Abstract:Through the triple-alpha process occurring in red giant stars the bulk of the carbon existing in our universe is produced. We calculated the change of the triple-alpha reaction rate for slight variations of the nucleon-nucleon force using a microscopic 12-body model. Stellar model calculations for a low-mass, intermediate-mass and massive star using the different triple-alpha reaction rates obtained with different strengths of the N-N interaction have been performed. Even with a change of 0.4% in the strength of N-N force, carbon-based life appears to be impossible, since all the stars then would produce either almost solely carbon or oxygen, but could not produce both elements.

Abstract:Characteristics of the decay of alpha like nuclei produced in various reactions with alpha conjugate nuclei are discussed. We observe a significant number of events in which a large fraction of the system breaks up into alpha-conjugate nuclei. Lighter fragments in the various decay channels appear to originate from a neck-like region between 4 and 7 cm/ns whereas the heavier fragments appear to originate from velocities near the beam velocity. This behavior is consistent with a hierarchy effect that cannot be explained by statistical processes.

Abstract:Carbon is produced during the helium burning phase of sufficiently massive stars through the triple alpha process. The $0^+$ energy level of the carbon nucleus allows for resonant nuclear reactions, which act to greatly increase the carbon yields compared to the non-resonant case. Many authors have argued that small changes to the energy level of this resonance would lead to a significantly lower carbon abundance in the universe, and this sensitivity is often considered an example of fine-tuning. By considering spallation reactions occuring during the process of planet formation, this paper presents a partial solution to this triple alpha fine-tuning problem. Young stellar objects generate substantial luminosities of particle radiation (cosmic rays) that can drive nuclear reactions through spallation. If the standard triple alpha process is inoperative, stars tend to synthesize oxygen (and other alpha elements) rather than carbon. Cosmic rays can interact with oxygen nuclei to produce carbon while planets are forming. The resulting carbon abundances are significant, but much smaller than those observed in our universe. However, for a range of conditions -- as delineated herein -- spallation reactions can result in carbon-to-oxygen ratios roughly comparable to those found on Earth and thereby obviate the triple alpha fine-tuning problem.

The Branchings of the Main s-process: Their Sensitivity to alpha-induced Reactions on 13C and 22Ne and to the Uncertainties of the Nuclear Network

Abstract:This paper provides a detailed analysis of the main component of the slow neutron capture process (the s-process), which accounts for the solar abundances of half of the nuclei with 90 <~ A <~ 208. We examine the impact of the uncertainties of the two neutron sources operating in low-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars: the 13C(alpha, n)16O reaction, which releases neutrons radiatively during interpulse periods (kT ~ 8 keV), and the 22Ne(alpha, n)25Mg reaction, partially activated during the convective thermal pulses (TPs). We focus our attention on the branching points that mainly influence the abundance of s-only isotopes. In our AGB models, the 13C is fully consumed radiatively during interpulse. In this case, we find that the present uncertainty associated to the 13C(alpha, n)16O reaction has marginal effects on s-only nuclei. On the other hand, a reduction of this rate may increase the amount of residual (or unburned) 13C at the end of the interpulse: in this condition, the residual 13C is burned at higher temperature in the convective zone powered by the following TP. The neutron burst produced by the 22Ne(alpha, n)25Mg reaction has major effects on the branches along the s path. The contributions of s-only isotopes with 90 <~ A <= 204 are reproduced within solar and nuclear uncertainties, even if the 22Ne(alpha, n)25Mg rate is varied by a factor of two. Improved beta-decay and neutron capture rates of a few key radioactive nuclides would help to attain a comprehensive understanding of the solar main component.

Abstract:The $^{13}{\rm C}(\alpha,n)^{16}{\rm O}$ reaction is considered to be the main neutron source responsible for the production of heavy nuclides (from ${\rm Sr}$ to ${\rm Bi}$) through slow $n$-capture nucleosynthesis ($s$-process) at low temperatures during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of low mass stars ($\lesssim 3-4\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$, or LMSs). In recent years, several direct and indirect measurements have been carried out to determine the cross section at the energies of astrophysical interest (around $190\pm40\;{\rm keV}$). However, they yield inconsistent results causing a highly uncertain reaction rate and affecting the neutron release in LMSs. In this work we have combined two indirect approaches, the asymptotic normalization coefficient (or ANC) and the Trojan Horse Method (THM), to unambiguously determine the absolute value of the $^{13}{\rm C}(\alpha,n)^{16}{\rm O}$ astrophysical factor. Therefore, we have determined a very accurate reaction rate to be introduced into astrophysical models of $s$-process nucleosynthesis in LMSs. Calculations using such recommended rate have shown limited variations in the production of those neutron-rich nuclei (with $86\leq A\leq 209$) receiving contribution only by slow neutron captures.

$s$-Processing in AGB Stars Revisited. II. Enhanced $^{13}$C Production Through MHD-Induced Mixing

Abstract:Slow neutron captures are responsible for the production of about $50\%$ of elements heavier than iron, mainly, occurring during the asymptotic giant branch phase of low-mass stars ($1$ $\lesssim M$/M$_{\odot}$ $\lesssim$ $3$), where the main neutron source is the $^{13}$C($\alpha$,n)$^{16}$O reaction. This last is activated from locally-produced $^{13}$C, formed by partial mixing of hydrogen into the He-rich layers. We present here the first attempt at describing a physical mechanism for the formation of the $^{13}$C reservoir, studying the mass circulation induced by magnetic buoyancy and without adding new free parameters to those already involved in stellar modelling. Our approach represents the application, to the stellar layers relevant for $s$-processing, of recent exact, analytical 2D and 3D models for magneto-hydrodynamic processes at the base of convective envelopes in evolved stars in order to promote downflows of envelope material for mass conservation, during the occurrence of a dredge-up phenomenon. We find that the proton penetration is characterized by small concentrations, but extended over a large fractional mass of the He-layers, thus producing $^{13}$C reservoirs of several $10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$. The ensuing $^{13}$C-enriched zone has an almost flat profile, while only a limited production of $^{14}$N occurs. In order to verify the effects of our new findings we show how the abundances of the main $s$-component nuclei can be accounted for in solar proportions and how our large $^{13}$C-reservoir allows us to solve a few so far unexplained features in the abundance distribution of post-AGB objects.

The s-Process in Rotating Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

Abstract:(abridged) We model the nucleosynthesis during the thermal pulse phase of a rotating, solar metallicity AGB star of 3M_sun. Rotationally induced mixing during the thermal pulses produces a layer (~2E-5M_sun) on top of the CO-core where large amounts of protons and C12 co-exist. We follow the abundance evolution in this layer, in particular that of the neutron source C13 and of the neutron poison N14. In our AGB model mixing persists during the entire interpulse phase due to the steep angular velocity gradient at the core-envelope interface. We follow the neutron production during the interpulse phase, and find a resulting maximum neutron exposure of tau_max =0.04 mbarn^-1, which is too small to produce any significant s-process. In parametric models, we then investigate the combined effects of diffusive overshooting from the convective envelope and rotationally induced mixing. Models with overshoot and weaker interpulse mixing - as perhaps expected from more slowly rotating stars - yield larger neutron exposures. We conclude that the incorporation of rotationally induce mixing processes has important consequences for the production of heavy elements in AGB stars. Through a distribution of initial rotation rates it may lead to a natural spread in the neutron exposures obtained in AGB stars of a given mass - as appears to be required by observations. Our results suggest that both processes, diffusive overshoot and rotational mixing, may be required to obtain a consistent description of the s-process in AGB stars which fulfils all observational constraints. Finally, we find that mixing due to rotation within our current framework does increase the production of N15 in the partial mixing zone, however still falling short of what seems required by observations.

Abstract:The evolution of massive stars with very low-metallicities depends critically on the amount of CNO nuclides which they produce. The $^{12}$N($p$,\,$\gamma$)$^{13}$O reaction is an important branching point in the rap-processes, which are believed to be alternative paths to the slow 3$\alpha$ process for producing CNO seed nuclei and thus could change the fate of massive stars. In the present work, the angular distribution of the $^2$H($^{12}$N,\,$^{13}$O)$n$ proton transfer reaction at $E_{\mathrm{c.m.}}$ = 8.4 MeV has been measured for the first time. Based on the Johnson-Soper approach, the square of the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) for the virtual decay of $^{13}$O$_\mathrm{g.s.}$ $\rightarrow$ $^{12}$N + $p$ was extracted to be 3.92 $\pm$ 1.47 fm$^{-1}$ from the measured angular distribution and utilized to compute the direct component in the $^{12}$N($p$,\,$\gamma$)$^{13}$O reaction. The direct astrophysical S-factor at zero energy was then found to be 0.39 $\pm$ 0.15 keV b. By considering the direct capture into the ground state of $^{13}$O, the resonant capture via the first excited state of $^{13}$O and their interference, we determined the total astrophysical S-factors and rates of the $^{12}$N($p$,\,$\gamma$)$^{13}$O reaction. The new rate is two orders of magnitude slower than that from the REACLIB compilation. Our reaction network calculations with the present rate imply that $^{12}$N($p,\,\gamma$)$^{13}$O will only compete successfully with the $\beta^+$ decay of $^{12}$N at higher ($\sim$two orders of magnitude) densities than initially predicted.

Abstract:α clustering plays an important role in studying not only nuclear structures but also nuclear reactions of light nuclei. In this work, we study the O18,16+13,12C fusion-evaporation reactions at the energy near the Coulomb barrier using a modified statistical model with the α-cluster structures taken into consideration explicitly in the nuclear level densities. This modified statistical model reproduces successfully the experimentally measured α-emission cross sections, and thus provides a possible way to resolve the underestimation discrepancy of the α emission in the original statistical model. Moreover, the modified statistical model could also describe well the angular distributions of the evaporation residues and the energy spectra of the emitted α particles. Therefore, our work shows that α-cluster structures could play an important role in the fusion-evaporation reactions of light ions, and the modified statistical model is a reliable theoretical model for these physical processes.

Abstract:The surface of neutron-rich heavy nuclei, with a neutron skin created by excess neutrons, provides an important terrestrial model system to study dilute neutron-rich matter. By using quasi-free alpha cluster-knockout reactions, we obtained direct experimental evidence for the formation of alpha clusters at the surface of neutron-rich tin isotopes. The observed monotonous decrease of the reaction cross sections with increasing mass number, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction, implies a tight interplay between alpha-cluster formation and the neutron skin. This result, in turn, calls for a revision of the correlation between the neutron-skin thickness and the density dependence of the symmetry energy, which is essential for understanding neutron stars. Our result also provides a natural explanation for the origin of alpha particles in alpha decay.

Abstract:The 12C(p,{\gamma})13N reaction is the onset process of both the CNO and Hot CNO cycles that drive massive star, Red and Asymptotic Giant Branch star and novae nucleosynthesis. The 12C(p,{\gamma})13N rate affects the final abundances of the stable 12,13C nuclides, with ramifications for meteoritic carbon isotopic abundances and the s-process neutron source strength. Here, a new underground measurement of the 12C(p,{\gamma})13N cross-section is reported. The present data, obtained at the Felsenkeller shallow-underground laboratory in Dresden (Germany), encompass the 320-620 keV center of mass energy range to include the wide and poorly constrained E = 422 keV resonance that dominates the rate at high temperatures. This work S-factor results, lower than literature by 25%, are included in a new comprehensive R-matrix fit, and the energy of the 1+ first excited state of 13N is found to be 2369.6(4) keV, with radiative and proton width of 0.49(3) eV and 34.9(2) keV respectively. A new reaction rate, based on present R-matrix fit and extrapolation, is suggested.

Revisiting the 3α reaction rates in helium burning stars

Abstract:Helium burning is one of the most fundamental steps of stellar nucleosynthesis, as it describes the formation of life-determining element of carbon, while it plays a key role in the evolution of Red Giant, accreting White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars. In this work we develop a generalized statistical theory for the 3{\alpha} reaction, which is based on the use of the Imaginary Time Method, along with the semi-classical Hybrid {\alpha}-Clustering (H{\alpha}C) and Neck Model (NM) frameworks. The results compared to the methodology and data of the NACRE collaboration, following in several orders of magnitude discrepancies, especially at low temperatures. This may be crucial for the early dynamics of helium burning stars.

The Effects of Thermonuclear Reaction-Rate Variations on 26Al Production in Massive Stars: a Sensitivity Study

Abstract:We investigate the effects of thermonuclear reaction rate variations on 26Al production in massive stars. The dominant production sites in such events were recently investigated by using stellar model calculations: explosive neon-carbon burning, convective shell carbon burning, and convective core hydrogen burning. Post-processing nucleosynthesis calculations are performed for each of these sites by adopting temperature-density-time profiles from recent stellar evolution models. For each profile, we individually multiplied the rates of all relevant reactions by factors of 10, 2, 0.5 and 0.1, and analyzed the resulting abundance changes of 26Al. Our simulations are based on a next-generation nuclear physics library, called STARLIB, which contains a recent evaluation of Monte Carlo reaction rates. Particular attention is paid to quantifying the rate uncertainties of those reactions that most sensitively influence 26Al production. For stellar modelers our results indicate to what degree predictions of 26Al nucleosynthesis depend on currently uncertain nuclear physics input, while for nuclear experimentalists our results represent a guide for future measurements. We tabulate the results of our reaction rate sensitivity study for each of the three distinct massive star sites referred to above. It is found that several current reaction rate uncertainties influence the production of 26Al. Particularly important reactions are 26Al(n,p)26Mg, 25Mg(alpha,n)28Si, 24Mg(n,gamma)25Mg and 23Na(alpha,p)26Mg. These reactions should be prime targets for future measurements. Overall, we estimate that the nuclear physics uncertainty of the 26Al yield predicted by the massive star models explored here amounts to about a factor of 3.

The astrophysical $S-$factor and reaction rate for $^{15}$N($p,γ$)$^{16}$O within the modified potential cluster model

Abstract:We study a radiative $p^{15}$N capture on the ground state of $^{16}$O at stellar energies within the framework of a modified potential cluster model (MPCM) with forbidden states, including low-lying resonances. The investigation of the $^{15}$N($p,\gamma _{0}$)$^{16}$O reaction includes the consideration of $^{3}S_{1}$ resonances due to $E1$ transitions and the contribution of $^{3}P_{1}$ scattering wave in $p$ + $^{15}$N channel due to $^{3}P_{1}\longrightarrow $ $^{3}P_{0}$ $M1$ transition. We calculated the astrophysical low-energy $S-$factor, and extrapolated $S(0)$ turned out to be within $34.7-40.4$ keV$\cdot $b. The important role of the asymptotic constant (AC) for the $^{15}$N($p,\gamma _{0}$)$^{16}$O process with interfering $^{3}S_{1}$(312) and $^{3}S_{1}$(962) resonances is elucidated. A comparison of our calculation for $S-$factor with existing experimental and theoretical data is addressed, and a reasonable agreement is found. The reaction rate is calculated and compared with the existing rates. It has negligible dependence on the variation of AC, but shows a strong impact of the interference of $^{3}S_{1}$(312) and $^{3}S_{1}$(962) resonances, especially at temperatures, referring to the CNO Gamow windows. We estimate the contribution of cascade transitions to the reaction rate based on the exclusive experimental data by \textit{Imbriani, et al. 2012}. The reaction rate enhancement due to the cascade transitions is observed from $T_{9} > 0.3 $ and reaches the maximum factor $\sim $\ 1.3 at $T_{9}=1.3$. We present the Gamow energy window and a comparison of rates for radiative proton capture reactions $^{12}$N($p,\gamma $)$^{13}$O, $^{13}$N($p,\gamma $) $^{14}$O, $^{14}$N($p,\gamma $)$^{15}$O, and $^{15}$N($p,\gamma $)$^{16}$O obtained in the framework of the MPCM and give temperature windows, prevalence, and significance of each process.

Abstract:The study of cluster structures in light nuclei is extending to the heavy nuclei in these years. As for the stable N = Z nuclei, from the lighter 8Be, 12C nuclei to the heavier 20Ne and even the 40Ca and 44Ti medium nuclei, the α cluster structures have been well studied and confirmed. In heavy nuclei, due to the dominated mean field, the existence of α cluster structure is not clear as light nuclei but some clues were found for indicating the core+α cluster structure in some nuclei, in particular, the 208Pb+α structure in 212Po. We review some recent progress about the theoretical and experimental explorations of the α-clustering effects in heavy nuclei. We also discuss the possible α cluster structure of heavy nuclei from the view of α decay.
Alpha-clustering effects on 16 O( γ ,np) 14 N in the quasi-deuteron region

Abstract:. Photonuclear reaction in the quasi-deuteron regime has been investigated in an extended Quantum Molecular Dynamics model at a photon energy of 70-120 MeV. Particularly, the reaction channel of 16 O( γ ,np) 14 N is focused where 16 O is considered as having different α -clustering configurations as well as regular spherical structure. Because of three-body decay from the above photonuclear reaction, we can investigate many observables including the recoil momentum, missing energy, pair momentum/energy and opening angle of ejected neutron and proton, hyper-angle and hyper-radius distributions, etc. These quantitative results demonstrate an obvious difference among different initial configurations of 16 O, which can be attributed to the spatial-momentum correlation of a neutron-proton pair inside the nucleus. The results illustrate that photonuclear reaction is a good tool to explore different α -clustering structures.

Abstract:The surface [C/N] ratios of evolved giants are strongly affected by the first dredge-up (FDU) of nuclear-processed material from stellar cores. C and N also have distinct nucleosynthetic origins and serve as diagnostics of mixing and mass loss. We use subgiants to find strong trends in the birth [C/N] with [Fe/H], which differ between the low-$\alpha$ and high-$\alpha$ populations. We demonstrate that these birth trends have a strong impact on the surface abundances after the FDU. This effect is neglected in current stellar models, which use solar-scaled C and N. We map out the FDU as a function of evolutionary state, mass, and composition using a large and precisely measured asteroseismic dataset in first-ascent red giant branch (RGB) and core He-burning, or red clump (RC), stars. We describe the domains where [C/N] is a useful mass diagnostic and find that the RC complements the RGB and extends the range of validity to higher mass. We find evidence for extra mixing on the RGB below [Fe/H]= -0.4, matching literature results, for high-$\alpha$ giants, but there is no clear evidence of mixing in the low-$\alpha$ giants. The predicted signal of mass loss is weak and difficult to detect in our sample. We discuss implications for stellar physics and stellar population applications.

Abstract:Nuclear reactions drive stellar evolution and contribute to stellar and galactic chemical abundances. New determinations of the nuclear reaction rates in key fusion reactions of stellar evolution are now available, paving the way for improved stellar model predictions. We explore the impact of new $ C+^ \!C$ reaction rates in massive star evolution, structure, and nucleosynthesis at carbon ignition and during the core carbon-burning phase. We analyse the consequences for stars of different masses including rotation-induced mixing. We computed a grid of massive stars from 8 to 30 M$_ at solar metallicity using the stellar evolution code GENEC, and including the new reaction rates. We explored the results using three different references for the rates, with or without rotation. We studied the effect in terms of evolution, structure, and the critical mass limit between intermediate and massive stars. We explored the consequences for heavy-element nucleosynthesis during the core carbon-burning phase by means of a one-zone nucleosynthesis code. We confirm the significant impact of using the recent nuclear reaction rates following the fusion suppression hypothesis at deep sub-barrier energies (hindrance hypothesis) as well as the mass-dependent effect of a resonance at 2.14 MeV with dominant feeding of the alpha exit channel of $ C+^ \!C$ fusion reaction. This impacts the characteristics of the core of stars from the C-ignition and during the entire core C-burning phase (temperature and density, lifetime, size, convective or radiative core). The change in nuclear reaction rates modifies the central nucleosynthesis of the stars during the core-carbon burning phase, resulting in an underproduction of s-process elements, especially when including the rotation-induced mixing that amplifies the effects. The correct and accurate determination of the nuclear reaction rates, especially with the existence and location of resonances, impacts stellar evolution in many respects, affecting models' predictions. The choice of the nuclear reaction rates reference for the $ C+^ C$ fusion reaction significantly changes the behaviour of the core during the carbon-burning phase, and consequently drives changes in the nucleosynthesis and end-of-life of stars. This choice needs, then, to be made carefully in order to interpret stellar evolution from the super asymptotic giant branch phase and its massive white dwarf remnants to the core-collapse supernovae of massive stars.

Abstract:Fusion-evaporation reactions of carbon and oxygen isotopes at near-Coulomb-barrier energies are important subjects in nuclear-reaction studies. They are closely related to nucleosynthesis in astrophysics and may provide novel opportunities to study the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-clustering effect in light nuclei. In this work, the $^{16\ensuremath{-}18}\mathrm{O}+^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{16,18}\mathrm{O}+^{12,13}\mathrm{C}$ fusion-evaporation reactions are studied by using the statistical model based on the Hauser-Feshbach formalism. It is found that the statistical model with the original Gilbert-Cameron level-density formula typically underestimates the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-emission cross sections. To overcome this problem, we introduce for the residual nuclei a new level-density formula with the correction term inspired by theoretical considerations on the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-clustering effect. Compared with the original Gilbert-Cameron level-density formula, our statistical-model calculations with the new level-density formula show significant improvements.

Abstract:In this work we suggest some methods based on the statistical and knock-on models, for evaluation of the α-clustering factor or α-clustering probability in (n, α) reactions induced by slow and fast neutrons. The main purpose of this study is to compare the values of the α-clustering factors obtained by the compound and direct mechanisms for the same nuclear reactions.
