Abstract:Real or virtual photons are excellent probes of nuclear structure, with a strong sensitivity to gluon distributions. Photonic reactions can be studied using ultra-peripheral collisions or at an electron-ion collider. Final states like dijets or open charm production are directly sensitive to the gluon distributions in nuclei. Exclusive reactions, like exclusive vector meson production or deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) go further, requiring at least two gluons. In the Good-Walker paradigm, coherent exclusive photoproduction is sensitive to the average nuclear configuration (including gluonic hot spots), and the Fourier transform of the differential cross-section $d\sigma/dt$ gives the transverse distribution of partonic targets in a nucleus. The incoherent photoproduction cross-section is sensitive to partonic fluctuations, including gluonic hot spots. Some reactions, such as dijet production, involve multiple momentum scales, and thus may be able to probe the Wigner distribution of nuclear targets. Finally, incoherent photoproduction is sensitive to partonic fluctuations; an analysis of $J/\psi$ photoproduction on proton targets found that the data clearly preferred a fluctuating lumpy proton.

Abstract:We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized J/ψ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large Q2 . The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized J/ψ , and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. We identify kinematic regimes where light quark fragmentation dominates, allowing for the extraction of the S31[8] matrix element, as well as regimes where photon gluon fusion dominates, suggesting that the gluon TMD parton distribution function can be probed. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.074032 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Probing gluon GTMDs of the proton in deep inelastic diffractive dijet production at HERA

Abstract:We calculate several differential distributions for diffractive dijets production in ep→e′jet jetp in the perturbative QCD dipole approach using off diagonal unintegrated gluon distributions (generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions, GTMDs). Different models from the literature are used. We concentrate on the contribution from exclusive qq ̄ dijets. Results of our calculations are compared to H1 and ZEUS data, including specific experimental cuts in our calculations. In general, except for one GTMD, our results are below the HERA data. The considered mechanism is expected to gives a sizeable contribution to the ZEUS data, while it is negligible in the kinematics of the H1 measurement. This is in contrast to recent results from the literature where the normalization was adjusted to some selected distributions of the H1 collaboration and no agreement with other observables was checked. The ZEUS data provide stricter limitations on the GTMDs than the H1 data. We conclude, based on comparison to different observables, that the calculated cross sections are only a small fraction of the measured ones which contain probably also processes with pomeron remnant. Alternatively one could try to explain the experimental data by inclusion of qq ̄g component of the photon wave function. We present also azimuthal correlations between the sum and the difference of dijet transverse momenta. Exploring the three-dimensional momentum distribution of longitudinally polarized quarks in the proton

Abstract:By analyzing experimental data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized targets, we extract the transverse momentum dependence of the quark helicity distribution, i.e., the difference between the three-dimensional motion of quarks with polarization parallel or antiparallel to the longitudinal polarization of the parent hadron. We perform the analysis at next-to-leading (NLL) and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLL) perturbative accuracy. The quality of the fit is very good for both cases, reaching a $\chi^2$ per number of data points equal to $1.11$ and $1.09$, respectively. Although the limited number of data points leads to significant uncertainties, the data are consistent with an interpretation in which the helicity distribution is narrower in transverse momentum than the unpolarized distribution.

Probing gluon saturation and nuclear structure in photon-nucleus collisions

Abstract:We calculate exclusive vector meson photoproduction within the Color Glass Condensate framework in high-energy photon-nucleus scattering probed experimentally in ultra peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. When the free parameters are constrained by the $\gamma+p$ data from HERA, we predict significant nuclear suppression for both the coherent and incoherent photoproduction cross section in the TeV range. Our results indicate that the LHC data prefers even stronger saturation effects at the highest collision energies. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the linear polarization of photons in ulra peripheral collisions generates azimuthal modulations in the decay products of the exclusively produced vector meson. We show how these measurements can probe details of the nuclear geometry, specifically the deformed structure of the uranium nuclei.

Abstract:I review the current status of the determination of helicity-dependent, or polarized, parton distribution functions from a comprehensive analysis of experimental data in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. I illustrate the latest achievements driven by new measurements in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, namely the first evidence of a sizable polarized light sea quark asymmetry and of a positive polarized gluon distribution in the proton. I discuss which are the open issues in the determination of polarized distributions, and how these may be addressed in the future by ongoing, planned and proposed experimental programs.
Coherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction and polarization in peripheral Pb$-$Pb collisions

Abstract:Photonuclear reactions are induced by the strong electromagnetic field generated by ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. These processes have been extensively studied in ultraperipheral collisions, where the impact parameter is larger than twice the nuclear radius. In recent years, the observation of coherent $J/\psi$ photoproduction at very low transverse momentum has been claimed in nucleus$-$nucleus (A$-$A) collisions with nuclear overlap, based on the measurement of an excess in the $J/\psi$ yield with respect to hadroproduction expectations. Such quarkonium measurements can help to constrain the nuclear gluon distribution at low Bjorken-$x$ and high energy. The photoproduced quarkonium is expected to preserve the polarization of the incoming photon due to the $s$-channel helicity conservation. In this contribution, we report on the new preliminary measurements of the $y$-differential cross section and the first polarization analysis of coherently photoproduced $J/\psi$ in peripheral Pb$-$Pb collisions with the ALICE detector at forward rapidity in the dimuon decay channel. Comparison with models will be shown when available.

Abstract:The STAR experiment at RHIC is carrying out a comprehensive high-energy spin physics program to understand the internal structure and dynamics of the proton in polarized proton-proton collisions at = 200 GeV and = 500/510 GeV. STAR has the capability, with nearly full azimuthal coverage, to reconstruct leptons, hadrons and jets in the mid-rapidity region (|η| < 1). The results for inclusive jet longitudinal double spin asymmetries taken during the 2009 RHIC run indicate the first non-zero gluon contribution (Δg(x,Q2)/g(x,Q2)) to the proton spin for 0.05 < x < 1 (Bjorken-x: momentum fraction of partons). Recent longitudinal single-spin asymmetry measurements of W+/− bosons at = 500/510 GeV in polarized proton-proton collisions provide a direct probe of the polarized anti-u and anti-d quark distributions (Δū(x, Q2), Δ(x, Q2)). These results better constrain the polarized gluon and sea quark distributions of the proton in the RHIC sensitive kinematic region. Future measurements with continuing high energy polarized proton-proton run at RHIC and detector upgrade will explore the gluonic contribution to the proton spin in extended range.

Abstract:We study the polarized gluon distribution Δg(x) in a longitudinally polarized proton. We argue that the distribution can be calculated approximately from the quark color currents found in simple quark models. The first result from the MIT bag model as well as the non-relativistic quark model shows that Δg(x) is positive at all x. If this feature holds in QCD, it imposes a strong constraint on phenomenological fits to experimental data. The total gluon helicity ΔG from the bag model is about 0.3ℏ at the scale of 1 GeV, considerably smaller than previous theoretical expectations.
A Method for Measuring J/ Ψ Polarization in Hadron Collisions

Abstract:The authors describe a method for measuring the polarization of prompt J/Ψ mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at the center of mass energy s=10 TeV(and above)as a function of the J/Ψ transverse momentum.This measurement can be made with -50 pb-1 of data to be collected by the CMS detector during the first period of LHC operations.The authors study potential biases in the fit procedure used to extract the polarization parameter α,and to determine the expected measurement sensitivity.The precision of the method is limited by statistics and systematic uncertainties,and is estimated about Δαstat<0.13,Δαsyst<0.01.This measurement is expected to provide some insight into the currently observed disagreement between the non-relativistic QCD theory and the recent J/Ψ polarization measurements by CDF on the Tevatron collider at Fermilab.

Abstract:Within a quark model the process γp → ηp, for Eγlab < 1.2 GeV, is investigated. We find that the recent data from GRAAL on the polarized beam asymmetry require significant contributions from the resonances D13(1520), F15(1680), and to a lesser extent from P13(1720) in addition to those from the dominant S11(1535) resonance, implied by the Mainz differential cross-section data. The contributions from the resonances S11(1650), D13(1700) and D15(1675) are found consistently small but sensitive to the polarized target asymmetry measured recently at ELSA. These results are shown to be consistent with the quark model predictions.
Recent STAR Measurements to Constrain the Polarized Gluon Distribution Function of the Proton

Abstract:The STAR experiment has been studying the spin structure of the proton, using the unique high-energy polarized proton collider, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The kinematic coverage at STAR allows accessing gluons because quark-gluon and gluon-gluon scatterings dominate particle production at low and medium transverse momenta. The polarized gluon distribution function can be constrained by measuring the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ($A_{LL}$) of jet production and neutral pions. Global QCD analyses of polarized parton distribution functions, which include the 2009 $A_{LL}$ STAR results for inclusive jet production at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, provide evidence of a non-zero gluon polarization in the measured range of partonic momentum fraction $x > 0.05$. We present the status of the latest measurements of $A_{LL}$ at STAR, for inclusive jet and dijet production at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV and 200 GeV collected in 2013 and 2015 respectively, both at mid-rapidity ($|\eta|<0.9$). The large data sample taken during these years will improve the precision of our knowledge about the proton spin structure while the increased center of mass energy allows probing the polarized gluon distribution function at smaller partonic momentum fraction. Furthermore, we present measurements of $A_{LL}$ for neutral pions at forward rapidity ($2.65<\eta<3.9$) collected during 2012 and 2013 that also allow reaching lower partonic momentum fraction. We compare these measurements with the latest global analyses.

Abstract:The production mechanisms of charmonium states in both hadronic and heavy-ion collisions hold great significance for investigating the hot and dense QCD matter. Studying charmonium polarization in ultrarelativistic collisions can also provide insights into the underlying production mechanisms. With this motivation, we explore the J/ψ and ψ(2S) polarization in proton + proton collisions at s=7 , 8, and 13 TeV using a pQCD-inspired Monte Carlo event generator called pythia 8. This work considers reconstructed quarkonia through their dimuons decay channel in the ALICE forward rapidity acceptance range of 2.5<yμμ<4 . Further, we calculate the polarization parameters λθ, λφ, λθφ from the polar and azimuthal angular distributions of the dimuons in helicity and Collins-Soper frames. This study presents a comprehensive measurement of the polarization parameters as a function of transverse momentum, charged-particle multiplicity, and rapidity at the LHC energies. Abstract:We study azimuthal asymmetries in diffractive Jl psi production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies using the color glass condensate effective theory. Our calculation successfully describes the azimuthal averaged Jl psi production cross section measured by STAR and ALICE. We further predict very large cos 2 phi and cos 4 phi azimuthal asymmetries for diffractive Jl psi production both in UPCs at RHIC and LHC energies and in eA collisions at EIC energies. These novel polarization dependent observables may provide complementary information for constraining gluon transverse spatial distribution inside large nuclei. As compared to all previous analysis of diffractive Jl psi production, the essential new elements integrated in our theoretical calculations are: the double-slit interference effect, the linear polarization of coherent photons, and the final state soft photon radiation effect.

Abstract:We study the possibility of measuring the nucleon's transversity distribution h1(x) through transversely polarized hadron-hadron collisions. We present the double-spin asymmetries of the underlying parton subprocesses for Drell-Yan lepton-pair, direct-photon, heavy-quark, and other particles production. Then we estimate the associated observable asymmetries using a simple model for the transversity distribution. We also discuss a twist-three pi-p scattering process which is sensitive to h1(x).

Abstract:In the past year, polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments at CERN and SLAC have obtained structure function measurements off proton, neutron and deuteron targets at a level of precision never before achieved. The measurements can be used to test the Bjorken and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules, and also to obtain information on the parton distributions in polarized nucleons. We perform a global leading-order QCD fit to the proton deep inelastic data in order to extract the spin-dependent parton distributions. By using parametric forms which are consistent with theoretical expectations at large and small $x$, we find that the quark distributions are now rather well constrained. We assume that there is no significant intrinsic polarization of the strange quark sea. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. The spin-dependent distributions we obtain can be used as input to phenomenological studies for future polarized hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron colliders.

Abstract:A small-$x$ helicity evolution has been derived in 2016-18 and received an important modification in 2022. This article discusses its general framework and summarizes the recent theoretical developments, including the asymptotic behaviors of helicity PDFs and $g_1$ structure function at small $x$. The latest fits to various polarized scattering data are also discussed. The results from this research program will provide important theoretical inputs for the future polarized small-$x$ measurements at the electron-ion collider (EIC).
