrated by calculations of realistic mean-square charge radii and electric charge form-factors on the examples of the proton, and the protonic P11(1440), and S11(1535) resonances. The scheme also allows for a prediction of the dressing function of an effective instantaneous gluon propagator from the Fourier transform of the gauge potential. We find a dressing function that is finite in the infrared and tends to zero at infinity.

Broad Sub-Continuum Resonances and the Case for Finite-Energy Sum-Rules

Abstract:There is a need to go beyond the narrow resonance approximation for QCD sum-rule channels which are likely to exhibit sensitivity to broad resonance structures. We first discuss how the first two Laplace sum rules are altered when one goes beyond the narrow resonance approximation to include possible subcontinuum resonances with nonzero widths. We then show that the corresponding first two finite energy sum rules are insensitive to the widths of such resonances, provided their peaks are symmetric and entirely below the continuum threshold. We also discuss the reduced sensitivity of the first two finite energy sum rules to higher dimensional condensates, and show these sum rules to be insensitive to dimension > 6 condensates containing at least one q-bar q pair. We extract the direct single-instanton contribution to the F_1 sum rule for the longitudinal component of the axial-vector correlation function from the known single-instanton contribution to the lowest Laplace sum rule for the pseudoscalar channel. Finally, we demonstrate how inclusion of this instanton contribution to the finite-energy sum rule leads to both a lighter quark mass and to more phenomenologically reasonable higher-mass resonance contributions within the pseudoscalar channel.
Delineating Effects of Tensor Force on the Density Dependence of Nuclear Symmetry Energy

Abstract:In this talk, we report results of our recent studies to delineate effects of the tensor force on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy within phenomenological models. The tensor force active in the isosinglet neutron roton interaction channel leads to appreciable depletion/population of nucleons below/above the Fermi surface in the single-nucleon momentum distribution in cold symmetric nuclear matter (SNM). We found that as a consequence of the high momentum tail in SNM the kinetic part of the symmetry energy Ekinsym(ρ) is significantly below the well-known Fermi gas model prediction of approximately 125(ρ/ρ0)2/3. With about 15% nucleons in the high momentum tail as indicated by the recent experiments at J-Lab by the CLAS Collaboration, the Ekinsym(ρ) is negligibly small. It even becomes negative when more nucleons are in the high momentum tail in SNM. These features have recently been confirmed by three independent studies based on the state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear many-body theories. In addition, we also estimate the second-order tensor force contribution to the potential part of the symmetry energy. Implications of these findings in extracting information about nuclear symmetry energy from nuclear reactions are discussed briefly.
Symmetry Energy of Cold Nucleonic Matter Within a Relativistic Mean Field Model Encapsulating Effects of High Momentum Nucleons Induced by Short-Range Correlations

Abstract:It is well known that short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations (SRC) from the tensor components and/or the repulsive core of nuclear forces lead to a high-(low-) momentum tail (depletion) in the single-nucleon momentum distribution above (below) the nucleon Fermi surface in cold nucleonic matter. Significant progress was made recently in constraining the isospin-dependent parameters characterizing the SRC-modified single-nucleon momentum distribution in neutron-rich nucleonic matter using both experimental data and microscopic model calculations. Using the constrained single-nucleon momentum distribution in a nonlinear relativistic mean field (RMF) model, we study the equation of state (EOS) of asymmetric nucleonic matter (ANM), especially the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy E-sym(rho). First, as a test of the model, the average nucleon kinetic energy extracted recently from electron-nucleus scattering experiments using a neutron-proton dominance model is well reproduced by the RMF model incorporating effects of the SRC-induced high-momentum nucleons, while it is significantly under predicted by the RMF model using a step function for the single-nucleon momentum distribution as in free Fermi gas (FFG) models. Second, consistent with earlier findings within nonrelativistic models, the kinetic symmetry energy of quasinucleons is found to be E-sym(kin) (rho 0) = -16.94 +/- 13.66MeV which is dramatically different from the prediction of E-sym(kin) (rho 0) +/- 12.5 MeV by FFG models at nuclear matter saturation density rho 0 = 0.16 fm(-3). Third, comparing the RMF calculations with and without the high-momentum nucleons using two sets of model parameters both reproducing identically all empirical constraints on the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and the symmetry energy of ANM at rho 0, the SRC-modified single-nucleon momentum distribution is found to make the E-sym(rho) more concave around rho 0 by softening it significantly at both subsaturation and suprasaturation densities, leading to an isospin-dependent incompressibility of ANM in better agreement with existing experimental data. Fourth, the maximum mass of neutron stars is enhanced by the increased kinetic pressure from high-momentum nucleons at suprasaturation densities in SNM.
Relativistic Self-Energy Decomposition of Nuclear Symmetry Energy and Equation of State of Neutron Matter Within QCD Sum Rules

Abstract:Properties of the relativistic nucleon self-energy decomposition of the symmetry energy as well as the equation of state (EOS) of pure neutron matter (PNM) are explored systematically within the QCD sum rules (QCDSR). Our main conclusions are as follows: (1) The five self-energy decomposition terms of the symmetry energy according to the nucleon Lorentz structure are carefully studied, leading to the conclusion that the symmetry energy increases as the nucleon sigma term sigma(N) increases and the contributions to the symmetry energy due to the momentum dependence of the self-energies in symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) are very small compared with those from other decomposition terms. (2) A smaller strange quark mass is found to generate a larger symmetry energy, and this correlation is useful for understanding the origins of the uncertainties on the (nucleonic matter) symmetry energy from quark level. (3) The EOS of PNM at low densities can be effectively approximated by E-n(rho) approximate to E-n(FFG) (rho) + (M rho/2 <(q) over barq >(vac))[(1 - xi)(sigma(N)/2m(q)) - 5] which depends only on several physical quantities such as m(q), sigma(N) and <(q) over barq >(vac), and this formula already has predictive power and the results are found to be consistent with those from other celebrated microscopic many-body theories at low densities. (4) The higher order density terms in quark condensates are shown to be important to describe the empirical EOS of PNM in the density region around and above nuclear saturation density, and these higher order density terms are also found to hinder the appearance of chiral symmetry restoration in PNM at high densities. (5) The symmetry energy is shown to depend strongly on the five-dimensional condensate < g(s)q(dagger)sigma Gq >(rho, delta), providing a useful approach to explore the symmetry energy through knowledge on the condensates which can be extracted from hadronic physics. (6) The twist-4 four-quark condensates are shown to have significant effects on the EOS of both SNM and PNM but have minor effects on the symmetry energy, and combined with the analyses on the effects of the higher order density terms in the chiral condensates, three parameter sets of QCDSR are constructed and they are shown to be able to describe the EOS of PNM and the symmetry energy within a wide range of densities. Our results in the present work demonstrate that the QCDSR approach can provide a useful way to understand the properties of dense nucleonic matter from nonperturbative QCD vacuum.

Abstract:. The spin symmetry in antinucleon spectra of a nucleus is tested by investigating the relations between the Dirac wave functions of the spin doublets and examining these relations in realistic nuclei within the relativistic mean-field model. In addition to the fact that the dominant components of the Dirac spinors of the spin doublet are nearly identical to each other, there is a differential relation between the smaller components which is found to be almost exactly fulfilled.

Abstract:Four different neutrino mass sum-rules have been analyzed: these frequently arise in flavor symmetry models based on the groups A_4, S_4 or T', which are often constructed to generate tri-bimaximal mixing. In general, neutrino mass can be probed in three different ways, using beta decay, neutrino-less double beta decay and cosmology. The general relations between the corresponding three neutrino mass observables are well known. The sum-rules lead to relations between the observables that are different from the general case and therefore only certain regions in parameter space are allowed. Plots of the neutrino mass observables are given for the sum-rules, and analytical expressions for the observables are provided. The case of deviations from the exact sum-rules is also discussed, which can introduce new features. The sum-rules could be used to distinguish some of the many models in the literature, which all lead to the same neutrino oscillation results.

Abstract:We present a compact review of the status of QCD spectral sum rules until 2022. We emphasize the recent progresses for determining the QCD input parameters ($\alpha_s$, running quark masses, quark and gluon condensates) where their correlations have been taken into account. Some selected phenomenological uses of the sum rules in different channels (light and heavy quarks, gluonia/glueballs, hybrids and four-quark states) are briefly reviewed and commented. The estimate of the $1^{-+}$ light hybrid mass is revised which confirms the hybrid nature of the $\pi_1(1600)$ but not the $\pi_1(2050)$.

Abstract:The axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is used to derive mass formulas for neutral pseudoscalar mesons. Flavor symmetry breaking entails nonideal flavor content for these states. Adding that the eta(') is not a Goldstone mode, exact chiral-limit relations are developed from the identity. They connect the dressed-quark propagator to the topological susceptibility. It is confirmed that in the chiral limit the eta(') mass is proportional to the matrix element which connects this state to the vacuum via the topological susceptibility. The implications of the mass formulas are illustrated using an elementary dynamical model, which includes an Ansatz for that part of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel related to the non-Abelian anomaly. In addition to the current-quark masses, the model involves two parameters, one of which is a mass-scale. It is employed in an analysis of pseudoscalar- and vector-meson bound-states. While the effects of SU(N-f = 2) and SU(N-f = 3) flavor symmetry breaking are emphasized, the five-flavor spectra are described. Despite its simplicity, the model is elucidative and phenomenologically efficacious; e.g., it predicts eta-eta(') mixing angles of similar to -15(degrees) and pi(0)-eta angles of similar to 1(degrees).
Target normal single-spin asymmetry in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering in the 1/Nc expansion

Abstract:The target normal single-spin asymmetry in electron nucleon scattering is studied in the framework of the 1/Nc expansion of QCD, which allows for a rigorous description in the energy range that includes the Delta resonance and below the second baryon resonance region. The asymmetry is driven by the absorptive part of the two-photon exchange component of the scattering amplitude, being therefore the most unambiguous two-photon exchange effect. Such amplitude is shown to be described up to the next to leading order in the 1/Nc expansion only in terms of the charge and magnetic form factors of the nucleons, consequence of the approximate $SU(4)$ spin flavor symmetry valid in the large Nc limit for baryons. A discussion is provided of the 1/Nc expansion framework along with the results for the asymmetries in elastic, inelastic, and inclusive electron-nucleon scattering.

Abstract:Based on the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, it is shown that both the symmetry energy E-sym(rho) and its density slope L(rho) at normal density rho(0) are completely determined by the nucleon global optical potentials. The latter can be extracted directly from nucleon-nucleus scatterings, (p,n) charge-exchange reactions, and single-particle energy levels of bound states. Averaging all phenomenological isovector nucleon potentials constrained by world data available in the literature since 1969, the best estimates of E-sym(rho(0)) = 31.3MeV and L(rho(0)) = 52.7MeV are simultaneously obtained. Moreover, the corresponding neutron-proton effective mass splitting in neutron-rich matter of isospin asymmetry delta is estimated to be (m*(n) -m*(p))/m = 0.32 delta.
Extracting the Nuclear Symmetry Potential and Energy from Neutron–nucleus Scattering Data

Abstract:According to the Hugenholtz–Van Hove theorem, the symmetry energy and its density slope can be decomposed uniquely in terms of the single-nucleon potential in asymmetric nuclear matter which, at normal density, can be constrained by the nucleon optical model potential extracted from analyzing the nucleon–nucleus scattering data. To more accurately extract information on the symmetry energy and its density slope at normal density from neutron–nucleus scattering data, going beyond the well-known Lane potential, we include consistently the second-order terms in isospin asymmetry in both the optical model potential and the symmetry energy decomposition. We find that the strength of the second-order symmetry potential Usym,2 in asymmetric nuclear matter is significant compared to the first-order one Usym,1, especially at high nucleon momentum. While the Usym,1 at normal density decreases with nucleon momentum, the Usym,2 is found to have the opposite behavior. Moreover, we discuss effects of the Usym,1 and Usym,2 on determining the density dependence of the symmetry energy, and we find that the available neutron–nucleus scattering data favor a softer density dependence of the symmetry energy at normal density with a negligible contribution from the Usym,2.
Quark-antiquark Asymmetry of Helicity Distributions in the Nucleon Sea

Abstract:We study the helicity distributions of light flavor quark-antiquark (q (q) over bar) pairs in the nucleon sea. The valence quarks are handled by adopting the light-cone SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and the sea q (q) over bar pairs are treated from statistical consideration by introducing the helicity suppression factors l(q)(x) and (l) over bar (q)(x) to parametrize the helicity distributions of q-flavor sea quark and antiquark respectively, while Delta l(q)(x) = l(q)(x) - (l) over bar (q)(x) represents a combined effect of helicity contribution due to sea q (q) over bar pairs. From fitting the nucleon polarization asymmetries A(1)(N) in inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes and the single-spin asymmetries A(L)(W +/-) in Drell-Yan type processes, we find a significant asymmetry between the quark and antiquark helicity distributions of the nucleon sea. Therefore the quark-antiquark asymmetry of helicity distributions of nucleon sea q q (q) over bar pairs, i.e., Delta q(s)(x) not equal Delta(q) over bar (s)(x), plays an important role for a comprehensive understanding of the nucleon spin content.
Symmetry Energy Systematics and Its High Density Behavior

Abstract:We explore the systematics of the density dependence of nuclear matter symmetry energy in the ambit of microscopic calculations with various energy density functionals, and find that the symmetry energy from subsaturation density to supra-saturation density can be well determined by three characteristic parameters of the symmetry energy at saturation density ρ0, i.e., the magnitude Esym(ρ0), the density slope L and the density curvature Ksym. This finding opens a new window to constrain the supra-saturation density behavior of the symmetry energy from its (sub-)saturation density behavior. In particular, we obtain L = 46.7 ± 12.8 MeV and Ksym = −166.9 ± 168.3 MeV as well as Esym(2ρ0) ≈ 40.2 ± 12.8 MeV and L(2ρ0) ≈ 8.9±108.7 MeV based on the present knowledge of Esym(ρ0) = 32.5 ± 0.5 MeV, Esym(ρc) = 26.65±0.2 MeV and L(ρc) = 46.0±4.5 MeV at ρc = 0.11 fm−3 extracted from nuclear mass and the neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes. Our results indicate that the symmetry energy cannot be stiffer than a linear density dependence. In addition, we also discuss the quark matter symmetry energy since the deconfined quarks could be the right degree of freedom in dense matter at high baryon densities.
Isospin-dependent Properties of Asymmetric Nuclear Matter in Relativistic Mean Field Models

Abstract:Using various relativistic mean-field models, including nonlinear ones with meson field self-interactions, models with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings, and point-coupling models without meson fields, we have studied the isospin-dependent bulk and single-particle properties of asymmetric nuclear matter. In particular, we have determined the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy from these different relativistic mean-field models and compared the results with the constraints recently extracted from analyses of experimental data on isospin diffusion and isotopic scaling in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions as well as from measured isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonances in even-$A$ Sn isotopes. Among the 23 parameter sets in the relativistic mean-field model that are commonly used for nuclear structure studies, only a few are found to give symmetry energies that are consistent with the empirical constraints. We have also studied the nuclear symmetry potential and the isospin splitting of the nucleon effective mass in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that both the momentum dependence of the nuclear symmetry potential at fixed baryon density and the isospin splitting of the nucleon effective mass in neutron-rich nuclear matter depend not only on the nuclear interactions but also on the definition of the nucleon optical potential.
N ov 2 00 1 Asymmetry of strange sea in nucleons

Abstract:Based on the finite-temperature field theory, we evaluate the medium effects in nucleon which can induce an asymmetry between quarks and antiquarks of the strange sea. The short-distance effects determined by the weak interaction can give rise to δm ≡ ∆ms − ∆ms where ∆ms(s) is the medium-induced mass of strange quark by a few KeV at most, but the long-distance effects by strong interaction are sizable. Our numerical results show that there exists an obvious mass difference between strange and anti-strange quarks, as large as 10 − 100 MeV.
