Abstract:Dedicated to the memory of our colleague, Harald Fritzsch, who, together with Murray Gell-Mann, introduced the color quantum number as the exact symmetry responsible for the strong interaction, thus establishing quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as a fundamental non-Abelian gauge theory. A basic understanding of hadron properties, however, such as confinement and the emergence of a mass scale, from first principles QCD has remained elusive: Hadronic characteristics are not explicit properties of the QCD Lagrangian and perturbative QCD, so successful in the large transverse momentum domain, is not applicable at large distances. In this article, we shall examine how this daunting obstacle is overcome in holographic QCD with the introduction of a superconformal symmetry in anti de Sitter (AdS) space which is responsible for confinement and the introduction of a mass scale within the superconformal group. When mapped to light-front coordinates in physical spacetime, this approach incorporates supersymmetric relations between the Regge trajectories of meson, baryon and tetraquark states which can be visualized in terms of specific $SU(3)_C$ color representations of quarks. We will also briefly discuss here the implications of holographic models for QCD color transparency in view of the present experimental interest. Based on the invited contribution to the book dedicated to the memory of Harald Fritzsch.

Abstract:We review, clarify, and extend the notion of color-flavor locking. We present evidence that for three degenerate flavors the qualitative features of the color-flavor locked state, reliably predicted for high density, match the expected features of hadronic matter at low density. This provides, in particular, a controlled, weak-coupling realization of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in this (slight) idealization of QCD.

Abstract:From QCD we derive a three-body Faddeev-type formulation of baryons, as qqq colour-singlet states bound by gluon exchange, which is covariant, has dynamically hidden chiral symmetry and incorporates the colour dynamics. The formulation exploits the dynamical role of colour "3 diquark substructure in baryons to simplify computations. For non-zero current quark masses the jP = ~ + and ~ - baryon octet mass formulae are shown to satisfy the Gell-Mann-Okubo and the Coleman-Glashow multiplet mass relationships.

Abstract:We use a variational procedure to study finite density QCD in an approximation in which the interaction between quarks is modelled by that induced by instantons. We find that uniform states with conventional chiral symmetry breaking have negative pressure with respect to empty space at all but the lowest densities, and are therefore unstable. This is a precisely defined phenomenon which motivates the basic picture of hadrons assumed in the MIT bag model, with nucleons as droplets of chiral symmetry restored phase. At all densities high enough that the chirally symmetric phase fills space, we find that color symmetry is broken by the formation of a condensate of quark Cooper pairs. A plausible ordering scheme leads to a substantial gap in a Lorentz scalar channel involving quarks of two colors, and a much smaller gap in an axial vector channel involving quarks of the third color.
Colour Confinement: a Dynamical Phenomenon of QCD

Abstract:We study in this Letter the origin of the confinement in QCD by analyzing the colour charge of physics states. We derive the colour charge operator in QCD and compare it with the electromagnetic charge operator in QED. It shows that the two charges have very similar structure, but the dynamical properties of the gauge fields are different. The difference between the behaviours of the gauge boson propagator at zero momentum for QCD and that for QED guarantees that there occurs colour confinement in QCD but there is no confinement in QED. We give then a universal relation between the confinement and the dynamical property of QCD and reveals the origin of the colour confinement, which can be demonstrated as the dynamical effect of QCD or more explicitly the dynamical mass generation of the gluon.

Abstract:The gauge formalism in telepalallel gravity provides an interesting viewpoint to describe interactions according to an anholonomic observer's tetrad basis. Without going into assessing the complete viability of quantization in an early stage, this paper explores classical gravity within the framework of a classical-to-quantum bridge between the SU(1, 3) Yang–Mills gauge formalism and the gauge-like treatment of teleparallel gravity. Specifically, the perturbed spacetime algebra with Weitzenböck connection can be assimilated to a local complexification based on the SU(1, 3) Yang–Mills theory, what we call hypercolor or, simply, color. The formulation of the hypercolor dynamics is build by a translational gauge, as in the teleparallel gravities. In particular, this work analyses small perturbations of a metric decomposition related to the Wilson line and the Kaluza–Klein metric, but obtaining electrodynamics in four dimensions. The spacetime coordinates are now matrices that represent elements of the algebra. To make compatible the formulation of a colored gravity with the Lorentz force and the Maxwell equations, it is enough to define every energy potential origin as 0 in the event horizon instead of the classic zero potential at infinity. Under the colored gravity framework, standard electromagnetism can be obtained as a particular abelian case.

Abstract:Color confinement is the most puzzling phenomenon in the theory of strong interaction based on a quantum SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The origin of color confinement supposed to be intimately related to non-perturbative features of the non-Abelian gauge theory, and touches very foundations of the theory. We revise basic concepts underlying QCD concentrating mainly on concepts of gluons and quarks and color structure of quantum states. Our main idea is that a Weyl symmetry is the only color symmetry which determines all color attributes of quantum states and physical observables. We construct an ansatz for classical Weyl symmetric dynamical solutions in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory which describe one particle color singlet quantum states for gluons and quarks. Abelian Weyl symmetric solutions provide microscopic structure of a color invariant vacuum and vacuum gluon condensates. This resolves a problem of existence of a gauge invariant and stable vacuum in QCD. Generalization of our consideration to SU(N) (N=4,5) Yang-Mills theory implies that the color confinement phase is possible only in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory.

Abstract:We review the theoretical interpretation of deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at low values of the Bjorken variable $x \simeq Q^2/W^2 \lsim 0.1$. The process proceeds via the interaction of quark-antiquark $(q \bar q)$ color-dipole fluctuations of the (virtual) photon with the proton. In terms of the forward Compton scattering amplitude, two reaction channels contribute to the interaction of the $q \bar q$ color dipole with the gluon field in the proton. Dependent on the kinematics, there is either {\it color transparency}, corresponding to a cancellation of the amplitudes for the two reaction channels, or {\it saturation}, occuring when the process is dominated by a single interaction channel. The connection between the color-dipole picture and the pQCD improved parton model is elaborated upon.

Abstract:We provide an inkling of recent progress in hadron physics made using QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations, reviewing: the notion of in-hadron condensates and a putative solution of a gross problem with the cosmological constant; a symmetry-preserving computation that simultaneously correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states, and contributes to a resolution of the conundrum of the Roper resonance; and a prediction for the Q(2)-dependence of u- and d-quark Dirac and Pauli form factors in the proton, which exposes the critical role played by diquark correlations within the nucleon.

Abstract:We review a unique prediction of Quantum Chromo Dynamics, called color transparency (CT), where the final (and/or initial) state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear medium must vanish for exclusive processes at high momentum transfers. We retrace the progress of our understanding of this phenomenon, which began with the discovery of the $J/\psi$ meson, followed by the discovery of high energy CT phenomena, the recent developments in the investigations of the onset of CT at intermediate energies and the directions for future studies.

Abstract:In tackling QCD, a constructive feedback between theory and extant and forthcoming experiments is necessary in order to place constraints on the infrared behaviour of QCD’s β-function, a key nonperturbative quantity in hadron physics. The Dyson–Schwinger equations provide a tool with which to work toward this goal. They connect confinement with dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, both with the observable properties of hadrons, and hence can plausibly provide a means of elucidating the material content of real-world QCD. This contribution illustrates these points via comments on: in-hadron condensates; dressed-quark anomalous chromo- and electro-magnetic moments; the spectra of mesons and baryons, and the critical role played by hadron-hadron interactions in producing these spectra.

Abstract:Quantum chromodynamics describes the colour force, which binds quarks and gluons into neutrons and protons, and binds them together in the nuclei of atoms. The colour force is very strong, very short-range (less than 10-16 m) and very complicated — eight different fields respond to the presence and motion of three types of charge, each of which can be positive or negative. Remarkably, we can now observe coherent effects in the colour force, where the fields from two or more particles overlap and reinforce one another.

Abstract:The hadronization effects induced by various color connections of the four-quark system in e+e− annihilation are briefly reviewed. A special color connection of the four-heavy-quark system with no color separation favors the production of doubly heavy baryons. For the related three-jet case, the corresponding hadronization has not yet been considered. We argue that it can be effectively described as two-string fragmentation in addition to the leading heavy diquark fragmentation. The production rate and the properties of the final-state hadron systems are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the string effect as a fingerprint of this hadronization procedure.

Abstract:An attempt is made to describe from first principles the large-scale structure of the confining vacuum in quantum chromodynamics. Starting from our previous variational studies of the SU(2) pure gauge theory in an external Abelian chromomagnetic field and extending Feynman’s qualitative analysis in (2+1)-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory, we show that the SU(3) vacuum in three-space and one-time dimensions behaves like a disordered chromomagnetic condensate. Color confinement is assured by the presence of a mass gap together with the absence of color long-range correlations. We offer a clear physical picture for the formation of the flux tube between static quark charges that allows us to determine the color structure and the transverse profile of the flux-tube chromoelectric field. The transverse profile of the flux-tube chromoelectric field turns out to be in reasonable agreement with lattice data. We, also, show that our quantum vacuum allows for both the color and ordinary Meissner effect. We find that for massless quarks, the quantum vacuum can accommodate a finite non-zero density of fermion zero modes leading to the dynamical breaking of the chiral symmetry.

Abstract:After a very brief overview recollecting the 'classic' parts of QCD, that is its application to describe hard processes and static properties of hadrons, I survey recent work - some very recent - on QCD at non-zero temperature and density. At finite temperature and zero density there is a compelling theoretical framework allowing us to predict highly specific, non-trivial dependence of the phase structure on the number of flavors and colors. Several aspects have been rigorously, and successfully, tested against massive numerical realizations of the microscopic theory. The theoretical description of high density is nowhere near as mature, but some intriguing possibilities have been put forward. The color/flavor locked state recently proposed for three flavors has many remarkable features connected to its basic symmetry structure, notably including chiral symmetry re-breaking and the existence (unlike for two flavors) of a gauge invariant order parameter. I survey potential applications to heavy ion collisions, astrophysics, and cosmology. A noteworthy possibility is that stellar explosions are powered by release of QCD latent heat. One main goal of physics is to determine the fundamental laws, where "fundamental" is taken in the strict reductionist sense, that is, laws incapable of being derived from other, more universal principles. I believe it is profoundly wrong, however, to portray this as the only goal, or even necessarily as the most important goal. It is as if after playing each note of the piano once each, you were to say "and all the rest is just combinations". True enough - but somehow misleading. In QCD we first played the basic notes twenty-five years ago, and certainly by fifteen years ago it was clear to most reasonable people that there were no more notes to be found. But it would be quite foolish to see this as the end of the subject. Indeed, several interesting, attractive chords have been discovered already, and large parts of the keyboard have barely been touched.
