Abstract:The differential cross section and polarization observables for the elastic reaction induced by deuteron scattering off electrons at rest are calculated in the one-photon-exchange (Born) approximation. Specific attention is given to the kinematical conditions, that is, to the specific range of incident energy and transferred momentum. The peculiar interest of this reaction is to access very small transferred momenta. Stent placement in ostial and nonostial atherosclerotic renal arterial stenoses: a prospective follow-up study.

Abstract:PURPOSE To compare the results of balloon percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) and stent placement in atherosclerotic ostial, proximal, and isolated truncal stenoses. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 1994 and April 1998 the authors prospectively followed up 163 consecutive patients with 200 atherosclerotic renal arterial lesions after primary PTRA or primary stent placement. Duplex ultrasonography was performed 1 day and 3, 6, and 12 months later. RESULTS The primary 12-month PTRA patency rates were 34% (21 of 33 atherosclerotic lesions) for ostial stenoses, 65% (20 of 60) for proximal stenoses, and 83% (five of 30) for truncal stenoses (chi(2) value, 15.63; P <.001). The corresponding stent patency rates were 80% (four of 21), 72% (nine of 34), and 66% (five of nine), respectively (chi(2) value, 4.11; not significant). Significant stent-related reduction in risk of restenosis was limited to the ostial stenoses (P =.002). CONCLUSION Renal arterial stent placement considerably improves patency in ostial stenoses, but compared with the technically successful PTRA, it does not significantly improve primary patency in proximal and isolated truncal renal arterial stenoses.
Electromagnetic Single-nucleon Response involving Polarized Targets

Abstract:This work is an extension of our past study focused on a covariant representation of the electromagnetic (EM) current of spin-1/2 Dirac particles, specifically, nucleons. In the past study the EM responses that occur in unpolarized electron scattering from unpolarized nucleons were derived; however, scattering of polarized electrons from polarized nucleons was beyond the scope of that earlier work. Here such extensions are studied in detail. While in other work the EM response has already been developed for the double-polarization scattering problem, that effort was focused on high-energy collider physics. In the present study the formalism is recast into a set of EM response functions that have transparent dependencies on the relevant kinematic variables, especially on how these behave with respect to the momentum p of the (moving) struck, polarized nucleon. The motivation for such a reformulation of the problem is the desire to see a clear path to expansions in $p$ of the EM response for use in devising ``prescriptions for nuclear physics''. Results are provided where comparisons of the full (unexpanded) responses with various approximations that are frequently employed in studies of EM nuclear physics are made, demonstrating that under some circumstances such approximations are reasonable, whereas in other circumstances the expanded results are likely to be invalid. In addition, the EM current operators and approximations to them are discussed in detail.

Polarized-deuteron scattering by spin-zero target nuclei at intermediate energies

Abstract:General analytical expressions for the observables in $dA$-scattering reaction have been derived in the diffraction approximation. The resulting formulas describe the cross section and polarization states of the deuteron when it scattering by nuclei with zero spin in the ground state. The tabulated distributions of the target nucleus density and the realistic deuteron wave functions calculated on the basis of Nijmegen nucleon-nucleon potentials were used. The nucleon-nucleus phases were calculated in the framework of Glauber formalism and making use of the double-folding potential. The calculated cross sections and analyzing powers in elastic scattering of deuterons by $^{16}\text{O}$ and $^{40}\text{Ca}$ nuclei at 700 MeV are compared with the corresponding experimental data.

Abstract:One of the central challenges of hadron physics in the regime of strong (non-perturbative) QCD is to identify the relevant degrees of freedom of the nucleon and to quantitatively explain experimental data in terms of these degrees of freedom. Among the processes studied so far Compton scattering plays a prominent role because of the well understood properties of the electromagnetic interaction. Different approaches to describe Compton scattering have been discussed up to now. It will be shown that the most appropriate ones are provided by nonsubtracted dispersion theories of the fixed-t and fixed-θ types, where the properties of these two versions are complementary so that advantage can be taken from both of them. In the frame of fixed-t dispersion theory it was possible to precisely reproduce experimental differential cross sections obtained for the proton in a wide angular range and for energies up to 1 GeV. At energies of the first resonance region and below, precise values for the electromagnetic polarizabilities and spin-polarizabilities have been determined for the proton and the neutron. As a summary we give the following recommended experimental values for the electromagnetic polarizabilities and backward spin-polarizabilities of the nucleon: αp=12.0±0.6, βp=1.9∓0.6, αn=12.5±1.7, βn=2.7∓1.8, in units of 10−4 fm3 and γπ(p)=−38.7±1.8, γπ(n)=58.6±4.0 in units of 10−4 fm4. These data show that diamagnetism is a prominent property of nucleon structure. It will be shown that the largest part of diamagnetism, or equivalently (α−β), is not related to the conventional isobar-meson structure of the nucleon as showing up in meson photoproduction. Rather, the underlying mechanism is a t-channel σ-meson exchange, with the constituent-quark–meson configuration remaining in its ground state. The same is true for the backward spin-polarizability γπ where the relevant meson is the π0. Making the reasonable assumption that the quantities (α−β) and γπ are related to the structure of the nucleon, we come to the conclusion that the σ and π0 intermediate states are part of the structure of the nucleon. It is a challenge for further research to integrate these degrees of freedom into a consistent description of the structure of the nucleon.

Abstract:We generalize the recoil polarization method for the determination of the proton form factor to the case of the disintegration of vector polarized deuterons by longitudinally polarized electrons, $\vec d(\vec e, e'n)p$. We suggest to measure for this reaction, in the kinematics of quasi-elastic $en$-scattering, the ratio $R_{xz}=A_x/A_z$ of the asymmetries induced by the $x$- and $z$-components of the deuteron vector polarization. In the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation the ratio $R_{xz}$ is sensitive to $G_{En}$ in a wide interval of momentum transfer squared, whereas it depends weakly on the details of the $np$-interaction and on the choice of the deuteron wave function. Moreover, in the range $0.5\le Q^2\le$1.5 GeV$^2$, the ratio $R_{xz}$ shows a smooth dependence on $Q^2$, making the analysis simpler.

Abstract:We study diffractive vector meson production at small-$x$ in the collision of electrons and polarized deuterons $e+d^{\uparrow}$. We consider the polarization dependence of the nuclear wave function of the deuteron, which results in an azimuthal angular dependence of the produced vector meson when the deuteron is transversely polarized. The Fourier coefficients extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the vector meson differential cross-section exhibit notable differences between longitudinally and transversely polarized deuterons. The angular dependence of the extracted effective deuteron radius provides direct insight into the structure of the polarized deuteron wave function. Furthermore, we observe slightly increased gluon saturation effects when the deuteron is longitudinally polarized compared to the transversely polarized case. The small-$x$ observables studied in this work will be accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Abstract: We study the lepton pair production in the photodisintegration of the deuteron process. The complete seven-fold differential cross section is calculated via the Bethe-Heitler mechanism with final state interactions taken into account. The deuteron bound state is described by a relativistic covariant deuteron-nucleon vertex. With numerical results, we find that the differential cross section has strong dependence on the lepton azimuthal angle in the small polar angle region and sharp peaks appear in the dependence on the invariant mass of the produced lepton pair or the two nucleons in the final state. We demonstrate that such nearly singular feature originates from the collinearity between the produced lepton or antilepton and the incident photon, and it is physically regularized by the lepton mass in our calculation. The final state interaction between the knocked-out nucleon and the recoil nucleon redistributes the differential cross section over the missing momentum, with a significant enhancement at large missing momentum and a suppression in the intermediate region. With a further decomposition of the final state interaction contribution, it is found that the on-shell term dominates the near quasi-elastic region while the off-shell term dominates the other end. In addition, we examine the contribution from the interference between the proton amplitude and the neutron amplitude, which as expected is found negligible even if the proton-neutron rescattering is included. The result in this work can serve as an input for the analysis and background estimation of multiple exclusive measurements at Jefferson Lab and future electron-ion colliders.

Abstract:We review the recent progress made in studies of deuteron structure at small internucleon distances. This progress is largely facilitated by the new generation of experiments in deuteron electrodisintegration carried out at unprecedentedly high momentum transfer. The theoretical analysis of these data confirms the onset of the high energy eikonal regime in the scattering process which allows one to separate long-range nuclear effects from the effects genuinely related to the short distance structure of the deuteron. Our conclusion is that for the first time the deuteron is probed at relative momenta beyond 300 MeV/c without dominating long-range effects. As a result, at these large nucleon momenta the cross-section is sensitive to the nuclear dynamics at subfermi distances. Due to large internal momenta involved we are dealing with the relativistic bound state that is best described by the light-cone momentum distribution of nucleons in the deuteron. We present the first attempt of extracting the deuteron light-cone momentum distribution function from data and discuss the importance of this quantity for studies of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) structure of the bound nucleon in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off the deuteron. We conclude the review giving an outlook of the next generation of high energy experiments which will extend our reach to much smaller distances in the deuteron.

Abstract:The deuteron beam vector polarization is obtained at the Nuclotron Internal Target Station using quasielastic proton–proton scattering on the polyethylene target. The selection of useful events is performed using the time and amplitude information from scintillation counters. The asymmetry on the hydrogen is obtained by the subtraction of the carbon background. The values of vector polarization are obtained at the beam energies of 500 and 650 MeV/nucleon. The obtained values are compared with the data obtained in the deuteron–proton elastic scattering at the beam energy of 135 MeV/nucleon.

Abstract:We discuss new spin observables presently accessible to measurement, namely polarization transfer coefficients from doubly spin-polarized initial state to the outgoing proton in the elastic proton-deuteron (pd) scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions. The sensitivity of these observables to three-nucleon force (3NF) effects is investigated and compared to sensitivities of the constituent standard single polarization transfer coefficients. $K_{y,y}^{y'}$ in elastic pd scattering, for which large 3NF effects, up to 40\%, have been found at higher energies, seems the most promising observable to measure.

Abstract:Elastic lepton-deuteron scattering was considered within the limit of zero lepton mass. The deuteron wave function in the coordinate representation for the Reid93 potential was applied to numerical calculations. The angular-momentum dependence of values spin correlation coefficients $C_{xz}^{(0)}$, $C_{zz}^{(0)}$ and tensor asymmetries $A_{xx}^{(0)}$, $A_{xz}^{(0)}$, $A_{zz}^{(0)}$ have been evaluated in 3D format for Reid93 potential. These polarization observables are analyzed for different energies and scattering angles. Application of the obtained values allows better explanation and illustration of the laws of elastic lepton-deuteron scattering.

Abstract:Nucleon electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities related to the charge and magnetization distributions inside the nucleon. Understanding the nucleon electromagnetic structure in terms of the underlying quark and gluon degrees of freedom of quantum chromodynamics is a challenging and urgent task. The nucleon electromagnetic form factors have been studied in the past extensively from unpolarized electron scattering experiments. With the development in polarized beam, recoil polarimetry, and polarized target technologies, polarization experiments have provided more precise data on these quantities. At the same time, significant theoretical progress in areas ranging from effective field theories to lattice QCD calculations, has been made in describing these data. In this article, we review recent experimental and theoretical progress on this subject. we also provide future outlook on this topic.

Abstract:The ratio of the transverse and longitudinal component of polarization transfer to protons in quasi-elastic $(\vec{e}, e^{\prime} \vec{p}\,)$ reaction, $P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z$, is sensitive to the proton's electromagnetic form factor ratio, $G_E/G_M$. To explore density-dependent in-medium modifications, a comparison of polarization transfer ratios involving protons from distinct nuclear shells, each with different local nuclear densities, has been proposed. In this study, we present such comparisons between four shells, $1s_{1/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$ in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $1d_{3/2}$, $2s_{1/2}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$. In an effort to account for other many-body effects that may differ between shells, we use state-of-the-art relativistic distorted-wave impulse-approximation (RDWIA) calculation and present the double ratios, $(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm Data}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm RDWIA}$ as well as the super ratios, $\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm Data}/\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm RDWIA}$, for chosen shells A and B, as a function of effective local nuclear densities. We find that double ratios for individual shells show a dependence on the probed effective nuclear densities. Studying the ratios, we observed a systematic variation between pairs of higher- and lower-density shells.

Abstract:A first measurement of the polarisation transfer from a circularly-polarised photon to the final state neutron ($C^n_{x'}$) in deuterium photodisintegration has been carried out. This quantity is determined over the photon energy range 370~--~700~MeV and for neutron centre-of-mass breakup angles $\sim45-120^{\circ}$. The polarisation of the final state neutrons was determined by an ancillary large-acceptance nucleon polarimeter, surrounding a cryogenic liquid deuterium target within the Crystal Ball detector at MAMI. The polarimeter characterised $(n,p)$ charge exchange of the ejected neutrons to determine their polarisation. The new $C^n_{x'}$ data are also compared to a theoretical model based on nucleonic and nucleon resonance degrees of freedom constrained by the current world-database of deuterium photodisintegration measurements. Structures in $C^n_{x'}$ observed in the region of the $d^*(2380)$ could not be explained by conventional models of deuteron photodisintegration.

Abstract:We discuss the applicability of pQCD to the elastic scattering of electrons on protons and deuterons. We analyze the $Q^2$-dependence of the reduced deuteron form factor, taking into account the recent data on the electric proton form factor and we find that the value of the QCD-scale parameter $\Lambda$ differs essentially from the value $\Lambda=0.1$ GeV, previously found using the dipole parametrization of the electromagnetic nucleon form factors $G_E$ and $G_M$. Moreover the predicted scaling behavior of the reduced deuteron form factor can not be recovered in the Dirac and Pauli representations for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors.
