Abstract:The information fusion technique can integrate a large amount of data and knowledge representing the same real-world object and obtain a consistent, accurate, and useful representation of that object. The data may be independent or redundant, and can be obtained by different sensors at the same time or at different times. A suitable combination of investigative methods can substantially increase the profit of information in comparison with that from a single sensor. Multi-sensor information fusion has been a key issue in sensor research since the 1970s, and it has been applied in many fields. For example, manufacturing and process control industries can generate a lot of data, which have real, actionable business value. The fusion of these data can greatly improve productivity through digitization. The goal of this special issue is to report innovative ideas and solutions for multi-sensor information fusion in the emerging applications era, focusing on development, adoption, and applications.

Abstract:In real applications, sensors may work in complicated environments; thus, how to measure the uncertain degree of sensor reports before applying sensor data fusion is a big challenge. To address this issue, an improved belief entropy–based uncertainty management approach for sensor data fusion is proposed in this article. First, the sensor report is modeled as the body of evidence in Dempster–Shafer framework. Then, the uncertainty measure of each body of evidence is based on the subjective uncertainty represented as the evidence sufficiency and evidence importance, and the objective uncertainty measure is expressed as the improved belief entropy. Evidence modification of conflict sensor data is based on the proposed uncertainty management approach before evidence fusion with Dempster’s rule of combination. Finally, the fusion result can be applied in real applications. A case study on sensor data fusion for fault diagnosis is presented to show the rationality of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presented a multi-source uncertain data fusion model.This model analyzed and processed uncertain information from the aspects of rationality of information,reliability of sensors and comparability of information.The sensor information was filtrated by consistency of information and dependability of sensors,which dealt with conflicting information and false information.The model taking an example of multi-sensor target recognition was build and simulated.The results showed that this fusion model ensures correctness of fusion output when environment is changefully and reliability of sensors decreases.

Dynamic Information Fusion in Multi-Source Incomplete Interval-Valued Information System with Variation of Information Sources and Attributes

Abstract:Interval-valued data describe the random phenomenon that abounds in the real world, a pivotal research orientation in uncertainty processing. With the rapid development of big data, we may gather information from multiple information sources. To effectively acquire knowledge from multiple information sources, information fusion is commonly used to get a unified representation. However, sometimes data gathered from multiple sources may be lost; it is meaningful and necessary to study the fusion of multi-source incomplete interval-valued data. We propose a novel information fusion method based on information entropy for multi-source incomplete interval-valued data and four incremental fusion mechanisms characterized by the change in information sources and attributes. The corresponding static and dynamic fusion algorithms are designed, and their time complexities are analyzed. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the mean, max, and min fusion methods. Furthermore, the four incremental fusion mechanisms reduced the runtime compared with the static fusion mechanism.

Abstract:Visual question answering automatically answers natural language questions according to the content of an image or video. The task is challenging because it requires the understanding of semantic information in the textual and visual channels, as well as their interplay. A typical solver is composed of three components: feature extraction from singular modality, feature fusion between visual and textual channels, and answer prediction based on the learnt joint representation. Among them, information fusion plays a key role in enhancing the overall accuracy and various types of approaches have been proposed, such as simple vector operators, deep neural networks, bilinear pooling, attention mechanisms, and memory networks. The primary objective of this survey is to provide a clear organization and comprehensive review on the ever-proposed fusion techniques in the domain of visual question answering. We propose an abstract fusion framework that can fit the majority of existing VQA models, making it convenient for readers to quickly understand their key contributions. Finally, we summarize the effective fusion strategies that have been widely adopted so as to benefit readers in their model design.

Abstract:We propose and advocate basic principles for the fusion of incomplete or uncertain information items, that should apply regardless of the formalism adopted for representing pieces of information coming from several sources. This formalism can be based on sets, logic, partial orders, possibility theory, belief functions or imprecise probabilities. We propose a general notion of information item representing incomplete or uncertain information about the values of an entity of interest. It is supposed to rank such values in terms of relative plausibility, and explicitly point out impossible values. Basic issues affecting the results of the fusion process, such as relative information content and consistency of information items, as well as their mutual consistency, are discussed. For each representation setting, we present fusion rules that obey our principles, and compare them to postulates specific to the representation proposed in the past. In the crudest (Boolean) representation setting (using a set of possible values), we show that the understanding of the set in terms of most plausible values, or in terms of non-impossible ones matters for choosing a relevant fusion rule. Especially, in the latter case our principles justify the method of maximal consistent subsets, while the former is related to the fusion of logical bases. Then we consider several formal settings for incomplete or uncertain information items, where our postulates are instantiated: plausibility orderings, qualitative and quantitative possibility distributions, belief functions and convex sets of probabilities. The aim of this paper is to provide a unified picture of fusion rules across various uncertainty representation settings.

Abstract:The fusion of infrared and visible imagery plays a crucial role in environmental monitoring. Existing approaches aim to achieve high-quality perceptual results for human observers and robust outcomes for machine-based high-level tasks by adopting a joint design of fusion and segmentation. However, design constraints imposed by predetermined fusion rules limit the precision of high-level tasks, and drawbacks in the image domains to be fused are often overlooked. This letter presents a novel semantic-powered infrared and visible image fusion framework to address these issues. The key feature of our approach is the utilization of trainable gains and weights in enhancement and fusion processes, influenced solely by segmentation and serving as uncertainty parameters. We propose a two-stage training strategy: initially, training a combined enhancement and fusion network with random uncertainty parameters, followed by the estimation of semantic-driven uncertainty parameters. The enhancement and fusion process is optimized within the Laplacian pyramid framework to ensure efficient computation. Experimental results highlight the significance of modeling the fusion process with uncertainty for achieving satisfactory fusion and segmentation outcomes.

Abstract:Information fusion refers to derive an overall precise description of data by using certain fusion technique for utilizing the complementary information from multiple sources of data, which can facilitate effective decision-making, prediction and classification, etc. Multi-source homogeneous data, characterizing the data type of variables in the sample in form of one type (i.e., numerical or categorical) in different information sources, which widely exists in many practical applications. This paper concentrates on efficient fusion of multi-source homogeneous data with a data-level fusion model which involves the consolidation of multiple information sources and unsupervised attribute selection of the fused data. A unified description and modeling method of a multi-source homogeneous information system is introduced. The neighborhood rough sets model is used to construct the neighborhood granular structure, which uses the idea of granular computing to build methods of uncertainty measures. Given the uncertainty of fusing multiple information sources, Sup–Inf fusion functions are developed based on the proposed uncertainty measures, which can fuse the multi-source homogeneous information system into a single-source information system. Finally, an unsupervised attribute selection approach is employed to eliminate redundant attribute of the single-source information system. Theoretical analysis and comprehensive experiments on several datasets demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of our method.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel unified and unsupervised end-to-end image fusion network, termed as U2Fusion, which is capable of solving different fusion problems, including multi-modal, multi-exposure, and multi-focus cases. Using feature extraction and information measurement, U2Fusion automatically estimates the importance of corresponding source images and comes up with adaptive information preservation degrees. Hence, different fusion tasks are unified in the same framework. Based on the adaptive degrees, a network is trained to preserve the adaptive similarity between the fusion result and source images. Therefore, the stumbling blocks in applying deep learning for image fusion, e.g., the requirement of ground-truth and specifically designed metrics, are greatly mitigated. By avoiding the loss of previous fusion capabilities when training a single model for different tasks sequentially, we obtain a unified model that is applicable to multiple fusion tasks. Moreover, a new aligned infrared and visible image dataset, RoadScene (available at https://github.com/hanna-xu/RoadScene), is released to provide a new option for benchmark evaluation. Qualitative and quantitative experimental results on three typical image fusion tasks validate the effectiveness and universality of U2Fusion. Abstract:The human perception to the outside world is the results of action among brain and many organs. For example, the intelligent robots that people currently investigate can have many sensors for sense of vision, sense of hearing, sense of taste, sense of smell, sense of touch, sense of pain, sense of heat, sense of force, sense of slide, sense of approach (Luo, 2002). All these sensors provide different profile information of scene in same environment. To use suitable techniques for assorting with various sensors and combining their obtained information, the theories and methods of multi-sensor fusion are required. Multi-sensor information fusion is a basic ability of human beings. Single sensor can only provide incomplete, un-accurate, vague, uncertainty information. Sometimes, information obtained by different sensors can even be contradictory. Human beings have the ability to combine the information obtained by different organs and then make estimation and decision for environment and events. Using computer to perform multi-sensor information fusion can be considered as a simulation of the function of human brain for treating complex problems. Multi-sensor information fusion consists of operating on the information data come from various sensors and obtaining more comprehensive, accurate, and robust results than that obtained from single sensor. Fusion can be defined as the process of combined treating of data acquired from multiple sensors, as well as assorting, optimizing and conforming of these data to increase the ability of extracting information and improving the decision capability. Fusion can extend the coverage for space and time information, reducing the fuzziness, increasing the reliability of making decision, and the robustness of systems. Image fusion is a particular type of multi-sensor fusion, which takes images as operating objects. In a more general sense of image engineering (Zhang, 2006), the combination of multi-resolution images also can be counted as a fusion process. In this article, however, the emphasis is put on the information fusion of multi-sensor images.

Abstract:Information fusion is capable of fusing and transforming information originated from multiple sources into an integrated representation. As an important representative of information, interval-valued ordered data aims at characterizing inaccurate and ambiguous information. However, existing methods are inappropriate when applied to the multi-source fusion for them. In addition, it is inevitable that in daily-life the sources and attributes of multi-source information systems may update at the same time. Hence there is a need to fuse data as efficiently as possible. Inspired by these deficiencies, we pay attention to the effective and efficient fusion of multi-source interval-valued ordered data in varieties of cases. First, the concepts of fuzzy dominance relation and dominance classes based on it are put forward between any two samples of interval-valued ordered information systems. Second, we define the fuzzy dominating and dominated conditional entropy. Then the fusion model is established and it is multi-source interval-valued ordered data oriented. Furthermore, it is true that there are numerous real-life applications related to concurrent change of both sources and attributes. Consequently, we design four incremental mechanisms and algorithms for fusing multi-source interval-valued data on the ground of the static condition. Eventually, a series of experiments is carried out on twelve datasets to verify that the proposed fusion approach outperforms other comparative methods on efficacy. Meanwhile, our incremental fusion algorithms are efficient compared with the static one for updating multi-source interval-valued data when sources and attributes are in the simultaneous variation.

Abstract:This paper will focus on the process of 'fusing' several observations or models of uncertainty into a single resultant model. Many existing approaches to fusion use subjective quantities such as 'strengths of belief' and process these quantities with heuristic algorithms. This paper argues in favor of quantities that can be objectively measured, as opposed to the subjective 'strength of belief' values. This paper will focus on probability distributions, and more importantly, structures that denote sets of probability distributions known as 'credal sets'. The novel aspect of this paper will be a taxonomy of models of fusion that use specific types of credal sets, namely probability interval distributions and Dempster-Shafer models. An objective requirement for information fusion algorithms is provided, and is satisfied by all models of fusion presented in this paper. Dempster's rule of combination is shown to not satisfy this requirement. This paper will also assess the computational challenges involved for the proposed fusion approaches.

Abstract:Abstract Under complex battlefield situation, the situation information is instantaneous and changeable. The uncertain information always causes difficulty in acquisition information and miscalculation, and lead to low efficiency and poor accuracy for aircraft situation awareness. In order to solve the problem, in this paper it proposes a deep-learning based multi-sensor situation awareness data fusion method. With data acquitted from multiple sensors in multi-band and multi-angle, it realizes multi-sensor information data fusion by comparing and analysing of two AI data fusion methods that one is based on classical evidence theory and the other is based on deep learning. The simulation results indicate that the deep-learning based data fusion method presents higher efficiency in dealing with the environment information fusion with large evidence conflict.

Abstract:With the development of the Internet, the increase of information sources and speed of information release and transmission have led to a sharp increase in the amount of information. To enable users finding more accurate and reliable information in the large heterogeneous multi-source data, data fusion technology becomes more and more important. Data fusion technology structuralizes and integrates heterogeneous data from different sources which greatly improves the comprehensiveness, availability and extensibility of data. This paper proposes a general multi-source data fusion framework. The framework transforms multi-source structured data, semi-structured data and unstructured data into unified data format described by RDF (Resource Description Framework) standard, and then realizes information fusion through data fusion algorithm, to solve the heterogeneity and semantic conflict in multi-source data fusion under the big data environment.

Abstract:Multi-fidelity information fusion has attracted increasing attention in the recent for its promising in engineering design and optimization. However, most of the existing fusion methods are sensitive to the correlation between low-fidelity (LF) and high-fidelity (HF) information, which could be further improved in terms of approximation performance. To address this problem, we develop a feature mapping-based hierarchical surrogate model for the fusion of LF and HF information. Compared to most current models, the presented model has a distinct hierarchical structure, where the LF model is first built through radial basis function. Then, a mapping relationship is established to describe the correlation between the transitional prediction and the HF prediction, and the mapping relationship is optimized using the Rayleigh quotient. Finally, a surrogate model is developed that can fuse information with different fidelities. To verify the effectiveness of the developed model, widely used numerical problems are analyzed, and five state-of-the-art methods are selected as comparative surrogates. Moreover, one engineering case is investigated to illustrate the capability of the proposed model in support of complex engineering design. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms other methods in 97.436% of the thirteen test problems under three different quantitative evaluations.

Abstract:In order to investigate the impacts of different information fusion techniques on change detection, a sequential fusion strategy combining pan-sharpening with decision level fusion is introduced into change detection from multi-temporal remotely sensed images. Generally, change map from multi-temporal remote sensing images using any single method or single kind of data source may contain a number of omission/commission errors, degrading the detection accuracy to a great extent. To take advantage of the merits of multi-resolution image and multiple information fusion schemes, the proposed procedure consists of two steps: (1) change detection from pan-sharpened images, and (2) final change detection map generation by decision level fusion. Impacts of different fusion techniques on change detection results are evaluated by unsupervised similarity metric and supervised accuracy indices. Multi-temporal QuickBird and ALOS images are used for experiments. The experimental results demonstrate the positive impacts of different fusion strategies on change detection. Especially, pan-sharpening techniques improve spatial resolution and image quality, which effectively reduces the omission errors in change detection; and decision level fusion integrates the change maps from spatially enhanced fusion datasets and can well reduce the commission errors. Therefore, the overall accuracy of change detection can be increased step by step by the proposed sequential fusion framework.
