Abstract:The study of how science is discussed and how scholarly actors interact on social media has increasingly become popular in the field of scientometrics in recent years. While most prior studies focused on research outputs discussed on global platforms, such as Twitter or Facebook, the presence of scholarly journals on local platforms was seldom studied, especially in the Chinese social media context. To fill this gap, this study investigates the uptake of WeChat (a Chinese social network app) by the Chinese scholarly journals indexed by the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI). The results show that 65.3% of CSSCI-indexed journals have created WeChat public accounts and posted over 193 thousand WeChat posts in total. At the journal level, bibliometric indicators (e.g., citations, downloads, and journal impact factors) and WeChat indicators (e.g., clicks, likes, replies, and recommendations) are weakly correlated with each other, reinforcing the idea of fundamentally differentiated dimensions of indicators between bibliometrics and social media metrics. Results also show that journals with WeChat public accounts slightly outperform those without WeChat public accounts in terms of citation impact, suggesting that the WeChat presence of scientific journals is mostly positively associated with their citation impact.

Abstract:Journal of Information Science, Ahead of Print. Objective/Significance: To measure the international communication capacity of China's English academic journal papers based on social media platforms.Method/Process: Social network analysis, content analysis and emotion analysis were used to describe the diffusion structure of China's English academic journal papers on Twitter from the aspects of network structure and identify important node users, explore the identity characteristics and emotion characteristics of users as well as diffusion capability of journals of different disciplines.Conclusion/Discovery: Journal articles in the fields of natural sciences and engineering as well as humanities and social sciences exhibit a strong positive correlation between their diffusion structure and network size. Networks with a mixed diffusion structure typically have larger network sizes. The users occupying key positions in the diffusion network typically have profile information that is academically relevant. The retweets and comments are mainly statements without emotional inclination, and the comments are mainly summary descriptions of the papers. The distribution of diffusion width, diffusion strength and diffusion speed of each discipline is significantly different. There is a significant positive correlation between the diffusion structure of papers and their diffusion capabilities.Innovation/Value: To reveal the diffusion structure and characteristics of China's English academic journal papers on social media platforms, so as to provide reference for expanding the visibility of China's English academic journals and improving the international dissemination capacity of China's English journals.

Abstract:The paper studied the features and efficiency of information dissemination of micro-blog and WeChat plat-forms of universities.Starting with information services of micro-blog and WeChat platforms of 985 Universities, the paper constructed the efficiency index system of social network information dissemination based on three dimensions including time, content and behavior.Then, the paper compared and analyzed the similarities and differences of dissemination fea-tures and efficiency between the two platforms.Besides, the article further divided the subjects into thirteen categories such as school information, campus activity, ideological propaganda, entertainment, leisure and interactive communication. Meanwhile, the paper explored and analyzed the relation between the subjects and information dissemination effects.The research result showed that there were differences in the time distribution of delivery between the two platforms.In terms of dissemination features,the number of articles and followers of micro -blog were higher than WeChat, but the dissemination efficiency of WeChat was better than micro-blog.In addition, subjects in these two platforms were complementary, there were significant differences in the information dissemination effect between different subjects.

With the popularization of Wechat as a popular platform among college students, the independence of college life and learning is linked with the extensiveness of social platform. The rapid development of network information platform makes the ideological and political work in colleges and universities unable to effectively understand and apply the emerging media platform correctly. Inadequate grasp and understanding of the status of college students has resulted in certain negative functions of ideological and political education in colleges and universities. Facing the challenges that WeChat brings to the ideological and political education of young college students, it is an urgent task for ideological and political education under the vision of the new network media to put forward reasonable countermeasures.

Abstract:This paper aims at investigating the role of perceived integration in WeChat usages from a social capital perspective. Drawing on social capital theory, the author(s) proposed a research model of college students’ WeChat usages for seeking information and sharing comments in youth league campus (YLC) activities. The research model was empirically tested by using data collected from 518 college students who used the WeChat for YLC activities in China. The results of structural equation modeling analysis indicate that perceived integration positively affects 3 dimensions of social capital. Perceived similarity and social interaction ties positively affect seeking information and sharing comments.

Abstract:WeChat official accounts attract huge traffic and have an extremely high marketing value. However, as the number of accounts on the platform increases, a new concern for the account operators is garnering more traffic than competitors. Here, we employed the heuristic-systematic model to classify the influencing factors affecting information dissemination through WeChat official accounts and provided reference suggestions for the operators. We used data from nine official accounts of Beijing Sootoo Network Company as the research object and employed negative binomial regression. Our empirical results revealed that for entertainment and emotion official accounts, article titles that fit the account theme improved content spread, while they negatively affected traffic on news official accounts. We observed that the first article was advantageous when harnessed properly and that the number of images and amount of text was also crucial. Owing to time and manpower constraints, we only selected nine WeChat official accounts in this study.

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 outbreak has tremendously impacted the world. The number of confirmed cases has continued to increase, causing damage to society and the economy worldwide. The public pays close attention to information on the pandemic and learns about the disease through various media outlets. The dissemination of comprehensive and accurate COVID-19 information that the public needs helps to educate people so they can take preventive measures. Objective This study aimed to examine the dissemination of COVID-19 information by analyzing the information released by the official WeChat account of the People’s Daily during the pandemic. The most-read COVID-19 information in China was summarized, and the factors that influence information dissemination were studied to understand the characteristics that affect its dissemination. Moreover, this was conducted in order to identify how to effectively disseminate COVID-19 information and to provide suggestions on how to manage public opinion and information governance during a pandemic. Methods This was a retrospective study based on a WeChat official account. We collected all COVID-19–related information, starting with the first report about COVID-19 from the People’s Daily and ending with the last piece of information about lifting the first-level emergency response in 34 Chinese provinces. A descriptive analysis was then conducted on this information, as well as on Qingbo Big Data’s dissemination index. Multiple linear regression was utilized to study the factors that affected information dissemination based on various characteristics and the dissemination index. Results From January 19 to May 2, 2020, the People’s Daily released 1984 pieces of information; 1621 were related to COVID-19, which mainly included headline news items, items with emotional content, and issues related to the pandemic’s development. By analyzing the dissemination index, seven information dissemination peaks were discerned. Among the three dimensions of COVID-19 information—media salience, content, and format—eight factors affected the spread of COVID-19 information. Conclusions Different types of pandemic-related information have varying dissemination power. To effectively disseminate information and prevent the spread of COVID-19, we should identify the factors that affect this dissemination. We should then disseminate the types of information the public is most concerned about, use information to educate people to improve their health literacy, and improve public opinion and information governance.

On Diffusion-restricted Social Network: A Measurement Study of WeChat Moments

Abstract:WeChat is a mobile messaging application that has 549 million active users as of Q1 2015, and "WeChat Moments" (WM) serves its social-networking function that allows users to post/share links of web pages. WM differs from the other social networks as it imposes many restrictions on the information diffusion process to mitigate the information overload. In this paper, we conduct a measurement study on information diffusion in the WM network by crawling and analyzing the spreading statistics of more than 160,000 pages that involve approximately 40 million users. Specifically, we identify the relationship of the number of posted pages and the number of views, the diffusion path length, the similarity and distribution of users' locations as well as their connections with the GDP of the users' province. For each individual WM page, we measure its temporal characteristics (e.g., the life time, the popularity within a time period); for each individual user, we evaluate how many of, or how likely, one's friends will view his posted pages. Our results will help the business to decide when and how to release the marketing pages over WM for better publicity.

Abstract:Operators make profits by publishing information. If they can know the influencing factors in the process of information dissemination, they can provide new insights for practical operations and formulate corresponding operation strategies for different types of accounts. The purpose of this article is to discuss the information dissemination process of WeChat public accounts and what factors will affect the reading rate and sharing rate of the article. In this paper, the "feedback-sympathize-identify participant-share" (FSIPS) two-stage model is used to analyze the characteristics of information dissemination, and the negative binomial regression model is used to analyze which factors have a significant impact on the two stages of the dissemination model. Our data is obtained from a company that specializes in operating WeChat Official Accounts, and the data is authentic and more valuable. We collectively consider the roles of users, message content, interactions between content and individuals, and the context of social media in information dissemination behaviors (i.e., reading and sharing). In this process, some new variables, such as environment-related variables, are involved and incorporated into the two stages of information dissemination for analysis. The results show that the like rate, which is one of the feedback dimensions, has the greatest impact on the reading rate, while the favorite rate has the greatest impact on the sharing rate. Article type also plays a crucial role in the dissemination of information. In addition, the content relevance between the title and the content also largely affects the share rates of the three types.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate whether diffusion through social media can help to improve the international visibility of Chinese papers and thus increase their citation impact. After analysing 160,233 Chinese papers published in 2012, as well as the number of tweets and citations received, the results indicate that tweeted Chinese papers published in the same year and journal received around 15% more citations than Chinese papers not mentioned on Twitter. The citation advantage of tweeted Chinese papers is also found within various disciplines and by the different citing countries.

Comparing Community-based Information Adoption and Diffusion Across Different Microblogging Sites

Abstract:The proliferation of social media is bringing about significant changes in how people make sense of their world and adopt new information. However, social, cultural and political divisions continue to separate users and information into different social media systems. Twitter and Facebook, for example, are strictly forbidden in mainland China. As a result, 21.97% of all world-wide Internet users are thus excluded from participating in these platforms. In this study, we investigate whether the dynamics of information diffusion, modeled as the adoption patterns of topical hashtags, differ between the communities of the mentioned social media sites as a result of this separation. Specifically, we compare Weibo and Twitter, the two largest micro-blogging sites serving respectively the Chinese population and the rest of the world, by exploring the similarities and differences of how their respective users adopt new information. By leveraging sophisticated community detection algorithms and heterogeneous graph mining methods, we investigate and compare how the different characteristics of these communities influence information diffusion and adoption. Experimental results show that while community-specific information influences topic diffusion and adoption in both environments, novel features, extracted from heterogeneous graph based communities, have a greater effect on Weibo information adoption than Twitter. We also find that users sharing hashtags is an important factor in information diffusion on both Twitter and Weibo, whereas user mentions are important for Weibo, but less so for Twitter. Overall, we conclude that Weibo and Twitter differ sharply in how their users adopt information in response to similar factors.

Abstract:Understanding social media users' engagement is one of the most crucial steps in a successful deployment of an influencer marketing campaign. On mainstream social media platforms, opinion leaders are the major channels to spread opinions and media content to a large population of consumers. Therefore, analyzing how users respond to the blogs of opinion leaders lies at the core of understanding user engagement in social media. In this article, to study the factors that have great impacts on user engagement, we first collect a cross-platform opinion leaders' blogs dataset, which includes 344 643 blogs published by 93 opinion leaders who have accounts on both Weibo and WeChat, the two most popular social media platforms in China. Based on this dataset, we conduct both characteristics study and semantic study to investigate the impact factors of user engagement with respect to blogs of opinion leaders. To find out the associations between user engagement and practically accessible attributes of opinion leaders and their blogs, we adopt state-of-the-art (SOTA) sentiment analysis models to process the blog data, develop a normalization technique to alleviate the issue caused by the heterogeneity of fall-out intervals of blogs, and devise a saliency method to compute the integrated gradients of sentences in blogs. Utilizing these computational tools, we reveal that user engagement on the two platforms agrees on some common factors, such as the number of tokens of blogs. Meanwhile, the two platforms differ in some aspects. For example, the semantic patterns that can improve the level of user engagement on the two platforms are very different. Our analysis can provide advertisers with valuable insights on how to plan an influencer marketing campaign on the two platforms.

Abstract:WeChat is the largest social instant messaging platform in China, with 1.1 billion monthly active users. "Top Stories" is a novel friend-enhanced recommendation engine in WeChat, in which users can read articles based on preferences of both their own and their friends. Specifically, when a user reads an article by opening it, the "click" behavior is private. Moreover, if the user clicks the "wow" button, (only) her/his direct connections will be aware of this action/preference. Based on the unique WeChat data, we aim to understand user preferences and "wow" diffusion in Top Stories at different levels. We have made some interesting discoveries. For instance, the "wow" probability of one user is negatively correlated with the number of connected components that are formed by her/his active friends, but the click probability is the opposite. We further study to what extent users' "wow" and click behavior can be predicted from their social connections. To address this problem, we present a hierarchical graph representation learning based model DiffuseGNN, which is capable of capturing the structure-based social observations discovered above. Our experiments show that the proposed method can significantly improve the prediction performance compared with alternative methods.

Abstract:There has been a tremendous rise in the growth of online social networks all over the world in recent times such as Twitter, Facebook and Sina Weibo. Although how to measure influence in online social networks has been widely studied, the difference of influence on different topics has not been studied. In this paper, we collect the content of the influential on Sina Weibo. And then exploring into the behavior patterns from the data, such as the power-law and small-world effect, most of the influentials publish content with web links and tent to publish content at 10:15 am and 22:00 pm. At last, we compare the topic wideness, topic influence of the influentials. And we find out that people tend to publish more content on certain topics but sometime usual topics receive more attention and influence.

Abstract:Social media platforms have had an enormous impact on the dissemination of scientific work and have fared well in covering scientific papers. However, little is known about the general dissemination process from academia to social media and how various factors affect the dissemination of scientific papers at different stages. In this paper, we proposed a two-staged dissemination process to profile the diffusion of scientific papers from academia to social media. A two-step simultaneous equation modeling–artificial neural network approach was adopted to predict the retweet scale of scientific papers on Twitter by combining source-related and content-related factors. The analysis in the field of oncology suggests that the artificial neural network algorithm (ANN) with the input units generated from the simultaneous equation model (3SLS) can predict the retweet scale of scientific papers on Twitter with an accuracy of 78.05%. According to the normalized importance obtained from the ANN, we found that most factors related to the information source play critical roles in promoting the dissemination of scientific papers. The number of first-generation tweets has the most remarkable impact on subsequent dissemination. As for the content-related predictors, tweets attached with more URLs can provide richer information for audiences, thereby increasing the retweet scale of scientific papers. Besides, the influence of research topics on dissemination varies with different audiences. The findings of this study contribute to the literature on the dissemination of scientific papers beyond academia and provide practical implications for scholarly communication.

Abstract:The paper discusses the using patterns of Chinese SNS (social networking sites) including the most popular sites Sina Weibo, Renren, Kaixin, and Jiepang. In china, the domestic SNS dominates the market the same as the long domination of instant messaging tool, Tencent QQ, over Windows Live Messenger. These four SNS platforms encompass almost every aspect of Chinese social life. It is beneficial to investigate the multidimensional using patterns from the strong ties to weak ties with the distinctions of relationship management and tool using difference. A set of methods are designed to study the virtual publishings of SNS users and the real contexts that happened. By observing online the actions of the individuals, and then verifying the true contexts face to face, a series of patterns of SNS using are found. In the end, the authors also point out some design opportunities on mobile SNS.

Abstract:In the contemporary digital landscape, Weibo has emerged as a dominant force, profoundly shaping societal dynamics and communication paradigms. This study investigates the intricate interplay between user characteristics and topic influence on Weibo, addressing a critical gap in existing research. Leveraging cutting-edge techniques such as user group segmentation, Dynamic Topic Modeling (DTM), and Jensen-Shannon divergence, our research delves into the evolving landscape of Weibo users. The study begins by highlighting the staggering growth of Weibo, with 462 million monthly active users and 130 million daily text exchanges, emphasizing the need for updated insights since 2018. Traditional research in this domain has focused on personalized recommendations, sentiment analysis, and user behavior, often relying on keyword extraction. However, this study challenges conventional approaches by thoroughly analyzing attribute features, interaction dynamics, and content, classifying Weibo users into distinct groups based on nuanced characteristics. A novel taxonomy for interest extraction is introduced, considering the temporal dimension and assessing the impact of various topics on Weibo coverage and user activity. This comprehensive approach not only enhances our understanding of Weibo users but also provides a framework for future research in digital communication platforms. Theoretical implications are profound, as this study reveals the existence of specific user typologies with evolving thematic preferences, challenging the traditional notion of categorizing users as a single group. Managerial insights benefit social media administrators, content creators, and marketers equally significantly. By identifying user groups and their changing interests, administrators can enhance user experiences, while content creators and marketers can tailor their strategies for more effective communication.
