Abstract:We investigate Problem 155 form the "Scottish Book" due to S. Mazur and L. Sternbach. In modern terminology they asked if every bijective, locally isometric map between two real Banach spaces is always a global isometry. Recently, an affirmative answer when the source space is separable was obtained by M. Mori, using techniques related to the Mazur-Ulam theorem and its generalizations. The main purpose of this short note is to offer a different approach to Problem 155 motivated by recent advances in metric geometry. We show that it has an affirmative answer under the additional assumption that the map considered is a local isometry.

The convergence Newton polygon of a $p$-adic differential equation V : local index theorems

Abstract:In this paper and its sequel we consider locally-free $\mathscr{O}_X$-modules together with a connection over a quasi-smooth Berkovich curve $X$. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the finite dimensionality of their de Rham cohomology over local domains such as disks and annuli. We deal with both analytic and meromorphic connections and we derive index formulas relating the index to the behavior of the radii of convergence of their solutions at the boundary of the curve $X$. We introduce the notion of absolute local index. We prove that it is an intrinsic notion extending the previous notions of Robba's generalized index and that of $p$-adic exponents. This condition arises at the boundary of the curve $X$ and it is an exact condition for the finite dimensionality of the de Rham cohomology. We derive comparison results between formal, meromorphic and analytic de Rham cohomologies.

Abstract:We state a conjecture, local Langlands in families, connecting the centre of the category of smooth representations on $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$-modules of a quasi-split $p$-adic group $\mathrm{G}$ (where $q$ is the cardinality of the residue field of the underlying local field), the ring of global functions on the stack of Langlands parameters for $\mathrm{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$, and the endomorphisms of a Gelfand-Graev representation for $\mathrm{G}$. For a class of classical $p$-adic groups (symplectic, unitary, or split odd special orthogonal groups), we prove this conjecture after inverting an integer depending only on $\mathrm{G}$. Along the way, we show that the local Langlands correspondence for classical $p$-adic groups (1) preserves integrality of $\ell$-adic representations; (2) satisfies an "extended" (generic) packet conjecture; (3) is compatible with parabolic induction up to semisimplification (generalizing a result of Moussaoui), hence induces a semisimple local Langlands correspondence; and (4) the semisimple correspondence is compatible with automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ fixing $\sqrt{q}$.

Abstract:We deal with locally free $\mathcal{O}_X$-modules with connection over a Berkovich curve $X$. As a main result we prove local and global decomposition theorems of such objects by the radii of convergence of their solutions. We also derive a bound of the number of edges of the controlling graph, in terms of the geometry of the curve and the rank of the equation. As an application we provide a classification result of such equations over elliptic curves.

Almost ordinary Abelian surfaces over global function fields with application to integral points

Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial almost ordinary Abelian surface with possibly bad reductions over a global function field of odd characteristic $p$. Suppose $\Delta$ is an infinite set of positive integers, such that $\left(\frac{m}{p}\right)=1$ for $\forall m\in \Delta$. If $A$ doesn't admit any global real multiplication, we prove the existence of infinitely many places modulo which the reduction of $A$ has endomorphism ring containing $\mathbb{Z}[x]/(x^2-m)$ for some $m\in \Delta$. This generalizes the $S$-integrality conjecture for elliptic curves over number fields, as proved in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0509485" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0509485">arXiv:math/0509485</a>, to the setting of Abelian surfaces over global function fields. As a corollary, we show that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is not simple, generalizing the main result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.11679" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.11679">arXiv:1812.11679</a> to the non-ordinary case.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.
Local and global questions "beyond endoscopy"

Abstract:The near-completion of the program of endoscopy poses the question of what lies next. This article takes a broad view of ideas beyond the program of endoscopy, highlighting the connections among them, and emphasizing the relationship between local and global aspects. Central among those ideas is the one proposed in a 2000 lecture of R. P. Langlands, aiming to extract from the stable trace formula of a group G the bulk of those automorphic representations in the image of the conjectural functorial lift corresponding to a morphism of L-groups ${^LH} \to {^LG}$. With the extension of the problem of functoriality to the "relative" setting of spherical varieties and related spaces, some structure behind such comparisons has started to reveal itself. In a seemingly unrelated direction, a program initiated by Braverman--Kazhdan, also around 2000, to generalize the Godement--Jacquet proof of the functional equation to arbitrary L-functions, has received renewed attention in recent years. We survey ideas and developments in this direction, as well, and discuss the relationship between the two programs.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the conjecture of R. Scott and R. Styer which asserts that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers a , b and c all greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation in positive integers x , y and z , except for specific cases. The fundamental result proves the conjecture under some congruence condition modulo c on a and b . As applications the conjecture is confirmed to be true if c takes some small values including the Fermat primes found so far, and in particular this provides an analytic proof of the celebrated theorem of Scott (J Number Theory 44(2):153-165, 1993) solving the conjecture for in a purely algebraic manner. The method can be generalized for smaller modulus cases, and it turns out that the conjecture holds true for infinitely many specific values of c not being perfect powers. The main novelty is to apply a special type of the p -adic analogue to Baker's theory on linear forms in logarithms via a certain divisibility relation arising from the existence of two hypothetical solutions to the equation. The other tools include Baker's theory in the complex case and its non-Archimedean analogue for number fields together with various elementary arguments through rational and quadratic numbers, and extensive computation.

Abstract:In classical number theory, one has the famous theorem of Kummer–Sinnott giving the index of the cyclotomic units in the total unit group. Using the division values of sgn-normalized rank one Drinfeld modules, we construct the group of extended cyclotomic units for an abelian extension of a global function field and calculate its index in the whole unit group. The result could be regarded as an analogue and a generalization of Kummer–Sinnott's.

Abstract:The proper Class $\bf{No}$ of all Conway's numbers $\cite{l3}$ is considered as a region of investigation. It turns out to be a total ordered Field (i.e., a field whose domain is a proper Class) and this totally, or linear ordered Class, containing the real numbers ${\mathbb R}$ and the ordinal numbers {\bf On}. For any subfield $F$ of $\bf{No}$, i.e., $F$ is a set nor proper class, considered with topology induced by a linear ordering on $F$ a completion $\tilde F$ is constructed; in particular, for $\zeta=\omega^{\omega^\mu}$, $0\leq\mu<\Omega$, and for a specially defined subfield $F={\mathbb P}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$ a complete subfield ${\mathbb R}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$ is defined as $\tilde {\mathbb P}_\zeta$. Fundamental (Cauchy) sequences $(x_\alpha)_{0\leq\alpha<\zeta}$ are considered in a subfield $F\subset {\mathbb P}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$, where $\zeta$ is the smallest ordinal number which does not belong to $F$, and they are the main instrument in the paper. A fragment of Mathematical Analysis in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$ is given and two of its non-trivial results are presented: every positive number $x\in{\mathbb R}_\zeta$ has a unique $n$-th root in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$, for each positive integer $n$ and every odd-degree polynomial with coefficients in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$ has a root in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$. Hence so-called fundamental theorem of algebra: the ring ${\mathbb R}_\zeta[i]\stackrel{def}{=}{\mathbb C}_\zeta$ of all numbers of the form $x+iy$ ($x,y\in{\mathbb R}_\zeta$), $i^2=-1$, is an algebraically closed field.

Abstract:We prove the local Kudla–Rapoport conjecture, which is a precise identity between the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Rapoport–Zink spaces and the derivatives of local representation densities of hermitian forms. As a first application, we prove the global Kudla–Rapoport conjecture, which relates the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties and the central derivatives of the Fourier coefficients of incoherent Eisenstein series. Combining previous results of Liu and Garcia–Sankaran, we also prove cases of the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula in any dimension.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent result of Prasad, we consider three stronger notions of arithmetic equivalence: local integral equivalence, integral equivalence, and solvable equivalence. In addition to having the same Dedekind zeta function (the usual notion of arithmetic equivalence), number fields that are equivalent in any of these stronger senses must have the same class number, and solvable equivalence forces an isomorphism of adele rings. Until recently the only nontrivial example of integral and solvable equivalence arose from a group-theoretic construction of Scott that was exploited by Prasad. Here we provide infinitely many distinct examples of solvable equivalence, including a family that contains Scott's construction as well as an explicit example of degree 96. We also construct examples that address questions of Scott, and of Guralnick and Weiss, and shed some light on a question of Prasad.
Local-global principle and integral Tate conjecture for certain varieties

Abstract:We give a geometric criterion to check the validity of the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on a smooth projective variety that is separably rationally connected in codimension one, and to check that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the local-global principle for zero-cycles on a separably rationally connected variety defined over a global function field. We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the local-global principle for zero-cycles on all geometrically rational surfaces defined over a global function field, and to the Hasse principle for rational points on del Pezzo surfaces of degree four defined over a global function field of odd characteristic. Along the way, we also prove some results about the space of one-cycles on a smooth projective variety that is separably rationally connected in codimension one, which leads to the equality of the coniveau filtration and the strong coniveau filtration on degree $3$ homology of such varieties.

Abstract:We prove the absolute convergence, functional equations and meromorphic continuation of local intertwining periods on parabolically induced representations of finite length for certain symmetric spaces over local fields of characteristic zero, including Galois pairs as well as pairs of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash type. Furthermore, for a general symmetric space we prove a sufficient condition for distinction of an induced representation in terms of distinction of its inducing data. Both results generalize previous results of the first two named authors. In particular, for both we remove a boundedness assumption on the inducing data and for the second we further remove any assumption on the symmetric space. Moreover, when the inducing representation is uniformly bounded, we extend the field of cofficients from p-adic to any local field of characteristic zero. In fact this extension holds for all finite length representations under a natural generic irreducibility assumption for parabolic induction. In the case of p-adic symmetric spaces, combined with the necessary conditions for distinction that follow from the geometric lemma, this provides a necessary and sufficient condition for distinction of representations induced from cuspidal.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

On a Pair of Diophantine Equations

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to prove effective results in Diophantine approximation. This approach involves measures of local positivity of divisors combined with Faltings's version of Siegel's lemma instead of a zero estimate such as Dyson's lemma. We then use it to prove an effective theorem on the simultaneous approximation of two algebraic numbers satisfying an algebraic equation with complex coefficients.
