Abstract:We calculate the free energy of SU(N) gauge theories on the lattice, to three loops. Our result, combined with Monte Carlo data for the average plaquette, gives a more precise estimate of the gluonic condensate.

Abstract:We compute the free energy density for pure non-Abelian gauge theory at high temperature and zero chemical potential. The three-loop result to $O(g^4)$ is [a lovely formula. Get the paper and print it out.] We examine the sensitivity of this result to the choice of renormalization scale. We also give a result for the free energy of scalar $\phi^4$ theory, correcting a result previously given in the literature.

Abstract:We compute gluelump masses and mass differences using SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We study states with total angular momentum up to $J = 3$, parity $P = +,-$ and charge conjugation $C = +,-$. Computations on four ensembles with rather fine lattice spacings in the range $0.040 \, \text{fm} \ldots 0.093 \, \text{fm}$ allow continuum extrapolations of gluelump mass differences. We complement existing results on hybrid static potentials with the obtained gluelump masses, which represent the limit of vanishing quark-antiquark separation. We also discuss the conversion of lattice gluelump masses to the Renormalon Subtracted scheme, which is e.g. important for studies of heavy hybrid mesons in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

Abstract:Lattice gauge theories with gauge groups SO(3) and SU(2) are compared. The free energy of electric twist, an order parameter for the confinement-deconfinement transition which does not rely on centre-symmetry breaking, is measured in both theories. The results are used to calibrate the scale in SO(3).

Abstract:Monte Carlo (M-C) measurements of the SU(3)xSU(3) chiral model defined on a N×N 2-dimensional (2-D) random lattice are presented. Calculations are made of energy, specific heat and order parameter per spin on the 10×10, 12×12 and 16×16 lattics. It is shown that the system enters a crossover region at β=4. 75±0.10, but no evidences of phase transition are obtained. It is found that our results are consistent with that of the 4-D gauge theory and the 2-D chiral model on the regular lattice.

Abstract:Using the Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory, we perform some variational calculations to obtain the ground-state energy of SU(3) gauge held and scalar (0(++)) glueball mass. The agreement of our data with the strong and weak expansion results in the corresponding limits indicates that this method can provide us with reliable information in the most interesting medium region. The trial wavefunction used in our variational method is also proven to be a good first approximation of the ground-state of the SU(3) gauge field. Upgrading this function according to correlations of adjacent plaquettes may mean better results.

Abstract:The non-perturbative input necessary for the determination of the ${\cal O}(g^6)$ part of the weak coupling expansion of the free energy density for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories is estimated. Although the perturbative information completing the contribution to this order is missing, we give arguments that the magnetic fluctuations are dominated by screened elementary magnetic gluons.

Abstract:The SU(2) gluonic correlation functions, glueball effective masses in the $J^{P}=0^{+}$, $2^{+}$ and $0^{-}$ channels were calculated from the lattice classical gauge configurations which were obtained by smoothing the thermal gauge configurations through the improved cooling method. The instanton-induced attractive force in the $0^{+}$ channel and the repulsive force in the $0^-$ channel are confirmed in the Monte Carlo simulation. There is evidence that the instanton vacuum contribution to the $0^+$ glueball mass is significant.

Abstract:We carry out a systematic study of the effective bosonic string describing confining flux tubes in $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Yang--Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions. While their low-energy properties are known to be universal and are described well by the Nambu--Gotō action, a non-trivial dependence on the gauge group is encoded in a series of undetermined subleading corrections in an expansion around the limit of an arbitrarily long string. We quantify the first two of these corrections by means of high-precision Monte Carlo simulations of Polyakov-loop correlators in the lattice regularization. We compare the results of novel lattice simulations for theories with $N=3$ and $6$ color charges, and report an improved estimate for the $N=2$ case, discussing the approach to the large-$N$ limit. Our results are compatible with analytical bounds derived from the S-matrix bootstrap approach. In addition, we also present a new test of the Svetitsky--Yaffe conjecture for the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ theory in three dimensions, finding that the lattice results for the Polyakov-loop correlation function are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the Svetitsky--Yaffe mapping, which are worked out quantitatively applying conformal perturbation theory to the three-state Potts model in two dimensions. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract:Gauge theories with matter fields in various representations play an important role in different branches of physics. Recently, it was proposed that several aspects of the interesting pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors near optimal doping may be explained by an emergent $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry. Around the transition with positive hole-doping, one can construct a $(2+1)-$dimensional $SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled to four adjoint scalar fields which gives rise to a rich phase diagram with a myriad of phases having different broken symmetries. We study the phase diagram of this model on the Euclidean lattice using the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. We find the existence of multiple broken phases as predicted by previous mean field studies. Depending on the quartic couplings, the $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry is broken down either to $U(1)$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ in the perturbative description of the model. We further study the confinement-deconfinement transition in this theory, and find that both the broken phases are deconfining in the range of volumes that we studied. However, there exists a marked difference in the behavior of the Polyakov loop between the two phases.

Abstract:We determine the pure-gauge SU(3) topological susceptibility slope χ ′ , related to the next-to-leading-order term of the momentum expansion of the topological charge density 2-point correlator, from numerical lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our strategy consists in performing a double-limit extrapolation: first we take the continuum limit at fixed smoothing radius, then we take the zero-smoothing-radius limit. Our final result is χ ′ = [171(21) MeV] 2 . We also discuss a theoretical argument to predict its value in the large- N limit, which turns out to be remarkably close to the obtained N = 3 lattice result.

Abstract:We present preliminary numerical evidence for the hypothesis that the Hamiltonian SU(2) gauge theory discretized on a lattice obeys the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). To do so we study three approximations: (a) a linear plaquette chain in a reduced Hilbert space limiting the electric field basis to j=0,12 , (b) a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with periodic or closed boundary condition and the same Hilbert space constraint, and (c) a chain of only three plaquettes but such a sufficiently large electric field Hilbert space ( j≤72 ) that convergence of all energy eigenvalues in the analyzed energy window is observed. While an unconstrained Hilbert space is required to reach the continuum limit of SU(2) gauge theory, numerical resource constraints do not permit us to realize this requirement for all values of the coupling constant and large lattices. In each of the three studied cases we check first for random matrix theory (RMT) behavior in the eigenenergy spectrum and then analyze the diagonal as well as the off-diagonal matrix elements between energy eigenstates for a few operators. Within current uncertainties all results for (a), (b) and (c) agree with ETH predictions. Furthermore, we find the off-diagonal matrix elements of the electric energy operator exhibit RMT behavior in frequency windows that are small enough in (b) and (c). Abstract:The [dual] string tension of a spatial 't Hooft loop in the deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theory can be formulated as the tension of an interface separating different Z_N deconfined vacua. We review the 1-loop perturbative calculation of this interface tension in the continuum and extend it to the lattice. The lattice corrections are large. Taking these corrections into account, we compare Monte Carlo measurements of the dual string tension with perturbation theory, for SU(2). Agreement is observed at the 2% level, down to temperatures O(10) T_c.

Abstract:The free energy of U(N) and SU(N) gauge theory was recently found to be of order N^0 to all orders of a perturbative expansion about a center-symmetric orbit of vanishing curvature. Here I consider extended models for which this expansion is perturbatively stable. The extreme case of an SU(2) gauge theory whose configuration space is restricted to center-symmetric orbits has recently been investigated on the lattice <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-lat/0509156" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-lat/0509156">hep-lat/0509156</a>. In extension of my talk, a discussion and possible interpretation of the observed finite temperature phase transition is given. The transfer matrix of constrained SU(N) lattice gauge theory is constructed for any finite temperature.

Abstract:Lattice tensor representations are used to investigate the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator for the 4-dimensional pure SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory. Due to the different symmetry structure of hypercubic lattices compared to the continuum space-time, lattice correlation functions are described by different tensor structures. Therefore, form factors describing lattice correlation functions have, in principle, non-trivial relations with the continuum counterparts. The use of several tensor bases respecting lattice symmetries, and the analysis of its completeness allows to quantify the deviations of the lattice results from the continuum theory, and also estimate the theoretical uncertainty in the propagator. Furthermore, our analysis tests continuum based relations with the lattice data and shows that the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator is suitably described by a unique form factor, as in the continuum formulation. Additionally, we identified classes of kinematic configurations where these deviations are minimal and the continuum description of lattice tensors is improved.
