Abstract:Modeling complex architectures is quite challenging. We introduce a novel intelligent system, which can generate semi-style or semi-structure Chinese ancient architectures automatically. By using an ontology based approach to analyze the styles of different architectures, geometry primitives (e.g. point, line, triangle, etc.) are converted into semantic architecture components (e.g. window, gate, roof, etc.) as knowledge. The following modeling process can be performed at different semantic levels, and it is appealing to users having domain knowledge. This intelligent architecture modeling system has been successfully applied in the digital heritage project for ancient architectures in southeast China.

Abstract:The smart architect is an innovative intelligent modeling system that can automatically generate architectures in the ancient Chinese architectural style using an ontology-based approach. Our approach aims to implement an architecture modeling system that can identify different elements and styles in a variety of buildings. It should also be able to generate numerous architectures of similar structures or styles based on the semantic knowledge extracted from existing buildings.

Abstract:In Digital Library, information is often stored in unstructured and semi-structured textual form. Domain modeling techniques are used for specific domain knowledge services in order to make use of the massive amounts of textual information. Ontology is an efficient way to build specific domain model for abstraction of concepts and relations. In this , we propose an ontology-based domain modeling framework, CADAL-ODM, to structure domain model. CADAL-ODM is designed to provide multi-level and multi-granularity knowledge services in order to meet the various requirements of users in digital library instead of basic reading service. We explain our work by which knowledge is extracted automatically from the unstructured and semi-structured documents. Specific domain model is structured by specific domain ontology description and extracted knowledge. We evaluate the framework with real data sets, specifically, the medical records of TCM documents set from CADAL.

Abstract:Against the background that the top-level semantic framework of Chinese traditional culture is not comprehensive and unified, this study aims to preserve and disseminate cultural heritage information about Chinese traditional culture through the development of a domain ontology which is constructed from ancient books. A combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches was used to construct the ontology for Chinese traditional culture (CTCO). An investigation of historians’ needs, and LDA topic clustering model were conducted, understanding the specific needs of historians, collecting the topic, concepts and relationships. CIDOC CRM was reused to construct the basic framework of CTCO. Ontology structure and function were adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of CTCO. Evaluation results show that the ontology meets all the quality criteria of OntoMetrics, and the experts agreed on content representation (average score = 4.30). CTCO contributes to the organization of traditional Chinese culture and the construction of related databases. The study also forms a common path and puts forward proposals for the construction of domain ontology, which has great social relevance.

Abstract:AbstractAncient Chinese classics embody and transmit the intellectual heritage of China across generations. These texts, rich in enduring ideas, narratives, and insights, have been passed down through a lengthy historical process. While digital modeling of cultural heritage has advanced, research that integrates both the unique characteristics of these classics and their transmission processes remains limited. This study introduces ClaOnto, an ontology specifically designed for ancient Chinese classics. It captures the various versions of these texts and their interrelations, contents, related individuals, locations, periods, and languages. It also emphasizes the processes and evaluations involved in their transmission. This contributes to a more nuanced understanding and increased awareness of preserving ancient classics. ClaOnto comprises three modules: Basic Information, Transmission Information, and Evaluation Information. Its development involved adapting and enhancing existing mature ontologies, as well as designing new concepts and relationships to articulate the knowledge and intangible values transmitted through these classics across generations. Additionally, by employing methods such as data mining, text analysis, and data visualization, this study outlines a workflow for implementing this ontology-based knowledge graph, demonstrated using the Tao Te Ching as a case study. The methodological enhancement enriches the analysis of how the intangible value in classics manifests through transmission.

Abstract:From the perspective of knowledge organization,the authors make a deep study on the knowledge organization structure based on document compiling in ancient China and argues that there is correspondence with the structure of document organization.Knowledge organization structure in ancient China can be divided into three levels,such as knowledge organization based on natural and social institutions,knowledge organization based on document unit and knowledge organization based on knowledge unit.Accordingly,it conducts an in-depth inquiry on knowledge organization methods,achievements of every level and the relationship between them.The study may help to reveal the relationship between ancient library science and modern library science.
Digitizing On Chinese Ancient Books: Information Extraction And Retrieval

Abstract:This paper describes the digitizing of ancient Chinese books, which is almost still a blank in intelligent information processing field. The digitizing processes are composed of three parts of works. First one is pre-processing, to extracting information from ancient books kept on papers. Second is retrieval, to search and get the information from full text and metadata. In the full text retrieval, Vector Space Model (VSM) is used and improved. Fussy and accurate matching algorithms are combined to improve the system performance. The last one is reorganizing, to show the information to the user with a friendly human-computer interaction interface, keeping the very original style. All the works are based on the statistical analyses on over 35,000,000 words of Chinese Ancient books. The system is designed and realized in the network.

Abstract:A new way of organizing knowledge to assure the best use of Digital Library is presented. Terms serve as the basic elements for constructing the multi-dimensional knowledge network using both ontological and generic concept relations, within which entity hierarchy acts as the skeleton of the ontology with various modules added to take care of the properties and activities of the entities. It is flexible and adaptable, and the multiple pathways thus made available for searching contribute to its efficiency.

Abstract:Organizing unstructured information from books into a well-defined structure is a significant challenge in digital libraries. Most digital libraries can provide only search services at the granularity of books and few libraries allow books to be accessed at the granularity of chapters, as manually constructing directory information for books is time-consuming. Extracting structured data from scanned books thus remains an urgent and important work. In this paper, we propose a novel structured data organization framework called CMSOF to organize scanned data automatically, and apply it to a Chinese medicine digital library. In the framework, image blocks and text blocks on the scanned page of books are separated based on the gray histogram projection method or a hybrid method of region growth and the Ada-Boosting classifier at first, and then the text structure is obtained from text blocks by text size and font type recognition. Finally, image blocks and structured OCRed text are correlated at the semantic level. By integrating the structured data into a Chinese medicine information system (CMIS), we can organize the Chinese medicine books well and users can access the books with flexibility, which indicates that CMSOF is an efficient framework to organize books mixed with images and text.

Abstract:Writing scientific discourses and publishing academic results are integral parts of a researcher's daily professional life. Although tremendous magic have been brought by advancement of digital library technologies and social networking services, there are still no off-the-shelf utilities for strategic writing, reading and even publishing. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based platform for scientific writing and publishing featured with its semiautomatic metadata generation and semantic-linked composition, aiming to facilitate the efficient creation, dissemination and reuse of scientific knowledge.

Abstract:Abstract. Since the boom of biomedical big data studies, various big data processing technologies have been developed rapidly. As an important form of knowledge representation, ontology has become an important means for the utilization and integration of biomedical big data. The emergence of new technologies for ontology development has resulted in the generation of many biomedical ontologies by many ontology development communities. The Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology Foundry, an academic organization for bio-ontology developers, has provided a set of principles to guide community-based open ontology construction. The Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology Foundry have also built many widely used ontologies, such as Gene Ontology, Human Phenotype Ontology, and Chemical Entities of Biological Interest. Other various ontology repositories have also been created and used to support ontology reuse. Many efficient tools for ontology applications, such as data annotation and terms mapping, have also been developed. High quality ontologies are also being used to develop new methods and tools for biomedical data analysis. The applications of Gene Ontology and Human Phenotype Ontology for data analysis and integration in recent years are reviewed here. To promote the development and applications of biomedical ontologies in China, a research community, OntoChina, was founded recently. OntoChina aims to support the development of reference ontologies, especially bilingual and Chinese translated ontologies. OntoChina also encourages ontology developers to follow the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology Foundry principles.

Abstract:Big data refers to a collection of data that cannot be captured, managed, and processed with conventional software tools within a certain time frame. It is a massive, high-volume, high-volume data that requires new processing models to have stronger decision-making power, insight and discovery, process optimization capabilities, growth rate, and diversified information assets. This article aims to study the integration and optimization of ancient literature information resources of big data technology, that is, to integrate and optimize ancient literature information resources through big data technology and make the literature more systematic and complete, allowing readers to find and browse literature more conveniently. This paper focuses on the literary works and the related collation, annotation, and textual research results and divides the scope of each subtopic according to the genre. The biggest difference between the information platform built in this paper and the existing ancient books database is that it has the functions of semantic analysis, subject retrieval, data generation, and so on. After text learning, the computer can automatically classify related vocabulary. Based on the effective integration of big data and cultural resources, the experimental results of this article show that, so far, through technical optimization and resource integration, the number of ancient literature reincorporated has exceeded 12,000 copies, and more than 10,000 publications have been restored. Therefore, big data technology is essential for the integration and optimization of cultural resources.

Abstract:Abstract: Ancient books form part of the strong cultural heritage of China and are significant examples of unique Chinese traditional culture. With advances in information technology, digitization has become an important method to address the contradiction of preservation versus utilization of ancient books. By looking back at the strategic planning for ancient book digitization at the National Library of China, the fundamental status of ancient books collected there is established and the necessity of constructing digital resources of ancient books and of openly sharing these resources is demonstrated. Practical achievements of the National Library of China's ancient book digitization include self-construction at the library, collection outside of the library, and international cooperation. Problems and challenges in digital resource construction and sharing include establishing unified standards of ancient book digitization systems, establishing a unified release platform, raising the ratio of ancient books digitization, and enhancing the level of knowledge service. A survey of overseas Chinese ancient books and digital cooperation countermeasures and suggestions is included. To enhance access to the wisdom of ancient Chinese books, this paper proposes a National Library service transformation.

Abstract:As parts of global information infrastructure, digital libraries will likely be accessed by people all over world. Ontologies and their association can alleviate the heterogeneity and particularly the diversity of languages. This paper proposes a solution to cross-lingual information retrieval problem via ontology alignment. We elaborate two original techniques, i.e. primitives’ association based on CL-LSI and mapping configuration optimization, to augment existing ontology mapping technology. As a result, multilingual collections can be bridged by this mapping, and searching across them can be achieved by three tractable steps: querying against local ontology, routing to target ontologies, and harvesting contents there online.

Abstract:A large number of uninterpreted ancient documents exist in Asia, which record a large amount of information about the politics, economy, and culture. Since the beginning of oracle bone inscription, characters have been developing and evolving, and the forms of ancient documents have also been changing. As a large amount of information is preserved in ancient documents, the interpretation and collation of ancient documents are of great importance. However, due to the age, many ancient documents are moth-eaten, stained, damaged, and other problems. And most ancient documents are written in a style that is no longer in use, leaving few experts able to interpret them. This paper from oracle bone inscription, ancient hand-written character, rubbings three diferent types of ancient documents, introduces the recognition technology of assisted ancient documents re-organization including image processing, deep learning, and data analysis and deep learning combined method.

Abstract:How to preserve and make use of ancient Chinese characters is not only a mission to contemporary scientists but is also a technical challenge. This paper proposes a feasible solution to enable character collection, management, and access on the Internet. Its advantage lies in a unified representation for encoded and uncoded characters that provide a visual convenient and efficient retrieval method that does not require new users to have any prior knowledge about ancient Chinese characters. We also design a system suitable for describing the relationships between ancient Chinese characters and contemporary ones. As the implementation result, a website is established for public access to ancient Chinese characters.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to reorganize the relevant information of Chinese ancient architectures with the use of Semantic Web technologies and thus facilitate its deep discovery and usage. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes an ontology model for Chinese ancient architectures based on architectural narratives theory. To verify the availability of the ancient architecture ontology, we designed and implemented three experiments, including semantic retrieval based on SPARQL query, semantic reasoning with the use of Jena reasoner and visual analysis based on the Chinese Online Digital Humanities Resources Platform. Findings The proposed ontology provided a solution for the semantic annotation of the unstructured information of Chinese ancient architectures. On this basis, deep knowledge services such as semantic retrieval, semantic reasoning and visual analysis can be provided. Practical implications The proposed semantic model of ancient architectures can effectively improve the organization and access quality of the semantic content of Chinese ancient architectures. Originality/value This paper focuses on the semantic modelling for the unstructured information of Chinese ancient architectures to semantically describe the related entities (e.g. persons, events, places and times) and uncover their relationships, and thus it made contribution to the deep semantic annotations on ancient architectures.
