Abstract:Aims To explore the mediating roles of family resources (at the individual [parental self‐efficacy], family [family resilience] and social level [social support]) and parental problem‐solving skills in the association between family functioning and family adaptation in families of children with cancer. Design A cross‐sectional study. Methods This study recruited 318 parents of children with cancer from three tertiary hospitals in mainland China. Self‐report questionnaires were used to collect data on key variables, including family functioning, parental self‐efficacy, family resilience, social support, parental problem‐solving skills and family adaptation. Data analyses were carried out using descriptive analysis, univariate analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, hierarchical linear regression and bootstrapping. Results Family functioning was significantly and positively correlated with family adaptation. Family resources (parental self‐efficacy at the individual level, family resilience at the family level or social support at the social level) and parental problem‐solving skills both independently mediated the relationship between family functioning and family adaptation. Additionally, family resources at all three levels mediated the relationship through their effects on cumulatively parental problem‐solving skills, constructing a chain mediating model. Conclusions The study underscores the significance of family functioning, family resources at the individual, family and social levels and parental problem‐solving skills in promoting adaptation in families of children with cancer. It highlights the need for family‐centred interventions targeted at these factors to improve family adaptation. Impact This study extended related theories and previous studies to confirm the mediating role of family resources and parental problem‐solving skills, both independently and sequentially. Moreover, parental problem‐solving skills were confirmed as key elements that can be incorporated into future interventions, suggesting that problem‐solving skills training may serve as a highly promising program for families of children with cancer. Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the level of parent-reported family resilience, parenting styles and psychosocial adjustment of children with chronic illness and to identify the relationships between family resilience, parenting styles and psychosocial adjustment in families with children with chronic illness. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2019 and August 2019. A total of 236 parents of children with chronic illness and 98 parents with healthy children were recruited from general hospitals by convenience sampling. A parent completed the Chinese Family Resilience Assessment Scale, the Parenting Rearing Patterns Questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Family resilience, parenting styles, and psychosocial adjustment of children with chronic illness were compared with those of healthy children. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was performed to explore the mediation effect of parenting styles between family resilience and psychosocial adjustment among children with chronic illness. Results: Parents of children with chronic illness reported lower level of family resilience and authoritative parenting, but more peer relationship problems compared to parents of healthy children. SEM showed that authoritative parenting fully mediated the relationship between family resilience and psychosocial adjustment of children with chronic illness. Conclusion: Childhood chronic illness reduces family resilience, authoritative parenting and children's psychosocial adjustment, but authoritative parenting mediated these effects, so authoritative parenting may be important for family resilience in families of children with chronic illness. Pediatric clinicians and nurses should provide family-centered interventions, as well as parenting training, to improve children's psychosocial outcomes.

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of problem‐solving training on the interpersonal problem‐solving skills of mothers of children with special needs. The parallel randomised controlled trial was conducted between August 2021 and March 2022. A priori power analysis was conducted, and 98 mothers who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The analysis indicated that a sample size of 39 participants per group was required. Data were collected using a personal information form and the Interpersonal Problem Solving Inventory. The mothers were divided into control and experimental groups. The participants in the experimental group were given a problem‐solving training program, while the control group was not exposed to any intervention. There was no significant difference in the pre‐training test scores for any of the dimensions (p > 0.05). Abstract:Background Caregivers of children with chronic diseases suffer from great parenting pressure, which directly affects the treatment and rehabilitation of children, reduces the quality of life of caregivers and damages family functioning. Existing reviews have not systematically summarized and evaluated interventions for parenting stress in caregivers of children with chronic diseases. Data Sources Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, OVID, CNKI, CBM, Wan Fang and Cochrane Library were searched for eligible reviews in November 2021 and October 2022. Methods Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, reviewed full texts of articles for eligibility, and appraised the quality of reviews using JBI. The quality of the evidence was assessed using GRADE. Findings are reported in accordance with PRISMA checklist. Narrative summaries grouped findings by intervention types. Results Out of 2632 records, we included 21 systematic reviews for a synthesis. Interventions for parenting stress in children with chronic diseases were divided into seven categories. Cognitive behavioural interventions, psychosocial interventions, child behavioural and/or developmental parent interventions and synthesized interventions have shown high‐level evidence in reducing parenting stress for caregivers of children with chronic diseases. Furthermore, outcome measures and intervention protocols were highly heterogeneous across interventions. Conclusions This umbrella review suggest that reducing the parenting stress of caregivers of children with chronic diseases can directly target caregivers' parenting stress through cognitive behavioural interventions/psychosocial interventions and/or provide guidance to parents on the behavioural and developmental problems of children with chronic diseases. A more standardized approach to outcome measures is essential to assess efficacy and compare interventions across studies. Relevance to Clinical Practice The findings provide information and evidence for reducing parenting stress among caregivers of children with chronic diseases to guide the development of comprehensive intervention strategies. Abstract:PurposeCaring for children with cancer is considerably stressful for parents and may negatively affect their physical and psychological well-being. Resilience plays a pivotal role in maintaining psychological well-being in the face of stress and adversity. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological interventions in promoting resilience among parents of children with cancer.MethodsFive English databases and two Chinese databases were subjected to a systematic search from inception to March 2020. The methodological quality of the included randomised controlled trials was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool (RoB 2.0). Meta-analyses and descriptive analyses were used. Subgroup analyses of the intervention modes and time since diagnosis were also conducted.ResultsFive studies involving 308 participants were included. The systematic review identified three types of psychological intervention, namely resilience training, self-disclosure and peer support, which had different essential components and characteristics. The meta-analyses of three randomised controlled trials revealed that the psychological interventions enhanced parents' resilience with a large effect size (Hedges' adjusted g 0.92; 95% CI 0.22, 1.62; p = .01).ConclusionEvidence supports the effectiveness of psychological interventions for enhancing resilience in the parents of children with cancer. Healthcare professionals can incorporate evidence-based psychological interventions to enhance resilience to help these parents better navigate adversity, adapt to their children's situations and improve their psychological well-being.

Toxicity of cadmium to six species in two genera of crayfish and the effect of cadmium on molting success

Abstract:Nine acute (96‐h) toxicity tests were conducted on six species of crayfish (Cambaridae). Six tests focused on adults, and three tests examined juveniles. Lethal concentration to 50% of a population (LC50) and lethal concentration to 10% of a population (LC10) values, respectively, for the adults of individual test species were as follows: Orconectes juvenilis, 2.44 and 0.623 mg Cd/L; Orconectes placidus, 0.487 and 0.092 mg Cd/L; Orconectes virilis, 3.30 and 0.947 mg Cd/L; Procambarus acutus, 0.368 and 0.048 mg Cd/L; Procambarus alleni, 3.07 and 0.386 mg Cd/L; and Procambarus clarkii, 2.66 and 0.486 mg Cd/L. The Orconectes LC50 genus mean acute value (GMAV) was 1.57 mg Cd/L, whereas the LC50 GMAV for Procambarus was 1.44 mg Cd/L. The LC10 GMAVs were 0.379 and 0.208 mg Cd/L, respectively. Family mean acute values (FMAVs) also were calculated for the Cambaridae using all species data (LC50, 1.51 mg Cd/L; LC10, 0.281 mg Cd/L). For tests with juvenile crayfish, the LC50 and LC10 values, respectively, were as follows: O. juvenilis, 0.060 and 0.014 mg Cd/L; O. placidus, 0.037 and 0.002 mg Cd/L; and P. clarkii, 0.624 and 0.283 mg Cd/L. The GMAVs were calculated for juvenile Orconectes (LC50, 0.047 mg Cd/L; LC10, 0.005 mg Cd/L). Additionally, FMAVs were calculated for juvenile crayfish (LC50, 0.111 mg Cd/L; LC10, 0.020 mg Cd/L). Crayfish sensitivity to Cd varied by a factor of nine among species tested as adults and by a factor of 17 among species tested as juveniles. Molting was a sensitive life stage for crayfish. Most individuals that molted shortly before or during exposure to Cd died, whereas all controls that molted in the adult assays survived. Because molting is a sensitive, recurring life‐cycle event, molting individuals should be included in toxicological analysis despite some contrary recommendations.

Abstract:Objective: The current study aims to examine the effect of cognitive problem-solving skills training on parents' parenting styles and their anger reduction towards their children. Method: The method of this research is quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest single-group design without follow-up. The sample group consisted of 69 mothers of children aged 4 to 7 years, selected through convenience sampling. In these workshops, which were held over 9 two-hour sessions across 9 weeks, parents were made aware of effective and ineffective methods of dealing with children's behaviors, and practiced exercises to improve their response style to challenging behaviors of children. To evaluate the effectiveness of the training program, two questionnaires were used: the Parenting Styles questionnaire (Shokoohi Yekta & Parand, 2007) and the Anger Assessment questionnaire (Shokoohi Yekta & Zamani, 2007). The research data were analyzed with ANOVA and t-test methods using SPSS software. Findings: The results showed that participation in the problem-solving workshop had a positive effect on participants' performance regarding their parenting styles. Such that, this program led to an increase in the problem-solving parenting style and a decrease in parents' use of other ineffective parenting styles such as advising without explanation, and punishment and scolding (P 0.05). Conclusion: Accordingly, it can be inferred that training in problem-solving skills can be used to improve parenting styles and the quality of interpersonal communications within the family.

Improving Child and Parent Mental Health in Primary Care: A Cluster-Randomized Trial of Communication Skills Training

Abstract:OBJECTIVE. We examined child and parent outcomes of training providers to engage families efficiently and to reduce common symptoms of a range of mental health problems and disorders. METHODS. Training involved three 1-hour discussions structured around video examples of family/provider communication skills, each followed by practice with standardized patients and self-evaluation. Skills targeted eliciting parent and child concerns, partnering with families, and increasing expectations that treatment would be helpful. We tested the training with providers at 13 sites in rural New York, urban Maryland, and Washington, DC. Children (5–16 years of age) making routine visits were enrolled if they screened “possible” or “probable” for mental disorders with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire or if their provider said they were likely to have an emotional or behavioral problem. Children and their parents were then monitored for 6 months, to assess changes in parent-rated symptoms and impairment and parent symptoms. RESULTS. Fifty-eight providers (31 trained and 27 control) and 418 children (248 patients of trained providers and 170 patients of control providers) participated. Among the children, 72% were in the possible or probable categories. Approximately one half (54%) were white, 30% black, 12% Latino, and 4% other ethnicities. Eighty-eight percent (367 children) completed follow-up monitoring. At 6 months, minority children cared for by trained providers had greater reduction in impairment (−0.91 points) than did those cared for by control providers but no greater reduction in symptoms. Seeing a trained provider did not have an impact on symptoms or impairment among white children. Parents of children cared for by trained providers experienced greater reduction in symptoms (−1.7 points) than did those cared for by control providers. CONCLUSION. Brief provider communication training had a positive impact on parent mental health symptoms and reduced minority children's impairment across a range of problems.

Abstract:Introduction How parents encourage and engage young children to learn science and solve scientific problems remains an understudied issue. Parenting styles have been widely studied and found to be associated with children’s various developmental outcomes. However, there is a dearth of research linking parenting styles to early science skills which build from both cognitive and social abilities. This cross-sectional study intended to pilot test a mediation model of parental involvement in the relationship between parenting styles and children’s science problem-solving skills. Methods A total of 226 children ( M = 62.10 months, SD = 4.14, 108 girls) and their parents was recruited from five kindergartens in Fuzhou in China by adopting stratified random sampling. All parents completed the Demographics Questionnaire, the Parenting Style and Dimension Questionnaire, and the Chinese Early Parental Involvement Scale. Each child was tested with the Picture Problem Solving Task. Pearson’s correlation analysis and intermediary effect analysis were conducted using IBM SPSS 25 in data analysis. Results and discussion Parental involvement had a significant mediating effect in the bidirectional associations between parenting styles and children’s science problem-solving skills. The findings suggested that children with higher science problem-solving skills were likely to be raised by parents who were employing a flexible (i.e., authoritative) parenting style and had more involvement in children’s formal and informal learning environments, while children’s higher levels of science problem-solving skills predicted a higher level of parental involvement and a more flexible parenting style.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Parental cancer significantly impacts both parents and children, necessitating psychosocial interventions to enhance family well-being. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions targeting parents with cancer on their mental health, quality of life, their children's well-being, and family functioning.METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases for relevant articles published from 2006 to 2023. The methodological aspects of eleven studies from diverse countries were critically evaluated.RESULTS: The review included 496 parents, primarily female breast cancer patients, and their children. Narrative synthesis highlighted interventions that aimed to strengthen parent-child connection (Enhancing Connection (EC)), enhance family communication, improve psychological well-being of parents (Struggle for Life Intervention), and address children's mental health (Wonders and Worries (W&W)). Additionally, interventions like Cancer PEPSONE Program (CPP) aimed to expand social networks and support systems. These interventions demonstrated success in reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms, parenting stress, and mitigating children's externalizing and internalizing problems. However, they were not exempt from methodological limitations such as participant selection bias, lack of blinding, and low follow-up rates.CONCLUSIONS: Based on the review, psychological support for parents with cancer is an emerging field, predominantly explored in Western countries with a significant emphasis on maternal experiences. The early stage of this field and inherent methodological limitations warrant cautious interpretation of these findings and further research for comprehensive understanding and application.

Abstract:Background Social support is an important approach to improve the psychosocial health status and promote positive coping for caregivers of children with chronic diseases. Such an approach can reduce parenting stress, help resolve parenting difficulties through the use of various social support relationships. Methods We performed an umbrella review methodology using the method of examination, analysis and synthesis of systematic reviews. A PRISMA flow diagram was used to show the search process. The Joanna Briggs Institute was used to appraise the quality of papers and a narrative synthesis was undertaken. Relevant English and Chinese systematic reviews were searched in Embase, PubMed, Web of science, OVID, CNKI, CBM, Wan Fang and Cochrane Library databases, until November 2021, June 2022. Results Out of 1,905 records, we included fourteen systematic reviews for a synthesis. Evidence to promote social support for caregivers of children with chronic diseases was identified from four key aspects: (i) Intervention content; (ii) Intervention forms; (iii) Intervention time; and (iv) Sources of support. Conclusions The findings of this review suggest that a combination of differing interventions, especially for early family, including the content of parenting training or education, attitude building and resource provision, which can implement online is recommend. More interventional studies and quantitative evidence syntheses are still needed. Impact Adequate social support is essential to promote the psychological wellbeing of caregivers of children with chronic diseases. In the early stage of children's diseases, integrating different content and forms of interventions for caregivers' families and actively helping caregivers to identify available support resources can improve social support. The findings from this review can be used to guide caregivers of children with chronic diseases and provide evidence for healthcare professionals and social workers to carry out relevant interventions.

Learning contextual factors, student engagement, and problem-solving skills: A Chinese perspective

Abstract:Although problem-solving skills are considered as key higher order cognitive skills, in the Chinese learning context there are gaps in the literature regarding more comprehensive examinations of which factors are likely to promote university students' creative problem-solving skills. We explored the relationships of the learning contextual factors of higher order learning and effective teaching practices with student rule-oriented, procedural, and intellectual engagement, and the students' problem-solving skills. Participants were 21,584 junior undergraduate students at 10 Chinese universities. Findings indicate that (a) effective teaching practices were the most important determinants in formulating students' problem-solving skills, (b) higher order learning was the strongest predictor of student engagement, and (c) student engagement components mediated the relationship between learning contextual factors and the development of problem-solving skills. The results of an importance–performance map analysis revealed that teachers' constructive feedback to students was a specific weakness in current Chinese teaching practices. Therefore, teachers need to provide students with more timely and facilitative feedback on their academic performance.
Behavior Management Training for Parents of Children with Preschool ADHD Based on Parent-Child Interactions: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled, Follow-Up Study

Abstract:Objective. There is a need to develop optimized, evidence-based parent training programs tailored for preschoolers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The objective of this study was to explore a behavioral management training program aimed at the parents of preschool children with ADHD, which directly analyzes parent-child interaction from the perspective of system theory, and the intervention effect on ADHD in preschool children. Methods. A multicenter randomized controlled study was conducted using system-based group therapy with 62 parents of preschool children with ADHD aged four to six years. ADHD symptoms, behavioral and emotional problems, and social functioning were compared with 61 control children whose parents did not receive training by applying the ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and Questionnaire-Children with Difficulties (QCD) at the time of subject entry and at two and six months of entry, respectively. Results. The results of the ADHD-RS assessment showed that children in the intervention group had significantly lower factor scores for attention deficit, hyperactivity, and impulsivity than the children in the control group after parental training and at follow-up (P<0.05). Total scores on the SDQ scale, as well as character problems, hyperactivity, and peer interaction scores, significantly decreased with statistically significant differences (all P<0.05), and emotional symptoms and prosocial behavior did not notable decline (P>0.05). Compared with the control group, the total scores of the QCD scale and the scores of each factor in the intervention group remained significantly higher at the follow-up (P<0.05). Conclusion. After continuous intervention for eight weeks, parents were able to help the children with preschool ADHD to improve their ADHD symptoms and emotional behavioral and social functioning significantly, and the efficacy was maintained at the four-month follow-up; the systemic-based parent training in behavior management (PTBM) is applicable to the treatment of preschool ADHD and is worth promoting.

Abstract:A mobile device-based resilience training programme has been found to improve psychological well-being in parents of children with cancer. However, the essential elements underlying the programme's efficacy and the factors that affect parents' advocacy of the online resilience training remain unknown. This study explored the lived experience of engaging in a mobile device-based resilience training programme in parents of children with cancer.

Psychosocial interventions to improve social functioning of children and adolescents with chronic physical conditions: A systematic review

Abstract:A systematic review of studies evaluating the effect of psychosocial interventions on social functioning in youth (aged 8–18 years) with chronic physical health conditions was conducted. Following the PRISMA guidelines, 13 studies met inclusion criteria. Format and content of interventions and outcome measures varied significantly across studies, precluding meta-analysis. Despite small effect sizes, the findings provide promising support for decreased loneliness and peer problems following intervention, as well as improvements in prosocial behaviors and social acceptance. Many interventions focused largely on communicating about the health condition and were not designed to address a broad range of social difficulties. Targeted interventions to address the unique social challenges of this population may result in improved social functioning.

Abstract:Few studies have examined the relationships among parents' resilience, parenting stress, and social support. This study surveyed 486 parents of children with disability in China to understand the role of social support between parenting stress and parents' resilience. The results indicated that the resilience of Chinese parents of children with disabilities was at a high level. Additionally, parenting stress, social support and resilience were significantly associated, and the mediating effect of social support between parenting stress and parents' resilience were proved by mediation analyses. The findings suggested that reducing parental stress and improving social support may predict (or be associated with) improved parent resilience. The authors discussed the implications for the improvement the resilience of Chinese parents of children with disabilities.

Cognitive and problem solving training in children with cancer: a pilot project

Abstract:Background: Neurocognitive sequelae are among the most debilitating late effects experienced by survivors of childhood cancer, with far reaching consequences for educational, social, and adaptive development. Empirically validated interventions to address such disease and treatment related psychosocial morbidities are needed. Procedure: We conducted a pilot study to evaluate participants' acceptance and impact of a 15-session, clinic-based training program to teach compensatory learning and problem-solving skills in survivors with cognitive deficits. The intervention program consisted of 5 core components designed to improve daily problem solving, attention and memory, and academic performance. Results: A sample of 12 survivors completed the program. Virtually all objective performance scores showed gains from preintervention to postintervention in the expected positive direction, although only 2 of the gains were statistically significant. Parent responses indicated they perceived the skills taught to be useful, to have improved the child's problem-solving ability and learning skills, to have provided concrete and practical interventions for the home, and to have increased parental knowledge. Similarly, the children rated the overall program high, and reported satisfaction with learning more about their relative cognitive strengths and weaknesses and practical problem solving for academic difficulties. Conclusions: Although the majority of enrolled families completed at least 70% of the training sessions, the overall low participation rate from eligible families raise concern about widespread acceptance of such programs in the oncology clinic. The limitations of the study design and recommendations for future research are discussed.
