Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn bimetallic MOFs for immobilization of fluoride from the aqueous system have been fabricated. Batch defluoridation studies were performed with varying preparatory adsorbate concentration, pH and contact time. The defluoridation performance remains at a high and stable level within the pH range of 3–7. Based on the competitive adsorption investigation, Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn bimetallic MOFs had high affinity and anti-interference ability, except that the presence of co-existing ion (PO 4 3− ) exerted significant interference. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic researches confirmed that the defluoridation process by Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn bimetallic MOFs can be simulated by Langmuir model ( R 2 > 0.99) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 > 0.999), revealing the chemisorption processes for defluoridation. The maximum fluoride uptakes of Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn bimetallic MOFs derived from Langmuir model were 212.76 and 185.19 mg g −1 at 323 K. The negative Δ G 0 , positive Δ S 0 (100.66 and 102.28 J mol −1 K −1 ), and positive Δ H 0 (19.71 and 20.45 kJ mol −1 ) revealed that the adsorption of F − onto the surface of Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn MOFs was endothermic, spontaneous as well as entropy increase in nature. After three consecutive cycles, both Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn MOFs stayed good fluoride removal property, indicative of good recyclability. In summary, Ce-MOFs and Ce/Mn MOFs display potential for fluoridation elimination owing to their satisfactory fluoride capture capacities and rapid adsorption speed among lots of adsorbents.

Abstract:We present the synthesis and characterisation of three Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) using fumaric acid (Fu), terephthalic acid (BDC), and trimesic acid (H3BTC) as linkers. The use of different linkers influenced the size of the MOF particles, surface area, crystallinity, and microporous structure. The successful implementation of Ce-Fu, Ce-BDC, and Ce-H3BTC MOFs for fluoride ion removal from wastewater was carried out, in which Ce-Fu MOFs exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity (AC) of 64.2 mg g-1. The study also reveals that the use of ultrasound as a mediator for adsorption study over conventional method gives rapid adsorption rate, in which 85% of the fluoride uptake took place just in 10 min and achieved maximum AC in 30 min. The kinetics data were most accurately explained by the pseudo-second-order model (PSO). The existence of co-ions such as NO3-, Cl-, HCO3-, SO42-, Br-, CO32-, and PO43- has a substantial effect on fluoride removal. The mechanism between the fluoride ions and the MOF surface took place via the electrostatic force and the ion exchange process, confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and delsa nano. The material is sustained its relatively higher F- ions removal efficiency up to the five cycles. This research might help in the development of novel microporous Ce-based MOFs since it possesses a highly stable crystalline structure in water, suggesting a promising role in aqueous applications.
Structure-performance correlation guided cerium-based metal-organic frameworks: Superior adsorbents for fluoride removal in water

Abstract:Fluoride in the hydrosphere exceeds the standard, which could be critically hazardous to human health and the natural environment. The adsorption method is a mature and effective way to remove pollutants in water, including fluoride. In this study, we synthesized three kinds of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) with different structures and properties by modulating the organic ligands (i.e., trimesic acid (BTC), 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA), and terephthalic acid (BDC)) via the solvothermal method. The adsorption kinetics of Ce-MOFs on fluoride well fit the pseudo second order model, and their adsorption isotherms also conform to Langmuir isothermal model. The thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The maximum saturated adsorption capacities of Ce-BTC, Ce-PMA, and Ce-BDC are 70.7, 159.6, and 139.5 mg g-1, respectively. Ce-MOFs have stable and excellent adsorption capacity at pH = 3-9. Coexisting anions (Cl-, SO42-, and NO3-) do not affect the performance of Ce-MOFs for fluoride removal. Moreover, Ce-MOFs also show their broad prospect as superior fluoride adsorbents because of their excellent performance and reusability in real water samples. Organic ligands have a remarkable influence on the defluoridation performance of Ce-MOFs. This work will provide a feasible idea for designing MOFs as superiors adsorbents for defluoridation.

Abstract:The adsorption capacity (AC) of the material can be significantly enhanced by the composite synergy between various metals, which in turn modifies the morphology, structure, and functional groups of the material. In this view, the nanoporous bimetal metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) using metals (Ce, Fe, Al, and La), namely, Ce@Fe1:1, Ce@Al1:1, and Ce@La1:1, were synthesized via a one-pot method. The nanoporous bimetal MOFs applied to remove F– ions from drinking water followed the order of Ce@Fe1:1 > Ce@Al1:1 > Ce@La1:1. Based on the above findings, Ce@Fe1:1 was further synthesized using cerium and iron at different molar ratios to optimize the best possible compositions, namely, Ce-Fu, Ce@Fe2:1, Ce@Fe1:1, Ce@Fe1:2, and Fe-Fu. These nanoporous bimetal MOF composites were applied to remediate the F– ion from wastewater and Ce@Fe1:1 exhibited the maximum AC of 84.4 mg g–1 at 288 K. It is worth mentioning that the utilization of ultrasonication as a mediator for the adsorption study over the conventional method gives excellent relaxation in time as it enhances the reaction kinetics. As a result, the study demonstrated rapid adsorption kinetics, which follows the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. Moreover, coexisting ions such as NO3 –, Cl–, HCO3 –, and SO4 2– had less effect on the adsorption of fluoride. The adsorption mechanism of Ce@Fe1:1 bimetal MOFs supports the electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange processes, which were confirmed using characterization instruments, such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta potential.

Abstract:Herein, we present a defluoridation approach based on ultrathin two-dimensional metal organic framework (MOF, viz., Ce-DCPBA) nanosheets. The nanosized layers and ultimately exposed metal defects of Ce-DCPBA enable the high-capacity adsorption of fluoride in a wide pH window. Attributed to tailored ligand exchange at metal defects and boron-fluoride complexation, Ce-DCPBA exhibits exceptional selectivity for fluoride with a partition coefficient up to 18.805 L g−1, even in the matrixes with ultrahigh salinity (8 mol/L of nitrate). Negligible interference from other anions, superior adsorption ability and favorable reusability promotes the practical application of Ce-DCPBA for the selective and efficient removal of fluoride from complex environmental samples. These findings furnish a promising strategy for the anesis of fluoride contamination, and illuminate the application potentials and superiorities of ultrathin MOFs-based nanostructures for environmental remediation.

Abstract:The contamination of water with fluoride (F−) is a source of mounting concern for global public health, and the removal of fluoride is quite important and challenging. In this study, two new lanthanide-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Ce(L1)0.5(NO3)(H2O)2]·2DMF} (1) and [Eu3(L2)2(OH)(DMF)0.22(H2O)5.78]·guest (2) (H4L1 = 2,5-di(3′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzene and H4L2 = 3,5-bis(isophthalic acid)-1H-1,2,4-triazole) are designed, synthesized and characterized. Both MOFs are tested for their adsorption capacity for fluoride ions and different uptake times from contaminated water. The investigation indicates that 1 displays a much higher adsorption capacity (103.95 mg g−1) and faster uptake rates (1.79 g mg−1 min−1) for fluoride ion than that of 2. The presented investigation is the first report in which lanthanide-based MOFs are used for the removal of fluoride ions from water.

Abstract:The performance of a Ce(III)-4,4′,4′′-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) tris (azanediyl)) tribenzoic acid–organic framework (Ce-H3TATAB-MOFs) for capturing excess fluoride in aqueous solutions and its subsequent defluoridation was investigated in depth. The optimal sorption capacity was obtained with a metal/organic ligand molar ratio of 1:1. The morphological characteristics, crystalline shape, functional groups, and pore structure of the material were analyzed via SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and N2 adsorption–desorption experiments, and the thermodynamics, kinetics, and adsorption mechanism were elucidated. The influence of pH and co-existing ions for defluoridation performance were also sought. The results show that Ce-H3TATAB-MOFs is a mesoporous material with good crystallinity, and that quasi-second kinetic and Langmuir models can describe the sorption kinetics and thermodynamics well, demonstrating that the entire sorption process is a monolayer-governed chemisorption. The Langmuir maximum sorption capacity was 129.7 mg g−1 at 318 K (pH = 4). The adsorption mechanism involves ligand exchange, electrostatic interaction, and surface complexation. The best removal effect was reached at pH 4, and a removal effectiveness of 76.57% was obtained under strongly alkaline conditions (pH 10), indicating that the adsorbent has a wide range of applications. Ionic interference experiments showed that the presence of PO43− and H2PO4− in water have an inhibitory effect on defluoridation, whereas SO42−, Cl−, CO32−, and NO3− are conducive to the adsorption of fluoride due to the ionic effect.

Abstract:A novel Mn-Ce oxide adsorbent with high sorption capacity for fluoride was prepared via co-precipitation method in this study, and the granular adsorbent was successfully prepared by calcining the mixture of the Mn-Ce powder and pseudo-boehmite. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image showed that the Mn-Ce adsorbent consisted of about 4.5 nm crystals, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the formation of solid solution by Mn species entering CeO(2) lattices. The surface hydroxyl group density on the Mn-Ce adsorbent was determined to be as high as 15.3 mmol g(-1), mainly responsible for its high sorption capacity for fluoride. Sorption isotherms showed that the sorption capacities of fluoride on the powdered and granular adsorbent were 79.5 and 45.5 mg g(-1) respectively at the equilibrium fluoride concentration of 1 mg L(-1), much higher than all reported adsorbents. Additionally, the adsorption was fast within the initial 1 h. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the hydroxyl groups on the adsorbent surface were involved in the sorption of fluoride. Both anion exchange and electrostatic interaction were involved in the sorption of fluoride on the Mn-Ce oxide adsorbent.

Novel MOF(Zr)-on-MOF(Ce) adsorbent for elimination of excess fluoride from aqueous solution

Abstract:Herein, we used a one-pot method to fabricate a novel MOF-on-MOF adsorbent, namely MOF(Zr)-on-MOF(Ce). The adsorbent demonstrated a high maximum fluoride-ions capture capacity of 164.47 mg g-1. The morphology, elemental distribution, pore size distribution, and thermal stability were studied using SEM-EDS, XRD, BET, and TGA. The influence of the temperature, solution pH, fluoride concentration, and coexisting ions was explored using intermittent experiments. The results suggested that MOF(Zr)-on-MOF(Ce) had a fast capture rate for fluoride. MOF(Zr)-on-MOF(Ce) maintained an excellent fluoride removal performance over a wide pH range with an initial fluoride concentration of 20 mg L-1. The optimal effect was obtained at a pH of 4, but a high removal efficiency of 94% was maintained even at a pH of 9. Interference experiments showed that only the PO43- had an adverse inhibition influence. The field experiments demonstrated that MOF(Zr)-on-MOF(Ce) can keep the safety threshold levels of fluoride in drinking water. The Langmuir and pseudo-second order kinetic models were well fitted for the defluoridation process, demonstrating that the adsorption of fluoride ions on MOF(Zr)-on-MOF(Ce) was dominated by monolayer chemisorption. With the further characterization and kinetic thermodynamic studies indicates that the removal mechanism involves ion exchange, electrostatic interactions and complexation effect.

Abstract:Long-term consumption of drinking water that contains excessive amounts of fluoride can endanger human health; therefore, the preparation and application of a high-efficiency defluorination adsorbent for advanced purification of drinking water are of significant interest. This study presents a metal-organic framework adsorbent (MIL-96(Al)) with the granular structure of rice, which was generated by hydrothermal reaction. The specific surface area of MIL-96(Al) was ~220 m 2 g -1 , and it showed a good thermal stability. Several experiments were conducted wherein conditions, including adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, pH, and coexisting anions, were varied to understand the defluorination performance of the material. Results showed that pH (6–9) and coexisting anions had little effect on the removal efficiency of fluoride. The adsorption isotherm can be described by the Langmuir model, and the theoretical fluoride adsorption capacity of MIL-96(Al) was up to 42.19 mg Fg -1 at 298 K, which is much higher than that of the commonly used activated alumina. The adsorption process of fluoride is endothermic and follows pseudo second-order kinetics. In addition, MIL-96(Al) was shown to still achieve ~61.8% of the adsorption capacity after seven regenerations. This study shows that MIL-96(Al) is a good application prospect and could be widely used to remove fluoride from water.

Abstract:Ce-MOF was synthesized by a solvothermal synthesis method and was used to simultaneously remove phosphate, fluoride and arsenic (V) from water by adsorption. Ce-MOF was characterized by a nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The effects of initial concentration, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, pH value and adsorbent on the adsorption properties were investigated. A Langmuir isotherm model was used to fit the adsorption data, and the adsorption capacity of phosphate, fluoride, and arsenic (V) was calculated to be 41.2 mg·g−1, 101.8 mg·g−1 and 33.3 mg·g−1, respectively. Compared with the existing commercially available CeO2 and other MOFs, Ce-MOF has a much higher adsorption capacity. Furthermore, after two reuses, the performance of the adsorbent was almost unchanged, indicating it is a stable adsorbent and has good application potential in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, three types of adsorbents metal-organic frameworks were used to remove fluoride from wastewater. The influences of various parameters, such as initial fluoride concentration, pH, adsorption time, co-existing anions, and humic acid were also evaluated. The central composite design was used to optimize fluoride adsorption. Aluminum metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101(Al)), Ce(1,3,5-BTC)(H2O)6 metal-organic frameworks(Ce-BTC) and La(1,3,5-BTC)(H2O)6 metal-organic frameworks(La-BTC) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) for surface area and total pore volume. The adsorption performance of MIL-101 (Al) was the best, Ce-BTC was the second, and La-BTC was the worst. The adsorption kinetic and isotherms models were studied. The results of the response surface methodology revealed that pH was the largest influencing factor in the removal of fluoride by Ce-BTC. When the initial solution pH is 3, the adsorbent dosage is 0.8 g/L, and the initial fluorine concentration is 40 mg/L, the fluorine removal efficiency is 96.8%, which was the local maximum. The adsorption data of MIL-101(Al), Ce-BTC and La-BTC were in keeping with Langmuir isotherm models and pseudo-second-order. Thermodynamic data showed that the adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous, and the entropy increases during the adsorption of F− on MOFs.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate the use of cerium (Ce)-UiO-66 metal organic framework (MOF) for the removal of a variety of potentially toxic pollutants. The Ce-UiO-66 MOF, with similar framework topologies to Zr-UiO-66, has not been explored for its adsorptive properties in water remediation. The replacement of Zr metal center with Ce yields a MOF that can be synthesized in shorter durations with lesser energy consumptions and with excellent multipollutant adsorption properties. Further, the Ce-UiO-66 MOF was also studied for its adsorption abilities in the binary component system. Interestingly, the adsorbent showed higher adsorption capacities in the presence of other pollutants. Removal studies for other potentially toxic anionic and cationic dyes showed that the Ce-UiO-66 MOF has a wide range of contaminant removal abilities. Investigations of individual adsorption capacities revealed that the Ce-UiO-66 MOF has a maximum adsorption capacity of 793.7 mg/g for congo red (CR), 110 mg/g for methylene blue (MB), 66.1 mg/g for fluoride (F-), 30 mg/g for Cr6+ and 485.4 mg/g for the pharmaceutical waste diclofenac sodium (DCF). To imply the practical applications of the Ce-UiO-66 MOF we have also demonstrated an adaptable filter that could separate all the potentially toxic pollutants.

Abstract:In this present study, a bio-adsorbent based on cerium immobilized cross-linked chitosan (CTS-Ce) composite was prepared and employed for the removal of fluoride from water. This bio-absorbent was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental mapping images (EMI) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Adsorption properties for fluoride removal were systematically investigated, including pH (2–11), initial fluoride concentrations (5.0–100mg/L), contact time, temperature (10–40°C) and co-existing ions. Besides, kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and regeneration were also studied to evaluate the fluoride adsorption performance on this adsorbent. Results showed the experimental data followed Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption process was controlled by intra-particle diffusion and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir isotherm was 153mg/g at 20°C (close to experimental qe value 149mg/g), which was higher than the raw chitosan (13.2mg/g) and most of the reported adsorbents. The adsorption mechanisms for fluoride removal were (i) the electrostatic attraction among −NH3+ and Ce3+/4+ with F− ions, (ii) the ligand exchange between NO3− and F− and (iii) the formation of CTS-Ce-F complexation. This novel composite can be easily regenerated with NaOH solution while maintaining 78% removal efficiency after 3 cycles. It was believed that this composite had great potential to remove fluoride from contaminated water.

Abstract:A series of novel cerium-doped MIL-101-NH2 materials were synthesized using the solvothermal method for the simultaneous efficient removal of phosphate and As(V). According to the characterization results, cerium was successfully loaded onto MIL-101-NH2 and that Ce-MOFs might be generated during the loading process, which modified the crystal structure of MIL-101-NH2 and resulted in MOFs with different microstructures. In single-uptake systems containing only phosphate or As(V), isothermal adsorption experiments showed that 1Ce-MIL-101-NH2 exhibited better adsorption properties of phosphate and As(V) than MIL-101-NH2. Furthermore, the uptake amounts of phosphate and As(V) reached 341.5 mg/g and 249 mg/g, respectively. Superior uptake amounts for binary phosphate (167.36 mg/g) and As(V) (87.55 mg/g) were achieved with 1Ce-MIL-101-NH2. Kinetic experiments revealed a higher uptake rate of phosphate than of As(V). FT-IR and XPS analyses showed that the main mechanism for the removal of phosphate and As(V) from water by 1Ce-MIL-101-NH2 was the formation of an Fe/CeOP inner complex through ligand complexation and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, 1Ce-MIL-101-NH2 exhibited high selectivity and excellent efficiency in removing phosphate and As(V) in contaminated spring water in the presence of competing anions; this further confirms the application potential of the novel adsorbent.

Abstract:The discharge of inorganic pollutants like phosphate and fluoride is a cause of mounting concern to the world due to the substantial environmental and human health risk. Adsorption is one of the most common and affordable technologies widely utilized for removing inorganic pollutants such as phosphate and fluoride anions. Investigating efficient sorbents for the adsorption of these pollutants is extremely important and challenging. This work aimed at studying the adsorption efficiency of the Ce(III)-BDC metal-organic framework (MOF) for the removal of these anions from an aqueous solution using a batch mode. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) techniques evidenced the successful synthesis of Ce(III)-BDC MOF in water as a solvent without any energy input within a short reaction time. The outstanding removal efficiency of phosphate and fluoride was exhibited at an optimized pH (3, 4), adsorbent dose (0.20, 0.35 g), contact time (3, 6 h), agitation speed (120, 100 rpm), and concentration (10, 15 ppm) for each ion, respectively. The experiment on the effect of coexisting ions demonstrated that SO42- and PO43- ions are the primary interfering ions in phosphate and fluoride adsorption, respectively, while the HCO3- and Cl- ions were found to have interfered less. Furthermore, the isotherm experiment showed that the equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model and the kinetic data correlated well with the pseudo-second-order model for both ions. The results of thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH°, ΔG°, and ΔS° evidenced an endothermic and spontaneous process. The regeneration of the adsorbent made using water and NaOH solution showed the easy regeneration of the sorbent Ce(III)-BDC MOF, which can be reused four times, revealing its potential application for the removal of these anions from aqueous environment.

Abstract:In this study, adsorption potential of a typical aluminum-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), Al12O(OH)18(H2O)3(Al2(OH)4)(BTC)6·24H2O (referred as MIL-96), was investigated for defluoridation of drinking water using batch experiment. The effects of different parameters such as pH, contact time, initial fluoride concentration, and competing anions were studied to understand the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent under various conditions. Optimum removal of fluoride ions occurred in a pH range of 3–10. The results indicated that the defluoridation efficiency and aluminum residual of MIL-96 were far superior to that of activated alumina (AA) or nano-alumina (NA). The Langmuir equilibrium model was found to be suitable for describing the fluoride sorption on MIL-96. The maximum fluoride uptake capacity for MIL-96 was calculated to be 31.69mgg−1 at the temperature of 298K. Moreover, there were no significant influence on fluoride removal by MIL-96 in the presence of chloride, nitrate, sulfate, bicarbonate and phosphate. Temperature study was carried out at 298K, 308K and 318K revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic reactions. In column tests using real groundwater as influent, about 140 bed volumes (BVs) of groundwater were treated before breakthrough was reached under space velocities (SVs) of 4h−1. Results from this study demonstrated the MIL-96 is a promising adsorbent that can be potentially used into drinking water processes.

Abstract:Excess fluoride in water can result in serious health problems. For this reason, we have developed a novel Ce–Zn binary metal oxide (Ce–Zn BMO) adsorbent for high-performance fluoride adsorption from drinking water. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrated both electrostatic interactions and ion exchange of surface hydroxyl groups of Ce–Zn BMO with fluoride ions. The Ce–Zn BMO adsorbent exhibited a good Langmuir adsorption capacity of 194mg/g at pH 7.0. The adsorbent has a wide pH range (3–7) applicability and negligible coexisting ion effect that makes it an attractive sustainable material for field applications. Column adsorption studies indicated the efficient treatable volume as ∼94-bed volume (BV) using natural water when the breakthrough point in the column was 1.5mg/L. Furthermore, six cycles reusability without much loss of adsorption capacity and effective column treatment of fluoride contaminated water indicated that Ce–Zn BMO could be developed into an efficient technology for high performance elevated fluoride water treatment.

Abstract:Fluoride contamination is a serious problem of global concern, and water decontamination from fluoride remains an imperative but also a challenging task. Recently, Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides (CFBOs) nanoparticles of sufficient hydroxyl group and high reactivity have exhibited unique advantages for specific fluoride elimination. Unfortunately, they are difficult to apply directly in scale-up water treatment due to their ultrafine nature. Herein, we fabricated a novel polymer-based Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides nanocomposite, i.e., , by co-precipitation of Ce/Fe oxides nanoparticles inside a porous polystyrene anion exchanger D201. The material characterization results confirmed that CFBOs were successfully immobilized inside the pores of D201 with nanoscale and micro crystalline nature, and the shielding effect of the host D201 significantly improved the chemical stability of CFBOs against pH variation (3–12). As compared with cerium and ferric (hydr)oxides nanocomposites ( and ) and its host D201, exhibited superior capacity and better selectivity for fluoride adsorption. Thanks to the inner-sphere complexation between immobilized CFBOs and fluoride, the concomitant competing anions exerted negligible effect on the defluoridation efficiency of Fluoride uptake onto agreed well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 65.99 mg/g. The exhausted could be efficiently regenerated by a simple alkaline treatment for cyclic utilization with constant defluorination performance. Fixed-bed assays demonstrated that the encapsulating of CFBOs nanoparticles enhanced the effective treatment capacity of by 10–12 times over the host D201 irrespective of whether synthetic wastewater or mine drainage was the feeding solution. The above results verified that is a new kind of efficient defluoridation adsorbent with practical application prospect.

Abstract:The excess fluoride in drinking water is serious risk which leads to fluorosis. The adsorption method is facile route for defluoridation studies. Hybrid adsorbent possesses unique advantages like high surface area and high stability has been employed for water treatment. In the present work, hydrotalcite (HT) fabricated Ce-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) bridged with biopolymers (alginate and chitosan) namely HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads was developed and employed towards fluoride removal in batch mode. The fabricated HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS beads were analyzed by DTA, FTIR, SEM, EDAX, TGA and XRD studies. Besides, FTIR and EDAX proved the affinity of HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads on fluoride was majorly attributed by electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange and complexation mechanism. To include detail insight into adsorption route; the kinetics, thermodynamic and isotherm studies were investigated for fluoride adsorption. The equilibrium data of HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads for fluoride adsorption was fitted with Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic investigation results demonstrated that the fluoride adsorption was spontaneous with endothermic nature. The regeneration and field investigation results revealed that the developed HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads are reusable and more apt at field environment.
