Abstract:The main theme of this paper is that singular automorphic forms on classical groups are given by theta series liftings. We establish several inequalities relating the automorphic multiplicities of a given representation and that of its abstract theta lift. Our methods allow one to lift noncuspidal, square integrable automorphic forms when the dual pair involved is in the stable range. In this way we construct new families of singular automorphic forms, many of which are clearly unipotent. In fact, starting from one-dimensional representations and repeating the procedure (of lifting in the stable range), one may obtain all automorphic forms which are quadratic unipotent in the sense of Moeglin.
Level one automorphic representations of an anisotropic exceptional group over $\mathbb{Q}$ of type $\mathrm{F}_{4}$

Abstract:Up to isomorphism, there is a unique connected semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Lie type $\mathrm{F}_{4}$, with compact real points and split over $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ for all primes $p$. Let $\mathbf{F}_{4}$ be such a group. In this paper, we study the level one automorphic representations of $\mathbf{F}_{4}$ in the spirit of the work of Chenevier, Renard, and Taïbi. First, we give an explicit formula for the number of these representations having any given archimedean component. For this, we study the automorphism group of the two definite exceptional Jordan algebras of rank $27$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ studied by Gross, as well as the dimension of the invariants of these groups in all irreducible representations of $\mathbf{F}_{4}(\mathbb{R})$. Then, assuming standard conjectures by Arthur and Langlands for $\mathbf{F}_{4}$, we refine this counting by studying the contribution of the representations whose global Arthur parameter has any possible image (or "Sato-Tate group"). This includes a detailed description of all those images, as well as precise statements for the Arthur's multiplicity formula in each case. As a consequence, we obtain a conjectural but explicit formula for the number of algebraic, cuspidal, level one automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{26}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with Sato-Tate group $\mathbf{F}_{4}(\mathbb{R})$ of any given weight (assumed "$\mathrm{F}_{4}$-regular"). The first example of such representations occurs in motivic weight $36$.

Abstract:Abstract We construct level‐raising congruences between ‐ordinary automorphic representations, and apply this to the problem of symmetric power functoriality for Hilbert modular forms. In particular, we prove the existence of the symmetric power lift of a Hilbert modular eigenform of regular weight for each odd integer . In a future work with James Newton, we will use these results to establish the existence of the symmetric power lift for all .

Statistics of Cohomological Automorphic Representations on Unitary Groups via the Endoscopic Classification

Abstract:Consider the family of automorphic representations on a unitary group with cohomological factor $\pi_0$ at infinity and given split level. We compute statistics of this family as the level goes to infinity. For unramified unitary groups and a large class of $\pi_0$, we use the endoscopic classification of representations to compute the exact leading term for counts of representations and averages of Satake parameters. The bounds on our error terms are similar to previous work by Shin-Templier who studied the case of discrete series at infinity. We also prove new upper bounds for all cohomological representations. This has many corollaries: new exact asymptotics on the growth of cohomology in certain towers of locally symmetric spaces, an averaged Sato-Tate equidistribution law for spectral families with specific non-tempered cohomological components at infinity, and the Sarnak-Xue density hypothesis for cohomological representations at infinity on all unitary groups of rank $\geq 5$.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the endoscopic transfer of definite unitary group U(n), which sends a pair of automorphic forms of U(m),U(n) to an automorphic form of U(m+n), to finite slope p-adic automorphic forms for definite unitary groups by constructing a rigid analytic map between eigenvarieties E_m \times E_n \to E_{m+n}, which at classical points interpolates endoscopic transfer map.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an infinite-dimensional real classical group containing the complete unitary group (or complete orthogonal group) as a subgroup. Then $G$ generates a category of double cosets (train) and any unitary representation of $G$ can be canonically extended to the train. We prove a technical lemma about the complete group $GL$ of infinite $p$-adic matrices with integer coefficients, this lemma implies that the phenomenon of automatic extension of unitary representations to trains is valid for infinite-dimensional $p$-adic groups.

Abstract:When n is odd, consider the finite general linear and unitary groups of rank n, extended by the inverse transpose automorphism. There are elements in the extended groups which square to a regular unipotent element, and we evaluate the values of irreducible characters of the extended groups on these elements. Several intermediate results on real conjugacy classes and real-valued characters of these groups are obtained along the way.

Abstract:In this paper we study higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations of reductive groups over discrete valuation rings, with finite residue field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In previous work we proved that, at even levels, these geometrically constructed representations are isomorphic to certain algebraically constructed representations (referred to as the algebraisation theorem at even levels). In this paper we work with an arbitrary level $>1$. Our main result is (1) the algebraisation theorem at all levels $>1$ (with the sign being explicitly determined for $q\geq7$). As consequences, we obtain (2) the regular semisimplicity of orbits of generic higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations, and the dimension formula; in the course of the proof, we give (3) an induction formula of higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations, and a new proof of the character formula at regular semisimple elements.

Abstract:By assuming the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations on inner forms of unitary groups, which is currently work in progress by Kaletha, Minguez, Shin, and White, we bound the growth of cohomology in congruence towers of locally symmetric spaces associated to $U(n,1)$. In the case of lattices arising from Hermitian forms, we conjecture that the growth exponents we obtain are sharp in all degrees.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of automorphic forms for $GL(n,\BZ)\ltimes \BZ^{(m,n)}$ and discuss invariant differential operators on the Minkowski-Euclid space. The group $GL{n,\BR}\ltimes \BR^{(m,n)}$ is the semidirect product of $GL(n,\BR)$ and the additive group $\BR^{(m,n)}$ and is {\it not} a reductive group. The Minkowski-Euclid space is the quotient space of $GL(n,\BR)\ltimes \BR^{(m,n)}$ by $O(n,\BR)$. The Minkowski-Euclid space is an important non-symmetric homogeneous space geometrically and number theoretically. We present some open problems to be solved in the future.

The main focus of this manuscript is automorphic forms on unitary groups, with a view toward algebraicity results. I also discuss related aspects of automorphic $L$-functions in the setting of unitary groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we study top Fourier coefficients of certain automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Jiang on top Fourier coefficients of isobaric automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$ of form $$ \Delta(\tau_1, b_1) \boxplus \Delta(\tau_2, b_2) \boxplus \cdots \boxplus \Delta(\tau_r, b_r)\,, $$ where $\Delta(\tau_i,b_i)$'s are Speh representations in the discrete spectrum of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_ib_i}(\mathbb{A})$ with $\tau_i$'s being unitary cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_i}(\mathbb{A})$, and $n = \sum_{i=1}^r a_ib_i$. Endoscopic lifting images of the discrete spectrum of classical groups form a special class of such representations. The result of this paper will facilitate the study of automorphic forms of classical groups occurring in the discrete spectrum.

Abstract:We obtain an upper bound for the dimension of the cuspidal automorphic forms for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a number field, whose archimedean local representations are not tempered. More precisely, we prove the following result. Let $F$ be a number field and $\mathbb{A}_{F}$ be the ring of adeles of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}_{F}$ be the ring of integers of $F$. Let $\mathfrak{X}_{F,\mathrm{ex}}$ be the set of irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ with the trivial central character such that for each archimedean place $v$ of $F$, the local representation of $\pi$ at $v$ is an unramified principal series and is not tempered. For an ideal $J$ of $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, let $\mathrm{K}_{0}(J)$ be the subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ corresponding to $\Gamma_0(J) \subset \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$. Let $r_1$ be the number of real embeddings of $F$ and $r_2$ be the number of conjugate pairs of complex embeddings of $F$. Using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, we have \begin{equation*} \sum_{\pi\in \mathfrak{X}_{F,\mathrm{ex}}} \dim \pi^{\mathrm{K}_0(J)} \ll_{F} \frac{[\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_{F}) : \Gamma_0(J)]}{(\log (N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}(J)))^{2r_1+3r_2}} \quad \text{ as } \quad |N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}(J)|\to \infty. \end{equation*} From this result, we obtain the result on an upper bound for the number of Hecke-Maass cusp forms of weight $0$ on $\Gamma_0(N)$ which do not satisfy the Selberg eigenvalue conjecture.

Abstract:This work is largely inspired by the 2003 Ph.D. thesis \cite{snitz} of Kobi Snitz. In his thesis, Snitz constructed two irreducible, automorphic, cuspidal representations $ \pi $ and $ \pi' $ of the metaplectic group $ G\left ( \mathbb A \right ) = \widetilde{ SL }_{ 2 } \left ( \mathbb A \right ) $ where each representation is obtained from a different global theta lifts of certain non-trivial automorphic characters $ \xi $ and $ \xi' $ of the orthogonal groups $ H_{ \mathbb A } = O \left ( q, V \right ) \left ( \mathbb A \right ) $ and $ H_{ \mathbb A } '= O \left ( q', V' \right ) \left ( \mathbb A \right ) $, respectively, where $ \mathbb A = \mathbb A_{ \mathbb F } $ is the adele ring of a number field $ \mathbb F $. Snitz shows that for certain matching data of quadratic spaces and automorphic quadratic characters, that these two representations of $ G \left ( \mathbb A \right ) $ are isomorphic, i.e. $ \pi\cong\pi'$. On the GL(2n) eigenvariety: branching laws, Shalika families and $p$-adic $L$-functions

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$-eigenvariety is étale over the (pure) weight space at non-critical Shalika points, and construct multi-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions varying over the resulting Shalika components. Our constructions hold in tame level 1 and Iwahori level at $p$, and give $p$-adic variation of $L$-values (of regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$ admitting Shalika models) over the whole pure weight space. In the case of $\mathrm{GL}(4)$, these results have been used by Loeffler and Zerbes to prove cases of the Bloch--Kato conjecture for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$. Our main innovations are: (a) the introduction and systematic study of `Shalika refinements' of local representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$, evaluating their attached local twisted zeta integrals; and (b) the $p$-adic interpolation of representation-theoretic branching laws for $\mathrm{GL}(n) \times \mathrm{GL}(n)$ inside $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$. Using (b), we give a construction of multi-variable $p$-adic functionals on the overconvergent cohomology groups for $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$, interpolating the zeta integrals of (a). We exploit the resulting non-vanishing of these functionals to prove our main arithmetic applications.

Abstract:Let E/F be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. In this paper, we investigate two approaches which attempt to describe the smooth irreducible representations of GL(n,E) that are distinguished by its subgroup GL(n,F). One relates this class to representations which come as base change lifts from a quasi-split unitary group F, while another deals with a certain symmetry condition. By characterizing the union of images of the base change maps we show that these two approaches are closely related. Using this observation, we are able to prove a statement relating base change and distinction for ladder representations. We then produce a wide family of examples in which the symmetry condition does not impose GL(n,F)-distinction, and thus exhibit the limitations of these two approaches.

Abstract:We introduce a method for producing vector-valued automorphic forms on unitary groups from scalar-valued ones. As an application, we construct an explicit example. Our strategy employs certain differential operators. It is inspired by work of Cléry and van der Geer in the setting of Siegel modular forms, but it also requires overcoming challenges that do not arise in the Siegel setting.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth, separated, geometrically connected scheme defined over a number field $K$ and $\{\rho_\lambda\}_\lambda$ a system of n-dimensional semisimple $\lambda$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group of $X$ such that for each closed point $x$ of $X$, the specialization $\{\rho_{\lambda,x}\}_\lambda$ is a compatible system of Galois representations under mild local conditions. For almost all $\lambda$, we prove that any type A irreducible subrepresentation of $\rho_\lambda\otimes \bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$ is residually irreducible. When $K$ is totally real or CM, $n\leq 6$, and $\{\rho_\lambda\}_\lambda$ is the compatible system of Galois representations of $K$ attached to a regular algebraic, polarized, cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A}_K)$, for almost all $\lambda$ we prove that $\rho_\lambda\otimes\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$ is (i) irreducible and (ii) residually irreducible if in addition $K=\mathbb{Q}$.

Random Unitary Representations of Surface Groups II: The large $n$ limit

Abstract:Let $\Sigma_{g}$ be a closed surface of genus $g\geq 2$ and $\Gamma_{g}$ denote the fundamental group of $\Sigma_{g}$. We establish a generalization of Voiculescu's theorem on the asymptotic $*$-freeness of Haar unitary matrices from free groups to $\Gamma_{g}$. We prove that for a random representation of $\Gamma_{g}$ into $\mathsf{SU}(n)$, with law given by the volume form arising from the Atiyah-Bott-Goldman symplectic form on moduli space, the expected value of the trace of a fixed non-identity element of $\Gamma_{g}$ is bounded as $n\to\infty$. The proof involves an interplay between Dehn's work on the word problem in $\Gamma_{g}$ and classical invariant theory.
