Abstract:We present TDS Simulator, a new software tool aimed at modelling thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) experiments. TDS is a widely used technique for quantifying key characteristics of hydrogen-material interactions, such as diffusivity and trapping. However, interpreting the output of TDS experiments is non-trivial and requires appropriate post-processing tools. This work introduces the first software tool capable of simulating TDS curves for arbitrary choices of material parameters and hydrogen trap characteristics, using the primary hydrogen diffusion and trapping models (Oriani, McNabb-Foster). Moreover, TDS Simulator contains a specific functionality for loading experimental TDS data and conducting the inverse calibration of a selected transport model, providing automatic estimates of the density and binding energy of each hydrogen trap type in the material. In its first version, TDS Simulator is provided as a MATLAB App, which is made freely available to the community and provides a simple graphical user interface (GUI) to make use of TDS Simulator straightforward. As reported in the present manuscript, the outputs of TDS Simulator have been extensively validated against literature data. Demonstrations of automatic determination of trap characteristics from experimental data through the optimisation tool are also provided. The present work enables an efficient and straightforward characterisation of hydrogen-material characteristics relevant to multiple applications, from nuclear fusion to the development of hydrogen-compatible materials for the hydrogen economy. Abstract:A system consisting of a thermal desorption unit (TDU) and micro thermal desorption tubes (μTD-tubes, 1.4 mm I.D., 10mg Tenax TA) for fast desorption of analytes was developed for the efficient combination of hyper fast gas chromatography with thermal desorption. The fast desorption is achieved by a significantly reduced thermal mass compared to conventional thermal desorption tubes. Therefore, extremely fast heating and cooling cycles are possible. Proof of concept measurements combining the new setup with a flow-field thermal gradient gas chromatograph (FF-TG-GC) and FID detection show good precision and linearity with R2≥0.995 in the analysis of an n-alkane mix (C8-C20). Thermal desorption occurs within 12s. The impact of reduced μTD-tube dimensions on desorption time, full width at half maximum (FWHM), breakthrough volumes, tube flow rates ergo linear velocities, porosity and back pressure is discussed.
Development and Validation of a Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy System for Hot Gas Flow and Small-Scale Flame Measurement

Abstract:TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) is an important gas analysis method that can be employed to obtain characteristic parameters non-invasively by the infrared absorption spectra of tracer molecules such as CH4, H2O and O2. In this study, a portable H2O-based TDLAS system with a dual optical path was developed with the aim of assessing the combustion characteristics of flammable gases. Firstly, a calculation method of gas characteristics including temperature and velocity combining absorption spectra and a HITRAN database was provided. Secondly, to calibrate and validate this TDLAS system precisely, a pressure vessel and a shock tube were introduced innovatively to generate static or steady flow fields with preset constant temperatures, pressures, or velocities. Static tests within environment pressures up to 2 MPa and steady flow field tests with temperatures up to 1600 K and flow velocities up to 950 m/s were performed for verification. It was proved that this system can provide an accurate values for high temperature and velocity gas flows. Finally, an experimental investigation of CH4/air flames was conducted to test the effectiveness of the system when applied to small diffusion flames. This TDLAS system gave satisfactory flame temperature and velocity data owing to the dual optical path design and high frequency scanning, which compensated for scale effects and pulsation of the flame. This work demonstrates a valuable new approach to thermal hazard analysis in specific environments.

Abstract:Calorespirometry is the simultaneous analysis of the rate of heat emission (Rq), O2 consumption (RO2) and CO2 production (RCO2) by living systems such as tissues or organism cultures. The analysis provides useful knowledge about thermodynamic parameters relevant for e.g. biotechnology where parameter based yield maximization (fermentation) is relevant. The determination of metabolism related heat emission is easy and normally done by a calorimeter. However, measuring the amount of consumed O2 and produced CO2 can be more challenging, as additional preparation or instrumentation might be needed. Therefore, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) was investigated as an alternative approach for respirometric analysis in order to facilitate the data collection procedure. The method determines by a spectroscopic laser non-invasively CO2 and O2 gas concentration changes in the respective vial headspaces. The gathered growth data from Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultured in two different scarce media was used to compute respiratory quotient (RQ) and calorespirometric ratios (CRCO2 [Rq/RCO2], CRO2 [Rq/RO2]). A comparison of the computed (experimental) values (for RQ, CRCO2 and CRO2) with values reported in the literature confirmed the appropriateness of TDLAS in calorespirometric studies. Thus, it could be demonstrated that TDLAS is a well-performing and convenient way to evaluate non-invasively respiratory rates during calorespirometric studies. Therefore, the technique is definitively worth to be investigated further for its potential use in research and in diverse productive environments.
Development and Metrological Characterization of a Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) Spectrometer for Simultaneous Absolute Measurement of Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor

Abstract:Simultaneous detection of two analytes, carbon dioxide (CO 2 )and water vapor (H 2 O), has been realized using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with a single distributed feedback diode laser at 2.7 μm. The dynamic range of the spectrometer is extended from the low parts per million to the percentage range using two gas cells, a single-pass cell with 0.77 m, and a Herriott-type multipass cell with 76 m path length. Absolute measurements were carried out, i.e., amount fractions of the analytes were calculated based on previously determined spectral line parameters, without the need for an instrument calibration using gas standards. A thorough metrological characterization of the spectrometer is presented. We discuss traceability of all parameters used for amount fraction determination and provide a comprehensive uncertainty assessment. Relative expanded uncertainties ( k = 2, 95% confidence level) of the measured amount fractions are shown to be in the 2-3% range for both analytes. Minimum detectable amount fractions are 0.16 μmol/mol for CO 2 and 1.1 μmol/mol for H 2 0 for 76 m path length and 5 s averaging time. This corresponds to normalized detection limits of 27 μmol/mol m Hz _1/2 for CO 2 and 221 μmol/mol m Hz −1/2 for H 2 O. Precision of the spectrometer, determined using Allan variance analysis, is 3.3 nmol/mol for CO 2 and 21 nmol/mol for H 2 O. The spectrometer has been validated using reference gas mixtures with known CO 2 and H 2 O amount fractions. An application example of the absolute TDLAS spectrometer as a reference instrument to validate other sensors is also presented.

Abstract:For the gas concentration measurement system based on the tunable diode-laser absorption technique spectroscopy(TDLAS),a state-space strategy has been proposed.The proposed strategy formulates the gas concentration distribution through the state equations,and measures the absorption spectroscopy distribution through observation equations.Further,it coherently treats the uncertainties of the statistical model of the system and the noisy nature of the measurement data.The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated with favorable results.

Abstract:Here is described an instrument for ammonia determination utilizing near-infrared laser absorption suitable for high-temperature applications. The laser wavelength is scanned across the ammonia absorption line at 1.512 & mu;m and wavelength-modulation spectroscopy is simultaneously performed to provide robust and accurate measurements. The thermal effects and beam-steering effects are highlighted in the design. An aluminum baffle is employed to alleviate the adverse impact of elevated temperature on the electronic components and evaluated by an infrared thermographic camera. The beam-steering effects were quantitatively assessed through a combination of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and ray tracing analysis. Reference standards from 1 to 20 ppm ammonia were used to verify the system performance. The determined ammonia concentrations exhibit good consistency with the reference values, as demonstrated by a coefficient of determination (R-2) of 0.999. Furthermore, a detection limit of 0.02 ppm was achieved using an integration time of 60 s. Pprecision of 0.11 ppm was achieved using 1 s time resolution.

Abstract:Many applications require diagnostics that can quantify the distribution of chemical gas species and gas temperature along a single line-of-sight, which is challenging in process environments with limited optical access. To this end, we present an approach that combines time-of-flight Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) with Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) to scan individual gas molecular transition lines. This method is applicable in situations where scattering objects are distributed along the beam path, such as solid fuel combustion, or when dealing with multiple gas volumes separated by weakly reflecting windows. The approach is demonstrated through simulation studies and an initial experimental proof of concept for separated gas volumes.

Abstract:This work illustrates how the Tandem micro-Reactor (TMR), when interfaced to a GC-MS, facilitates the rapid characterization of virtually any material: gases, liquids and solids. A TMR has two independently controlled micro-reactors in series. Each micro-reactor has three heating modes: isothermal (up to 900 degrees C), multi-linear (e.g., 100-400 degrees C at 20 degrees C/min) and distinct temperature steps (e.g., 100 degrees C, 200 degrees C, etc.). The TMR can be used for both Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) and detailed component analysis. Three examples illustrate how the TMR-GC-MS can be configured to differentiate or identify virtually any material. (1) Lignin, oak, bagasse and cellulose are easily differentiated using EGA-MS - each material is analyzed directly by simply weighing the sample (<75 mesh) into the sample cup. (2,3) The temperature dependence of ethanol and methanol transformations to ethylene and propylene, respectively, are presented using an online, real-time configuration. The ethylene transformation is also performed using a series of ethanol injections at distinct catalyst temperatures. Lastly, regeneration of the catalyst's surface is performed in-situ, which improves laboratory productive as well as elevating the precision of the data. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) technology is an ideal method to detect trace gas quantitatively based on the wavelength tunable character of diode laser. It can obtain the absorption spectroscopy in the characteristic absorption region. It can be used for trace gas detection and industrial combustion control due to its advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, quick respond and on-line measurement. Simultaneous measurement of O(2) concentration and temperature in combustion environment has great significance for improving combustion efficiency and reducing pollutants emission. A pair of O(2) absorption lines location at 13150.19cm(-1) and 13160.34cm(-1) was selected for measuring. Absorption line in 13150.19 cm(-1) is selected for concentration measurement because of bigger line-strength. By detection of the background absorption simultaneously, the effecting of the O2 in air atmosphere can been remove. O(2) concentration and temperature is simultaneously measured on high temperature test bench in laboratory based on TDLAS. Experimental results show that when concentration of O(2) higher than 2.5%, within the temperature range from 373K to 723K, the calculation error of concentration and temperature were below 4% the results coincide with calibration value. Simultaneous measuring of O(2) concentration and temperature has been done on an oil burner, the result proves that this method can be used on combustion environment.

Abstract:Recent advances in soil probe technology for the detection of organic compounds emanating from subsurface media have seen the emergence of thermal techniques to enhance qualitative data obtained during the surveying of contaminated sites. A new portable sampling system has been developed that combines an electrically heated probe tip with three adsorbent tubes. The T.A.S.G. (Thermally Assisted Soil Gas) probe eliminates the need for steam or heated air systems and the transportation of bulky analytical apparatus to the field. This modified approach has several advantages over existing techniques, primarily in yielding additional qualitative and quantitative data, facilitating options for analysis, provides replicate samples for method development, determination of the sampling precision of the analytical results and archiving of compliance samples. Initial results using a prototype probe and sampling temperatures between 50 and 60°C have shown that not only does this technique enhance qualitative data for compounds already present but can also indicate the presence of compounds that would not have been observed at lower temperatures.

Abstract:Thermal desorption (TD) coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) is a simple alternative that overcomes the main drawbacks of the solvent extraction-based method: long extraction times, high sample manipulation, and large amounts of solvent waste. This work describes the optimization of TD-GC/MS for the measurement of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulate phase. The performance of the method was tested by Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1649b urban dust and compared with the conventional method (Soxhlet extraction-GC/MS), showing a better recovery (mean of 97%), precision (mean of 12%), and accuracy (±25%) for the determination of 14 EPA PAHs. Furthermore, other 15 nonpriority PAHs were identified and quantified using their relative response factors (RRFs). Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for the quantification of PAHs in real 8 h-samples (PM 10 ), demonstrating its capability for determination of these compounds in short-term monitoring.

Abstract:The technique based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been developed to realize the real-time and dynamic measurement of the combustion-generated pollutants. In this paper the fundamental of the measurement using TDLAS is presented. By setting up the mathematic model of CO2 absorption line at 6359.97 cm-1 and making use of the parameters from the high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database, the effects of scanning step length, temperature, pressure and absorbance random error on the gas concentration measurement are discussed. The minimum detectivity as a function of temperature and pressure is also analyzed. The result can be useful for the practical application and further study.

Abstract:The thermal desorption (TD) technique is widely employed in modern mass spectrometry to facilitate the detection of non-volatile analytes. In this study, we developed a compact TD device based on a small resistance wire and coupled it with a self-aspirating corona discharge ionization (CDI) source to conduct direct MS analysis of various liquid and solid samples. Due to its small size and low heat capacity, the temperature of the TD module can be flexibly and rapidly modulated by controlling the power sequence. Multiple heating modes, including pulse heating (PH), isothermal heating, and step heating (SH), are realized and characterized, and then applied for the detection of different real samples. In particular, the PH mode is suitable for the simultaneous detection of multiple components in samples with relatively simple matrices, while the SH mode is capable of component separation. In addition, the sensitivity and quantitative capability of the TD-CDI system for DEP solutions were tested, showing acceptable stability with a relative standard deviation of about 6.7% and a detection limit of 0.088 ng. Overall, the developed TD-CDI system provides a simple, convenient, and versatile tool for direct mass spectrometry analysis of real samples.

Abstract:A tomography system is presented that uses wavelength-scanned direct absorption of two transitions of a target species (NH3 in the demonstration experiment) to determine the distributions of gas concentration and temperature. The absorption measurements are performed simultaneously from four platforms that each rotate a beam from a single laser through an 11 degrees arc, acquiring a data set from all four laser platforms in 100 ms to enable observation of dynamic flow events. The laser is wavelength scanned through two absorption transitions with different internal energy producing two sets of equations with species mole fraction and temperature as independent variables. The mole fraction and temperature distributions are reconstructed using the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) for this set of incomplete projections. A numerical simulation is used to evaluate the measurement accuracy for measurements of an NH3 mixture escaping from an open pipe. This phantom distribution is then realized in the laboratory and the measurement strategy is demonstrated using a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurement using a single laser near 1.5 mu m to scan adjacent transitions in NH3. The reconstruction of NH3 concentration and gas temperature is compared with independently determined values to illustrate the fidelity of the tomographically reconstructed distributions for the NH3 mole fraction assuming a fixed temperature and for unknown mole fraction and temperature. Potential extensions of this research in the future include evaluation of other reconstruction algorithms and investigation of the dynamic distribution of various gases for combustion diagnostics.

Abstract:Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) is a non-intrusive method of measurement, which has lots of advantages, such as real-time, fast response, high sensitivity, easy operation, harsh condition applicability and so on. In this paper, the 7173.781201 and 7199.37761 cm(-1) line pair of water vapor were selected for the temperature measurement of the flat flame burner. In order to observe the non-uniform temperature distribution, the Fourier-Hankel transform in the inverse Abel transform was used to convert the integrated temperature, which got by TDLAS, into temperature field.

Abstract:Measuring the temperature in vacuum environment is more complex than in atmospheric environment. For example, high vacuum will cause the thermocouple sensor surface desorption, and the mechanism of heat transfer is also different. Therefore, there are some uncertainties if the thermocouple is used to measure the gas temperature in vacuum condition. In the present paper, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is employed to measure the gas temperature and also explore the application prospect of TDLAS temperature measurement technology in vacuum environment. During the thermal vacuum experiments, the vacuum gas cell is immersed in the thermostatic bath, and the gas temperature is determined by TDLAS. Meanwhile, a standard Pt-resistance is used to measure the thermostatic bath temperature. The results show that the temperatures of the gas and thermostatic bath are highly consistent with each other, and the difference between the two temperatures is less than +/- 0.2 degrees C when the thermostatic bath is stable.

Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy is a robust method for simultaneous measurements of temperature and gas species. Different from commercial detectors integrated with photodiode receivers and amplifiers as the detecting system, a custom-made photoelectric detecting system comprised of Ge detectors and separated amplifiers was designed. First, Ge detectors received optical power from laser beams and then converted it into electrical current signals. The trans-impedance amplifiers were used to convert the current signals to voltage signals. The second stage amplifiers further amplified the voltage signals. All amplifiers that integrated the electronic circuits were packed in a portable case. Finally, the amplified voltage signals were received by data acquisition card. In this way, detectors could be arranged more compact and are easier to facilitate expandability. In addition, absorption data were reconstructed using twice adaptive algebraic reconstruction technique (AART) algorithm. During the reconstruction, after obtaining the temperature distribution through AART algorithm, AART algorithm was adopted for the second time for H2O concentration distribution. This system was validated with measurements of one-dimensional average temperature in a high temperature tube furnace and the system combined with twice adaptive algebraic algorithm demonstrated in a square flow field containing McKenna burners for simultaneous measurements of temperature and H2O distribution. The results indicated the viability and potential of this system combined with twice adaptive algebraic algorithm for sensitive temperature and H2O distribution tomography. Abstract:A multi-component Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) gas analyzer with a low spectral resolution (8cm-1) is described in this paper. The hardware of this analyzer is consisting of a rugged Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), an uncooled pyroelectric Deuterated L-Alanine TriGlycine Sulfate (DLATGS) detector, a glass body long-path gas cell and relevant sampling devices. The transplantable software and algorithms include the building of spectral library from the free sources such as EPA, NIST, HITRAN etc, identification of spectrum components and a modified classical least square regression with automatic baseline compensation. In order to validate this system, we implemented a continuous on-line experiment using the 55 μmol·mol-1 methane and 28 μmol·mol-1 nitrous oxide standard mixtures. The experimental results show this low resolution analyzer has accuracy and robust analysis abilities. The description in this paper is helpful to facilitate the development of a FTIR multi-component gas analyzer.
TDL Absorption Sensors for Gas Temperature and Concentrations in a High-Pressure Entrained-Flow Coal Gasifier

Abstract:We report the first tunable diode laser (TDL) absorption measurements for gas temperature and species concentrations in a pilot-scale, high-pressure, entrained-flow, oxygen-blown, slagging coal gasifier with pressures up to 18 atm and temperatures to 1800 K. Three locations in the gasifier flow were investigated: (1) the reactor core, (2) the exit of the reactor where a water spray quenches the reaction products (pre-quench), and (3) in the gasifier product stream before particulate clean-up (post-quench). Gas temperature was measured by three pairs of H2O transitions with distinct temperature dependence at all three locations using five distributed feedback (DFB) lasers near 1.4 μm. CO, CO2 and H2O concentrations were measured at the post-quench location using DFB lasers near 2.3 μm, 2.0 μm and 1.4 μm, respectively. Fixed-wavelength, 1f-normalized, wavelength-modulation-spectroscopy with second-harmonic detection (WMS-2f) was used for all the measurements. Usable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) > 10 was achieved with one second averaging even at gasifier conditions with large particulate loading where the non-absorption transmission loss was >99.99% from light scattering and the thermal emission was intense. The work demonstrates the capability of TDL sensors to monitor transient changes in gas temperature providing a potentially valuable control sensor for gasifier performance. In addition, measurements of CO, CO2 and H2O in the gasifier product stream showed good promise for monitoring the syngas heating value. The potential advantages of using higher WMS harmonics under high-pressure conditions were also investigated.
