Abstract:Recent works suggest that, in multiplanetary systems, a close-in exoplanet can sometimes avoid becoming tidally locked to its host star if it is captured into a secular spin-orbit resonance with a companion planet. In such a resonance, the planet remains at a sub-synchronous spin rate and an appreciable obliquity (the planet's spin-orbit misalignment angle). However, many of these works have only considered planets with fluid-like rheologies. Recent observations suggest that planets up to a few Earth masses may be rocky and thus may have an appreciable rigidity. In this work, we study the spin-orbit dynamics of such rigid planets using a linear dissipative tidal model and not enforcing principal axis rotation about the body's shortest principal axis. We identify a new class of spin-orbit resonances when the planet spins at twice its orbital frequency. These resonances exist at nonzero obliquity and spontaneously excite non-principal-axis rotation upon resonance capture. While these resonances eventually disappear as tidal dissipation damps the obliquity to zero (and the body returns to principal-axis rotation), they still modify the spin evolutionary history of the planet. Such resonances may enhance the prevalence of secular spin-orbit resonances in exoplanetary systems.

Nutation-orbit resonances: The origin of the chaotic rotation of Hyperion and the barrel instability

Abstract:While numerous planetary and asteroid satellites show evidence for non-trivial rotation states, none are as emblematic as Hyperion, which has long been held as the most striking example of chaotic spin-orbit evolution in the Solar System. Nevertheless, an analytically tractable theory of the full 3D spin-orbit dynamics of Hyperion has not been developed. We derive the Hamiltonian for a spinning axisymmetric satellite in the gravitational potential of a planet without assuming planar or principal axis rotation and without averaging over the spin period. Using this model, we demonstrate the emergence of resonances between the nutation and orbital frequencies that act as the primary drivers of the spin dynamics. This analysis reveals that, contrary to long-held belief, Hyperion is not tumbling chaotically. Instead, it lies near or in a nutation-orbit resonance that is first-order in eccentricity, allowing it to rotate quasi-regularly. The most reliable observations are consistent with either nonchaotic motion or chaos that is orders of magnitude smaller than originally claimed. A separate phenomenon, the so-called barrel instability, is shown to be related to a different set of nutation-orbit resonances that generalize the planar spin-orbit resonances. Finally, we show that changes in spin states over long timescales are best understood by considering chaotic diffusion of quasi-conserved quantities.

Dynamics of Stellar Spin Driven by Planets Undergoing Lidov-Kozai Migration: Paths to Spin-Orbit Misalignment

Abstract:Many exoplanetary systems containing hot Jupiters (HJs) exhibit significant misalignment between the spin axes of the host stars and the orbital angular momentum axes of the planets ("spin-orbit misalignment"). High-eccentricity migration involving Lidov-Kozai oscillations of the planet's orbit induced by a distant perturber is a possible channel for producing such misaligned HJ systems. Previous works have shown that the dynamical evolution of the stellar spin axis during the high-$e$ migration plays a dominant role in generating the observed spin-orbit misalignment. Numerical studies have also revealed various patterns of the evolution of the stellar spin axis leading to the final misalignment. Here we develop an analytic theory to elucidate the evolution of spin-orbit misalignment during the Lidov-Kozai migration of planets in stellar binaries. Secular spin-orbit resonances play a key role in the misalignment evolution. We include the effects of short-range forces and tidal dissipation, and categorize the different possible paths to spin-orbit misalignment as a function of various physical parameters (e.g. planet mass and stellar rotation period). We identify five distinct spin-orbit evolution paths and outcomes, only two of which are capable of producing retrograde orbits. We show that these paths to misalignment and the outcomes depend only on two dimensionless parameters, which compare the stellar spin precession frequency with the rate of change of the planet's orbital axis, and the Lidov-Kozai oscillation frequency. Our analysis reveals a number of novel phenomena for the stellar spin evolution, ranging from bifurcation, adiabatic advection, to fully chaotic evolution of spin-orbit angles.

Abstract:We show that physical scattering observables for compact spinning objects in general relativity can depend on additional degrees of freedom in the spin tensor beyond those described by the spin vector alone. The impulse, spin kick, and leading-order waveforms exhibit such a nontrivial dependence. A signal of this additional structure is the change in the magnitude of the spin vector under conservative Hamiltonian evolution, similar to our previous studies in electrodynamics. These additional degrees of freedom describe dynamical mass multipoles of compact objects and decouple for black holes. We also show that the conservative impulse, spin kick and change of the additional degrees of freedom are encoded in the eikonal phase.

Gyroscope deviation from geodesic motion: quasiresonant oscillations on a circular orbit

Abstract:General relativistic spin-orbit interaction leads to the quasiresonant oscillation of the gyroscope mass center along the orbital normal. The beating amplitude does not include the speed of light and equals the ratio of the intrinsic momentum of the gyroscope to its orbital momentum. The modulation frequency equals the angular velocity of the geodetic precession that prevents the oscillation from resonance. The oscillation represents the precession of the gyroscope orbital momentum. Within an acceptable time the oscillation amplitude reaches the values that are amenable to being analyzed experimentally. Taking into account the source oblateness decreases the beating amplitude and increases the modulation frequency by the factor that is equal to the ratio of the quadrupole precession velocity to the geodetic precession velocity. The period of the quadrupole precession turns out to be a quite sufficient time to form a measurable amplitude of the oscillation.

Abstract:In many exoplanetary systems with `hot Jupiters', it is observed that the spin axes of host stars are highly misaligned to planetary orbital axes. In this study, a possible channel is investigated for producing such a misalignment under a hierarchical three-body system where the evolution of stellar spin is subjected to the gravitational torque induced from the planet inside Kozai--Lidov (KL) resonance. In particular, two special configurations are explored in detail. The first one corresponds to the configuration with planets at KL fixed points, and the second one corresponds to the configurations with planets moving on KL librating cycles. When the planet is located at the KL fixed point, the corresponding Hamiltonian model is of one degree of freedom and there are three branches of libration centres for stellar spin. When the planet is moving on KL cycles, the technique of Poincaré section is taken to reveal global structures of stellar spin in phase space. To understand the complex structures, perturbative treatments are adopted to study rotational dynamics. It shows that analytical structures in phase portraits under the resonant model can agree well with numerical structures arising in Poincaré sections, showing that the complicated dynamics of stellar spin are governed by the primary resonance under the unperturbed Hamiltonian model in combination with the 2:1 (high-order and/or secondary) spin-orbit resonances.

A Note on the Spin–Orbit, Spin–Spin, and Spin–Orbit–Spin Resonances in the Binary Minor Planet System

Abstract:By considering a varying mutual orbit between the two bodies in a binary minor planet system, modified models for the spin–orbit, spin–spin, and spin–orbit–spin resonances are given. For the spin–orbit resonances, our study shows that the resonance center changes with the mass ratio and the mutual distance between the two bodies, and the size of the body in the resonance. The 1:1, 3:2, and 1:2 resonances are taken as examples to show the results. For the spin–spin and spin–orbit–spin resonances, our studies show that the resonance center changes with the rotation states of the two minor planets. The 1:1 spin–spin resonance and the 1:2:1 spin–orbit–spin resonance are discussed in detail. Simple analytical criteria are given to identify the resonance centers, and numerical simulations were ran in order to verify the analytical results.

Abstract:The long-term relaxation of rotating, spherically symmetric globular clusters is investigated through an extension of the orbit averaged Chandrasekhar non-resonant formalism. A comparison is made with the long-term evolution of the distribution function in action space, measured from averages of sets of $N$-body simulations up to core collapse. The impact of rotation on in-plane relaxation is found to be weak. In addition, we observe a clear match between theoretical predictions and $N$-body measurements. For the class of rotating models considered, we find no strong gravo-gyro catastrophe accelerating core collapse. Both kinetic theory and simulations predict a reshuffling of orbital inclinations from overpopulated regions to underpopulated ones. This trend accelerates as the amount of rotation is increased. Yet, for orbits closer to the rotational plane, the non-resonant prediction does not reproduce numerical measurements. We argue that this mismatch stems from these orbits' coherent interactions, which are not captured by the non-resonant formalism that only addresses local deflections.

Abstract:In this letter we work out the secular precession of the spin of a gyroscope in geodesic motion around a central mass in the framework of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati multidimensional gravity model. Such an effect, which depends on the mass of the central body and on the orbit radius of the gyroscope, contrary to the precessions of the orbital elements of the orbit of a test body, is far too small to be detected.

Dynamical structures associated with high-order and secondary resonances in the spin-orbit problem

Abstract:In our Solar system, spin-orbit resonances are common under Sun--planet, planet--satellite and binary asteroid configurations. In this work, high-order and secondary spin-orbit resonances are investigated by taking numerical and analytical approaches. Poincaré sections as well as two types of dynamical maps are produced, showing that there are complicated structures in the phase space. To understand numerical structures, we adopt the theory of perturbative treatments to formulate resonant Hamiltonian for describing spin-orbit resonances. Results show that there is an excellent agreement between analytical and numerical structures. It is concluded that the main V-shape structure arising in the parameter space $(\dot\theta,\alpha)$ is sculpted by the synchronous primary resonance, those minute structures inside the V-shape region are dominated by secondary resonances and those structures outside the V-shape region are governed by high-order resonances. At last, the analytical approach is applied to binary asteroid systems (65803) Didymos and (4383) Suruga to reveal their phase-space structures.

Abstract:We present an instructive way to introduce the subject of resonance using a typical spring-mass system without damping. In contrast to the standard approach found in most textbooks, here we propose a way to extend the lectures from common translational systems to rotating ones. In the latter case, particular attention is paid to the role of the variable centripetal force. The students will find analytical solutions of the simplest possible ordinary differential equations of motion and see that the natural frequency strongly depends on the rotation speed, the latter being a simple vector sum. The analysis reveals that always the resultant ground force is harmonic. In order to depict the significance in the influence of rotation on natural frequency, we present an imaginary 'antigravity' world in which the aforementioned dependency is absent.

Mean Motion Resonances in Exoplanet Systems: An Investigation Into Nodding Behavior

Abstract:Motivated by the large number of extrasolar planetary systems that are near mean motion resonances, this paper explores a related type of dynamical behavior known as "nodding". Here, the resonance angle of a planetary system executes libration (oscillatory motion) for several cycles, circulates for one or more cycles, and then enters once again into libration. This type of complicated dynamics can affect our interpretation of observed planetary systems that are in or near mean motion resonance. This work shows that planetary systems in (near) mean motion resonance can exhibit nodding behavior, and outlines the portion of parameter space where it occurs. This problem is addressed using both full numerical integrations of the planetary systems and via model equations obtained through expansions of the disturbing function. In the latter approach, we identify the relevant terms that allow for nodding. The two approaches are in agreement, and show that nodding often occurs when a small body is in an external mean motion resonance with a larger planet. As a result, the nodding phenomenon can be important for interpreting observations of transit timing variations, where the existence of smaller bodies is inferred through their effects on larger, observed transiting planets. For example, in actively nodding planetary systems, both the amplitude and frequency of the transit timing variations depend on the observational time window.

Arbitrary Controlled Re-Orientation of a Spinning Body by Evolving its Tensor of Inertia

Abstract:Bodies with the nonspherical tensor of inertia exhibit a variety of rotational motion patterns, including chaotic motion, stable periodic (quasi-periodic) rotation, unstable rotation around the direction close to the body's second principal axis, featuring a well-known tennis-racket (also known as Garriott-Dzhanibekov) effect -- series of seemingly spontaneous 180 degrees flips. These patterns are even more complex if the body's tensor of inertia (TOI) is changing with time. Changing a body's TOI has been discussed recently as a tool to perform controllable Garriott-Dzhanibekov flips and similar maneuvers. In this work, the optimal control of the TOI of the body (spacecraft, or any other device that admits free rotation in three dimensions) is used as a means to perform desirable re-orientations of a body with respect to its angular velocity. Using the spherical TOI as the initial and final point of the maneuver, we optimize the parameters of the maneuver to achieve and stabilize the desired orientation of the body's principal axes with respect to spin angular velocity. It appears that such a procedure allows for finding arbitrarily complex maneuver trajectories of a spinning body. In particular, intermediate axis instability can be used to break the alignment of the body's principal axis and the axis of rotation. Such maneuvers do not require utilization of propellants and could be straightforwardly used for attitude control of a spin-stabilized spacecraft. The capabilities of such a method of angular maneuvering are demonstrated in numerical simulations.

Abstract:We study the pitch attitude dynamics of an asymmetric magnetic spacecraft in an almost circular orbit under the influence of a gravity gradient torque. The spacecraft is also subject to the influence of three perturbations: the small eccentricity of the elliptical orbit, a small magnetic torque due to the interaction with the Earth's magnetic field, and a small aerodynamic viscous drag generated by the action of the Earth's atmosphere. Under these perturbations, we show that the pitch motion exhibits heteroclinic chaotic behavior by means of the Melnikov method. This method gives us an analytical criterion for the existence of heteroclinic chaos in terms of the system parameters. This analytical criterion is confirmed numerically with good agreement. In spite of the chaos generated by the perturbations, we also find, by means of Poincaré surfaces of section that some periodic pitch motions persist in the perturbed system with the same period as the orbital motion of the spacecraft. Finally, we carry out a bifurcation analysis of these periodic motions by numerical continuation of them in terms of the perturbation parameters.

Abstract:About a dozen exoplanetary systems have been discovered with three or more planets participating in a sequence of mean-motion resonances. The unique and complex architectures of these so-called "resonant chains" motivate efforts to characterize their planets holistically. In this work, we perform a comprehensive exploration of the spin-axis dynamics of planets in resonant chains. Planetary spin states are closely linked with atmospheric dynamics and habitability and are thus especially relevant to resonant chains like TRAPPIST-1, which hosts several temperate planets. Considering a set of observed resonant chains, we calculate the equilibrium states of the planetary axial tilts ("obliquities"). We show that high-obliquity states exist for ∼60% of planets in our sample, and many of these states can be stable in the presence of tidal dissipation. Using case studies of two observed systems (Kepler-223 and TOI-1136), we demonstrate how these high-obliquity states could have been attained during the initial epoch of disk-driven orbital migration that established the resonant orbital architectures. We show that the TRAPPIST-1 planets most likely have zero obliquities, with the possible exception of planet d. Overall, our results highlight that both the orbital and spin states of resonant chains are valuable relics of the early stages of planet formation and evolution.

Non-tidal Coupling of the Orbital and Rotational Motions of Extended Bodies

Abstract:The orbital motions and spin-axis rotations of extended bodies are traditionally considered to be coupled only by tidal mechanisms. The orbit-spin coupling hypothesis supplies an additional mechanism. A reversing torque on rotating extended bodies is identified. The torque effects an exchange of angular momentum between the reservoirs of the orbital and rotational motions. The axis of the torque is constrained to lie within the equatorial plane of the subject body. Hypothesis testing to date has focused on the response to the putative torque of the Martian atmosphere. Atmospheric global circulation model simulations reveal that an episodic strengthening and weakening of meridional overturning circulations should be observable and is diagnostic in connection with the triggering of Martian planet-encircling dust storms. Spacecraft observations obtained during the earliest days of the 2018 Martian global dust storm document a strong intensification of atmospheric meridional motions as predicted under this hypothesis. We review implications for atmospheric physics, for investigations of planetary orbital evolution with rotational energy dissipation, and for theories of gravitation.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the rotational dynamics of neutrally buoyant axisymmetric particles in a simple shear flow. A custom-built shearing cell and a multi-view shape-reconstruction method are used to obtain direct measurements of the orientation and period of rotation of particles having oblate and prolate shapes (such as spheroids and cylinders) of varying aspect ratios. By systematically changing the viscosity of the fluid, we examine the effect of inertia (which may be originated from either phase) on the dynamical behaviour of these suspended particles up to a particle Reynolds number of approximately one. While no significant effect on the period of rotation is found in this small-inertia regime, a systematic drift among several rotations toward limiting stable orbits is observed. Prolate particles are seen to drift towards the tumbling orbit in the plane of shear, whereas oblate particles are driven either to the tumbling or to the vorticity-aligned spinning orbits, depending on their initial orientation. These results are compared with recent small-inertia asymptotic theories, assessing their range of validity, as well as to numerical simulations in the small-inertia regime for both prolate and oblate particles.

Abstract:Having a massive moon has been considered as a primary mechanism for stabilized planetary obliquity, an example of which being our Earth. This is, however, not always consistent with the exoplanetary cases. This article details the discovery of an alternative mechanism, namely that planets orbiting around binary stars tend to have low spin-axis variations. This is because the large quadrupole potential of the stellar binary could speed up the planetary orbital precession, and detune the system out of secular spin-orbit resonances. Consequently, habitable zone planets around the stellar binaries in low inclination orbits hold higher potential for regular seasonal changes comparing to their single star analogues.

Abstract:In this study, we formulate a set of differential equations for a binary system to describe the secular-tidal evolution of orbital elements, rotational dynamics, and deformation (flattening), under the assumption that one body remains spherical while the other is slightly aspherical throughout the analysis. By applying singular perturbation theory, we analyze the dynamics of both the original and secular equations. Our findings indicate that the secular equations serve as a robust approximation for the entire system, often representing a slow-fast dynamical system. Additionally, we explore the geometric aspects of spin-orbit resonance capture, interpreting it as a manifestation of relaxation oscillations within singularly perturbed systems.
