Abstract:Understanding the quantum nature of the gravitational field is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges in theoretical physics. Despite significant progress, a complete and consistent theory remains elusive. However, in the weak field approximation -- where curvature effects are small -- we can explore some expected properties of such a theory. Particularly relevant to this study is the quantum nature of gravitational waves, which are represented as small perturbations in flat spacetime. In this framework, a quantum description of these perturbations, as a quantum field, is feasible, leading to the emergence of the graviton. Here we consider a non-relativistic quantum system interacting with such a field. We employ the consistent histories approach to quantum mechanics, which allows us to frame classical questions in a quantum context, to define a fluctuation relation for this system. As a result, thermodynamic entropy must be produced in the system due to its unavoidable interaction with the quantum fluctuations of spacetime.

Abstract:Entanglement entropy quantifies the amount of uncertainty of a quantum state. For quantum fields in curved space, entanglement entropy of the quantum field theory degrees of freedom is well-defined for a fixed background geometry. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the quantum field theory entanglement entropy by including dynamical gravity. The generalized quantity named effective entropy, and its Renyi entropy generalizations, are defined by analytic continuation of a gravitational path integral on replica geometry with a co-dimension-$2$ brane at the boundary of region we are studying. We discuss different approaches to define the region in a gauge invariant way, and show that the effective entropy satisfies the quantum extremal surface formula. When the quantum fields carry a significant amount of entanglement, the quantum extremal surface can have a topology transition, after which an entanglement island region appears. Our result generalizes the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formula of holographic entropy (with quantum corrections) to general geometries without asymptotic AdS boundary, and provides a more solid framework for addressing problems such as the Page curve of evaporating black holes in asymptotic flat spacetime. We apply the formula to two example systems, a closed two-dimensional universe and a four-dimensional maximally extended Schwarzchild black hole. We discuss the analog of the effective entropy in random tensor network models, which provides more concrete understanding of quantum information properties in general dynamical geometries. By introducing ancilla systems, we show how quantum information in the entanglement island can be reconstructed in a state-dependent and observer-dependent map. We study the closed universe (without spatial boundary) case and discuss how it is related to open universe.

Abstract:Entanglement has become central for the characterization of quantum matter both in and out of equilibrium. In a dynamical context entanglement exhibits universal linear temporal growth in generic systems, which stems from the underlying linear light cones as they occur in planar geometries. Inhomogeneous spacetimes can lead, however, to strongly bent trajectories. While such bent trajectories crucially impact correlation spreading and therefore the light-cone structure, it has remained elusive how this influences the entanglement dynamics. In this work we investigate the real-time evolution of the entanglement entropy in one-dimensional quantum systems after quenches which change the underlying spacetime background of the Hamiltonian. Concretely, we focus on the Rindler space describing the spacetime in close vicinity to a black hole. As a main result we find that entanglement grows sublinearly in a generic fashion both for interacting and noninteracting quantum matter. We further observe that the asymptotic relaxation becomes exponential, as opposed to algebraic for planar Minkowski spacetimes, and that in the vicinity of the black hole the relaxation time for large subsystems becomes independent of the subsystem size. We study entanglement dynamics both for the case of noninteracting fermions, allowing for exact numerical solutions, and for random unitary circuits representing a paradigmatic class of ergodic systems.
In-in formalism for the entropy of quantum fields in curved spacetimes

Abstract:We show how to compute the purity and entanglement entropy for quantum fields in a systematic perturbative expansion. To that end, we generalize the in-in formalism to non-unitary dynamics (i.e. accounting for the presence of an environment) and to the calculation of quantum information measures, which are not observables in the usual sense. This allows us to reduce the problem to one involving standard correlation functions, and to organize their computation in a diagrammatic expansion for which we construct the corresponding Feynman rules. As an illustration, we apply the formalism to a cosmological setting inspired by the effective field theory of inflation. We find that at late times, non-linear loop corrections share the same time behavior as the linear contribution, and only yield a slight redressing of the purity. In particular, when the environment is heavy compared to the Hubble scale, the phenomenon of recoherence previously encountered is robust to the class of non-linear extensions considered. Bridging the gap between perturbative quantum field theory and open quantum systems paves the way to a better understanding of renormalization and resummation in open effective field theories. It also enables a more systematic exploration of quantum information properties in field theoretic settings.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement due to geometric corrections in particle creation during inflation. To do so, we propose a single-field inflationary scenario, nonminimally coupled to the scalar curvature of spacetime. We require particle production to be purely geometric, setting to zero the Bogolubov coefficients and computing the $S$ matrix associated to spacetime perturbations, which are traced back to inflaton fluctuations. The corresponding particle density leads to a nonzero entanglement entropy whose effects are investigated at primordial time of Universe evolution. The possibility of modeling our particle candidate in terms of dark matter is discussed. The classical back-reaction of inhomogeneities on the homogeneous dynamical background degrees of freedom is also studied and quantified in the slow-roll regime.

Thermodynamic entropy production in the dynamical Casimir effect

Abstract:This paper address the question of thermodynamic entropy production in the context of the dynamical Casimir effect. Specifically, we study a scalar quantum field confined within a one-dimensional ideal cavity subject to time-varying boundary conditions dictated by an externally prescribed trajectory of one of the cavity mirrors. The central question is how the thermodynamic entropy of the field evolves over time. Utilizing an effective Hamiltonian approach, we compute the entropy production and reveal that it exhibits scaling behavior concerning the number of particles created in the short-time limit. Furthermore, this approach elucidates the direct connection between this entropy and the emergence of quantum coherence within the mode basis of the field. In addition, by considering a distinct approach based on the time evolution of Gaussian states we examine the long-time limit of entropy production within a single mode of the field. This approach results in establishing a connection between the thermodynamic entropy production in a single field mode and the entanglement between that particular mode and all other modes. Consequently, by employing two distinct approaches, we comprehensively address both the short-term and long-term dynamics of the system. Our results thus link the irreversible dynamics of the field, as measured by entropy production and induced by the dynamical Casimir effect, to two fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics: coherence and entanglement.

Abstract:In the standard entropic mechanism adopted in the simple Ekpyrotic models to generate the nearly scale-invariant and Gaussian primordial perturbation, the entropy direction is tachyonically unstable. In this Letter, we consider the stable production of the scale-invariant entropy perturbation in the Ekpyrotic universe via non-minimal couplings. In this model the non-minimally coupled massless scalar field serves as a spectator and is stabilized by the introduced non-minimal couplings. It always corresponds to the entropy field during the contraction and with appropriate couplings can obtain a scale-invariant spectrum. This scenario requires additional mechanisms such as curvaton or modulated preheating to convert the entropy perturbation to the curvature perturbation after the bounce.
Emergent particles of de Sitter: thermal interpretation of the stochastic formalism and beyond

Abstract:A thermal interpretation of the stochastic formalism of a slow-rolling scalar field in de Sitter (dS) is given. We construct a correspondence between Hubble patches of dS and particles living in another space called an abstract space. By assuming a dual description of scalar fields and classical mechanics in the abstract space, we show that the stochastic evolution of the infrared part of the field is equivalent to the Brownian motion in the abstract space filled with a heat bath of massless particles. The 1st slow-roll condition and the Hubble expansion are also reinterpreted in the abstract space as the speed of light and a transfer of conserved energy, respectively. Inspired by this, we sketch quantum emergent particles, which may realize the Hubble expansion by an exponential particle production. This gives another meaning of dS entropy as entropy per Hubble volume.

Spacetime Entanglement Entropy: Covariance and Discreteness

Abstract:We review some recent results on Sorkin's spacetime formulation of the entanglement entropy (SSEE) for a free quantum scalar field both in the continuum and in manifold-like causal sets. The SSEE for a causal diamond in a 2d cylinder spacetime has been shown to have a Calabrese-Cardy form, while for de Sitter and Schwarzschild de Sitter horizons in dimensions $d>2$, it matches the mode-wise von-Neumann entropy. In these continuum examples the SSEE is regulated by imposing a UV cut-off. Manifold-like causal sets come with a natural covariant spacetime cut-off and thus provide an arena to study regulated QFT. However, the SSEE for different manifold like causal sets in $d=2$ and $d=4$ has been shown to exhibit a volume rather than an area law. The area law is recovered only when an additional UV cut-off is implemented in the scaling regime of the spectrum which mimics the continuum behaviour. We discuss the implications of these results and suggest that a volume-law may be a manifestation of the fundamental non-locality of causal sets and a sign of new UV physics.

Dynamics of Entropy Production Rate in Two Coupled Bosonic Modes Interacting with a Thermal Reservoir

Abstract:The Markovian time evolution of the entropy production rate is studied as a measure of irreversibility generated in a bipartite quantum system consisting of two coupled bosonic modes immersed in a common thermal environment. The dynamics of the system is described in the framework of the formalism of the theory of open quantum systems based on completely positive quantum dynamical semigroups, for initial two-mode squeezed thermal states, squeezed vacuum states, thermal states and coherent states. We show that the rate of the entropy production of the initial state and nonequilibrium stationary state, and the time evolution of the rate of entropy production, strongly depend on the parameters of the initial Gaussian state (squeezing parameter and average thermal photon numbers), frequencies of modes, parameters characterising the thermal environment (temperature and dissipation coefficient), and the strength of coupling between the two modes. We also provide a comparison of the behaviour of entropy production rate and Rényi-2 mutual information present in the considered system.

Abstract:We give a detailed theory for the leading coarse-grained dynamics of entanglement entropy of states and of operators in generic short-range interacting quantum many-body systems. This includes operators spreading under Heisenberg time evolution, which we find are much less entangled than "typical" operators of the same spatial support. Extending previous conjectures based on random circuit dynamics, we provide evidence that the leading-order entanglement dynamics of a given chaotic system are determined by a function $\mathcal{E}(v)$, which is model-dependent, but which we argue satisfies certain general constraints. In a minimal membrane picture, $\mathcal{E}(v)$ is the "surface tension" of the membrane and is a function of the membrane's orientation $v$ in spacetime. For one-dimensional (1D) systems this surface tension is related by a Legendre transformation to an entanglement entropy growth rate $\Gamma(\partial S/\partial x)$ which depends on the spatial "gradient" of the entanglement entropy $S(x,t)$ across the cut at position $x$. We show how to extract the entanglement growth functions numerically in 1D at infinite temperature using the concept of the operator entanglement of the time evolution operator, and we discuss possible universality of $\mathcal{E}$ at low temperatures. Our theoretical ideas are tested against and informed by numerical results for a quantum-chaotic 1D spin Hamiltonian. These results are relevant to the broad class of chaotic many-particle systems or field theories with spatially local interactions, both in 1D and above.
Quantum fluctuation theorem in a curved spacetime

Abstract:The interplay between thermodynamics, general relativity and quantum mechanics has long intrigued researchers. Recently, important advances have been obtained in thermodynamics, mainly regarding its application to the quantum domain through fluctuation theorems. In this letter, we apply Fermi normal coordinates to report a fully general relativistic detailed quantum fluctuation theorem based on the two point measurement scheme. We demonstrate how the spacetime curvature can produce entropy in a localized quantum system moving in a general spacetime. The example of a quantum harmonic oscillator living in an expanding universe is presented. This result implies that entropy production is strongly observer dependent and deeply connects the arrow of time with the causal structure of the spacetime.

Abstract:A new definition of entropy is introduced using a model that simulates an expanding space-time compatible with the fundamental principle of cosmology. The entropy is obtained by mean of a state function that measures the variation of the space-time normal curvature, from a highly compressed space to a lower compressed space. The defined entropy leads to work out a new understanding of the earliest conditions that last for a period estimated to 380 000 years after the Big Bang. It leads to understand via a short period of inflation the process that generates the uniform distribution of matter and energy at the surface of the last scattering. It involves gravitational singularities in a process of gradual decompression propitious to the incubation of matter recombination, and it allows to trace back gravity origin.

Abstract:Gravity is derived from an entropic action coupling matter fields with geometry. The fundamental idea is to relate the metric of Lorentzian spacetime to a density matrix. The matter fields curve spacetime, defining a metric induced by the matter fields. The entropic action is the quantum relative entropy between the metric of spacetime and the metric induced by the matter fields. The modified Einstein equations obtained reduce to the Einstein equations in the regime of low coupling. To simplify the theory, exclusively scalar matter fields are considered. This theoretical framework can be extended in different directions, for instance by including fermionic matter fields and gauge fields. A canonical quantization of this field theory could bring new insights into quantum gravity.

We provide an analytical and numerical investigation of this model for initial two-mode squeezed thermal states and show that the entropy production rate strongly depends on the two considered types of coupling between the modes.

An effective description of the instability of coherent states of gravitons in string theory

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a coherent state of closed type II string gravitons within the framework of the Steepest Entropy Ascent Quantum Thermodynamics, an effective model where the quantum evolution is driven by a maximal increase of entropy. We find that by perturbing the pure coherent state of gravitons by the presence of other coherent fields in the string spectrum, there exists conditions upon which the system undergoes decoherence by reaching thermodynamical equilibrium. Following the proposal by Dvali, et al., this suggests the instability of the classical dS space. We identify the time scale it takes the system to reach equilibrium consisting of a mixed state of fields in the string spectrum and compare it with the quantum-break time. Also we find that in such final state the quantum-break time seems to be larger than the classical break-time, in agreement with the Swampland conjectures about the dS solution in string theory.

Abstract:We show that a dynamical spacetime generates entanglement between modes of a quantum field. Conversely, the entanglement encodes information concerning the underlying spacetime structure, which hints at the prospect of applications of this observation to cosmology. Here we illustrate this point by way of an analytically exactly soluble example, that of a scalar quantum field on a two-dimensional asymptotically flat Robertson-Walker expanding spacetime. We explicitly calculate the entanglement in the far future, for a quantum field residing in the vacuum state in the distant past. In this toy universe, it is possible to fully reconstruct the parameters of the cosmic history from the entanglement entropy.

Abstract:Innovations in scholarly communication have resulted in changing roles for authors, publishers and libraries. Traditional roles are disappearing and players are actively seeking or reluctantly assuming new roles. Library roles are changing as they become involved in building and indexing electronic (e-) repositories and support new modes of e-research. A library-run service, the SPIRES particle physics databases, has not only weathered, but also lead, many of the transitions that have shaped the landscape of epublishing and e-research. This has been possible through an intense and in-depth partnership with its user community. The strategies used and lessons learned can help other libraries craft cost-effective roles in this new environment.

Stochastic inflation and entropy bound in de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:We analyze the entropy behavior of the de Sitter spacetime during the inflationary phase. A cosmological horizon in de Sitter spacetime that constrains the causally accessible region of an observer exhibits thermal properties analogous to the event horizon of a black hole. According to the principles of holography, the entropy within a causally connected region for an observer is limited by its boundary. This entropy bound is violated during the late inflation stage. To address the issue of entropy bound violations from a quantum information perspective, we adopted a stochastic approach to cosmic inflation. We consider Shannon entropy of the probability distribution of the inflaton field, which shows the same behavior as the entanglement entropy of a Hubble-size region in stochastic inflation. Adopting the volume-weighted probability distribution for the inflaton field, we show a meaningful entropy behavior in the de Sitter spacetime.

Abstract:As previously demonstrated, the entropy production -- a key quantity characterizing the irreversibility of thermodynamic processes -- is related to generation of correlations between degrees of freedom of the system and its thermal environment. This raises the question of whether such correlations are of a classical or quantum nature, namely, whether they are accessible through local measurements on the correlated degrees of freedom. We address this problem by considering fermionic and bosonic Gaussian systems. We show that for fermions the entropy production is mostly quantum due to the parity superselection rule which restricts the set of physically allowed measurements to projections on the Fock states, thus significantly limiting the amount of classically accessible correlations. In contrast, in bosonic systems a much larger amount of correlations can be accessed through Gaussian measurements. Specifically, while the quantum contribution may be important at low temperatures, in the high temperature limit the entropy production corresponds to purely classical position-momentum correlations. Our results demonstrate an important difference between fermionic and bosonic systems regarding the existence of a quantum-to-classical transition in the microscopic formulation of the entropy production. They also show that entropy production can be mainly caused by quantum correlations even in the weak coupling limit, which admits a description in terms of classical rate equations for state populations, as well as in the low particle density limit, where the transport properties of both bosons and fermions converge to those of classical particles.
