Abstract:This paper discusses the interrelationship between e-Science and CSCW in terms of key substantive, methodological and conceptual innovations made in both fields. In so doing, we hope to draw out the existing relationship between CSCW and e-Science research, and to map out some key future challenges where the two areas of research may become more closely aligned. In considering what may be required to draw the two more closely together, the paper focuses primarily on investigations that have been undertaken in two dedicated initiatives into e-Science, along with the key issues emerging from these studies.

Abstract:CSCW is in an advanced state of fragmentation. The acronym now, by and large, denotes widely diverging research programs that, apart from a shared name, have little or nothing in common. This situation obviously calls for clarification. Recounting the prehistory and formation of CSCW, the paper shows that CSCW, as a distinct research program devoted to the development of new technologies on the basis of understanding actual cooperative work practices, arose in response to the crises in which ‘Computer Mediated Communication’ (CMC) and Office Automation' (OA) had landed by the late 1980s. The paper finally discusses the reasons why CMC, although superseded as a research paradigm by the practice-oriented program of CSCW, has gained a new lease on life in CSCW and thus why CSCW has become fragmented.

Abstract:Citizen science changes the way scientific research is pursued. It opens up data collection and analysis to the general public, to the wisdom of crowds. In this emerging area, there is much research to be done to better understand how we can develop citizen science infrastructure and continue the democratization of science. In creating such systems, there is much we can learn from principles that have emerged out of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) research. In this paper, I use a nine-step framework to highlight where CSCW knowledge can contribute.

Abstract:Abstract Research on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has traditionally investigated how student-, group-, task-, and technological characteristics affect the processes and outcomes of collaboration. On the other hand, cognitive load theory has traditionally been used to study individual learning processes and to investigate instructional effects that are present during individual learning (e.g., expertise reversal effect). In this contribution we will argue that cognitive load theory can be applied to CSCL. By incorporating concepts such as collective working memory (i.e., individuals share the burden of information processing), mutual cognitive interdependence (i.e., individuals learn about each other’s expertise and become dependent on their partners’ expertise), and transaction costs (i.e., the burden placed on individuals working memory capacity when communicating and coordinating collaborative activities), collaborative cognitive load theory (CCLT) can be used to formulate testable hypotheses for pressing issues in CSCL research. The aim of this paper is to develop a research agenda to guide future CSCL research from a CCLT perspective. We highlight how variables associated with student-, group-, task-, and technological characteristics may be investigated using CCLT. We also address important steps CSCL research needs to make with respect to the measurement of variables and the methodologies used to analyze data.

Abstract:Modern societies have undergone major changes during the last decade. Especially information and communication technologies have increasingly shaped many facets of the daily lives of many human beings as well as of, for example, industrial production, medicine technology, logistics, traffic management, environmental technology, and agriculture. Cyber-physical systems play a major role in this development. In many cases, they are equipped with large amounts of software and pose radically new challenges to developers and also users of these systems. This journal takes these developments into account and, hence, puts a special focus on software-intensive cyber-physical systems.
Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning in Software Engineering Education: A Systematic Mapping Study

Abstract:Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has been a steady topic of research since the early 1990s, and the trend has continued to this date. The basic benefits of CSCL in the classroom have been established in many fields of education to improve especially student motivation and critical thinking. In this paper we present a systematic mapping study about the state of research of computer-supported collaborative learning in software engineering education. The mapping study examines published articles from 2003 to 2013 to find out how this field of science has progressed. Ongoing research topics in CSCL in software engineering education concern wider learning communities and the effectiveness of different collaborative approaches. We found that while the research establishes the benefits of CSCL in several different environments from local to global ones, these approaches are not always detailed and comparative enough to pinpoint which factors have enabled their success.

Abstract:Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has evolved rapidly in the last three decades, and teacher interventions have regained attention. Based on 106 articles in The International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning , the study focuses on teacher intervention in CSCL, summarizing three significant issues regarding their definition, mechanism, and theoretical foundation. The definition includes the definition of teacher and intervention in CSCL. The mechanism of teacher intervention consists of six aspects of intervention content, intervention level, intervention timing, intervention method, technical tools of intervention, and influencing factors. The theoretical foundation includes Knowledge Building Theory, Script Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Instrumental Genesis Theory. Finally, this paper proposes a framework for teacher intervention in CSCL, aiming to provide theoretical and practical references for CSCL-related teachers and researchers, enhancing teachers’ literacy of learning sciences.

Abstract:The main issue in designing the structure for CSCW systems is to provide efficient collaboration mechanisms. A hierarchical collaboration mechanism scheme was proposed which consists of three levels: system-oriented, application-oriented and operation object-oriented collaboration support. In accordance to this hierarchical collaboration mechanism, a platform-based architecture of CSCW systems was explored that can accommodate multiple cooperative applications. With providing all of the three-layer cooperation mechanisms, multimedia desktop conference system TH-MDCS can support geographically separative group members which are of different fields, seated at their desks, cooperating at the same time or at different time by means of sharing information in such multimedia forms as video, audio, image, graphics and text to carry out various tasks together.

Abstract:It is natural for humans to collaborate while dealing with complex problems. In this article I consider this process of collaboration in the context of information seeking. The study and discussion presented here are driven by two dissatisfactions: (1) the majority of IR systems today do not facilitate collaboration directly, and (2) the concept of collaboration itself is not well-understood. I begin by probing the notion of collaboration and propose a model that helps us understand the requirements for a successful collaboration. A model of a Collaborative Information Seeking (CIS) environment is then rendered based on an extended model of information seeking.

Abstract:Major projects to support citizens in healthcare, government, energy-savings, disability, and the like are in the research phases or are underway, often on a large-scale. These efforts - in China, the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere aim to affect societal changes through technical means. Yet, these projects are seldom only computational, but often a combination of technical and social, interwoven to provide a suitable infrastructure for these efforts to change society. These projects are seldom only collaborative either, but collaboration and coordination play central roles in many of these efforts. CSCW cannot only learn from these efforts in the field but CSCW's research interests and findings can also help in return. This workshop aims to bring together people from numerous countries and societies who are carrying out these projects or are interested in these efforts to share architectures, designs, findings, and theories so as to promote these projects.

Abstract:It has now been, widely recognized that a CSCW platform will be critical to the success of CSCW research, development and application. A CSCW platform tries to ease developer work in developing a cooperative application by providing some types of general-purpose cooperation support services. However current CSCW platforms lack the power to support uniformly the development of a full spectrum of cooperative applications. This paper summarizes some experiences and considerations in the design and implementation of a general-purpose CSCW platform named Dicse. The basic idea is to provide developers with the Cova model, with which the static and dynamic properties of data objects and the cooperation control policies can be described, and a interpreting system, which interprets the description and conducts the required cooperative control. In this way, cooperative services can be provided, while the implementation details are completely hidden from developers. We will discuss the Cova model, the services provided how they are implemented, and how they can be used by developers.

Abstract:Statistics and data science are especially collaborative disciplines that typically require practitioners to interact with many different people or groups. Consequently, interdisciplinary collaboration skills are part of the personal and professional skills essential for success as an applied statistician or data scientist. These skills are learnable and teachable, and learning and improving collaboration skills provides a way to enhance one's practice of statistics and data science. To help individuals learn these skills and organizations to teach them, we have developed a framework covering five essential components of statistical collaboration: Attitude, Structure, Content, Communication, and Relationship. We call this the ASCCR Frame. This framework can be incorporated into formal training programs in the classroom or on the job and can also be used by individuals through self-study. We show how this framework can be applied specifically to statisticians and data scientists to improve their collaboration skills and their interdisciplinary impact. We believe that the ASCCR Frame can help organize and stimulate research and teaching in interdisciplinary collaboration and call on individuals and organizations to begin generating evidence regarding its effectiveness.

Abstract:A new computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) prototype system is developed to meet the needs of color CRT CAD/CAM. This paper discusses the characteristics and defines the key elements of the CSCW prototype system. The cooperation relation and cooperation work flow of color CRT CAD/CAM are provided. Compared with the traditional color CRT CAD/CAM system, the new CSCW prototype system is more suitable for the rapid design of color CRT. The efficiency of the new CSCW prototype is validated. A general CSCW architecture to support integrated product/process design and development is presented. A case study and evaluation of the architecture is also discussed. The integrated architecture will facilitate information access, sharing, and analysis among design team members using the open World Wide Web platforms and resources to design CRT products
Critical-Reflective Human-AI Collaboration: Exploring Computational Tools for Art Historical Image Retrieval

Abstract:Just as other disciplines, the humanities explore how computational research approaches and tools can meaningfully contribute to scholarly knowledge production. We approach the design of computational tools through the analytical lens of 'human-AI collaboration.' However, there is no generalizable concept of what constitutes 'meaningful' human-AI collaboration. In terms of genuinely human competencies, we consider criticality and reflection as guiding principles of scholarly knowledge production. Although (designing for) reflection is a recurring topic in CSCW and HCI discourses, it has not been centered in work on human-AI collaboration. We posit that integrating both concepts is a viable approach to supporting 'meaningful' human-AI collaboration in the humanities. Our research, thus, is guided by the question of how critical reflection can be enabled in human-AI collaboration. We address this question with a use case that centers on computer vision (CV) tools for art historical image retrieval. Specifically, we conducted a qualitative interview study with art historians and extended the interviews with a think-aloud software exploration. We observed and recorded our participants' interaction with a ready-to-use CV tool in a possible research scenario. We found that critical reflection, indeed, constitutes a core prerequisite for 'meaningful' human-AI collaboration in humanities research contexts. However, we observed that critical reflection was not fully realized during interaction with the CV tool. We interpret this divergence as supporting our hypothesis that computational tools need to be intentionally designed in such a way that they actively scaffold and support critical reflection during interaction. Based on our findings, we suggest four empirically grounded design implications for 'critical-reflective human-AI collaboration'.

Abstract:Cyberspace surveying and mapping (CSM) is to measure, analyze, discover and visualize the cyberspace resources and their relationships. It is an efficient methodology to understand the status of the cyberspace. In this paper, we discuss the concept of CSM and cyberspace resources, and propose a hierarchical model for CSM from the point of view of its application. Then, we propose a formalized representation framework of cyberspace resources based on knowledge graph. Finally, we design the application scenarios for CSM in terms of data sharing, intelligent assets indexing and identification. This paper aims to motivate the researches on CSM in theory and applications.

Abstract:Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) is becoming a hot research area in E-learning, and the function of CS in CSCL is implemented with groupware which inherits fruits from Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). But existing groupware are isolated each other, and heterogeneous coordinate mechanisms can't be meshed together, also these systems usually do not support cooperation within large-scale group. To solve these problems, the paper proposes a brand-new Open Cooperative Environment (OCE) and builds up a framework according to the requirements for the new OCE, which adopts Grid technologies. The OCE can be used in the E-learning platform of the China Central Radio & TV University (CCRTVU).
