Abstract:<p>Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a promising way of effectively converting CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels by utilizing renewable electricity. To date, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to single-carbon products, especially carbon monoxide and formate, has been well achieved. However, the efficient conversion of CO2 to more valuable multicarbon products (e.g., ethylene, ethanol, <i>n</i>-propanol, and <i>n</i>-butanol) is difficult and still under intense investigation. Here, recent progresses in the electrochemical CO2 reduction to multicarbon products using copper-based catalysts are reviewed. First, the mechanism of CO2RR is briefly described. Then, representative approaches of catalyst engineering are introduced toward the formation of multicarbon products in CO2RR, such as composition, morphology, crystal phase, facet, defect, strain, and surface and interface. Subsequently, key aspects of cell engineering for CO2RR, including electrode, electrolyte, and cell design, are also discussed. Finally, recent advances are summarized and some personal perspectives in this research direction are provided.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper is primarily dedicated to addressing the efficient conversion of multi-carbon products (such as ethylene, ethanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol) in the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR). Specifically: 1. **Background and Challenges**: With the development of industrialization, the excessive consumption of fossil fuels has led to an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere, which in turn causes environmental issues such as global warming and rising sea levels. To mitigate these environmental problems and effectively reutilize the cheap and abundant CO₂ resources, researchers have devoted significant efforts to the conversion of CO₂. The electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction is an effective approach that can convert CO₂ into high-value-added chemicals and fuels. However, there are current bottlenecks in the activity and selectivity of catalysts, especially for the efficient generation of multi-carbon products. 2. **Research Focus**: This paper reviews recent progress in achieving the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to generate multi-carbon products on copper-based catalysts. It first briefly describes the mechanism of CO₂RR, then introduces methods to promote the generation of multi-carbon products through catalyst engineering (including composition, morphology, crystal phase, crystal facets, defects, strain, and surface and interface regulation). Additionally, it discusses the importance of cell engineering (including electrodes, electrolytes, and cell design) in improving CO₂RR performance. In summary, this paper aims to summarize and explore how the design and optimization of catalysts and cells can enhance the performance of copper-based catalysts in the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to generate high-value multi-carbon products.
