Abstract:Low-temperature water electrolysis is a promising means to employ renewable electricity and decarbonize H 2 production, a molecule of great global importance with exciting prospects ahead. A number of R&D challenges remain in order to scale this technology for global impact. This paper will focus on several aspects design and development of low-temperature water electrolyzers: (1) low- or zero-precious metal catalysts for H 2 and O 2 evolution, and their integration into devices, (2) in-situ/operando synchrotron-based methods applied to catalysts, gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) to provide new insights into functioning systems, and (3) new device designs based on bipolar membranes (BPMs) and their resiliency with respect to impure water feedstocks. The overarching theme is the design of catalyst and interfaces informed by fundamental studies and their application toward functioning devices.
