Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.
Ultra-stretchable and Conductive Polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl Chitosan Composite Hydrogels with Low Modulus and Fast Self-Recoverability As Flexible Strain Sensors.

Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Flexible electronics are highly developed nowadays in human-machine interfaces (HMI). However, challenges such as lack of flexibility, conductivity, and versatility always greatly hindered flexible electronics applications. In this work, a multifunctional hybrid hydrogel (H-hydrogel) was prepared by combining two kinds of 1D polymer chains (polyacrylamide and polydopamine) and two kinds of 2D nanosheets (Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets) as quadruple crosslinkers. The introduced Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets are bonded with the PAM and PDA polymer chains by hydrogen bonds. This unique crosslinking and stable structure endow the H-hydrogel with advantages such as good flexibility, electrical conductivity, self-adhesion, and mechanical robustness. The two kinds of nanosheets not only improved the mechanical strength and conductivity of the H-hydrogel, but also helped to form the double electric layers (DELs) between the nanosheets and the bulk-free water phase inside the H-hydrogel. When utilized as the electrode of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), high electrical output performances were realized due to the dynamic balance of the DELs between the nanosheets and the H-hydrogel's inside water molecules. Moreover, flexible sensors, including triboelectric, and strain/pressure sensors, were achieved for human motion detection at low frequencies. This hydrogel is promising for HMI and e-skin.

Abstract:The rapid development of artificial skin, flexible sensors, and soft robotics proposes more requirements on conductive hydrogels, which should integrate more functions. However, it remains a great challenge to develop an integrated conductive hydrogel combining multiple sensations and self-powered properties. Herein, we develop a conductive MXene-cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-tamarind gum (TG)-polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel containing conductive ions by a facile fabrication process. A unique double network structure in the composite hydrogel was assembled by employing TG with an ionically cross-linked network and PAM with a UV photoinitiated cross-linked network, which imparted this hydrogel with toughness (38.8 KJ/m2) and high stretchability (2000% strain). The hydrogel also possessed high sensitivity (gauge factor = 5.23, 248% strain) due to the introduction of MXene and mobile ions, thus exhibiting multiple sensations towards pressure, strain, humidity, and temperature. More importantly, the hydrogel is self-powered and can generate an open-circuit-voltage of up to 164 mV from moisture flow in a very short time (18 s). We believe that the hydrogel not only shows great potential applications in artificial skin, flexible sensors, and soft robotics, but also contributes to the development of next-generation artificial intelligence.
Multiple-Stimuli-Responsive and Cellulose Conductive Ionic Hydrogel for Smart Wearable Devices and Thermal Actuators

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive hydrogels, such as conductive hydrogels and thermoresponsive hydrogels, have been explored extensively and are considered promising candidates for smart materials such as wearable devices and artificial muscles. However, most of the existing studies on stimulus-responsive hydrogels have mainly focused on their single stimulus-responsive property and have not explored multistimulus-responsive or multifunction properties. Although some works involved multifunctionality, the prepared hydrogels were incompatible. In this work, a multistimulus-responsive and multifunctional hydrogel system (carboxymethyl cellulose/poly acrylic-acrylamide) with good elasticity, superior flexibility, and stable conductivity was prepared. The prepared hydrogel not only showed excellent human motion detection and physiological signal response but also possessed the ability to respond to environmental temperature changes. By integrating a conductive hydrogel with a thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel to form a bilayer hydrogel, the prepared bilayer also functioned as two kinds of actuators owing to the different degrees of swelling and shrinking under different thermal stimuli. Furthermore, the different thermochromic properties of each layer in the bilayer hydrogel endowed the hydrogel with a thermoresponsive "smart" feature, the ability to display and conceal information. Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel has recently garnered significant research attention due to its potential applications in the field of wearable and flexible electronics. Nonetheless, the integration of multifunctional and synergistic advantages, including reliable electronic properties, high swelling capacity, exceptional mechanical characteristics, and self-adhesive properties, presents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we have developed an ionic conductive hydrogel through the co-polymerization of 4-Acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and sodium acrylate using UV curing technology. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, superior swelling capacity, and remarkable self-adhesive attributes. The hydrogel serves as a highly sensitive strain sensor, enabling precise monitoring of both substantial and subtle human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates the capability to adhere to human skin, functioning as a human-machine interface for the detection of physiological signals, including electromyogram (EMG) signals, with low interfacial impedance. This work is anticipated to yield a new class of stretchable and conductive materials with diverse potential applications, ranging from flexible sensors and wearable bio-electronics to contributions in the field of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Effectively integrating multiple properties of hydrogel materials for expanding the application field of soft materials is highly desirable. In this work, a fast initiation system was used to prepare hydrogels. Based on the dynamic hydrogen bonding interactions between two-dimensional graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs), polymer chains and metal ions , the hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties, great sensing performance and great self-healing property. Especially, the hydrogel exhibited sensitive response performance to near-infrared (NIR) light. A bilayer hydrogel actuator was assembled by combining the hydrogel with the temperature-sensitive Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogel. The bilayer hydrogel actuator exhibited stable responses to temperature, pH, and NIR light. The bilayer hydrogel could achieve bending close to 360° with good cycling stability in these three environments. As a proof-of-concept, the bilayer hydrogel was used as an identifiable fluid valve with selective passage which released fluids of different properties into corresponding containers. At the same time, the self-healing properties of the hydrogel and the actuation performance of the bilayer hydrogel were successfully used to simulate the wagging motion of the tail of puppy. The developed self-healing and sensing hydrogel and the assembled bilayer hydrogel actuator are expected to open new application fields in the health monitoring and soft robotics.

Abstract:Multi-stimuli- responsive mechanical strong stretchable hydrogel has grabbed extensive attention in recent years. Here, a novel stretchable conductive biocompatible near-infrared light(NIR)-/thermal-/pH-/ionic concentration- responsive carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTs)/graphene oxide (GO)/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAm) nanocomposite double network hydrogel was fabricated through a simple one-pot in situ free radical polymerization, which is initiated by ultraviolet (UV) light and using N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N-ethylcarbodiimidehydrochloride (EDC) and N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BAC) as cross-linkers respectively, instead of toxic organic molecules. When the concentration of CMCTs, GO, EDC and BAC is 22.50, 0.103, 7.50 and 0.467 mg/mL respectively, the obtained hydrogel sample owns the highest tensile strength of 1046 kPa at failure strain of 1286% and a corresponding compressive stress of 2.37 MPa at deformation of 90%. Besides, these hydrogels have an obvious pH-/thermal-/ionic concentration-responsive properties depending on the concentration of the above mentioned factors, and their good conductive property makes them as candidate material for healthcare biosensors. Finally, we attempt to design a novel thermal-/NIR-responsive double network structure bilayer hydrogel, which has the potential use as remote actuator in dangerous places in the future.

TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:Flexible sensors have shown great potential in remote health monitoring, body movements track, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. Hydrogels possess exceptional stretchability, flexibility and biocompatibility that that render them appealing candidates for wearable flexible sensors. Among them, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing conductive hydrogels to achieve multifunctional wearable sensing through using functional groups/additives/nanofillers to modify the hydrogel network in recent years. This review summarizes recent advances of applications of hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors, such as sweat sampling and flexible electrodes, strain/pressure sensors and touch panels, focuses on the multifunctional conductive hydrogels-based flexible wearable sensors with self-healing, self-adhesion, or anti-freezing capabilities. A brief introduction to representative synthesis methods and strategies of conductive hydrogels is also presented. In the end, we also provide a personal perspective on the future development, and address the remaining challenges in the commercialization of conductive hydrogels-based multifunctional flexible wearable sensors.

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels with multifunctionality as a type of fascinating material show potential application in various fields, such as biomedicine, tissue engineering, and wearable electronic devices. However, to combine the properties of autonomous self-healing property, high conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, and stimuli-responsive properties for hydrogel is still a great challenge. Herein, we present self-healing conductive hydrogels based on beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nanostructured polypyrrole (PPY). Among them, beta-CD served as the host molecule, and NIPAM served as the guest molecule, CNT as the physical cross-linker and conducting substrate, and PPY as the highly conductive component, respectively. The obtained hydrogels exhibit high conductivity, self-healing property, flexible and elastic mechanical property and rapid stimuli-responsive property both to temperature and near-infrared (NIR)-light together. The excellent characteristics of the hydrogels are further illustrated by pressure-dependent sensors, large-scale human motion monitoring sensors and self-healable electronic circuit. Cytotoxicity test indicated that they are nontoxic to L929 fibroblast cells and C2C12 myoblast cells. Taken together, these multifunctional hydrogels are excellent candidates for stimuli responsive electrical devices, artificial organs, and so on.
Triple‐network‐based conductive polymer hydrogel for soft and elastic bioelectronic interfaces

Abstract:A triple‐network conductive hydrogel is developed, which possesses ultra‐low Young's modulus, high stretchability, and low interfacial impedance. Low‐current neural stimulation is realized, of which the performance is superior to that of commercial electrodes. This achievement has facilitated significant progress in bridging the gap between electronics and soft tissue, opening up new possibilities for a seamless human–machine interface. Conductive polymer hydrogels have greatly improved the compatibility of electronic devices with biological tissues for human–machine interfacing. Hydrogels that possess low Young's modulus, low interfacial impedance, and high tensile properties facilitate high‐quality signal transmission across dynamic biointerfaces. Direct incorporation of elastomers with conductive polymers may result in undesirable mechanical and/or electrical performance. Here, a covalent cross‐linking network and an entanglement‐driven network with conductive poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) have been combined. The triple‐network conductive hydrogel shows high stretchability (with fracture strain up to 900%), low impedance (down to 91.2 Ω cm2), and reversible adhesion. Importantly, ultra‐low modulus (down to 6.3 kPa) and strain‐insensitive electrical/electrochemical performance were achieved, which provides a guarantee for low current stimulation. The material design will contribute to the progression of soft and conformal bioelectronic devices, and pave the way to future implantable electronics.

Abstract:Due to the good biocompatibility and easy regulation of hydrogels, hydrogel-based flexible sensors have flourished in the fields of wearable electronics, electronic skin, and soft robotics in recent years. The performance of conductive hydrogel-based sensors is greatly influenced by the properties of hydrogel functional materials. This review focuses on and summarizes the preparation strategies and general methods of functional conductive hydrogels for flexible sensors. Firstly, the general properties and improvement methods of conductive hydrogels are briefly introduced, mainly including electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. In practical applications, some additional functions that enable conductive hydrogel-based sensors to maintain excellent performance in the face of complex or harsh application conditions are indispensable. The strategies for endowing conductive hydrogels with additional functions mainly include self-healing properties, anti-swelling properties, anti-freezing properties, and self-adhesion properties are summarized in this review. The application of functional conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors, as well as the development prospects and challenges based on functional conductive hydrogels are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality show great potential in wearable smart devices. In this work, inspired by the nano-structured architecture strategy and natural mussel adhesive mechanism, a conductive hydrogel (AgPMP hydrogel) was fabricated through facile direct in-situ polymerization. Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and polydopamine (PDA) chains were integrated into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) gel matrix, with activated PNIPAM microgels (MGs) serving as nano-crosslinkers. The overall internal structure of the hydrogel presented a heterogeneous cross-linked mesh-like structure with numerous irregular wrinkles. The AgPMP hydrogel demonstrated significantly enhanced mechanical strength, achieving a remarkable stretchability of 1140% attributed to the nano-microstructured architecture built by AM-based network, nano-crosslinkers and Ag NWs. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of PDA and Ag NWs, the hydrogel exhibited impressive photothermal antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, in the presence of abundant active catechol groups, this hydrogel possessed adequate tissue-adhesive and self-healing abilities as well as good antioxidant property. Notably, the AgPMP hydrogel exhibited outstanding strain-sensitive conductivity. The resultant strain sensor owned high sensitivity with a guage factor (GF) up to 8.35 at strain of 250%. The stable response signals during continuous and gradual cycling proved its electrical durability and stability. Combined with the great merits of above performance, this sensor holds great promise for detecting huaman movements. The relative resistance change ranged from 16% to 64% as the finger bending angle changed from 30° to 90°. Thanks to its simple fabrication process, this multifunctional conductive hydrogel is expected to have widespread potential applications in tissue engineering, soft electronic skin and human-health monitoring.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels combine the properties of both hydrogels and conductors, making them soft, flexible, and biocompatible. These properties enable them to conform to irregular surfaces, stretch and bend without losing their electrical conductivity, and interface with biological systems. Conductive hydrogels can be utilized as conductive traces, electrodes, or as a matrix for flexible electronics. Exciting applications in sensors, tissue engineering, and human-machine interaction have been demonstrated worldwide. This review comprehensively covers the progress in this field, focusing on several main aspects: functional materials, performance improvement strategies, and wearable applications in human-related areas. Furthermore, the major approaches and challenges for improving their mechanical properties, conductivity, and long-term stability are systematically summarized.
Bioinspired 3D Printable, Self-Healable, and Stretchable Hydrogels with Multiple Conductivities for Skin-like Wearable Strain Sensors

Abstract:Bioinspired hydrogels have promising prospects in applications such as wearable devices, human health monitoring equipment, and soft robots due to their multifunctional sensing properties resembling natural skin. However, the preparation of intelligent hydrogels that provide feedback on multiple electronic signals simultaneously, such as human skin receptors, when stimulated by external contact pressure remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we designed a bioinspired hydrogel with multiple conductive capabilities by incorporating carbon nanotubes into a chelate of calcium ions with polyacrylic acid and sodium alginate. The bioinspired hydrogel consolidates self-healing ability, stretchability, 3D printability, and multiple conductivities. It can be fabricated as an integrated strain sensor with simultaneous piezoresistive and piezocapacitive performances, exhibiting sensitive (gauge factor of 6.29 in resistance mode and 1.25 kPa-1 in capacitance mode) responses to subtle pressure changes in the human body, such as finger flexion, knee flexion, and respiration. Furthermore, the bioinspired strain sensor sensitively and discriminatively recognizes the signatures written on it. Hence, we expect our ideas to provide inspiration for studies exploring the use of advanced hydrogels in multifunctional skin-like smart wearable devices.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels hold great promises in wearable soft electronics. However, the weak mechanical properties, low sensitivity and the absence of multifunctionalities (e.g., self-healing, self-adhesive, etc.) of the conventional conductive hydrogels limit their applications. Thus, developing multifunctional hydrogels may address some of these technical issues. In this work, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel strain sensor is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) into a mechanically robust poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) double network (DN) hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel sensor could span a wide spectrum of mechanical properties by simply tuning the polymer composition and the number of freezing-thawing cycles. In addition, the dynamic hydrogen bonding interactions endow the hydrogel sensor with self-healing property and reversible adhesiveness on diverse substrates. Moreover, the hydrogel sensor shows high sensitivity (Gauge Factor from 2.21 to 3.82) and can precisely detect some subtle human motions (e.g., pulse and vocal cord vibration). This work provides useful insights into the development of conductive hydrogel-based wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogels capable of transparent and conductive behaviors are promising materials for flexible electronics. The individual increase of conducting units always produces a decrease on their transparency, leading to limited application scope. Here, a high-performance hydrogel sensor with high transparency as well as multi-responsive self-healability is developed through in situ polymerization combined with ultra-low content (1.08×10 -4 wt%) of carboxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) and self-assembled catechin nanoparticles (NPs) as the electron bridging agents. Since the substantial interfacial interactions including π-π and hydrogen bonds and markedly decreased contact resistance between c-MWCNTs, the target hydrogel exhibits high transparency of 90% at 550 nm and good conductivity of 0.19 S/m. Besides, the target hydrogel delivers series of smart behaviors including outstanding biocompatibility, remarkable notch-insensitivity, strong adhesion, multi-responsive self-healing property and electromechanical stability ranging from 0.1% to high strain of 900%. These prominent performance merits make this emerging hydrogel sensor highly potential in the next-generation flexible and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive hydrogels are of great significance in soft robotics, wearable electronic devices, and sensors. Near-infrared (NIR) light is considered an ideal stimulus as it can trigger the response behaviour remotely and precisely. In this work, a smart flexible stimuli-responsive hydrogel with excellent photothermal property and decent conductivity are prepared by incorporating MXene nanosheets into the physically cross-linked PNIPAM hydrogel matrix. Because of outstanding photothermal effect and dispersion of MXene, the composite hydrogel exhibits rapid photothermal responsiveness and excellent photothermal stability under the NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the anisotropic bilayer hydrogel actuator shows fast and controllable light-driven bending behavior, which can be used as a light-controlled soft manipulator. Meanwhile, the hydrogel sensor exhibits cycling stability and good durability in detecting various deformation and real-time human activities. Therefore, the present study involving the fabrication of MXene nanocomposite hydrogels for potential applications in remotely controlled actuator and wearable electronic device provides a new method for the development of photothermal responsive conductive hydrogels.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Intelligent hydrogel materials have significant potential for soft robotic applications due to their sharply and reversibly responding to various external stimuli. However, obtaining a biomimetic hydrogel actuator with integrated self-sensing and self-actuation properties is still a great challenge. Herein, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer polyaniline (PANI) into a double network poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PNA/PVA) hydrogel. The as-prepared conductive PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel could span a wide range of mechanical properties and phase transition temperatures by simply tuning polymer composition. When combined the active PNA/PVA/PANI layer with a passive polyacrylamide (PAAM) layer, a bilayer hydrogel actuator exhibits superior actuation ability with high bending speeds by the thermal stimulation. In addition, the introduction of PANI component endows the PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel with excellent electrical conductivity up to 3.91 ± 0.15 S/m and ultrahigh-efficiency of photothermal conversion. Consequently, the PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel not only exhibits piezoresistive strain/pressure sensing in motion recognition and physiological signal monitoring, but also displays a variety of precise and remotely driven photo-responsive locomotion such as contraction, bending, light tracking and weightlifting by locally near-infrared (NIR) illumination. Furthermore, this hydrogel can simultaneously detect these actuation states via real-time resistance change, achieving closed-loop monitoring and sensing feedback. The self-sensing actuation performance has been fully demonstrated by remotely controlling a hydrogel octopus's grasping and object moving activities. The multi-responsiveness and real-time sensory feedback will inspire this material to be applied in novel soft biomimetic actuating materials and systems.
