Abstract:Organic dyes are organic coloring substances that are among the most widely used chemicals in the textile, paint, cosmetic, leather, and paper industries. Their exposure to the environment causes environmental and water pollution. Therefore, a large number of techniques and catalysts have been developed and investigated for dye degradation. In this work, graphene oxide/iron (GO/Fe) and reduced graphene oxide/iron (rGO/Fe) nanocomposites have been synthesized and used as photocatalysts for the degradation of methyl red dye. Here, the rGO/Fe nanocomposite was made by a simple and green in-situ method, in which tea leaf extract was used as a reducing agent. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images were recorded for the surface morphology analysis. Moreover, UV–vis spectroscopy was used to study the kinetics of dye degradation. The rGO/Fe nanocomposite exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency (99.5%) compared to the GO/Fe nanocomposite (70%) under visible light for methyl red (MR) degradation.Graphical abstract
