Abstract:A city with fractal structure used to be thought of as a kind of spatial chaotic attractor. Several chaotic attractors indeed can be found by simulating urbanization dynamics through numerical iterations. However, the results lend little support to the suggestion that real cities are chaotic systems. The rural-urban population interaction model does not display chaotic behavior in normal state, but chaos will happen only if the parameter values of the model deviate from the reality. Accordingly, whether or not complex urban systems are chaotic is posed as a pending question. Varied simulation experiments based on the urbanization dynamics imply that the complex patterns of cities occur on the edge of chaos rather than in chaotic state. This result presents an angle of view for us to understand Holland’s question, i.e., why the interactions that form a city are typically stable in the real world.
Spatial interaction creates period-doubling bifurcation and chaos of urbanization

Abstract:This paper provides a new way of looking at complicated dynamics of simple mathematical models. The complicated behavior of simple equations is one of the headstreams of chaos theory. However, a recent study based on dynamical equations of urbanization shows that there are still some undiscovered secrets behind the simple mathematical models such as logistic equation. The rural–urban interaction model can also display varied kinds of complicated dynamics, including period-doubling bifurcation and chaos. The two-dimension map of urbanization presents the same dynamics as that from the one-dimension logistic map. In theory, the logistic equation can be derived from the two-population interaction model. This seems to suggest that the complicated behavior of simple models results from interaction rather than pure intrinsic randomicity. In light of this idea, the classical predator–prey interaction model can be revised to explain the complex dynamics of logistic equation in physical and social sciences.

Abstract:Urbanization is one of the main factors altering hydrological processes. To understand the influence of urbanization on flood characteristics including runoff, inundation and streamflow, it is essential to quantify the level of urbanization and analyze the corresponding impacts on flood. This study proposed an integrated and systematic framework to assess how urbanization affects flood characteristics in Hangzhou, China. Land use changes in 2000–2020 representing the level of urbanization were extracted from Landsat images with an ensemble machine learning method and future scenarios were designed with Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS). The runoff, inundation and streamflow under 24 h design rainfall with 100 year return period were assessed using the integrated hydrologic-hydraulic model for land use of different years. Finally, the relationship between land use changes and flood characteristics were identified and analyzed. It was found that the study area underwent a rapid urbanization process with artificial surface increasing from 6.93
Fractal dimension evolution and spatial replacement dynamics of urban growth

Abstract:This paper presents a new perspective of looking at the relation between fractals and chaos by means of cities. Especially, a principle of space filling and spatial replacement is proposed to explain the fractal dimension of urban form. The fractal dimension evolution of urban growth can be empirically modeled with Boltzmann's equation. For the normalized data, Boltzmann's equation is equivalent to the logistic function. The logistic equation can be transformed into the well-known 1-dimensional logistic map, which is based on a 2-dimensional map suggesting spatial replacement dynamics of city development. The 2-dimensional recurrence relations can be employed to generate the nonlinear dynamical behaviors such as bifurcation and chaos. A discovery is made that, for the fractal dimension growth following the logistic curve, the normalized dimension value is the ratio of space filling. If the rate of spatial replacement (urban growth) is too high, the periodic oscillations and chaos will arise, and the city system will fall into disorder. The spatial replacement dynamics can be extended to general replacement dynamics, and bifurcation and chaos seem to be related with some kind of replacement process.

Modeling complex spatial dynamics of two-population interaction in urbanization process

Abstract:This paper is mainly devoted to lay an empirical foundation for further research on complex spatial dynamics of two-population interaction. Based on the US population census data, a rural and urban population interaction model is developed. Subsequently a logistic equation on percentage urban is derived from the urbanization model so that spatial interaction can be connected mathematically with logistic growth. The numerical experiment by using the discretized urban-rural population interaction model of urbanization shows a period-doubling bifurcation and chaotic behavior, which is identical in patterns to those from the simple mathematical models of logistic growth in ecology. This suggests that the complicated dynamics of logistic growth may come from some kind of the nonlinear interaction. The results from this study help to understand urbanization, urban-rural population interaction, chaotic dynamics, and spatial complexity of geographical systems.

A Fractal Theory of the Urban System in Yangtze Delta

Abstract:This paper studies the Urban system in Yantze delta using fractal theory. We figures out the primate city index in Yantze delta according to the town primacy rule of M. Jefferson, and then the town-size fractal dimension is worked out to discuss to the scale structure of the urban system in Yantze delta. In addition, spatial correlation dimension of the town-size distribution in Yantze delta is put forward to analyses the spatial structure of urban system. According to all these analyses it points out there are some deficiencies of the urban system in Yangtze delta, such as: (1)The scale distributing in Yangtze delta is primacy distributing; (2) Middle-small cities develop much slower than big cities; (3) The capacity of spatial interaction isn't strong enough. The paper puts forward the direction for developing the urban system in Yangtze delta: Realize the integration of regional economy, and speed up the development in Yangtzi delta.

Abstract:The fractal dimension growth of urban form can be described with sigmoid functions such as logistic function due to squashing effect. The sigmoid curves of fractal dimension suggest a type of spatial replacement dynamics of urban evolution. How to understand the underlying rationale of the fractal dimension curves is a pending problem. This study is based on two previous findings. First, normalized fractal dimension proved to equal normalized spatial entropy; second, a sigmoid function proceeds from an urban-rural interaction model. Defining urban space-filling measurement by spatial entropy, and defining rural space-filling measurement by information gain, we can construct a new urban-rural interaction and coupling model. From this model, we can derive the logistic equation of fractal dimension growth strictly. This indicates that urban growth results from the unity of opposites between spatial entropy increase and information increase. In a city, an increase in spatial entropy is accompanied by a decrease in urban land availability. An inference is that urban growth struggles between the force of urban space-filling and the force of urban space-saving. This work presents a set of urban models of spatial dynamics, which help us understand urban evolution from the angle of view of entropy and fractals.

Abstract:Geographical phenomena of cities fall into two categories: one is simple systems which characteristic scales, and the other is complex systems without characteristic scale. The key of conventional mathematical modeling and quantitative analysis is to find characteristic length. The scale-free phenomena of cities cannot be effectively characterized by traditional mathematical methods. Thus the characteristic scale-based spatial analysis should be replace by scaling-based spatial analysis. Based on mathematical reasoning and empirical studies, this work is devoted to discussing scaling, fractals, spatial complexity of cities and the inherent relationships between these theories. The main points are as follows. First, scaling is one of basic properties of cities, and the essence of scaling in cities is invariance of contraction or dilation transform of urban models. Second, fractal pattern is the spatial order emerging from urban self-organized evolution. The essence of city fractals is scaling symmetry. Third, spatial complexity of cities is related to scaling and fractals. The ideas from scaling and fractals make new ways for understanding complex spatial systems. In conclusions, fractal geometry provides a powerful tool for scaling analysis, and can be used to explore spatial complexity and singularity of cities. Scaling and fractals can be integrated into a new theoretical framework of spatial complexity of cities.
Urban chaos and replacement dynamics in nature and society

Abstract:Replacements resulting from competition are ubiquitous phenomena in both nature and society. The evolution of a self-organized system is always a physical process substituting one type of components for another type of components. A logistic model of replacement dynamics has been proposed in terms of technical innovation and urbanization, but it fails to arouse widespread attention in the academia. This paper is devoted to laying the foundations of general replacement principle by using analogy and induction. The empirical base of this study is urban replacement, including urbanization and urban growth. The sigmoid functions can be employed to model various processes of replacement. Many mathematical methods such as allometric scaling and head/tail breaks can be applied to analyzing the processes and patterns of replacement. Among varied sigmoid functions, the logistic function is the basic and the simplest model of replacement dynamics. A new finding is that replacement can be associated with chaos in a nonlinear system, e.g., urban chaos is just a part of replacement dynamics. The aim of developing replacement theory is at understanding complex interaction and conversion. This theory provides a new way of looking at urbanization, technological innovation and diffusion, Volterra–Lotka’s predator–prey interaction, man–land relation, and dynastic changes resulting from peasant uprising, and all that. Especially, the periodic oscillations and chaos of replacement dynamics can be used to explain and predict the catastrophic occurrences in the physical and human systems.
Modeling the Urbanization Process of China by Using Nonlinear Dynamic Equations

Abstract:A model based on nonlinear dynamics is proposed to characterize the urbanization process of China. Then a universal model of urbanization process is presented by combining the above-mentioned model with the United Notions' model, which can be used to describe the United States' urbanization process. The time series data of urbanization level in China from 1949 to 2000 is employed to verify the new model, and the result is satisfying. The model bears an analogy with the Lotka-Volterra model of predator-prey ecological interaction, one of the most widely discussed examples of a non-linear system in two dimensions. The difference lies in that one of the parameters is zero. Extensions of such models should help us understand Holland' s question: why predator-prey ecological interaction exhibit strong oscillations, whereas the interactions that form a city are typically more stable.
An analytical process of the spatio-temporal evolution of urban systems based on allometric and fractal ideas

Abstract:This paper presents a computer-based analytical framework for the spatio-temporal evolution of urban systems using the ideas from the allometric growth associated with fractals. Both cities as systems and systems of cities follow the law of allometric growth, and the scaling factors of the allometric relations can compose the matrix equations as eigenfunctions. The fractal dimension arrays are just the eigenvectors of the scaling factor matrices while the numbers of variables are the greatest eigenvalues. The solutions of matrix equations can be employed to analyse city systems and evaluate relative levels of urban development. The method is applied to Hangzhou urban system of China. The results reveal clearly an urbanization process characterized as population concentration and an industrialization process characterized as industrial diffusion. The computation results are consistent with the reality, which indicate that the method is available for analyzing the spatio-temporal evolution of complex systems such as cities.

Abstract:As a new branch of science emerging in 1960s,Chaos Theory is known as one of the three most shocking scientific breakthroughs in the 20th century,and the other two are Relativity Theory and Quantum Theory.It reveals the dialectical relationship of contradictory unity in the complicated systems,including order and disorder,certainty and uncertainty and briefness and complexity,which open up a new thought approach for city planning.This essay exposes that city is a chaos system; on the basis of this,it combines the theories included in Chaos Theory,including Fractal Theory,Nondeterministic Theory,Chaos Disorder Theory and Butterfly Theory,with the theory and practice of city planning,and brings forward inspirations of Chaos Theory possibly benefiting on city planning,aiming for enriching thought approach of city planning and advancing innovation of its methodology.

In this case, the urban description based on characteristic scales should be replaced by urban characterization based on scaling. Fractal geometry is one of powerful tools for scaling analysis of cities, thus the concept of fractal cities emerged. However, how to understand city fractals is still a pending question. By means of logic deduction and ideas from fractal theory, this paper is devoted to discussing fractals and fractal dimensions of urban landscape. The main points of this work are as follows. First, urban form can be treated as pre-fractals rather than real fractals, and fractal properties of cities are only valid within certain scaling ranges. Second, the topological dimension of city fractals based on urban area is 0, thus the minimum fractal dimension value of fractal cities is equal to or greater than 0. Third, fractal dimension of urban form is used to substitute urban area, and it is better to define city fractals in a 2-dimensional embedding space, thus the maximum fractal dimension value of urban form is 2. A conclusion can be reached that urban form can be explored as fractals within certain ranges of scales and fractal geometry can be applied to the spatial analysis of the scale-free aspects of urban morphology. Based on fractal dimension, topological dimension, and embedding space dimension, a set of fractal indexes can be constructed to characterize urban form and growth.

Abstract:Entropy is one of physical bases for fractal dimension definition, and the generalized fractal dimension was defined by Renyi entropy. Using fractal dimension, we can describe urban growth and form and characterize spatial complexity. A number of fractal models and measurements have been proposed for urban studies. However, the precondition for fractal dimension application is to find scaling relations in cities. In absence of scaling property, we can make use of entropy function and measurements. This paper is devoted to researching how to describe urban growth by using spatial entropy. By analogy with fractal dimension growth models of cities, a pair of entropy increase models can be derived and a set of entropy-based measurements can be constructed to describe urban growing process and patterns. First, logistic function and Boltzmann equation are utilized to model the entropy increase curves of urban growth. Second, a series of indexes based on spatial entropy are used to characterize urban form. Further, multifractal dimension spectrums are generalized to spatial entropy spectrums. Conclusions are drawn as follows. Entropy and fractal dimension have both intersection and different spheres of application to urban research. Thus, for a given spatial measurement scale, fractal dimension can often be replaced by spatial entropy for simplicity. The models and measurements presented in this work are significant for integrating entropy and fractal dimension into the same framework of urban spatial analysis and understanding spatial complexity of cities.

Abstract:Entropy is arguably one of the most powerful concepts to understand the world, from the behavior of molecules to the expansion of the universe, from how life emerges to how hybrid complex systems like cities come into being and continue existing. Yet, despite its widespread application, it is also one of the most misunderstood concepts across the sciences. This chapter seeks to demystify entropy and its main interpretations, along with some of its explorations in the context of cities. It first establishes the foundations of the concept by describing its trajectory since its inception in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in the 19th century, its different incarnations from Boltzmanns pioneering formulation and Shannons information theory to its absorption in biology and the social sciences, until it reaches a nascent urban science in the 1960s. The chapter then identifies some of the main domains in which entropy has been explored to understand cities as complex systems, from entropy-maximizing models of spatial interaction and applications as a measure of urban form, diversity, and complexity to a tool for understanding conditions of self-organization and urban sustainability.

Abstract:Fractal geometry has opened up broad prospects for urban geography, and a new discipline-fractal urban geography is taking shape. This paper treats of the progress of fractal research on cities and urban systems in three respects. First, the origin and development of fractal studies on urban geographical phenomena are narrated briefly, and the Western achievements in the scientific research of fractal cities are introduced and explained. Secondly, the headway of urban geo-fractal studies, especially on fractal systems of cities, made by Chinese geographical workers is expounded, and a comparison is made between the Western and Chinese related researches. Thirdly, the problems, perspectives, significance, and importance of the studies on urban geo-farctals are analysed and discussed, and a number of new tasks set probably in the future are pointed out in order to predict the main developing directions of fractal cities and systems of cities. It is predicated that a theoretical revolution will be certain to take place because of the introduction of fractal theory to urban geography.
Spatiotemporal Evolution of Urban Form and Land-Use Structure in Hangzhou, China: Evidence from Fractals

Abstract:Using fractal theory and urban land-use maps for 1949, 1959, 1980, and 1996, this study is devoted to analyzing the evolutionary features of urban form and land-use structure in Hangzhou, China. We find that self-similarity exists in both the built-up area and the municipal area, and fractal properties tend to become better defined with time. The fractal dimension of each type of land use is less than that of all land use. From 1980 to 1996, the fractal dimensions of residential, industrial, and external transport increased while those of educational and virescent land use decreased, indicating that partial degradation accompanied holistic optimization during the process of Hangzhou's self-organizing evolvement. The mechanisms of the spatiotemporal evolution of urban form in Hangzhou are discussed, including socioeconomic development and the dispersal or concentration of activities. The Tandabing approach to urban spatial expansion, the Jianfengchazhen approach to urban construction, and a top-down urban management style led to differences in fractal evolution between Chinese and Western cities.

Abstract:A pair of nonlinear programming models is built to explain the fractal structure of systems of cities and those of rivers. The hierarchies of cities can be characterized by a set of exponential functions, which is identical in form to the Horton–Strahler’s laws of the river networks. Four power laws can be derived from these exponential functions. The evolution of both systems of cities and rivers are then represented as nonlinear dual programming models: to maximize information entropy subject to a certain energy use or to minimize energy dissipation subject to certain information capacity. The optimal solutions of the programming problems are just the exponential equations associated with scaling relations. By doing so, fractals and the self-organized criticality marked by the power laws are interpreted using the idea from the entropy-maximization principle, which gives further weight to the suggestion that optimality of the system as a whole defines the dynamical origin of fractal forms in both nature and society.
