Abstract:We develop a method for calculating the Lyapunov characteristic exponents of lattice gauge theories. The complete Lyapunov spectrum of SU(2) gauge theory is obtained and Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy is calculated. Rapid convergence with lattice size is found.

Abstract:We extend the inequality of Tomboulis and Yaffe in SU(2) lattice gauge theory (LGT) to SU(N) LGT and to general classical spin systems, by use of reflection positivity. Basically the inequalities guarantee that a system in a box that is sufficiently insensitive to boundary conditions has a non-zero mass gap. We explicitly illustrate the theorem in some solvable models. Strong coupling expansion is then utilized to discuss some aspects of the theorem. Finally a conjecture for exact expression to the off-axis mass gap of the triangular Ising model is presented. The validity of the conjecture is tested in multiple ways.

Abstract:Associated to any finite graph is a closed surface , the boundary of a regular neighbourhood of an embedding of in any three manifold. The surface retracts to the graph, mapping loops on the surface to loops on the graph. The ( SU (2)) character variety of has a symplectic structure and associated Liouville measure; on the other hand, the character variety of carries a natural measure inherited from the Haar measure. Loops on define functions on the character varieties, the Wilson loops . By the works of W. Goldman, L. Jeffrey and J. Weitsman, the formalism of Duistermaat-Heckman applies to the relevant integrals over . We develop a calculus for calculating correlations of Wilson loops on w.r.to the normalised Liouville measure, and present evidence that they approximate—for large graphs—the corresponding integrals over . Lattice field theory involves integrals over ; we present "symplectic" analogues of expressions for partition functions, Wilson loop expectations, etc., in two and three space-time dimensions.

Abstract:We study the entanglement entropy of Hamiltonian SU(2) lattice gauge theory in $2+1$ dimensions on linear plaquette chains and show that the entanglement entropies of both ground and excited states follow Page curves. The transition of the subsystem size dependence of the entanglement entropy from the area law for the ground state to the volume law for highly excited states is found to be described by a universal crossover function. Quantum many-body scars in the middle of the spectrum, which are present in the electric flux truncated Hilbert space, where the gauge theory can be mapped onto an Ising model, disappear when higher electric field representations are included in the Hilbert space basis. This suggests the continuum $(2+1)$-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory does not have such scarred states.

Abstract:Gauge theories with matter fields in various representations play an important role in different branches of physics. Recently, it was proposed that several aspects of the interesting pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors near optimal doping may be explained by an emergent $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry. Around the transition with positive hole-doping, one can construct a $(2+1)-$dimensional $SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled to four adjoint scalar fields which gives rise to a rich phase diagram with a myriad of phases having different broken symmetries. We study the phase diagram of this model on the Euclidean lattice using the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. We find the existence of multiple broken phases as predicted by previous mean field studies. Depending on the quartic couplings, the $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry is broken down either to $U(1)$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ in the perturbative description of the model. We further study the confinement-deconfinement transition in this theory, and find that both the broken phases are deconfining in the range of volumes that we studied. However, there exists a marked difference in the behavior of the Polyakov loop between the two phases.

Abstract:We develop a gauge invariant, Loop-String-Hadron (LSH) based representation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory defined on a general graph consisting of vertices and half-links. Inspired by weak coupling studies, we apply this technique to maximal tree gauge fixing. This allows us to develop a fully gauge fixed representation of the theory in terms of LSH quantum numbers. We explicitly show how the quantum numbers in this formulation directly relate to the variables in the magnetic description. In doing so, we will also explain in detail the way that the Kogut-Susskind formulation, prepotentials, and point splitting, work for general graphs. In the appendix of this work we provide a self-contained exposition of the mathematical details of Hamiltonian pure gauge theories defined on general graphs.

Quantum computation of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with continuous variables

Abstract:We present a quantum computational framework for SU(2) lattice gauge theory, leveraging continuous variables instead of discrete qubits to represent the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space of the gauge fields. We consider a ladder as well as a two-dimensional grid of plaquettes, detailing the use of gauge fixing to reduce the degrees of freedom and simplify the Hamiltonian. We demonstrate how the system dynamics, ground states, and energy gaps can be computed using the continuous-variable approach to quantum computing. Our results indicate that it is feasible to study non-Abelian gauge theories with continuous variables, providing new avenues for understanding the real-time dynamics of quantum field theories.

Abstract:The entanglement entropy of SU(N) lattice gauge theory is studied exactly in 1+1 space-time dimensions and in Migdal-Kadanoff approximation in higher dimensional space. The existence of a non-analytical behavior reminiscent of a phase transition for a characteristic size of the entangled region is demonstrated for higher dimensional theories.

Abstract:In our earlier work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.09334" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09334">arXiv:2311.09334</a>, we introduced a lattice Hamiltonian for Adjoint QCD$_2$ using staggered Majorana fermions. We found the gauge invariant space of states explicitly for the gauge group $\text{SU}(2)$ and used them for numerical calculations of observables, such as the spectrum and the expectation value of the fermion bilinear. In this paper, we carry out a more in-depth study of our lattice model, extending it to any compact and simply-connected gauge group $G$. We show how to find the gauge invariant space of states and use it to study various observables. We also use the lattice model to calculate the mixed 't Hooft anomalies of Adjoint QCD$_2$ for arbitrary $G$. We show that the matrix elements of the lattice Hamiltonian can be expressed in terms of the Wigner 6$j$-symbols of $G$. For $G = \text{SU}(3)$, we perform exact diagonalization for lattices of up to six sites and study the low-lying spectrum, the fermion bilinear condensate, and the string tension. We also show how to write the lattice strong coupling expansion for ground state energies and operator expectation values in terms of the Wigner 6$j$-symbols. For $\text{SU}(3)$ we carry this out explicitly and find good agreement with the exact diagonalizations, and for $\text{SU}(4)$ we give expansions that can be compared with future numerical studies.

Abstract:We calculated the SU(2) gluon propagator in Landau gauge on an anisotropic coarse lattice with the improved action. The standard and improved schemes are used to fix the gauge in this work. Even on the coarse lattice the lattice gluon propagator can be well described by a function of the continuous momentum. The effect of the improved gauge fixing scheme is found not to be apparent. Based on the Marenzoni's model, the mass scale and the anomalous dimension are extracted and can be reasonably extrapolated to the continuum limit with the values α~0.3 and M~600 MeV . We also extract the physical anisotropy ξ from the gluon propagator due to the explicit ξ dependence of the gluon propagator.

Abstract:We discuss general aspects of charge conjugation symmetry in Euclidean lattice field theories, including its dynamical gauging. Our main focus is $O(2) = U(1)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2 $ gauge theory, which we construct using a non-abelian generalization of the Villain formulation via gauging the charge conjugation symmetry of pure $U(1)$ gauge theory. We describe how to construct gauge-invariant non-local operators in a theory with gauged charge conjugation symmetry, and use it to define Wilson and 't Hooft lines as well as non-invertible symmetry operators. Our lattice discretization preserves the higher-group and non-invertible symmetries of $O(2)$ gauge theory, which we explore in detail. In particular, these symmetries give rise to selection rules for extended operators and their junctions, and constrain the properties of the worldvolume degrees of freedom on twist vortices (also known as Alice or Cheshire strings). We propose a phase diagram of the theory coupled to dynamical magnetic monopoles and twist vortices, where the various generalized symmetries are typically only emergent.

Abstract:The Lagrange and Markov spectra have been studied since late 19th century, concerning badly approximable real numbers. The Mordell-Gruber spectrum has been studied since 1936, concerning the supremum of the area of a rectangle centered at the origin that contains no other points of a unimodular lattice. We develop techniques that incorporate unimodular lattices and integer sequences, providing the log-systole function which unifies four famous spectra. We compute the Mordell-Gruber spectrum in the two-dimensional case and generalize Perron's formulas behind some famous spectra. Furthermore, we generalize the sum of Cantor sets to prove that certain functions on cartesian product of two Cantor sets contain an interval. Combining the techniques, we prove closedness and existence of Hall's interval in several different applications.

A Fully Gauge-Fixed SU(2) Hamiltonian for Quantum Simulations

Abstract:We demonstrate how to construct a fully gauge-fixed lattice Hamiltonian for a pure SU(2) gauge theory. Our work extends upon previous work, where a formulation of an SU(2) lattice gauge theory was developed that is efficient to simulate at all values of the gauge coupling. That formulation utilized maximal-tree gauge, where all local gauge symmetries are fixed and a residual global gauge symmetry remains. By using the geometric picture of an SU(2) lattice gauge theory as a system of rotating rods, we demonstrate how to fix the remaining global gauge symmetry. In particular, the quantum numbers associated with total charge can be isolated by rotating between the lab and body frames using the three Euler angles. The Hilbert space in this new `sequestered' basis partitions cleanly into sectors with differing total angular momentum, which makes gauge-fixing to a particular total charge sector trivial, particularly for the charge-zero sector. In addition to this sequestered basis inheriting the property of being efficient at all values of the coupling, we show that, despite the global nature of the final gauge-fixing procedure, this Hamiltonian can be simulated using quantum resources scaling only polynomially with the lattice volume.

Abstract:Lattice tensor representations are used to investigate the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator for the 4-dimensional pure SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory. Due to the different symmetry structure of hypercubic lattices compared to the continuum space-time, lattice correlation functions are described by different tensor structures. Therefore, form factors describing lattice correlation functions have, in principle, non-trivial relations with the continuum counterparts. The use of several tensor bases respecting lattice symmetries, and the analysis of its completeness allows to quantify the deviations of the lattice results from the continuum theory, and also estimate the theoretical uncertainty in the propagator. Furthermore, our analysis tests continuum based relations with the lattice data and shows that the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator is suitably described by a unique form factor, as in the continuum formulation. Additionally, we identified classes of kinematic configurations where these deviations are minimal and the continuum description of lattice tensors is improved.

Abstract:Spectral densities encode non-perturbative information crucial in computing physical observables in strongly coupled field theories. Using lattice gauge theory data, we perform a systematic study to demonstrate the potential of recent technological advances in the reconstruction of spectral densities. We develop, maintain and make publicly available dedicated analysis code that can be used for broad classes of lattice theories. As a test case, we analyse the Sp(4) gauge theory coupled to an admixture of fermions transforming in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. We measure the masses of mesons in energy-smeared spectral densities, after optimising the smearing parameters for available lattice ensembles. We present a summary of the mesons mass spectrum in all the twelve (flavored) channels available, including also several excited states.

Abstract:Three techniques for performing gauge-invariant, noncompact lattice simulations of nonabelian gauge theories are discussed. In the first method, the action is not itself gauge invariant, but a kind of lattice gauge invariance is restored by random compact gauge transformations during the successive sweeps of the simulation. This method has been applied to pure $SU(2)$ gauge theory on a $12^4$ lattice, and Wilson loops have been measured at strong coupling, $\beta=0.5$. These Wilson loops display a confinement signal not seen in simulations performed earlier with the same action but without the random gauge transformations. In the second method, the action is gauge symmetrized by integrations over the group manifold. The third method is based upon a new, noncompact form of the action that is exactly invariant under lattice gauge transformations. The action is a natural discretization of the classical Yang-Mills action.

Abstract:We study the most general Two Higgs Doublet Model with $SU(2)$ gauge fields on the lattice. The phase space is probed through the computation of gauge-invariant global observables serving as proxies for order parameters. In each phase, the spectrum of the theory is analysed for different combinations of bare couplings and different symmetry breaking patterns. The scale setting and determination of the running gauge coupling are performed through the Wilson flow computation of the action density.

Entanglement Properties of SU(2) Gauge Theory

Abstract:We review recent and present new results on thermalization of nonabelian gauge theory obtained by exact numerical simulation of the real-time dynamics of two-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We discuss: (1) tests confirming the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis; (2) the entanglement entropy of sublattices, including the Page curve, the transition from area to volume scaling with increasing energy of the eigenstate and its time evolution that shows thermalization of localized regions to be a two-step process; (3) the absence of quantum many-body scars for $j_{\rm max}>1/2$; (4) the spectral form factor, which exhibits the expected slope-ramp-plateau structure for late times; (5) the entanglement Hamiltonian for SU(2), which has properties in accordance with the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem; and (6) a measure for non-stabilizerness or "magic" that is found to reach its maximum during thermalization. We conclude that the thermalization of nonabelian gauge theories is a promising process to establish quantum advantage.

Abstract:We provide an extended lattice study of the SU(2) gauge theory coupled to one Dirac fermion flavour ($N_{\mathrm{f}} =1$) transforming in the adjoint representation as the continuum limit is approached. This investigation is supplemented by numerical results obtained for the SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermion flavours ($N_{\mathrm{f}} =2$) transforming in the adjoint representation, for which we perform numerical investigations at a single lattice spacing value, which is analysed together with earlier calculations. The purpose of our study is to advance the characterisation of the infrared properties of both theories, which previous investigations have concluded to be in the conformal window. For both, we determine the mass spectrum and the anomalous dimension of the fermion condensate using finite-size hyperscaling of the spectrum, mode number analysis of the Dirac operator (for which we improve on our previous proposal) and the ratio of masses of the lightest spin-2 particle over the lightest scalar. All methods provide a consistent picture, with the anomalous dimension of the condensate $\gamma_*$ decreasing significantly as one approaches the continuum limit for the $N_{\mathrm{f}} = 1$ theory towards a value consistent with $\gamma_* = 0.174(6)$, while for $N_{\mathrm{f}} = 2$ the anomalous dimension decreases more slowly with $\beta$. A chiral perturbation theory analysis show that the infrared behaviour of both theories is incompatible with the breaking of chiral symmetry.

The dynamics of zero modes in lattice gauge theory---difference between SU(2) and SU(3) in 4D

Abstract:The dynamics of zero modes in gauge theory is highly nontrivial due to its nonperturbative nature even in the case where the other modes can be treated perturbatively. One of the related issues concerns the possible instability of the trivial vacuum $A_\mu(x)=0$ due to the existence of nontrivial degenerate vacua known as "torons". Here we investigate this issue for the 4D SU(2) and SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theories on the lattice by explicit Monte Carlo calculation of the Wilson loops and the Polyakov line at large $\beta$. While we confirm the leading $1/\beta$ predictions obtained around the trivial vacuum in both SU(2) and SU(3) cases, we find that the subleading term vanishes only logarithmically in the SU(2) case unlike the power-law decay in the SU(3) case. In fact, the 4D SU(2) case is marginal according to the criterion by Coste et al. Here we show that the trivial vacuum dominates in this case due to large fluctuations of the zero modes around it, thereby providing a clear understanding of the observed behaviors.
