Challenges and innovations during the COVID-19 pandemic: An international survey of music therapy educators

She is a board-certified music therapist and a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has been a music therapy educator for over 25 years,writing music therapy education texts and conducting research related to music therapy education and training. Her research areas including in exploring the use of music therapy with individuals in eating disorder treatment and the use of music-based interventions with critically ill patients and families. She has extensive clinical experience working with clients and their families with complex profiles and comorbid diagnoses. She has extensively published peer-reviewed articles based on her research,edited,and co-authored four books,which most recently includes Clinical decision-making in music therapy: Case studies.Alison Short (PhD) is Senior Lecturer in Music Therapy in the School of Humanities and Communications Arts at Western Sydney University,Sydney,Australia. She is internationally accredited in music therapy and Guided Imagery and Music,also having qualifications in university learning and teaching. Alison has investigated and published around music therapy training and professional development based on her 30-years of education experience. Her additional extensive clinical and research interests focus on clinical and public health applications such as using music to address noise sensitivity in indoor environments (hospital,restaurants),applications of music and music therapy for medical treatments (cardiac surgery,fertility treatment) and developing a continuum model to delineate music therapy in relation to other music applications for health. Alison is an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Music Therapy Association and an appointed member of the Council of the World Federation of Music Therapy,representing Australia and New Zealand.

Abstract:Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic affected educational institutions and clinical organizations, with universities and clinical sites experiencing a complete lock down with unexpected changes to meeting students' and clients' needs within this new landscape. Consequently, music therapy educators had to pivot from their current teaching and practicum format to comply with university and governmental restrictions.
