Abstract:A series of cobalt(II) complexes bearing 3-aryliminomethyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehydes (tridentate [NOO] ligands) was prepared and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that a dinuclear centrosymmetrical structure formed, in which each cobalt atom is surrounded by two bridged ligands and two acetate groups as a distorted octahedron. These dinuclear cobalt complexes displayed high catalytic activities for the polymerization of 1,3-butdiene on activation with organoaluminum cocatalysts to yield cis-1,4-polybutadiene with high selectivity. Ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) was found to be the most efficient cocatalyst resulting in high conversion of butadiene and cis-1,4 content in the polymers with moderate molecular weight. The high catalytic activity and stereoselectivity could be achieved in a wide range of reaction conditions. All the dinuclear cobalt complexes (C1-C6) yielded predominantly cis-1,4-polybutadienes (> 96%) with negligible amounts of trans-1,4 (< 2.4%) and 1,2-vinyl (< 1.5%) products under the Al/Co molar ratio of 80 at 25 °C. The ligand modification by varying the substituents at the 4-position of phenol and on the imino-N aryl ring showed slight influence on the catalytic activity and microstructure of the resulting polymers.

Abstract:A series of bis{[2-(4,5-diphenylimidazolyl)phenylimino]phenolate}cobalt(II) complexes (C1–C4) has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrated that the cobalt center was coordinated by two [NNO–] ligands and adopted a slightly distorted octahedronal geometry. The type of cocatalyst had a remarkable influence on the catalytic properties and ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) was proved to be more efficient for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene to produce higher conversion of butadiene and cis-1,4 content of polybutadienes. On activation with EASC, all the cobalt complexes displayed high catalytic activity for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene. The microstructure determined by FT-IR and NMR spectra demonstrated that high cis-1,4 contents in the resulting polymers were obtained. The conversion of butadiene, microstructure, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polybutadienes were influenced by the reaction parameters and ligand structure.

Abstract:A series of cobalt dicholoride complexes (1 similar to 4) bearing [2-(4, 5-diphenylimidazolyl) phenylimino phenol ligands ([N<^>N<^>O] tridentate ligands) have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR spectra and elemental analysis. These cobalt complexes were applied in the stereospecific polymerization of 1, 3-butadiene under various reaction parameters. The type of cocatalyst, AI/Co molar ratio, reaction temperature and ligand structure of cobalt complexes were investigated in order to verify their influences on the catalytic activity and the properties of resulting polymers. Among the Al-based cocatalysts, ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) was proven to be the best cocatalyst, yielding higher conversion of butadiene and cis-1,4 content of polybutadienes. The increase of Al/Co molar ratio enhanced the conversion of butadiene and slightly affected the molecular weight and microstructure of polymers. The catalytic systems displayed good thermal stability in the temperature range of 25 similar to 90 degrees C; however, the higher temperature led to the lower molecular weight and broader molecular weight distribution, and the decrease in the cis-1,4 content and the increase in the trans-1, 4 and 1,2 content. Upon activation with EASC, all the cobalt complexes displayed high catalytic activity for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, and high cis-1,4 contents in the resulting polymers were obtained.

Abstract:We present here a new polymerisation route for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers. Decarbonylative polyadditions of diyne monomers [bis(4-ethynylphenyl) dimethylsilane, 4,4'-diethynylbiphenyl, and 1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene] with respective terephthaloyl dichloride and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbonyl trichloride catalyzed by [Rh(cod) Cl](2)/PPh3, [Rh(nbd)Cl]2/PPh3, [RhCp*Cl-2](2)/PPh3, [Rh(cod)(PPh3)(2)]+PF6-, or [Rh(cod)(PPh2)(CH2)(4)(PPh2)]+BF4- (cod 1,5-cyclooctadiene, nbd 2,5-norbornadiene, Cp* = pentamethyl cyclopentadienyl), proceed smoothly, producing linear and hyperbranched poly(arylene chloro Z-vinylene)s (PACVs) in regio- and stereoselective manners with high molecular weights (absolute M-w up to 5.31 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 92%). Model reactions are designed to confirm the chemical structures of the PACVs. The resultant polymers are processable and enjoy high thermal stability. The linear PAVCs can undergo thermal curing at high temperatures and compared with their hyperbranched counterparts, they are more electronically conjugated due to the para-conjugation effect, as revealed by both experimental and theoretical studies. The light emissions of linear PAVCs with twisted tetraphenylethene units are enhanced by aggregate formation, demonstrating an unusual aggregation-enhanced emission characteristic.

Abstract:A series of imido-vanadium complexes containing bulky aryloxo ligand have been isolated and employed as catalyst in ethylene (co)polymerization. The introduction of bulky ligand in the vanadium complex structure could promote the thermal stability of catalyst in ethylene polymerization. Especially the corresponding catalysts remain good activity in the ethylene copolymerization with polar monomers such as 10-undecen-1-ol (UOH) and methyl 10-undecenoate (UA). In the attempted copolymerization with acrylate monomer, the vanadium catalysts still show moderate activity but only afford polyethylene.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:The dinuclear and trivalent complex {[(Me3Si)NCH2CH2](2)N(Me3Si)}(2)V-2(mu-Cl)2 (1) is the precursor to mono- and dinuclear alkyl derivatives that are thermally stable. For example, treatment with MeLi gives a stable methyl derivative, probably isostructural with 1, which upon further treatment with pyridine affords the mononuclear complex {[(Me3Si)NCH2CH2](2)N(Me3Si)}V(CH3)(pyridine) (2). However, reaction of 1 with Me2AlCl, AlMe3, or PMAO-IP yields the tetrametallic species {[(Me3Si)NCH2CH2](2)N(Me3Si)}(2)V-2(mu-Cl)(2)(AlMe2)(2) (3), where the central core of 1 was preserved except for the vanadium centers, which were reduced to the divalent state. The two Me2Al residues remained coordinated to the amido ligand. The reduction of vanadium to the divalent state relates to the relatively short life of 1 as an ethylene polymerization catalyst. A similar reaction of 1 with AlCl3 resulted in disproportionation forming the tetravalent complex {[(Me3Si)NCH2CH2](2)N(Me3Si)}VCl2AlCl3 (4) and the pentanuclear mixed-valent V(II)/V(III) species [(AlCl2){[(Me3Si)NCH2CH2](2)N(Me3Si)}V](2)[(mu-Cl)6V].(toluene)(2) (5). The fact that complex 5 contains a divalent vanadium atom stripped of its ligand system indicates that two different reaction mechanisms are operating to reduce the vanadium center and that the differing Lewis acidity of the two aluminum species is the determining factor.

Abstract:Facile synthesis of high optically active helical polymers from achiral monomers still remains a great challenge. In this work, two chiral Ni(II) catalysts bearing chiral R- or S-2a ligands were facilely prepared which can efficiently initiate the living/controlled polymerization of allene monomers and afford well-defined polyallenes in high yields with controlled molecular masses (M ns) and low molecular mass distributions (M w/M ns). The catalysts showed interesting regioselectivity on the cumulated double bonds of allene monomers, as the polymerizations were highly selective which occurred on 2,3-double bonds. Moreover, the polymerization of achiral allene monomers using chiral Ni(II) catalysts showed remarkable helix-sense selectivity. The yielded polyallenes exhibited high optical activity due to the formation of a predominant one-handed helix as revealed by circular dichroism, UV–vis, and direct atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations as well. The predominant one-handed helicity of the generated polyallenes was solely determined by the chirality of the Ni(II) catalysts.

Abstract:Five novel vanadium(III) complexes [PhN = C(R-2)CHC(R-1)O]VCl2(THF)(2) (4a: R-1 = Ph, R-2 = CF3; 4b: R-1 =t-Bu, R-2 = CF3; 4c: R-1 = CF3, R-2 = CH3; 4d: R-1 = Ph, R-2 = CH3; 4e: R-1 = Ph, R-2 = H) have been synthesized and characterized. On activation with Et2AlCl, all the complexes, in the presence of ethyl trichloroacetate (ETA) as a promoter, are highly active precatalysts for ethylene polymerization, and produce high molecular weight and linear polymers. Catalyst activities more than 16.8 kg PE/mmolv h bar and weight-average molecular weights higher than 173 kg/ mol were observed under mild conditions. The copolymerizations of ethylene and norbornene or 1-hexene with the precatalysts were also explored, which leads to high molecular weight copolymers with high comonomer incorporation. Catalyst activity, comonomer incorporation, and polymer molecular weight as well as polydispersity index can be controlled over a wide range by the variation of precatalyst structure and the reaction parameters such as Al/V molar ratio, comonomer feed concentration, and polymerization temperature. Abstract:We have developed a new series of single-component air- and moisture-stable catalysts for alkyne polymerization based on chloro-nickel and chloro-cobalt complexes containing phosphine ligands. The polymerization of p-diethynylbenzene initiated by these complexes proceeds smoothly in the presence of amines at room temperature to afford soluble π-conjugated polymers in yields as high as 81% with weight-average molecular weight up to 17 600.

Abstract:Allenes are important 2π building blocks in organic synthesis and engage as 2-carbon components in many metal-catalyzed reactions. Wender and co-workers discovered that methyl substituents on the terminal allene double bond counterintuitively change the reactivities of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs). More sterically encumbered allenes afford higher cycloadduct yields, and such effects are also observed in other Rh(I)-catalyzed intermolecular cycloadditions. Through density functional theory calculations (B3LYP and M06) and experiment, we explored this enigmatic reactivity and selectivity of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with VCPs. The apparent low reactivity of terminally unsubstituted allenes is associated with a competing allene dimerization that irreversibly sequesters rhodium. With terminally substituted allenes, steric repulsion between the terminal substituents significantly increases the barrier of allene dimerization while the barrier of the (5 + 2) cycloaddition is not affected, and thus the cycloaddition prevails. Computation has also revealed the origin of chemoselectivity in (5 + 2) cycloadditions with allene-ynes. Although simple allene and acetylene have similar reaction barriers, intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions of allene-ynes occur exclusively at the terminal allene double bond. The terminal double bond is more reactive due to the enhanced d-π* backdonation. At the same time, insertion of the internal double bond of an allene-yne has a higher barrier as it would break π conjugation. Substituted alkynes are more difficult to insert compared with acetylene, because of the steric repulsion from the additional substituents. This leads to the greater reactivity of the allene double bond relative to the alkynyl group in allene-ynes.
Palladium/Benzoic Acid-Catalyzed Regio- and Stereoselective Polymerization of Internal Diynes and Diols Through C(sp(3))-H Activation

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:A series of vanadium catalysts with bulky bis(N-heterocyclic carbenes) (bis-NHCs) ligands were synthesized by in-situ reaction. With diethylaluminum chloride (AlEt2Cl) as cocatalyst and ethyl trichloroacetate (ETA) as activator, these catalysts exhibit good activity when used to catalyze ethylene (co)polymerization. The structure of the catalyst, especially the bridging carbons number of the bis-NHCs ligands, is related to the performance of the (co)polymer. When the bis-NHCs ligand with tBu substituted, increased the bridging carbons number of the bis-NHCs ligand is easier to obtain higher molecular weight polymers. But when the bis-NHCs ligand with 2,6-diisopropyl phenyl substituted, the increase of the bridging carbons number is not conducive to obtaining higher molecular weight polymers. Under the same concentration of comonomer, the increase of the bis-NHCs ligand bridged carbon number of the V-complexes is more beneficial to obtain the copolymer with high norbornene (NB) content.
Phenol-Yne Click Polymerization: an Efficient Technique to Facilely Access Regio- and Stereoregular Poly(Vinylene Ether Ketone)S

Abstract:Alkyne-based click polymerizations have been well-established. However, in order to expand the family to synthesize polymers with new structures and novel properties, new types of click polymerizations are highly demanded. In this study, for the first time, we established a new efficient and powerful phenol-yne click polymerization. The activated diynes and diphenols could be facilely polymerized in the presence of the Lewis base catalyst of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) under mild reaction conditions. Regio-and stereoregular poly(vinylene ether ketone)s (PVEKs) with high molecular weights (up to 35200) were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99.0 %). The reaction mechanism was well explained under the assistance of density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Furthermore, since the vinyl ether sequence acts as a stable but acid-liable linkage, the polymers could be decomposed under acid conditions, rendering them applicable in biomedical and environmental fields.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of a series of nickel acetylides and chlorides containing different phosphine and alkynyl ligands: NiL2(CCR)2; NiL2(CCR)Cl and NiL2Cl2 (L2=(PPh3)2, (PBu3)2 and Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2; R=p-C6H4CCH, C6H5, H, CH2OH and CH2OCOCH3), towards p-diethynylbenzene polymerization is compared. The catalytic property of these acetylides is related to chlorine, phosphines and alkynyl ligands bonded to the metal atoms. The polarity, steric hindrance and electron-donating ability of ligands are main factors influencing the catalytic activity of these complexes. Nickel acetylides were found to be novel efficient initiating systems for the alkyne polymerization. The polymerization proceeds under mild conditions to give soluble π-conjugated polymers with weight average molecular weights as high as 4.8×104 in yields as high as 95%.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a poly(1-chloro-2-phenylacetylene) derivative with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the phenyl group. A combination of an N-heterocyclic carbene-based Pd catalyst (NHC-Pd) with silver trifluoromethyl sulfonate (AgOTf) formed an active catalytic system for the polymerization of 1-chloro-2-(para-substituted)-phenylacetylenes. Based on this active catalytic system, functional poly(di-substituted acetylene) (PDSA) bearing an aldehyde group (P3) was obtained in high yield. The exceptional P3 bearing a reactive aldehyde group on its side chain was used as a precursor to be subsequently modified with amines to generate a novel PDSA (P3-ppm) possessing Schiff-base functionalities in good yield.

Abstract:Bimetallic complexes have attracted much attention due to their excellent catalytic performances in many fields. Herein six xanthene-bridged bis-salicylaldiminato [ON] bidentate binuclear vanadium(IV) complexes V 2 L 1 -V 2 L 6 were synthesized and characterized by MALDI-TOF-MS, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and the crystal structures of V 2 L 1 and V 2 L 2 were further characterized by XRD, in which each vanadium atom was found coordinated with three O, one Cl and one N atoms to form a twisted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. Under Et 2 AlCl and ethyl trichloroacetate (ETA) activation, all the binuclear vanadium(IV) complexes exhibited high activity over 10 6 g/mol(V)·h·atm towards ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with 1-hexene. The activity of binuclear V 2 L 4 for ethylene polymerization was much higher than that of its mononuclear counterpart VL , indicating that strong bimetallic synergetic effect existed in these binuclear vanadium complexes. The substituents on the ligands have a great influence on the catalytic performances of the vanadium complexes. The introduction of bulky isopropyl group into the ligand had little effect on the activity, but the introduction of electron-withdrawing fluorine atoms could significantly increase the activity, suggesting that the electronic, rather than the steric factors had a greater impact. As the amount of fluorine substituent on the iminophenyl moiety of the complex increased, the catalytic activity increased appreciably. With five fluorine atoms on the benzene ring of the imine moiety, the complex V 2 L 6 showed the highest activity of 1.10 × 10 7 g/mol(V)·h·atm for ethylene polymerization to produce the highest molecular weight of polyethylene. Furthermore, the introduction of fluorine atoms into ligands could also increase the catalytic activity of vanadium complexes, comonomer incorporation and molecular weight of obtained copolymer towards ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization. The highest copolymerization activity of V 2 L 6 was 4.13 × 10 6 g/molV·h·atm, which was more than three time that of the fluorine-free complex V 2 L 1 . The insertion rate of 1-hexene for the fluorine-containing complex V 2 L 3 - V 2 L 6 was also higher than that for V 2 L 1 .

Abstract:<p>Ring opening metathesis polymerization of norbornene (NBE) by binuclear vanadium alkylidene in‐situ formed from dialkyl complexes was investigated. Higher activities were observed by the binuclear system than mononuclear analogues. Especially the cyclic polymers were obtained and demonstrated. It is proposed that cyclic binuclear vanadium alkylidene was afforded due to the intramolecular chain‐transfer reaction. The size of polymer ring could be adjusted by the vanadium catalyst structure and polymerization temperature. Controlled Chain-Growth Polymerization via Propargyl/Allenyl Palladium Intermediates

Abstract:In contrast to allyl palladium complexes, propargylic/allenylic palladium speicies display complex reactivities that limit their implementation in polymer chemistry, especially for chain-growth polymerizations. Here we report the the first example of controlled chain-growth polymerization via propargyl/allenyl palladium intermediates. Vinylidenecyclopropane 1,1-dicarboxylate (VDCP), a unique allenylic electrophile, selectively reacts via the sigma-allenyl palladium complex rather than the more common pi-propargyl pathway, thereby unlocking a chain-growth process. Based on this concept, precise synthesis of alkyne-backbone polymers is realized, featuring fast rate, high molecular weight, narrow dispersity, high chemoselectivity, and excellent end-group fidelity. We demonstrate preparation of unsaturated macromolecules with advanced sequences and architectures using this method, including block, gradient, and graft copolymers.
